This is one of those "narrow and deep" videos you mentioned in your Q&A. I will probably never own two drivers. But I definitely see myself finding draw and fade settings during a fitting that I can switch to depending on the course I'm playing.
Love it! Put 2 drivers in the bag this year when I realized I never used my 3 wood. Epic Flash only misses left, Sim Max only misses right. Worked great!
People have called me crazy for carrying 2 drivers on certain golf courses, but being able to have the confidence on the tee to hit the ball in either direction has played to my advantage time and time again. It's all about strategy!
I'm also lefty all the curved holes at my home course require a fade but my miss is a big hook and it screws me over on par 5s all the time. Def getting fitted in the next year or two into something that actually suits me. Looking forward to working on my driver swing during the winter here when ranges finally open after lockdown, my tee shots hurt my scores so much.
I don't use a driver at all. I do have 2 3 woods in my bag. One for off the tee, slightly deeper face and a shallow one for the fairway. The off the tee on I play with a natural fade and can draw my fairway 3 wood. Great video again lads.
Dang it gents! I thought this was just a goofy idea. But 15 minutes of video ha convinced me this might just be evil genius. Love it! And yes, I have a hole at my home course where I’d have to draw a driver to take advantage and that’s not my usual shape. So I hit the top of the hill and have 200 in, but if I could draw one 15 yards it hits downhill and would run down probably 70 yards. A massive advantage
Great video. This really got me thinking. I see some real value in this approach as a single digit handicap holder. As you said, this is not something for everyone however, your video has opened the little grey cells to possibilities. This spring could see some real change in this direction. Great job guys, really love your show.
Now that's a Cool concept! So I thought that I would have a rummage in my "naughty Club store" to see how many drivers I have and in total have 5! So I could have one to slice into the trees, one to hook wildly right into the rough, one to hit the old "Sally Gunnell" now called a stinger, one to sky into orbit, leaving me one to hopefully find the occasional fairway! Pure Genius TXG!!!
Even though I don't count myself in that category of people who love hitting driver, I still am able to understand the merit of being further down the fairway. For most people, a driver accomplishes that and I think that this might be something more people try in the coming years. Personally though (and maybe this is my pride talking), I like hitting 3 wood on certain holes. I like what it represents, that you're trying to be more strategic and plot your way around the course. That being said though, if you can hit driver and that's the strategic play for you (on some holes, I would certainly agree it is THE play), then more power to you.
😝 Just started trying this. Older driver, higher spin, cut down to make it a Thriver! Newer Rogue SZ Boomstick, 3* less loft, weight forward, 46”, let the Big Dawg eat!
This is something I would want to look at too for shorter hitters- the mini driver idea where the 12.5 (lofted up to 13-14 degree) 44" driver gives a positional advantage like a 3 wood and then really go with longer 2nd driver with lighter shaft etc to go as long as you can. The 3 wood is harder for slower speed players to hit off the tee than a shorter(44") high lofted driver, not to mention 3 wood is also probably harder to hit off the deck than a 5/7 wood .
I actually won my flight in my club championship 2 years ago using 2 drivers. Mine was for a slightly different reason though. My new driver was about 20 yards longer than my old driver and it brought hazards into play that I never reached before. I was also super confident with my old driver, and not so much with my 3 wood off the tee. I took my 4 iron out of the bag as I never use it at my home course. The strategy paid off and I was able to win using 2 drivers.
Callaway rogue due tomorrow to join the mavrick max I've been using the last 3 months.Rogue will be set up for my normal fade as I can hit draw so easy with the mavrick max.We have 2 courses at Ramside gc one tree lined one wide open links style I will be seeking the help of the pros launch monitor ASAP.Bang on lads top stuff. 👍👍
I play sim and also play a cut. I still have my M3. I'm totally going to build it to draw and go play with two drivers this weekend! I rarely hit 3 wood as I typically skip it and go to the comfort of my 5 wood when I absolutely must hit a draw
I like the sound of this potential new series! Fitting clubs to the course and giving the player the ability to get the most out of every swing. Testing in the sim in the off season and taking it to the actual course in golf season, can’t wait.
Great video guys!! Super interesting insight in what you might do. It's probably not something I could go for because my 3 wood goes a specific distance that I need at the courses I Play most often. Maybe you could combine the testing with a comeback of the TXG World tour? I think that would be great!! Thanks guys
👍👍 I play a strong 3 wood for this reason as mainly a 2nd driver for draws, not for distance gapping. I play a cut on my driver, and have entertained a 2nd driver that I can turn over more easily, but have been happy with the strong 3 wood hitting low bullets. It's rarely used off the fairway, maybe if I duff a drive, but it has better potential if needed than driver off the deck. Smaller headed drivers like Taylormade Original One or going older like Titleist 983K would be a great options too for me. Remember, Adam Scott bagged 2 putters for a bit! Good to think out of the box boys!
