    3:34 I can shed some light on the differences between ideas and Cuusoo (think like Jaques Cousteau for pronunciation): Cuusoo is a crowd sourcing website run by the company Chaordix. They partnered with LEGO, but at some point LEGO decided to branch off to make Ideas as it's own site. Ironic because recently Lego announced there Forma crowdsourcing through Indiegogo.

    Wow, a video where I actually had/have a large part of the sets! The big Discovery still hangs out in a box (though it is lacking the arm and satellite, took those out for play reasons :D); my tiny Shuttle from the ISS (which looks nothing like the structure in orbit today!) actually appeared on a show on children's TV here in Germany.... That unfortunatly left it covered in sticky glue, and absolutly ugly :(
    I also had the moon and mars sets... Only missing the large lunar lander and the large mars rover from that line. Additionally, I also have an ancient rocket with a launch pad, that might have been my very first set ever.
    Getting sets in the style of the discovery line - and smaller than the Saturn V - is one of the few things I can imagine buying more LEGO for, now that I don't play with it anymore (scratching the itch with Minecraft instead :D). Would love to have a 20cm Hubble Space Telescope display piece, for example!

  • @HubPie3

    I remember seeing a Discovery set in some old instruction booklets, but I never got one myself. That's because I didn't watch the Discovery channel as a kid.
    I wish space exploration was more sought after these days. I know it still matters, just not nearly as much as it did back in the 60's.

    • @Nathan-lw8oq
      @Nathan-lw8oq 6 років тому

      I agree, but space exploration at the time was so relevant because putting something into orbit was a demonstration of power for the USSR and the United States. Once you know how to send a man into space, you Can send a nuke anywhere in the world.
      There are still space programs around, NASA is still doing that stuff, the only difference is that people don't talk about It very often now since there is not Much interest in the thing.

      @Tesla-Effect It Will take time. I still hate that some people think space is just a "waste of time". I agree that some problems like climate change need more attention right now, but it is still sad to see such a beautiful idea as a Mars human colony treated as something useless and pricey

    Personally, I'd love to see another space theme. Maybe one in a near-future setting where we befriend some aliens and help them fight rogue factions within their own race like Life On Mars. The human sets would be based on the kind of things we have today, but slightly more advanced, whereas the aliens would have all kinds of things like FTL travel, spacefighters, and other things like that.

    Something I liked about the rovers that they build over the years is how they always integrated Technic and Systems into these sets, it always made me want to find ways to make MOCs out of both sides.
    Something I think Bionicle could've tried if Lego wasn't too sure if their G2 sets had a future. I'm sure some people would've let Bionicle slide if they were a nice blend of Technic and Systems, (plus it wouldn't make old fans of Bionicle leave it if it were to come back as system only). So far we haven't seen as many Lego sets that intergrate these 2 building styles as of now. :/

    • @jarkspore
      @jarkspore 6 років тому +3

      IronClaw3000 System and Technic get along better than it’s apparent. Technic is used with System frequently enough, but always as a supporting structure or mechanism, not something you’re supposed to see(unless it’s a red or yellow lever). Sometimes it feels like System is just the art of hiding Technic, and Technic just something to be hidden by System, but I guess that was what they were always designed for.
      And CCBS is just mech biceps now.

    • @ironclaw3000user
      @ironclaw3000user 6 років тому

      @@jarkspore
      yeah true,
      but most technic parts tend to be those square system's parts were they have pin holes on all 4 sides.
      Guess I want to see future sets that use more technic as part of the look of the set, kinda like how G2 second wave attempted to do with their 6 Toa😅

    For whatever reason, the Discovery sets cost much more in the UK than in the US (sometimes even twice as much). However, I did visit the US a couple of times while they were on shelves here, and I really wish I'd bought more than just the small ISS set- the Apollo astronaut minifigs in particular are incredibly expensive now. Ah well.

    The Mars Exploration and ISS sets were my third and fourth Lego sets ever. I remember them fondly and have been meaning to rebuild them. I like how by the time I found this video Lego has remade both the lunar module and ISS and I have both of them.

