11:49 Someone from Japan, confirm that cash and setting that used in Acro Silky Backstory is in the late 80’/early 90’ while Momo Okarun based on their communication device is happening in early this century.
Some background for why Acro Silky doing multiple job even become sex workers to sustain hers, although hinted at adaptation but not clear enough as the manga or common knowledge that needed to know if you are not Japanese or familiar with it.
    1. She was balerina before, she had to give up that life because she was pregnant and unfortunately the bastard run away when Japan’s economic took down turn at this time.
    2. At those time many Yakuza became loan sharks, and she was entrapped in their scheme. So the scene where you see she was saving some money was to pay up those Yakuza.
    3. She took some of the debt payment for her daughter’s birthday gift, yep those red dress. That is why the payment wasn’t enough(that always would be anyway) and Yakuza took her daughter as collateral.
    4. If you are in relation with Yakuza no matter the nature of that relationship then you couldn’t asked authorities(police or any form) to help you, because in society’s POV that is all your own fault.
    5. Yakuza also run human trafficking scheme, and it compasses all kind of business that use human as commodities. While there are no clear explanation about the daughter, many believed that she was dead/nothing good happened to her.
    6. There are a panel depicting Acro Silky reunited with her daughter in afterlife but it was more about confirmation of Aira’s prayer rather than the fate of the daughter.
    5. Asia’s culture are believed that young children, especially those with extreme mental events, to be able to peek into the Veil. But as they grownup and move on from such events that ability is gone. So yeah Aira is ordinary girl, with special circumstances.
    6. A lot of people thought that ManekiBaba is cruel, but if you think more, she did what she had to do in those situations. If she didn’t blatantly explained Aira’s conditions then Acro Silky couldn’t come to terms with of her wrongdoing and decided to sacrifice herself for Aira. Consequently if she didn’t blatantly explain the consequence of Acro Silky then Aira couldn’t comprehend what she would have to do, at least give peace, for Acro Silky so she didn’t just lost into the Void. She maybe jaded of this kind of events as she probably witnessed many times over now, but she isn’t cruel at all. Because how do you ask some one to sacrifice for others while they have much suffering in limited time??how do you ask stranger to call their stalker as beloved ones, again in limited time??as ManekiBaba did, by blatantly diss the cold hard truth and it pierced through.

Things about Acro Silky's past that wasn't clearly shown in the anime for obvious reasons: Yes, she was in debt and one of the ways she earned money was through selling her body. The final dance that's animated so beautiful happens on a rooftop, right before she jumps devastated that she'll never see her daughter again and what will probably happen to that daughter now.

I think they added the part where she got cut up by the broken glass and spitting blood in order to change the cause of her death not to be suicide, but bleeding to death. But of course they're still hinting on the suicide for the manga readers.

@@DurianKing I don't think so. She's still dancing on the roof, than the lights started moving vertically, and you hear the sound of her crashing the second before they show Aira meet her.
Though they could've done the glass thing to make the cause more vauge.

On some level Aira was probably trying to help make sure Acro Silky went to a positive afterlife by telling Silky she loves her, but I think Aira was also letting out her own emotions and expressing her love and remorse to her own mom-in a sense sharing a familial love/connection for those they have lost.

"When you lose parents, you're an orphan, when you lose your wife or husband, you're a widow, but there's no name for those who lose their children, maybe because it's the worst thing that can ever happen to someone." A quote from Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
This episode made me cry, when shows that have a lot of comedy does emotional stuff like this, it hits so much harder. Like when the OG Cartoon Network shows like Adventure Time started doing serious episodes, it hits you right in the heart unexpectedly. DanDaDan has officially made my top 10 animes of all time.

I think it is more because child death was so common in the past that there did not need to be a name for it
If I remember correctly, it wasn't until the economic boom after World War 2 that all children surviving into adulthood became a rule, rather than the exception

I don’t think that is the case, if so then she could see many other spirit. It is common believe, at least in Asian culture, for a child to see supranatural/paranormal especially if they exposed to extreme mental condition. They sort of gain pseudo ability to see thing beyond the veil, but as they grow up and they move on from those condition, that ability is gone.