Do you guys have any other ideas for other less conventional bag setups? I find myself almost never hitting 3w these days, typically going with driver or 3i off the tee. I will be looking to get a driving iron this winter but wondering if I should replace the 3w as well? Thought about a driving iron and hybrid combo (one for a lower, driving ball flight and the other for the high ball flight as well as versatility out of the rough). be interested to hear your thoughts on this option? Thanks!
Hey Matty, love your choice of home course! I was on the greens staff there back in the '90s, during my college days. It's home to my only hole in 1 and still my favorite course to this day. Would love to see you do some videos from there, perhaps in the spring. Keep up the great work guys.
Absolutely love this type of thinking. I was debating dropping 3 wood for a while last year with the TM Original One mini driver. Thought was to carry an 11.5 mini driver for a fairway finder and a normal driver for holes where distance is more of an advantage. I rarely hit 3 wood in a round, never hit it off the tee, and when I do (often on a par 5) I don’t hit it well because I’m neutral or slightly up on it and end up in more trouble than just laying up to wedge distance. I actually ended up dropping 3 wood though to carry both a driving iron and a hybrid for the preference of a driving iron off the tee and a hybrid off the ground with more versatility in various lies.
Awesome video. Really neat idea. My local 18-hole course has a lot of doglegs right and left, and only a couple straight long holes. So you could really take advantage of this type of dual driver setup.
It makes sense. Consider to keep old driver and then purchase a new one to curve the opposite way. Question is 1) does the club below the drivers give enough for par 5’s 2) how do you manage a driving hole where there’s a hazard you need to hit short of (like a stream)? Lay back with 5 wood now?
Im thinking of doing something similar but with hybrid/2 iron. Hybrid is easy to turn over or hit high and a UT for the straight/fade or low trajectories
The idea is making its way for sure in my head. Need the right club fitter to help you in that direction though (Ian is the man) ! A friend of mine was in Dubai last week on the European Tour and it's getting more common. Apparently, for these guys, it's a 48" bomber + a 45" safe one. For me, that would be one draw/one fade...
This really touches on something that I sent Ian a DM about on Twitter and a video idea I'd like to see explored. I personally struggle to see the use of a 3 wood and so given my natural shape is to fade the ball, if I could have a driver that helped me shape it right to left with my usual swing, that would be awesome. When I try and hit a draw, I tend to hit a high block, so it's definitely a high risk shot.
Makes total sense. I I thought about doing the same because I cannot even draw my driver I can only fade it . And I really don’t carry a 3 wood because I maybe use it once in a round if that. I will definitely look into that.
what im thinking now is when i go to get fitted this spring.. im gonna get my new driver setup for my favored shot, and see if i can get the fitter to help me set up my old driver for the other shot... may be worth a shot
I have been doing this for over 5 years. I seldom used my 3-wood off the deck and was never really comfortable with it off the tee so I took it out of the bag. I always had my full 45 inch 10 degree driver for hitting it longer. And, I have a club I called a "Thriver" which is a Driver head (with extra weight) at 12 degrees with a 43.5 inch shaft. That thing finds fairways all day long, but it is a good 15-20 yards shorter than my driver. I am not a long hitter like you guys at 57, but I can hit my Driver about 240-245 and my Thriver about 220-225 but insanely straight. On my course, I hit Driver on 6-7 holes and Thriver on 5-6 holes. Best decision I ever made.
Hi guys, I don’t carry 2 drivers but I carry 2x3woods! I have de lofted my F9 Cobra to 13.5 draw biased loft, & a Titileist 917 x 15 deg. I have taken out my 4 iron, replacing this with a 917 x 21 deg. 7 wood. I play a links course in Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺 & have found this works quite well!
Great vid, I think I’m going to give this a shot. From what I gather, the idea be to set one club upright, draw biased and the other flat/open, toe weighted, and use the same swing? I’ve got 2 9-degree standard Rogues, an Aldila Synergy 60 stiff and a Project X Evenflow 65 stiff. With either shaft, I tend to over-compensate when I try and shape shots... snap hooks and big slap slices (way too many Tiger videos!). If I can dial in 1 swing and rely on the tech to shape the shot, it’d be killer. Thanks for the never-ending instruction and advise!
