It's always better to design crucial life-saving equipment to be as complicated as possible. Always.

Keep finding these older Buick videos Rivlanta! The newer ones just suck, must have bored the staff to leave the room! Lacrosse launch and GM Accessories for example, how many times does a technition need to hear available tire sizes and rims? And what happened to Chuck Mckellen? LOL!

What happens if the door comes open on the automatic systems? I like them my 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme had them but what if the door pops open?

From what I read in the past, someone could lose protection in such an accident, or even worse, be ejected from the vehicle.

Well I guess drive more carefully and don't believe in all these "safety" features.

You get thrown out and possibly die. I would advise anyone looking for a Buick of this era to find ones with manual 3-point belts and the SIR system. SIR is Supplemental Inflatable Restraint, a driver airbag.

@@carexpertandy I didnt know they were automatic on my 1990 oldsmobile 88 (my first car) until This year. LOL. Never would have considered using it the way it was intended. "Walk" into the belt....

Almost nobody kept door mounted seat belts buckled in at all times. Looks like suck a nuisance to work around when getting in and out of car.

My grandmother had a Pontiac Grand Prix with this with this feature. And it would be annoying open the door if you were still wearing the belt

How are the door mounted seat belts even considered “automatic” seat belts? This has to be the worst example of lazy engineering ever by GM or any other carmaker. Just moving the seat belt from the B pillar to the door doesn’t make them automatic.

The belt "buckles" were intended as an emergency release only, the belts were to be left fastened at all times and you'd shimmy under them and when the door is closed, PRESTO! you are belted. (I had a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird convertible in college 10 years ago that had the door mounted seat belts and that was sort of how it was explained in the owner's manual)
Beginning for the 1990 model year federal regulations required that all new passenger cars have either an automatic seat belt system OR a driver side airbag. Many cars had the automatic belts at first because they were cheaper than airbags which were not yet ready for installation in all makes and models, gave automakers a couple years before a driver side airbag was mandatory across the board for the 1995 model year, and dual airbags by 1997, pickup trucks got an extra year to comply
