On a Krupp or Thyssen page there’s a blurb about the formula being the same but the steel being improved due to gradual improvements in manufacturing (presumably reductions in impurities, more consistent mixing, different smelting temperatures, and cool down cycles affecting precipitation). A steel is much more than a formula, and mills matter. I think that is reflected in the general incremental superiority of Spyderco 8Cr. That or some knife makers are swapping in whatever’s available (which can also work to our advantage in those rare cases where a better steel is swapped in when a cheaper one is out of stock).
Correction. The Krupp website was referring to 4116 on the Cold Steel website they rated 4034 below 4116. 120 cuts with a mirror edge is more than sufficient and a recent JoeX destruction video on the Crawford 1 suggests 4034 is quite tough. I think I would prefer 4116 but the Crawford is designed for one in every door bin.
Great comparison. I've had the Crawford 1 for a while now and it's not let me down. It keeps a decent edge and sharpens pretty easily. It's a decent work horse knife at a very good price point.
YES! MORE BUDGET STEEL TESTING! THis is what im hankering for! i especially want to see some 7cr/440a testing! I think that if heat treated propperly it should be AUS-8 level Not just that! Because of the lower Abrasion resistance the test should be much quicker aswell!
I don't really have much experience with AUS-8, but I have a ton of experience with Gerber's 7cr, and Spyderco's AUS-6 and they're completely indistinguishable (IN MY EXPERIENCE) in every aspect. They sharpen the same, and have the same edge retention and stability. That makes sense, since they're essentially synonymous. I could see Gerber's 7cr performing similarly to some of the random AUS-8, but probably falling behind if the AUS-8 was done really well. The schrade/old timer 7cr I've tested fell well short of Gerber's 7cr, so I can't imagine that being anywhere near AUS-8. I agree though, I love the budget steel testing. Im as much of a steel snob as anyone, but I find myself being more and more interested in the subtle (and not so subtle) differences found in budget steels. It's one thing for a manufacturer to just use a super steel and assume it will provide great performance, and charge accordingly. It's another when a manufacturer can pick from 15-20 different budget steels to hit the price point/performance level they're aiming for.

Fun fact: this steel with the German steel number 1.4034 (its an aisi 420 variant) was really a very versatile steel here in Germany in the last 100 years till now... Even though it has high Chromium amount and lower c amount, with the right heat treat from the right bladesmiths the c amount rose to about 0.8 and the chromium got down to 12 where the steel is getting a good retention AND still very good corrosion resistance... You shouldn't have used it as prybar in the cold though... HRC s of 60 and even 61 HRC (with a deep cooling in the HT-process) were achieved by German bladesmiths...
I'm so interested in CJRBs new budget steel. Very much awaiting that edge testing. I've heard it strops back so easily to scary sharp. Kind of why i liked Cold Steels AUS-8, i felt it stropped back better than most budget steels.

That music is burned into my brain
"Not a terribly good game" that's like saying having AIDS isn't terribly good for your health
I am surprised that cold steel edge was not sharper than that from the factory... In my experience Cold steel factory edges have been extremely Sharp
oh it was sharp, just a tad thicc
Regular vs SS? Sorry if I missed it
Yeah, 4034 is just 420HC with the little bit of vanadium taken out, so the wire burr will be harder to remove and a tiny loss in wear resistance.
As we have seen in other brands, 420HC varies a lot by the quality of the heat treat. 88 isn't bad, but I want better.
125 after the edge was reprofiled to be much thinner. The Spydie was already close to 17 degrees.
Thank you.
Ya I’m off topic type of guy! Sorry, are those sharping systems worth the $? Do you ever sharpen freehand? If so what do you use? Thank you Sir and everyone have a great day and stay sharp!
GREAT comparison! As always, THANK YOU for all you do for us!
RIP Brickey!!!
I dig the black tenacious.
Thyssen-Krupp German Steel. Pretty much same as 420HC. But since it's Thyssen-Krupp well it definitely is Good. For its specific uses. And People need to keep that in mind... When they decide to torture test different knives and get mad when it Breaks or gets Dull.
Great video... As "always"!!!
CS says they get 57.5 RC from the 4034.
with that knight helmet beside him, someday he will reveal that he's SwaggerSoul's brother
Good information Pete, thanks.
you ever try 9cr damascus?
Is that the old Cold Steel, or the post sale of the company Cold Steel?
0:22 - “rapidly changing “. Did you mean rapidly declining?
ROLF! "It's a Tenacious you idiot!"