Haven't used a 3 wood for 18mths, gives me options elsewhere, which change regularly according to conditions. Used shotscope this year the club usage function tells me that if I had 2 drivers and used them 50/50 each of them would be used approx. twice as much as my next most used club (lob wedge) - if that makes sense. Most holes have a no go side so you've got me thinking.....👍
I upgraded to a Cobra F9 from a F7 driver late this year. I have spare shafts to plug into the F7. One is a steel one that makes the F7 a 43" driver. It works well but is a bit shorter in distance than the F9 but is straighter. I'm going to experiment in the late season now to see if 2 drivers works for me. Thanks for the video.
I have really worked hard on learning to hit a fade with the driver as a very draw-biased player. It's been helpful. I don't think you really need to do too much club engineering. Just open up your stance and put the ball forward and it'll most likely fade. I can't hit a big slice (yet), but i can get it to cut back even though that's not a shot shape I have been playing with for years.
Im actually putting 2 drivers in play this week for a tournament. Ping G430 LST for my bomber & Titleist TSR4 for accuracy. I'm taking my 9 iron out of the bag to get down to 14 Clubs
I carried two titleist drivers this year, a 917 in 9.5 with a stiff shaft and a ts2 in 11.5 with a regular shaft. Both demo clubs. I live on the Alaska highway so I use the ts2 when it’s cold and you just need to get it up high and the 917 if it’s warmer or I need to cut through the wind.
For a while now I've been looking to fill the second slot in my bag, tried driving irons, hybrids, fairway woods, but none of them worked, I think it's just a mental thing tbh, small headed club on a tee box rattles me, then I've came up with 2nd driver idea, same concept one draw with higher loft, one lower loft with a fade bias and low spin. Seems like a golden idea. Hopefully it pans out
I have been giving real thought to carrying two 5-woods, because I struggle to get a 3-wood elevated. With today’s adjustability I have my 5-wood plus one-degree, having another one minus one-degree could make it the functional 3-wood I am missing
Given how expensive drivers are and how unlikely it is that 99% of us simply cant afford two drivers, and given how adjustable drivers are now could you guys do a follow up video to this showing how effective it would be having one driver but setting it up differently for different courses.
Oddly have been thinking through this recently after acquiring a few affordable used driver heads to do testing with. I don't use the 3-wood much from the deck, and thought why not have two different driver set-ups, perhaps even with different shaft profiles, with 5-wood and hybrid for longer fairway shots.
Seen it twice, it provokes an idea, i will Look into this more, the courses that I play would be easier with one swing but a driver for draw and another driver for fading
I like the idea of having drivers optimized for both shots. My fade is my “let it go” shot, but if my driver is set up to maximize the fade, I imagine that the draw would spin too little off that club. This seems like a good way to get the most out of both shots.
Very interesting. I have stopped using my 3 wood, i only used it off the deck, and it was erratic at best. Recently i bought an offset driver which i can draw almost at will. Ive taken my other driver just incase i overdo it, but it never occurred to me to use it for the drives i need to fade. Maybe i should give this a go this week. Im not a big driver by the way.
Love videos like this. Would you play both drivers at the same length or make the fade driver slightly shorter to promote a little more of that kind of ball flight?
Be good if the higher lofted drivers weren't draw biased. Experimented with a 12 degree driver in a 3 wood shaft for a safe spinny drive but hard to get them to fade!
I was actually thinking bout this the other day. I have my driver set up to keep me safe from to much either. But I have a few wholes that I could really use some more distance and or shape to. I hardly ever use my three wood
Fascinating concept from the Professor. So a draw and fade version or a max bomber and fairway finder? So Ian, does this mean I’m getting a double driver fit?
i am currently doing this 2 driver test using a ping lst 410 and a mavrik max with arccos but for general testing on which is best for me in terms of shots gained, however i may change the set up and see if this will work as i struggle with draw bias holes so its a great idea to try seperate set ups. I use a 3 wood 1 time if that a round as i am a 5 wood man so i have space
When I hit my driver well, I hit it really well. Unfortunately the same could be said about hitting my driver poor. Just purchased a mini driver though and plan on carrying my TS2 and original one mini.
I’ve carried two drivers now for the last 3 years, but,,,, for a different reason, not for draw or fade. One is a full length 10.5 degree for when there is room to “go for it”. The other is a 14.5 degree 43 inch fairway finder. Has saved me countless shots
I've carried two drivers for most of the year. It started out because I was trying to pick one to be the gamer - between a Mavrik SubZero and the M6 Draw version, both at 9. The M6 has ended up being the fairway finder (according to my experience and Arccos data). I hit longer drives (which at my speed means 255-265 😉) with the SubZero, but also it's a bit wilder, as you might imagine. But the other thing that's happened in actual play conditions is that some days I'm just hitting one better than the other and I hit that one more. When I'm swinging well, I can use both. Well...not both at the same time. I'm pretty sure that's illegal.
