All Hail to Lena The Bloody Regina, The Bloody Queen! Ernst and Lena are both GOAT but Ernst is especially more because he is trying to change things for better and peace. But if humanity cannot change, Ernst stated, humanity should be extinct. Ernst has a lot of great quotes like this one: "A Society refusing or neglecting to save its children because there’s no benefit to doing so, is that which ultimately benefits no one. In addition, if humanity can’t survive except by killing children because they’re different strange or difficult; clearly humanity would be better off extinct!" Ernst is a damn great character!
& now we finally get to Ernst, my favorite character in 86 so far. He's such a multi-faceted person its so great. Also shoutout to Grethe "Spider Woman" Wenzel my 2nd favorite character.
The dream sequence with his brother is symbolic of what was further explored in the novel, namely that his brother survived that fight, largely regaining his sanity and escaping control of the legion due to the damage he sustained. He then proceeded to drag his broken mech after them and saved them, bringing them to the Giad territory and allowing himself to be destroyed in the process. Shin was fading in and out of consciousness and isn't sure if that was a dream or really happened.
goddamn this is a huge thing to be left out. it would have been amazing to see it animated as well. because as it is it seems like a cheap way to fool the audience instead of a touching last farewell of shins brother

We see it as Ernst leaves Shin's monitoring room, and walks the corridor with his cabinet staff. It was defeated days earlier, still within Republic territory, but the conversation suggests they were retrieved together. The model's presence in the dream and the words "I can't take you any further," give enough hints as to by whom they've all been saved. 86 is superb at "show, don't tell".
Wow never picked up on Lena’s dyed hair being a symbol of her support for the 86, but it makes sense. Alba are really proud of their silver hair and some alba dyeing their hair (like the mechanic dude last episode) is a big point (in the novels as well).
Other people have pointed out that with that and her new black uniform she has all 5 colors of the San Magnolia flag, which could be taken a symbol of her trying to the Republic's ideals that others have given up on.
The cat. Teppy is short for Thermopylae, a reference to the 300 Spartans. Lena wanted to go with Leonidas but thought it would only honor Shin and not the entire group.
A no small detail is that the legion uses these mechanical butterflies to interfere with all types of long-distance communication and also cancels the air force, therefore everyone is cut off from the other countries that still exist.
To be honest, when I watched this the first time I was dissapointed they all survived. Not only it felt kinda cheap but I was excited for the story to take this unexpected turn, I thought it would be cool to just kill off the main cast and then we follow Lena with her new squad turning things around for the better in honor of our fallen friends. But what we got instead was really cool too, so I don't mind the decision much. It would be really surprising and cool if it did happen though.

The way I understand it from other comments (havent read the LN's) is that Shin's brother survived their encounter, came back to his senses, and managed to transfer his consciousness into a new legion body, then rescue them and bring them to Giad before ultimately being destroyed.

After so long held in reserve, the artillery that San Magnolia was banking on is breaking down. From shells to even the mechanisms of the turrets and howitzers themselves. Even if the San Magnolian high command presumptions were true, this would undermine their entire long term strategy for final victory. But Lena knows the truth, and is doing everything she can to buy time. And she is no longer alone in the walls. As for the Spearhead Handler? Well with no Undertaker to break the minds of handlers, it will be someone following the General's plan of culling the best of the 86 pilots 20 at a time, and they won't be eating buckshot after hearing ghosts. So probably the same handler since Lena's demotion. Some insufferable career officer with zero regard for the lives being thrown away.
I'm happy the 86 survived and seem to be in a better place they mostly likely ever been in. But I can't help the apprehensive feeling I'm getting from this situation, I hope I'm wrong.

Also, this is the point where I can say the Legion isn't Rampant. It is still following the orders of the old Empire of Giad to the letter. To conquer the continent for the Empire. But since the Federacy of Giad isn't the Empire of Giad, the people the Legion once ignored became classified as enemies. So now all human life on the continent is a target. Regardless of race or flag. Every. Last. One. Not sure how you gals though the San Magnolians were able to subvert control over the Legion.
I hope they're not. It's a nonsense show about vindicating insecure egos as the expense of the team. You know, the opposite of one of the core tenants of sports, TEAMWORK. Also the fashy overtones of their soccer sensei.
Hard disagree, second cour is pretty good. It IS more about Shin than Lena though. The later novels have some ups and downs but are pretty consistent generally, the slow parts get huge payoffs.
