Is writing about divorce overused and I shouldn't write about it? But it really represents me and my story and I am sincere about it. My counselor told me it is common and nearly a story of 1 in 4 and not to write about it, but I love what I wrote and it ia my story.

Hi, I think if you feel that it represents you well and that you have a unique and thoughtful perspective to share, then go for it!

don’t worry about the topic, worry about how you convey it. some of the best essays I’ve read have been “overused” topics but they always added their unique perspective and twist to it.

So if you're a narrow-minded condescending elitist jerk, don't be yourself in the essay! So much for the advice of sharing who you are!

why do they even have the whole essay thing to begin with? what if you are just a normal kid with no bad experiences or trauma, who wants to go to college to learn math and business. your not trying to win the sympathy olympics here, just learn basic college education

Idk how common, but be cautious with religion. Your conversion story isn't going to be meaningful to anyone outside of your religion, and it is easy to sound as though you are proselytizing. If you are going to write about religion, make it personal, focus on aspects of community and/or how your religion contributes to your understanding of the world outside of religion. Make sure it is unique and speaks about you in a way that does not apply to everyone in your religion.
For example "Jesus saved me and I am a better person now" applies to every Christian. It isn't meaningful to non-Christians, isn't unique and doesn't explain anything about who you are and how you can contribute to your college/community/etc. (And I mean absolutely no offense to Christians, I'm just using a common example for those in the West)