I was there at Pebble Beach on that Sunday for Gary’s win. Father’s Day Sunday just my daughter and I. I’ll never forget it. Memories forever. And $1,300 lighter on the wallet at the merchandise shop. Lol. 😂🤣. But worth every penny.
Thanks some much for the Info . I have a problem with my Epic but with this Video you just made me think of buying a Drive that I can set up to my Swing to Draw it back to the Fairway! Thanks Ian & Iron Mattie . Happy Thanksgiving. Greg of Ohio
Think I might go this route. I never hit my Mavrik SZ 3 wood. With 110-13 mph club speed with my 3 wood, it's just too long and hot to play it. Might turn my G410 Plus 45 inch into my fairway finder/Fade bias, while the G425 LST with my VA Nemesys shaft at 46 as my bomber
This should work well. I've gone down a slightly different path.I dropped my 3w this year for a TM Mini driver. it's worked out well so far. I use it where my driver is too much, and off the deck as a 2 wood. I don't have a reliable fade with my driver, it's straight, to left, to way left, so obviously dog legs right are a problem for me. With the mini I can hit straight, to draw, and not go through the dog leg. So far it's also given me enough extra length to reach most par 5s, providing me with 6 eagle chances. I only made one of those, but that's beside the point.
Two drivers is always an option. What about not building a swing to change the shape, but building a grip pressure differentiation? For an example I'm a right handed golfer and if I want to turn the ball over hard from right to left I'll apply more pressure (force) in my right hand in the ring and middle finger. Just a thought.
I think probably for most players that can't hit the ball any where near that far, let alone that accurately, might be worth looking into being comfortable with hitting opposing shot shapes with their driver vs their 3 wood they already have. Even just having the confidence to know you're going to try and hit fades with driver and draws with 3 wood would, I think, settle peoples minds and help with nerves on the tee shot, giving people a better chance of committing to a swing - before going out to spend £450 on a 2nd driver anyway :D
Very interesting configuration to consider. That said, I love hitting my 3-wood off the tee...you have to play to your strengths. Moreover, a fairway wood, such as a 3-wood really offers the player more usage of the club on any given day of the week. Trying to hit a driver off the deck, should you not hit the right shot off the tee....ooh boy; now that what I call drama.
What do you think of having for someone like me with a lot of speed, one bomber driver and then one very forgiving, higher spinning driver? And then can still make them biased. For me I'd make the forgiving one a draw type
I have been thinking of this, but my approach has been a Mini Driver at 11.5 degree with a draw setup, and a TSi3 with a slight fade bias. Both should be within 10 yards of one another given shape. Thoughts?
I could easily do this as I've dropped an iron by spacing out my lofts such that my 5 iron is a 4 iron 24-degree loft - and I carry a 16 degree Mizuno #2 hybrid that I play open at 15 degrees with a shorter shaft that already is my 230 fairway finder so my strong 3wood is mostly unused. I do think Pros doing this is going to come down to them not wanting to give up a long iron for long Par 3s but if you open your mind and slightly space out your irons by dropping one, it is 100% possible and Strokes Gained will likely mean it is correct to do.
Nice video guys! Could you please do the same topic about 3 woods aka gary woodland style? Might be easier to do for many people who don‘t want to „loose“ one club by using 2 drivers
I imagine it wouldn't be great off the fairway. I think you'd be better off going with a really strong 3w, unless you don't care about hitting it off the ground. Just a guess though.
Just curious what mat you guys use to hit off of? I know this is a driver video but I know super hard and worn vs super soft mats can provide different spin/launch characteristics which makes me think it's something you would be particular about
You have the perfect dynamic. It never seems like y’all try to talk over each other. Always complimentary speech. Enjoy all y’alls content
Cool concept. For me right now though, I think I'd be happy just to have 1 driver that I knew which direction it was going to go... 😂🤦
This is one of those "narrow and deep" videos you mentioned in your Q&A. I will probably never own two drivers. But I definitely see myself finding draw and fade settings during a fitting that I can switch to depending on the course I'm playing.
Makes a ton of sense, especially if you remove the 3 wood and have a hybrid that you can get decent distance out of.
I have driver I hit 260 yards straight and 0ne driver I hit 300!
300 not so straight
Love this! I only play 12 clubs as it is so this works perfect. Thanks for giving me permission to buy a 2nd driver 😜
In the spring you two need to do on the course video with two drivers each, please. Full 18 holes.
