The pandemic saved golf. When there was nothing else to do, golf was allowed especially in the states and people got reconnected or pick up the game and realized what they missed and/or that's its a really fun sport. Golf is also addicting especially once you start getting better, so even though its an expensive sport, people are hooked. In MI, the simulators are literally booked up for weeks at a time at pro shops during Jan-March.

Did you mention that the owner of Titleist (Acushnet) were so annoyed with Costco regarding the Kirkland golf ball that they sued them, as it’s that close to a Pro v1 (I think the v2 ball is now v3 as the first version had to be removed from sales).
It’s a Pro v1 copy that’s close enough for most golfers (and close enough to bother a multi-billion dollar company), if they can get over themselves and the brand name.
    Cheers

I live in a part of the United States with a moderate climate, I played today in 70 degrees weather so it's not like local golfers can't get out, but I drove past Drive Shack last night and on a Monday night the parking lot was packed at 8:30pm. Something is going on with golf.

i think a lot of sports are looking to the 'Drive to Survive' series as a major way to create more public interest. My friends and I are dedicated NASCAR fans and are crossing our fingers they follow suit with a similar series that can help spur more acceptance and viewership. People with prior misconceptions are able to see how intricate and interesting the different aspects of a sport are. Golf would hugely benefit from a series of this sort.

Honestly I think you’re wrong about golf being boring. Pebble beach next weekend I’m quite looking forward to and even the Honda classic I’ll watch this weekend probably. It doesn’t have to be be mega exciting EVERY SINGLE SECOND. I can happily put golf on in the background, go on my phone, have a beer and chill. If you’re not interested in golf you’re not, the sport will never die, don’t worry about it.

I think is is amazing how big of a gap there is between Greg Norman’s vision that he regularly communicates vs what the PGA Tour players are saying. Why is there such a big gap.
Greg Norman’s interview in Golf Digest makes a lot of sense, why wouldn’t we want to grow the game internationally and allow more inclusion in areas like Asia and the Middle-East. Norman even calls the “Saudi League” the Asian Tour in his interview. Funding appears (according to Norman) is coming from a lot of companies in the US.
My personal opinion on this, Norman is moving too fast and pushing for an all or nothing approach when he should focus on 3-5 tournaments a year In the US during PGA Tour events that get low ratings and aren’t well attended. Then you might be able to allow for dual / Tri membership across the PGA, European and Asian Tours.
If the money is guaranteed on the Asian Tour and the appearance fees bring the best players on the world, then the rest of the field and money will follow.

About the offshoot leagues and trying to make the fan experience better, Rory made comments that, yes, PGA has to try and do things a little better, but he said that the PGA IS working on things to try and achieve some changes in this regard. Your point about the cut and maybe a favourite player not making it is an interesting point. It would be interesting if they split off those who were cut into a "B" contest so that the fans who came to see them, or want to follow them can still do so over the weekend. Yes, they get cut from the "main" event but they still play the rest of the weekend, maybe for a lesser prize. Of course, on the flip side of this, there's only so much TV coverage to go around, and the networks aren't going to be covering the "B" group, so only those who have gone to the course to see the live action could take advantage of this. Maybe they offer the coverage on the secondary contest on UA-cam for free?

The PGA needs team events or a team league. More best ball, scambles, schambles. When you look at the popularity of the Ryder cup, and how much the players and fans love it, why wouldn't you try to incorporate that into a season. When you can get behind a team and watch guys play not just for themsleves but for the team supporting them, it makes its so much more fun to watch! WE NEED TEAM EVENTS PGA!!!!

People talk about how tough professional golf is but with more of a off season you’d create less opportunity for the lower level golfers coming up and playing in pga tour wrap around season. Why does golf format have to change?? It’s like saying why don’t we play football with 7 players because they’d be more goals and more fan friendly.

Here’s my take on the SGL and as a golf reviewer I’m hoping you can relate, …….say Golf reviewer regularly says less than favourable reviews of a certain OEM . Then that reviewer needs certain data / tech insight only available at OEM factory. Whilst visiting the OEM, golf reviewer is choked to death & bonesawed into pieces. Will I buy from that OEM ? That’s the issue.

Love the show and the channel Rick. I have played Z stars for years because they go on sale for 29.99 Cdn and for me nothing else comes close at that price. I do feel that the ProV is the best ball just not twice as good. TP5 and Chrome are also great but same price as Pro V around here.
I do not get the appeal of a 40 player tournament. You lose all of the great stories that make the PGA tour so good week in and week out. Not sure how you change format for an individual sport. The team event they do play has already caused problems because of the FedEx cup points you can get if your brother happens to be Brooks Koepka.

