Whenever I watch the performances of Elena I get so upset and angry with how bad she was treated and not listened to when complaining to her trainer.
She was an amazing talent and if those around her would have been far more understanding to her requests she would have taken even more Golds for the Soviet Union than she’d already done.
She would also not have had her world taken from her and would very likely still be with us today.

If she had broken her leg again, she would have missed the Olympics but recovered and had a life (marriage/kids) like her teammates. Instead she probably spent 26 more years as a recluse in her apartment. She held on until her grandmother died, and then let go. So tragic.

She was about a year older than me. I’m now 63. It’s so awful what the Soviet system did to her. Such a needless accident. She died so young. God bless her memory.

I don’t think there’s spring floor for artistic gymnastics in the 70s. She was performing on the hard concrete floor.
