- iPhone LiDAR or Laser Scanning?
.
In this video, Eugene Liscio from ai2- 3D makes a comparison between these technologies available in the market and explains the pros & cons of using a laser scanner vs the Iphone LiDAR to create a 3D model.

Thanks for digging into this and laying out the results so clearly 🙌
In my version of Every Point it says Video+Lidar is not yet implemented. You prolly have acecc to Beta?
Thanks for doing these videos. very inspiring and informative.
I have special permission at this time to try a newer version but I believe they just released an update yesterday!
@@3Dforensics Thanks. I did check before writing the comment:) ... Maybe it takes a day or two longer for it to show up in Europe. Cheers
Are you logging in through the portal
Would be good to repeat a couple of more times each method for the Iphone scan and get some feeling on repeatibility/consistency
Yes, for sure! This took enough out of my day as is!
Really appreciate the hard work there. Excellent content. Out of curiosity though, what was the file size after you recorded with the iphone?
I think the best way to answer that might be to head over to my sample data page, www.recon-3d.com/sample-data and download some of the files to give you an idea of file size and point density. I have cropped many of the scans to keep things efficient but they were not much larger than what you can download and test for yourself.
I found this video after searching for "iphone lidar" as part of research of what options I have for hobby use (I make 3D models and maps for games as a hobby).
What would you recommend for this use? Would an iPhone 12 suffice or is it a toy? Are there any sub $5K options for a more solid/professional LiDAR Scanner which would cover my needs without breaking the bank?
What I'm scanning and so far have used photogrammetry for, is building exteriors for reference when 3D modeling.
Vehicles and vehicle parts is also of interest.
I think if you are scanning small objects like cars or even building facades, it may work well for you but it sounds like to me, photogrammetry is a good choice for you regardless. The only other product that I would recommend in that price range is DotProduct which can scan interior spaces pretty well and if just for reference, then you may be fine. There is a lot more here to discuss than I can cram into a simple reply.
@@3Dforensics thanks a lot :) if you want to share more, feel free to contact me in private.
@olahaldor hi,I want to scan my house for hobby too,do you have better choice now😮
Oh awesome just watched merging 2 everypoint scans into one to fill in the gaps. This looks like a great option for bringing in clients to a build site, quickly and using the already available Varjo XR-3, but clients could just use the Varjo VR or The even cheaper model .
I am drawing plan for my house renovation. Was wondering if this new iphone LIDAR capabilities is useful
Yes, you can give it a try but it depends on the level of accuracy you need.
This is so informative, thanks!
Outstanding. Thanks.
Ii think you should create a document with a page fulll oof Dr dots. With a small projector displaying the dots on the van You might have to do this at dusk to get clear dots unless you have projector with a very high. lumen number.
Great video! Thanks for your time and sharing your experience!
Great Info Eugene, thanks for doing this. What computer program would you recommend for editing lidar scans?
CloudCompare! I am holding a course in about 3 weeks if you are interested.
But if I already own a A6000 why pay for a cloud service? Or is the cloud service just that much better using a proprietary algorithm?
I tried the SiteScape App and it wasn’t able to auto-register 8 scans. I’m an architect that uses Revit 3D design software so I also have Autodesk’s Recap which was able to register the scans. However; there were huge errors in data drift from the scans, like 3’. Another creator eliminated most of the errors by using a gimbal stabilizer to improve the scan accuracy; the iPhone’s hardware was optimized for GPS (a blunt instrument) and not capable of precision without a gimbal stabilizer.
Hello, I would like to see the deformation and wear on the single front of any legacy build with the Lidar scanner of the Iphone 12 Pro. Do you think this is possible?
Yes, it is but it depends on the scale of the building and also what level of accuracy you are looking for. You may need to do a combination of Photogrammetry and iPhone Lidar
hello, how much memory does the scan occupy on the iphone? I want to know if 128 gb memory will do.
It depends on the length of scanning but I would say on the order of 100 to 500 Mb for most scans.
Would it be able to scan aircraft aerofoil shape of the wings .
Probably, but it really depends on the accuracy you need,
where is th record mode!!! in version 2.5 nthere is not this option!!!
Sorry, I keep telling people that I have a version with some extra options...in the near future, there should be some good news! Standby!
I just found out Intel dropped support for the L515 Lidar-camera... so no opensource software for 3D-scanning ever?
From what I know, that sensor was only useful on indoor settings and very poor performance even by a window. Not sure about open source solutions I am afraid.
@@3Dforensics oh it was usable in overcast-conditions. Sadly only Dot3D could use it so far. 🙄
Great video! 👏🏼
Круто, спасибо :)
15:00 "This is your phone and you're able to capture data within a few centimetres".... IF you own a scanner or a total station, this is misleading... Don't make believe anybody that without knowledge and proper gear they're gonna get those kind of results straight out of their phone... Initial results were more in the 30cm range...
I have data that shows you can achieve at least 80% of the points well below 2cm. So, it depends on the scale of the object and other factors. These results have been repeated by other users and keep in mind that this is not just lidar, but lidar fusion with photogrammetry which makes a substantial difference over just the lidar data.
@@3Dforensics yes, but that's after scaling the cloud... The fact that it kinda works in this particular example doesn't make it a reliable all around solution when you have no data to compare to...
@@trollenz The Recon-3D app uses targets as a scale for increased accuracy just like you need for photogrammetry. I agree, using just the lidar sensor for scale isn’t as accurate. However, It is important to note that once scaled, the point cloud data is generally recreated accurately and with less noise. I always make comparisons to terrestrial laser scanners as a ground truth and there are always caveats and conditions where it can be worse but the point is, under controlled conditions, subjects like cars and objects of this nature can provide data which is useful.
@@3Dforensics sure... I just realized this video is a year old and you've since developed an app with a different approach. Your app looks nice, congrats.
@@trollenz Thank you. I learned a lot from making these videos and trying other apps. Cheers!
I wasn't aware iphone scans would require registration to get a better-scaled result and improve the accuracy ! I usually use Polycam and fully trust the ipad's lidar. Your video made me reconsider my opinion !
The method of registration I used allows for scaling the iphone lidar data set. This is not usually used but it did show a notable improvement.
Thanks Eugene ... very interesting. Might almost make a diehard Android guy switch to iPhone.
Well, remember there is DotProduct too. They have a great offering and it works perfectly with my Samsung 9
@@3Dforensics What are you referring to with regard to dotproduct? I can see a beta from 2017 "dot3D for Tango" on the play store. Is there something else you are referring to? I'm not an apple guy either but like the idea of 3D scans at a small fraction of the price of the full scanner
What's is it that you are trying to convey here? What point are you trying to make m? Are trying to demonstrate something?
I hate to ask this but if you have to ask, you haven’t watched the video?