I bet no regular worker, an odd man in any profession has put in the effort these professional athletes have done.
Nobody, who’d had the same work ethics and who’d been as engaged in the process of getting better and mastering their craftship couldn’t be dropped out and get ”underpayed” in their occupation.
And there is the entertainment industry. Getting screentime on a lofty chanel paying astronomous fees for broadcasting rights, the organizer is well off to pay stupid amounts of money for the clowns bringing the money in.
That said, would you think a multiple winner on PGA Tour would stop playing, if they only got, say 200 k a year. No way. That is big money for a years work.
The players are in cause the competition and will to win a tournament.
Even the players at around 100 ranking get a good 250 a year. That spells livelihood for me. I did my profs carrieer in aviation, put in all I got to get better and hoped to make it to and at the top. Ended short, but got a decent livelyhood and pension. Kind of the same thing. Others were better than myself, but still, I survived and got decent living out of it.

To spice things up on the PGA Tour, the event should come down to a sudden death format for the top four/five players after playing the front nine on Sunday. The back nine is a sudden death elimination event.
The Bryson vs. Cantlay six hole sudden death drama was riveting. Imagine if that happened on a regular basis.

Rick what was your view on the European Super League? IMO if you do a SGL then it has the potential of just the chosen player of Company A being in there. Then potentially Match Fixing. There are things that the PGA can do to increase viewership, but let’s be honest, most golfers would rather play 18 holes than watch 18 holes

re: surge in golf participation I think that’s directly attributable to you and the many other professionals on UA-cam. While the pandemic-related lockdowns opened up opportunities for established or occasional golfers to play and practice more often, those same opportunities have steadily dwindled as work has slowly returned to “normal” and other activities have resumed. But, what you have done is completely obliterate the aura of impossibility around the game. Of course it’s still the same difficult and maddening game it’s always been but your content gives people the impression that it’s possible to achieve a reasonable competency at little or no cost and the embarrassment of in-person instruction and the humiliation of being new in the golf world. More, you’ve provided a window into the game that shows that the vast majority of people who play are not very good, which was not the common impression among the uninitiated. You’ve also given the game a casualness and playfulness that goes well against the common impression of golf and golfers. You’ve also demonstrated that the barriers related to equipment are not well justified with your reviews and, especially, content related to second hand or “old” equipment. The PGA Tour is tossing around millions to players for increasing awareness but, my guess is that should go to you, and other UA-camrs, because there have always been elite Tour performers and it’s always been obvious that what they do can’t be done by regular people and Bryson and Brooks poking at each other is not going to motivate anyone to spend 5 hours of a lovely Saturday and tons of money to be told by a golf course they are bad at something 100+ times. Regular people are discovering and trying and grinding with the game because of what you and others have done. The timing of the pandemic notwithstanding, there are plenty of other things to do outside.

Rick I am having a difficult time understanding the issue with starting a new golf organization. We talk about competition and how it creates a free market. There is nothing pushing the PGA to be fair with the players, to provide the best golf to the fans. You add another organization and now there is competition for TV money, corporate sponsorship money. Currently the PGA does not have to fight for that. How many of us want one petro company to by petroleum for our cars. What about one golf club manufacturing company. Do you believe we would have the outstanding club technology if there was just one company producing golf clubs.
Mickelson is just saying what other golfer are scared to say. If I am way off base, please explain why. Love the channel.

The point being, PGA of America and probably also any national PGA thruout the Globe is a Labour Union, which would do everything in their power to cancel any other prospect for a tour for the absolute best players in the World.

Yet Olympic hockey is very much respected in Canada, the NHL is a circus, which delete the possibility to attend for the unarguably best players nearly every time Olympics is held - during the regular season.
Not even the World Championships get the absolute best roster, cause some of the best are still playing NHL Play-Offs in late spring.
The american attitude of being superior to anybody else deminishes the big picture. Naturally till now everyone of the professional tournament players imagine becoming a PGA Tour America player, cause the purse and ofcourse competition.
Luckily there still is one Major tournament outside USA. If they could decide, The open would defenately be vaiwed off the rotation.

You should do the 6 holes, 6 players, £6,000 match.
Open it up to your viewers as a lottery, to get to play.
It would make a great video, and drive the engagement with your viewers even more.l that you already do.

Netflix could pick about 3-4 players, 2 on Korn Ferry and 2 on PGA tour and follow them and show what they go through and how they train for a full year.

It seems that in the past two years many social media golf "influencer's" have done more and more vlog content in Saudi Arabia. Outside looking in it appears the Saudi's are paying for this sort of exposure. I'm no fan of Phil but I highly doubt he's the only person turning a blind eye to the type of people he does business with.

Is there any other balls that would be close to the level of a ProV1 like the CostCo ball that’s close to a $1 a ball?

Interesting take on the golf balls was comparing prices of some golf balls last year and Bridgestone is same price as Srixon and actually cheaper than Vice.Yet Rick is acting like Vice is really cheap and called Bridgestone expensive when it's vice versa!

Funny how the more seasoned golfers are bound to stay withthe ProV ball.
My ball of choice ise the Seed SD-01 Yellow. Love them ... and loose them quite a lot. Check lost ball counter in my vids. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

Rick, since you love the Kirkland balls this much, are you going to switch from the Pro V1 for your own game?