You only hit the Driver on 14 holes Max. 18 is unnecessary.
@@lawrencebogar6136 I think it's safe to say that some (most) people enjoy the content enough to watch the par 3's as well...
Love it!
Put 2 drivers in the bag this year when I realized I never used my 3 wood. Epic Flash only misses left, Sim Max only misses right. Worked great!
"320 in the air is a different conversation." I want in on that conversation. Absolutely fascinating stuff fellas!

ORRRR take any adjustable 3w, dial down the loft and have a club which has a penetrating flight and rolls out. Also consider a 2H or iron.

Hey guys ! I usually carry my TS2 driver for distance, a 13.5° 3 wood for precision and a 5 wood for a lower range.
Similar set up. Driver, TM Mini 12*, 4 wood...Seems to work well. I have a couple of 3 woods, but they usually stay in the basement.

what im thinking now is when i go to get fitted this spring.. im gonna get my new driver setup for my favored shot, and see if i can get the fitter to help me set up my old driver for the other shot... may be worth a shot
@@tylerfj24 My driver is already set up for the other shot, a snap hook into the pond.
I voted no on your Instagram poll, this video has changed my mind, very interesting stuff
Driver - 4 wood 7 wood easy - fairways are shallow - however I think a deep face strong 3 wood ONLY for tees
I used to use the TaylorMade SLDR mini-driver as my 3-wood replacement to achieve this effect ... might have to revisit, now with Original One?
For a while now I've been looking to fill the second slot in my bag, tried driving irons, hybrids, fairway woods, but none of them worked, I think it's just a mental thing tbh, small headed club on a tee box rattles me, then I've came up with 2nd driver idea, same concept one draw with higher loft, one lower loft with a fade bias and low spin.
Seems like a golden idea. Hopefully it pans out
I love this. It seems like it would very likely be more valuable than the 3 wood.
Cool vid guys as per! would like to see more vids like this, course management ideas.
Very interesting 🤔. I do have a spot for one more club.
I like the idea of having drivers optimized for both shots. My fade is my “let it go” shot, but if my driver is set up to maximize the fade, I imagine that the draw would spin too little off that club. This seems like a good way to get the most out of both shots.
Mickelson did this waayyyy back when Callaway first released draw and fade biased drivers. Going back to FT5 (maybe even FT3?)
I have a driver that I usually fade and then a Callaway 1,5 set in the draw setting. No traditional 3 wood, next club is a 5 wood.
I hate a 3 wood off the tee feel like I’m leaving myself harder shot. Think I might look into this.
Great stuff!!!! I need to look into this! I never hit my three wood. Why carry it? Another driver would be perfect.
I really enjoyed this video. I would be that guy with 2 drivers in the bag. Love shaping shots. Great video 👍
When I hit my driver well, I hit it really well. Unfortunately the same could be said about hitting my driver poor. Just purchased a mini driver though and plan on carrying my TS2 and original one mini.
I have 2 drivers that I do use but not in same round, I have them because my early season swing is not what my late season swing is.
Great idea and something I would definitely do the only issue is cost with drivers these days costing £500 who can afford to buy 2 at a time
Thanks some much for the Info .
I would love to see you guys test the cobra big tour as a second driver/3 wood option
What about teeing the ball at a slight angle? Noticed from unlevel tee boxes, the tee angle and ball angle dictates the ball flight dramatically.
For a driver, if all things equal, what has more influence on shot shape. The lie angle or the weight track?
One Donnay Slammer is enough for me thanks. 👍🏻
I think that's why their is a rise in the strong 3 wood aka the 2 wood, driver for bombing 2 wood for the long tight shots
Love watching these "experiments"!
Great concept. Can you please review the Ping g425 range?
Great content as always. I am NOT one of your Un-Magnificent 7 who always gives you a thumbs down. lol
Nice video guys! Could you please do the same topic about 3 woods aka gary woodland style? Might be easier to do for many people who don‘t want to „loose“ one club by using 2 drivers
Great video!
Great video boys!
How about a video on a 12° driver set up to be used as a fairway wood. An idea I personally have been kicking around.
I imagine it wouldn't be great off the fairway. I think you'd be better off going with a really strong 3w, unless you don't care about hitting it off the ground. Just a guess though.
Just curious what mat you guys use to hit off of? I know this is a driver video but I know super hard and worn vs super soft mats can provide different spin/launch characteristics which makes me think it's something you would be particular about
Question....Is it legal to change your driver's draw/fade settings while playing in a tournament?
