  • This one's for Dave Brockie "Oderus Urungus", singer and original member of Richmond, Virginia's legendary metal band Gwar. I've been a true Gwar fan since I was a little punk kid riding the roads raising hell and blasting head banger music. Wait a second! I'm still like that. Hail Oderus!!!!!

    David, as I knew him, and I were best friends from about 5 to 15 years of age, when I moved across town. We were inseparable and quite a mischievous pair. What he would ultimately became was evident early on in his imagination, creativity, artwork, and just plain craziness. While we didn't maintain close ties over the years, we did connect every now and again. I was heartbroken when he passed at age 50. He lived life full, doing what he loved. I escaped addiction, unfortunately, he did not. Thanks for the great memories, dude.

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out the Dave Brockie memorial video and the nice comment about your time with Dave before the Oderus days. It must've been cool making those memories as well and hang onto them forever. In the near future I plan make a few other Gwar related videos and share them, so stay tuned or if you like, then join the ride, like and subscribe. I'm always uploading new footage and other stuff from years past that I've never made public until now. Rock on for Dave Brockie. Thanks for watching.

      I've been a Gwar fan since I was a kid and to visit the grave of Dave Brockie and to walk the areas where they roam in Richmond was an adventure in it's own. I've met most of the members and seen them live with Orderus. A head banger punks bucket list. Thanks for the comment and strange travels

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out the channel and for the comment. I'm blessed to have seen and met Gwar with the legendary Dave Brockie and you are as well for seeing the legendary Pantera (Dimebag Darrell R.I.P.), which I sadly never got to see. I've seen Slayer twice, Anthrax, Cannibal Corpse, Iron Reagan, Municipal Waste, Agent Orange, The Misfits, Jim Breuer , Mac Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Hank 3, Gwar, D.R.I., 1349, Murder Junkies, Missing 23rd, Pleasures of the Ultraviolent, Type O Negative, NIN, Marilyn Manson (Anti-Christ Superstar Tour), Cradle of Filth, Satyricon, Super Joint Ritual, Forsaken Profits, Toke, Bask, Yob, Primus, Ministry, Carpenter Brut, Unknown Hinson, Exodus, and hundreds more of underground bands, but I never saw Pantera, for they never played near me at the time of their prime touring years. Anyway, I plan to make some other "Gwar" related footage for the channel in the near future, so if you like, then join the ride, like and subscribe. Rock on man. \m/ \m/

    Thank you for this as I have yet to venture out to Virginia.
    The first time I met Dave was in Eureka, CA 2001 at the Stabbin' Cabin with Brad and Mike as DBX.
    After witnessing my first GWAR show in October of 1990 at Guerneville, CA at the River Theater next to the Russian River at the age of 19 under the influence of some illicit substance during Agony Column, I was hooked. GWAR was the drug I needed. I watched Bishop sing Cool Place without his helmet. It was surreal.
    I've always mentioned how kind Dave was to me which truly stands out. He would treat any fan as if they were a long lost brother, just on first glance. He made you feel special and cool to be hanging out.
    RIP lost god! Blow Black Wad.

    I'm glad I got to see this- thanks for putting it up. The first time I had heard of Gwar I remember saying what the hell is that supposed to be? Then my Step brother dropped a tape in of Scumdogs of the universe and I was a fan by the first side- it was always fun to hear em and they did it without skimping on the rockin out/ heavy stuff.

    Thanks so much for uploading this brother. I've been a fan of GWAR and Dave since I was a kid in the 90's and was so sad to hear he died when it happened, unbelievable. He is a true legend and musical genius. Glad the boys kept it going too, I don't think Dave would've wanted it to ever stop. They created an institution. What a beautiful tribute to him and his life's work in that headstone too, I have never seen that til now. Thanks again. 👍

I thought since you're a Gwar fan that I'd let you know about my other videos from the world of Gwar. I did a video at their bar in Richmond, VA and that video's called The Gwar Bar in Richmond Virginia (Full Tour) and is in my famous music locations and the other video's called Death Site of Oderus Urungus of Gwar (R.I.P. Hello again and thanks for the comments. I tried to do a video at the Hadad’s Lake outside of Richmond where the viking funeral took place with Oderus's full body gear being sent off on the raft and being lit by Slymenstra Hymen'S flaming arrow, but the place charges $20 a car to even go into the park, so I had to skip that video spot. I've seen the videos you mentioned and liked those as well as Randy Blythe's eulogize at the memorial. Hail Oderus..... \m/ HG

First of all, thanks for the kind words and for watching my channel and also I had to be the one to do this video, for Gwar has been such a big part of my life growing up. I've seen them live and met most of all the original guys and been to their hangouts in Richmond. When the metal/punk community lost Dave Brockie and his Oderus costume was burned at his viking style funeral on the lake, it touched my strange little heart to say the least. I love remembering those fun and wild times we all had when Gwar was in town or on the stereo and TV as always. Was the show in 2008 in Newportnews by chance? Where Sleazy declared he was running for president and they had shirts saying Sleazy for President?
    I first heard of Gwar from friends of mine who lived in a town over and where in the punk scene there. We just connected and became close with the whole crew. My friend James popped in Live from Antarctica and tho I have heard of the band, I never seen nor heard their music. It was awesome. Then about a year later, a 4 hour metal show that a college radio station played every Wednesday night from Midnight to 4am (collage radio after midnight can play songs with out being censored) put on the whole America Must Be Destroyed release as it just dropped that day. I obviously tapped it.