  • @RAFMnBgaming
    @RAFMnBgaming 5 років тому +1

    Crazy seeing the the old ISS config with the P6 truss sticking out the top as the whole solar array. Kinda reminds me of project gateway...
    Actually that gives me an idea: Modular Lego ISS. Each module is a self contained set, so a pressurized module might have bunch of minifigs in jumpsuits inside doing something, or you might have the solars turn on a knob for the truss sections, canadarm with a couple of dudes in space suits floating around, etc. But on top of that everything has docking ports, so if you get a bunch of them you can build the whole ISS, or the ISS part of the way through its life, or your own damn thing because it's cool.
    Fun, Educational, there's a very strong incentive for people to buy multiple sets it probably looks like it'd be profitable to the folks in charge, probably never gonna happen though.

      @Tesla-Effect Yes, but China has been very slow, and cooperation with them is not likely in the near future. As for Russia, they're doing decently at the moment, but their future plans are constantly delayed and rather underwhelming. Great respect to the scientists and engineers of both programs though, they've really done a great job. Also, India is beginning work on their own manned spaceflight program, which I'm quite interested to see!

    I think one of those older space shuttle sets with the launching tower was the first actual set I owned... back when I was, like, five, or somewhere around that. Could be forgetting something from earlier, though.
    Before that we had a bin full of lego parts in the basement that my brother and I would play and build things with, but those were hand-me-downs, and there was no way on Earth to tell what they had come from :) I think our sister occasionally joined in too.

    i still have this huge discovery space shuttle (7470) with its hubble space telescope in the cargo section
    its such a beauty with all its flaps and retractable landing gear
    when i banished all my LEGO from my shelves back in the day (ive since put back some of my favs but back then i wanted my room to look less childish) the space shuttle was the last to go because i liked it that much
    shame its white colour has turned yellowish now and the worst: all of the stickers have become brittle and are peeling off the bricks
    its so sad actually
    and still: lego puts more and more stickers on their sets :'(
    the mini ISS i had as well, i got it for christmas back then and loved it as a display piece! you couldnt really play with it but you could fly around with the mini scale space shuttle and that was fun
    always wanted that technic rover but it was too expensive unfortunately

    The only NASA or Discovery set I own is the mission to Mars One. I remember getting it as a gift for either birthday or Christmas, and many of the pieces I still find around in my collection to this day. Granted some of the stickers maybe faded or overlapping parts, but it was cool for a time of a miniature model. I also have a NASA astronaut minifigure but the sticker is a little bit worn. I think there is a place for licensed space themes that aren't Star Wars or occasionally superheroes, but all that time in between Lego has offered a lot of unique space factions and storylines. With the latest iterations of realistic space being in the form of ideas sets, I'm glad that it's still around to some degree. And in some cases, expanded upon

    I think that LEGO should make a theme in which each set is a section of a space station.

    5:03 1969 pieces, idk if that's a reference or just a coincidence

    Uh, I got a City poly bag that was a rover with an astronaut(he had an Atlantis helmet hahaha). That Saturn V is badass though. I’d like to see a space shuttle like that, but maybe they couldn’t get away with nano-fig scale with something that has such an obvious cockpit.

    I think you forgot the most important part of this, that a LEGO minifig actually went to space, and it happened before the first Danish person went to space.

    Ah, I had the big rover and the moonlanding set. At the time, I found them really weird as they had a very serious tone to them compared to most LEGO themes I was used to, and came with no minifigs. I have the sails of the rover to this day, still trying to figure out what to do with them. The rocket that came with the moonlanding set is now the back of an 94's LEGO style oil truck I build, so at least those large white tall round bricks found a place to exist...

      Mickey the Maniac Maybe a cape?

    • @Mick0Mania
      @Mick0Mania 6 років тому

      It would take a person more creative than me to implement them as a cape. They are massive and have jagged edges! I considered using them to represent bodies of water to make a "ninjago city"-esque build but never really had time to take on a project of that scale. I might use them as stylish awnings, that are shaped to resemble sails or something. Thank you for the suggestion! Love this series. Keep up the good work!

    I really wish Lego made set about Soviet shuttle Buran, it would be so nice to have that displayed with Energija rocket and Nasa's shuttle. I have the Nasa shuttle from which I made MOC of Buran

    Awesome video and love the deep reflection at the end. I'm hoping that they at some point do a "real" mission to mars small line, using real concepts or slightly modifying them. I think it would be awesome and maybe put a small drip of passion for real space exploration into people. The issues is always as a company making money. :( they have super heroes "space" star wars "space" soon to be IMO lego movie/friends "space" and Ninjago kinda dips into "space" with the look of its scfi ships. this all kinda puts the real stuff on the back burner i think unfortunately. :/ But thanks for the video i didn't know that there where ever that many actual space sets.
