Chris's exasperation at the lack of common sense makes him a favourite in this household.

I think your explanation could benefit from thinking about how financially incentivised these lobbyists are by being paid advisors to government and nonprofit organisations. Especially the case in diversity and inclusion consultants etc like Stonewall.

Absolutely vital work that should be more widely recognized. Thank you for the clarity and reason.

On one point of order, GM crops allow the use of carcinogenic pesticides. Other than that - a great deal of common sense spoken.

No. The nicotine molecule is the primary concern not tobacco or smoke. Nicotine releases norepinephrine, which is fine, but over long periods it causes catastrophic internal injury, especially in regard to the cardiovascular system. It's okay to support the primacy of individual choice and legalisation of tobacco and nicotine products, but let's not pretend that nicotine is some benign, harmless chemical.
    Typical neoliberal doublespeak.

He lost me when he endorses Ozempic and keeping ultra-processed food rather than improving lifestyle, improving food and improving civic facilities. He'd rather keep things as they are and just pump people with drugs and drug companies with money!

I'm not an activist but Christopher Snowdon is wrong. Alcohol and nicotine consumption are bad news for individuals and society as a whole. Smokers have had many, many years to give up. Progressive prohibition is a great idea that will mean old addicts have nothing serious to complain about and new addicts will be few in number. Snowdon has put up a series of bogus and irrelevant arguments to defend smoking and the smoking industry.

@@ianjefferies6573 I have no idea, though I do wonder. It's possible that's he just likes a smoke and a drink and is determined to keep poisoning himself as long as he can.

@@ClydsdaleVI It is a well established fact that alcohol and nicotine are harmful to individuals and to society. It's not my opinion. Restricting their consumption is good for everyone except those who gain their living by providing the drugs commercially. If we were talking about other drugs these people would be termed 'dealers', 'pushers', and so on. I think they have had plenty of time to find a better way to contribute to society.
