I migrated with my family to Australia in the late 1970's and just before the Malvinas/Falkland war.
Had I stayed in Buenos Aires I would have ended in the navy for a two years national service and probably would have not returned home as my closest friend died in the battleship Belgrano as a petty officer and he reallly wanted me to serve with him in his ship.
In Australia I learn to speak english and by the time Javier Milei came into power last year I had lost all hope for my country of birth.
Because I'm bilingual and can listen to the main voices currently talking in favour and against Milei in Argentina (and abroad) and I can tell you that for the first time in many decades I'm not longer embarrassed to tell people where I was born!
I'm amazed and very hopeful of the changes happening in Argentina and totally support Axel's assessment of the current political and economic situation in South America and the world.

    • @colorin81colorado

@vern146 yes, the current Australian government has systematically being erroding Australian future by (simple example) allowing the sale of huge areas of Australian farmland and resources to overseas interests including to Chinese government owned companies.
We used to have 10 oil active destilaries processing our own crude oil but Labor governments have reduced that number to only two (one used for storage only) and have given the task of processing our crude oil to mostly Chinese and Singaporean companies... We sell our crude oil to them and then we buy it back from them at a huge benefit to those foreign conglomerates (just to give you a small example of what has been going on in resent decades).
One of the biggest issues I fear is that there is not a great deal of difference between our political parties and in the end we end up loosing more and more regardless of who is incharge!
Of course it is not as simple as that but mine is just a simple observation.

So, inflation in Argentina now is at 2% per month. Doing the math (1,02^12) that gives an inflation of 26,9% per year for the next year (2025). That seems pretty high, but let's remember that inflation was above 300% annually when he took office. And, inflation is still going down, therefore it will actually be much lower than that. There's zero doubt that by 2026, inflation will be at a single digit, if not between 0.5-2%. By 2026, the Argentinian Peso will be the best currency in the world, even above the Dollar itself, only losing to Bitcoin. Poverty was at 46% when he took office. It when up to 51% during the middle of the year, but now it already dropped to 38%, therefore in just a single year, poverty has already declined. The government is paying all debt on schedule for the first time in decades, the debt is being reduced and there's still fiscal surplus from the budget. I don't call it a "Miracle" simply because I have been a Libertarian for years, thus I always knew that this would be the inevitable outcome. But it is still impressive nevertheless.

It's like jumping from a 100 story building and someone asks you as you hurtle past the 50th floor how it feels: "So far, so good." What is going to happen when the US can't service it's debt except by printing more money? I see a death spiral of the dollar if we don't wake up. It's either inflate our way out, the likely, cowardly way, or repudiate the debt and crash the world economy instantly. The only other path is to stop lying to the public that we can have everything and cut spending to gradually bring down the debt. The US government spent < $5 trillion per year before COVID and now, years after that crisis has been over, refuses to spend less than $7 trillion. It's a travesty. It's not under-taxation: revenues are at record levels. It's spending to buy votes, a bipartisan failing.

The Liberals will - if they get into power - continue destroying the nation. If we look historically, the 1990's run of Chretien and Martin were an anomaly as far as I can tell. Trudeau's destruction of the local economy and slapping up red tape to destroy investment has been the norm - not the exception. Conservatives historically have been the ones to come in and clean that up, and in so doing, result in economic growth.
If you look at the polling: Conservatives are set to end up with 70+% of the seats in the house of commons. And if they get a big enough mandate - if the Canadian Senate attempts to block or slow down the conservative policy, they will have the mandate and political capital to engage in constitutional reform.
To put it simply: The next few years are going to be interesting for Canada/Canadians.

I really wish people would stop comparing him to the extremist right in the United States and England which hides behind christian nationalism. Libertarians believe in true freedom, economic and personal, a far cry from what Christian nationalists want to do in the United States. Again, Milei is a classic economist something we have never seen before, not even in the United States. Let us also be very clear that the “West” is drunk on Keynesian economics. When people talk about ‘austerity,’ I believe that term is not the right one from a libertarian perspective. It was used here in Portugal by social-democratic agendas and the IMF, and while it may have helped, in my view it’s not genuinely about austerity. What’s really happening is a correction of pointless government overspending on ineffective objectives. The genuine option is to reduce tax collection while also ceasing to use that revenue for what I’d call clientelism, electioneering, and populism.
As for investment, it should be carried out by individuals, businesspeople, and entrepreneurs, without any ‘help’ from the state. The best help the state can give is to simply vanish from the picture.
I don’t think there’s anything ‘austere’ about a libertarian approach-nothing rigid, nothing regulated to the nth degree-just a rigorous defence of basic rights: the freedom to live, and the right to private property.
¡Viva la Libertad, Carajo! (Greetings from Lisbon, and following closely.)

I found that Argentinian people did not work very much and did not put any money into the banks
Lets hope Milei can continue for a few more years till it really turn around.
The people will have to be strong and bear the pain for a while

12 hour work weeks and getting paid by food stamps after 8 hours of work doesn’t sound like economic turn around to me.

Great to see Milei do this, he's done exactly what he said he would do - it gives some hope to us from other nations who are sick of the leftists trying to turn western countries from free market economies into communist states.

LOL, he is taking out billions in loans from his buddies at the IMF further indebting that country that can't pay the last round of loans off. That place is a mess and will continue to be one because that people have let themselves become so divided.

Argentina’s Peronism shows how prioritizing short-term welfare and protectionist policies can cripple long-term growth. While intended to support the vulnerable, Peronist policies often led to inflation, economic stagnation, and debt by sidelining market growth and productivity. Progress now demands leaders driven by data, economic expertise, and management skills. The world is starting to see that leftist promises, while well-intentioned, often benefit a select few rather than society as a whole. Socialism’s foundational principles are fading, and we are entering a new era that calls for a hybrid governance model - one that balances economic pragmatism with sustainable social policies.