There are some scenes that were censored because of sensitive subject matters, but is still very well animated and hinted:
Silky as a mother is seemed to be a sex worker but also work tons of different jobs at the same time because of her financial struggles, as the first scene of her flashbacks shows her waking up of what is actually a love hotel, and the money on the table looks like what her client has left.
She didn’t actually die on the streets nor get hit by a car. The scene of her dancing actually took place on the roof of her apartment building, as the starry sky and all the sparkles hints that they were city lights, and it looked like a surface of water because it was raining. And when she did a backflip on the last scene it was actually her jumping off and killing herself, as very soon after the scene u can hear the loud stump and a blackout.
It is such a beautiful episode and the whole story and animation is just so well done and heartbreaking :/

I 100% disagree, destroying the childhood of a kid with the gut punching reality of death can cause irreparable psychological damage to the kid, giving them a more hopeful tamed response till they are old enough to undersand the concept of life and death is the more delicate approach, and more positive attitude to the future instead of cynicism.

    • @TheGenreVerse

Kids are more resilient than they get credit for.
Telling kids that Rover or Fluffy went to live on a farm up state when they actually got hit by a car is not the best idea. It's worse with human life.
They don't need gruesome details, and they may need time and reminders to help them process it, but they can handle it.
Lucas, our son, learned about death at 4 when my grandmother passed. It took him a few months to fully grasp the situation, and he had questions, and he got sad, but he processed it, and we maintained a level of trust with him, while showing him respect on a human level.
Just our take and where/why Christine said what she did.

I realized I was going to die at some point when I was a little kid. I was reading an encyclopedia when I was about 7 years old, something about the cycle of life. Suddenly everything I have hear in conversations around me and seen in other media up to that point clicked together and I was like... "Oh, that can't be right? Is it? Oh, it is. That's unfair". Sadness ensued.
Children can and should learn stuff and it's better for the parent to explain it to them than having your curious child experiencing existencial dread after discovering it by themselves.

  • @fivegears

Regarding Aira's dad lying about her mother, I gotta agree. Kids never get enough credit and I think they want to know the truth more than any adult does. I talked to my own kids about it as soon as it came up naturally and I'm sure it was a lot to process at the time - but it's a helluva lot easier to process than having an illusion shattered beforehand.
I grab up quotes when I can for whatever situation because, well, there's a ton of talented writers who can put it better than I can. In this case the first one that came to mind was from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead: "Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one, a moment, in childhood when it first occurred to you that you don't go on forever. It must have been shattering-stamped into one's memory. And yet I can't remember it. It never occurred to me at all."

So I wanna say I don't think Aira's dad was lying to her about her mom coming back. I think he meant it as in when her spirit comes back to see Aira.
And it could be how he rationalizes it for himself, to believe his loved one will come back to watch over them as a spirit. It's a thought that can get people through their grief sometimes.

To provide additional context on how we East Asians view ghosts- very specifically ghosts (the residual afterlife of a human being), not kami or yokai etc.:
In our belief, the idea of 'evil' spirits is less of the malevolent entity like demons portrayed in the west and more of a vengeful or sorrowful being that was not able to pass on in peace. The key is 'not being able to pass on in peace'. In most cases it will be because of a form a tragedy. It is very rare where a malevolent person becomes a harmful ghost because we somewhat believe that in the afterlife, their victims or other vengeful ghosts would punish these wrongdoers. It only becomes problematic when the vengeful spirits' grudges becomes overwhelming- harming unrelated people or curses that are passed down through generations without us understanding what even was the underlying cause in the first place.
In some beliefs, they (ghosts) can also be described as a concentration of 'Yin' energy, which (in one of its definitions) refer to the hidden or the subconscious. In some cases, spirits may be a form of strong residual subconscious thoughts or emotions rather than an accurate reflection of the individual themselves.
The superstitious fear them out of potential harm they may cause but they are also very much pitiful beings that may be doomed not to be able to find eternal peace / enter the wheel of reincarnation (depending on your beliefs). As such 'exorcising' the spirits means both 'destroying' as well as 'saving' the spirits.
Do note that this is a vey general comment regarding superstition among the east Asian cultures. There will be slight difference between Shinto/ Korean folk religion / Chinese folk religion There are even difference between Japanese, Korean and Chinese Buddhism as well. But i think the approach we take towards the supernatural is more or less lies within each others' idea of common sense.

