Yes! That's the tone! The research I've done into Jerry's sound has him talking a lot about this, using multiple amps to stack tones on top of one another, not for stereo or wet/dry (but accomplishing stereo by panning multiple takes). I think Jerry's genius was building sounds in the studio that were live, where the musicians got that instant feedback in their headphones, which spurred creativity. This was my first video on your channel, looking forward to watching more!
Tom / Blink-182 are a big reason why I picked up the guitar when I was younger. I have always loved the guitar tone and have tried to emulate it in the past, but never succeeded. This was an excellent video, Rick! Nailed the tone.

Been waiting years to hear this tone recreated as closely as you guys did. amazing stuff!! thanks so much for all the effort and for sharing!!! Any chance you can also do some of the clean tones on Enema & TOYPAJ?
This is absolutely superb, I like this one better than the TOYPAJ tone because the latter sounds quite gainy and harsh with my guitar to me while this one sounds amazing. How about the AFI tone or some bass recreation from Blink next? :D The Mark Hoppus bass tone islegendary as well!
Oh, nailed it! I often hear people sharing profiles and I’m like you’re close but that’s not it. I would honestly love to nail his live tones too though. They were super good too and I don’t think they’re any easier to replicate without inside knowledge.
Wow, I remember about 20 years ago back in high school, kids all boys love to play blink 182 song. Sure I also have some trick about the guitar tone at that time. I always use 2 mm guitar pick, dunlop jazz. We don't have any tube amp, but some solid state head cab and some local made. Some have thick distortion channel but flubby. My trick is always put wah wah pedal in front of my chain to filter the middle freq tone. digital wah pedal have a mix knob. Thats it. I was 15 16 years old at that time, I realized that the mid-high frequency attack was very important for some rhythm parts of the song. That's why I chose wah pedal to get that trick.
I can very much appreciate the time, effort, research you did getting this tone. I play in a pop-punk cover band and this is the tone I've been chasing for a very long time. With the info you presented here I've been trying to dial in a comparable Helix preset and I feel I'm getting pretty darn close.
@@makebelievestudio I did take a look at them! Mostly just looking for the best route to apply it to my live tone with the Helix. Biggest thing for me is individual amp settings. Once I get there I can balance things out as needed.

Or is each take a single blended signal from both amps and then those two tracks are panned? I have always wondered how they utilized both amps in terms of double tracking.
I wanted to touch base on this “older video”. It seems a lot of people are overlooking the JMP-1 that is clearly visible. I have never seen the JCM head on the road with Tom, just the recto, the Mesa triaxis and the jmp-1. I truly believe the JMP-1 is being used through the power amp for the Marshall tones. As a JMP-1 owner myself, the unique clean tone of Adam’s song and Stay Together for the Kids is 800000% a clean setting I use on the JMP-1. The 900 doesn’t even compare. No one touches on the JMP-1 especially for clean tones which again is 100% identical. Thoughts??

Great video guys! You've done a great job with the information you have. Im also a fan of finding the secret recipe for toms tone its quite the hobby. I 100% agree with the 900 doing a lot of the work within the tone and the mesa being the heavy presence. Ive found when i started cranking the clean on the 900 i was getting that high crunch that im looking for. I often wonder if the jmp1 was used through the 900 on the album, cause every time i play through a jmp it blows my mind how much it sounds like enema. Wendy clear intro to me sounds like a jmp mixed in, thats just my ears but. Did you guys record a room mic aswell?
Thank you so much for the kind words!! No room mic on this. TBH the room mics looked pointed towards the clean amps. I dont think the JMP1 rackmount was used in the studio. I think it was used to recreate the sounds of the 900 and SJ after TOYPAJ where they needed just a bit more gain than the 900 was giving. That being said I hear what you hear on things like the intro and I think what your hearing with more gain is higher output pickups feeding the amps harder. I think Wendy Clear is Toms strat or les paul with the invader to my ears.
Pretty close! Only thing it needs now is the outboard compression that was applied by Tom Lord-Alge to the final mix! Hope we could see a NAM profile for this soon!
hey I'm a bit late but got a few questions if you don't mind ^^ I've tried blending amps (both real into loadbox and plugin amp sims) a few times and sometimes it works, sometimes you get a weird phasey mess and I don't really get why. Anything you had to do here to make the blend work? I'm aware you can quad track, and I recently heard of a trick to phase reverse before and after 1 of the 2 amps to make them blend better. Just curious if you did any of those for this sound or if this should just work as is. Also, I have a jcm 900 4100 with the 5881 power tubes. I got it in a trade and wasn't really aware of the debate around them at that moment. Any opinions on the different jcm900 models, their power tubes and if it matters much for this tone?