    • @TheGenreVerse
      @TheGenreVerse  2 місяці тому

Thanks for sharing this. There are a lot of similarities to the West in this, although I think we differ most on the focus of our ghost stories. Vengeance is used often, but there's more about "unfinished business" with "good" ghosts in the culture.
      Thanks again for sharing this!

AND this is not the saddest backstory in this series. there are 2 more. the other one can be adapted maybe, around season 2 or 3. really hope they can adapt a lot of this series. it's just a masterpiece. the crazyness doesn't stop, not a single chapter. it may have something like a breather, but it eventually picks up its pace pretty quickly. and the manga started to really piques interest too especially its title "Dandadan". the manga just recently tackled the term "dandadan" (currently have 170+ chapters with averaging 19 pages. the anime adapted just around 11-15 chapters at this point, episode 7) with the manga showing the imagery of something like 'budhism' or some sort. then after that chapter released, the author took a month-long break to research.

Speaking for myself (Kyle), I've been through a lot of real life things over many decades, including actual war, and it's made it harder to get me super emotional over things that don't directly affect me, or don't remind me of certain things I've faced. I cried for Violet Evergrarden... Multiple times.
Just because I'm not crying, doesn't mean it doesn't make me sad, or that I can't relate at all. It just means my emotional resilience was higher than the emotional damage 😆... And that's okay!
And being MORE emotional to things like this is okay too. Especially if that means you've been BLESSED and LUCKY enough to have never faced something so traumatizing, that it makes it harder to cry.

Maybe instead of seeking echoes, you could consider what makes each person/channel feel/say what they do. You could seek out to understand why they didn't have a specific reaction like others.
Why do we feel sad our way, what makes us analyze things the way we do, why does the dude in the hoodie make so many pop culture references???

And I didn't mention the reaction of a person who is a former (probably unsuccessful) ballerina (in the video she accurately described all the figures from the ballet), her mother a single mother... (in real life). I didn't want to throw another nuclear bomb of emotions at you. About those veterans.... My uncle was a professional soldier his whole life (now retired). His son (my cousin) - the father of 7 children, is a professional soldier until now in the paratroopers. He has experienced most of it. Still, that doesn't make him a stone monster without emotions. He has to give his children even more love. Just because someone has PTSD doesn't mean they're a saint. By the way: someone tell that guy on the right to put a camera on his monitor. Like the Egyptian fashion "in profile" went out of fashion 2000+ years ago... Thank you. GL..🙃

I'm not trying to detract from the episode, or the work you guys put in to make us this reaction...
But man, maybe speeding up the content isn't the best way to edit this for copyright. On top of the audio distortions already there.
I personally think maybe just cutting would have worked better. That's all, other great job. I hope people are really showing this channel love for this series of reactions.

Thanks for the feedback. There would have been so much more cut. I use the speed-ups a lot less these days, is a balancing act that doesn't work for everyone. Thanks for the support though!

Actively working on it. Probably won't get it done tonight though. It and this week's Yakuza Fiance are to priority for publishing tomorrow.

Not geared towards action and comedy that's just a side effect, it is at it's core a romance romcon.

They censored the jump from the building during the dance but it's normal, this kind of thing need to be PEGI more than 12 or 16y old. In the Manga, we saw cleary the scene. But that was well made here with the music and the "360° dancing doll" during the flashback.

Yeah I assumed she collapsed or got hit in the road. I wish they made the building thing clearer because it adds to the tragedy...

@@TheGenreVerse It's a problem to show cleary a su*cide because it's really a problem in Japan and the show is not for adult only. But if you read the manga, you gonna have a full uncensored version (even since the beginning).