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for watching the video and for the comment. The show I was talking about took place on October 6th, 2008 in Asheville, North Carolina during Gwar's Electile Dysfunction Tour and I do remember Sleazy P. Martini being there that night. They were on tour with Toxic Holocaust and Kingdom of Sorrow, a side project band of Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed and Kirk Windstein of Down and Crowbar. Amazing show and getting to meet several of the huge metal legends that night was a great moment in my life. That night I hung out with Dave Brockie (Oderus of Gwar), met Jamie Jasta of Hatebreed and Joel Grind from Toxic Holocaust and most of all other band members. I spoke to Beefcake of Gwar in the pit for a second, so it was a night to remember. Ah!... the wonder years. If you like, then you're welcome to join the ride and subscribe for updates. I saw them a few times, once in at Alley Katz in '02 just before going to Iraq. Slymenstra touched my hand and it was a good day, though I didn't take well to the guy who started throwing elbows. Saw them at the Canal Club on New Years '05-'06 but kinda got kicked out a few songs into their set. Alcohol was involved, and my friend and I got there way too early. I last saw them at the Coliseum in late 2013, right after getting home from Afghanistan. Dave died only a few months later. Death Piggy, GWAR, X-Cops, and DBX, all great in their own ways.

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out the channel and for sharing your comment. Gwar is legend and Dave Brockie will be forever missed. Cool comment about Slymenstra, she's a wild lady. My cousin is friends with her and has photos of her sitting on his living room couch. If you haven't already you should check out RAWG, it's Gwar without the masks. It's funny to see them look like actual human rock stars after all the wild costumes they've used. Elbows in the pit are a rascal, but don't feel bad, I've been there too man. I survived two Slayer concerts, one front row on their farewell tour and the pit was insane. I've had people stage dive into my face at punk and thrash metal shows, I've had my finger slashed open by giant spiked jackets at underground punk shows and survived the brutal Wall of Death at an Exodus concert and been through the wringer at a Cannibal Corpse show and even seen the Murder Junkies once, so it's a battle field of it's own inside the pit. But, either way I've loved ever moment of these wild and crazy times. In the near future I plan to film some more Gwar related videos for the channel. Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out the channel and for sharing the comment. Yeah man, Dave Brockie will forever be missed, as well as all those guys one day. Cory Smoot's final resting place is still unknown as far as I can research online. Next time I see the guys from Gwar I'll try and ask them, but it may be one of those very private matters like a lot of famous rockers. Legends those guys will forever be. If you like to join the ride and subscribe for all the latest updates, I plan to be releasing some new Gwar related footage as soon as I get through filming and editing and doing the photography for thumbnails, so stay tuned either way, for I'm always filming and uploading new stuff and even older footage from years ago. Anyway, thanks again for watching and send your friends to the channel. All is welcome here at the Highway Ghost.

I too was lost when Dave Brockie died and wish I could've attended his viking funeral cremation upon the lake in Virginia, whenever they burned his Oderus costume by flaming arrow. What a legend he was and forever will be. I too have loved that band since I was a kid back in the day. I forgot to say how that I have seen the Joan Rivers interview and it was funny as hell. I always loved how they'd appear on all the straight laced shows just to piss everyone off and make them laugh at the same time. That's the evil genius of Gwar. Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out the channel and for the fun comments and UA-cam link to your live show. I think we might've met at the Odd sometime or another. Yes, I'm a true native of WNC, born and raised, but I drift in and out like the fog from a horror movie. About Dave Brockie's grave/memorial, it's such an amazing way to honor him and his wild legacy, as well as the band Gwar. I too loved the art and effort it took to create his marker stone. The face looked so real like he was taking an eternal nap there. Truly a work of art in it's own way. About Asheville's music scene: I truly miss the old Odditorium set up with the curio cabinets lining the darkened walls and being full of old vintage restaurant booths and having a pinball table in the front corner next to that old creepy antique baby carriage, but things change and the cafe section must've helped them survive the closures of venues. I've been a true freak from day one in the punk/metal scene and I'm still bummed about The Mothlight closing. The Orange Peel has dropped off having heavy and wild bands like they used to and I heard they tried to tell Gwar to tame it down last show, but who knows. I don't think I've seen your band live, but maybe. I've been to over 300 events and concerts so far in this life, so it's all a blur at times and I travel so much at times I meet folks everywhere. Anyway, there's more to come on the weird side of town here at the Highway Ghost, so stay tuned or join the ride, like and subscribe. Rock n Roll brother.... \m/

      I don't know for sure, but if I had to guess the image of his face looks like it was taken from a face cast. Probably one that was used to make many an Oderus mask. That's the story I like anyway since it seems so fitting...

    Interesting note, His remains are in fact Not there, at this time. Someone who works at Hollywood cemetery, a tour guide I think, said that its more of a monument. The family and band were still at odd's over Brockies remains and what he left behind.

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. From what I heard, Dave's father showed up at Gwar's studio demanding his son's ashes and was given a small amount to keep, then the rest were buried here at this location long before the monument was ever there. I tried to locate the actual burial site of the ashes before the monument was ever there and nobody would tell me or knew, but it was there hidden. This was straight from the source from what I was told, so who knows, but either way I don't see the band spending this much time and money making such an amazing grave marker to not put it over their beloved front-man's ashes. The location before the memorial maker came was very hush hush and only band members and family and close friends knew about it from what I was told by people from Richmond and I actually know Gwar's close friends. My cousin is best friends with original members. But anyway that's the daily Gwar rant. Love that band either way. Thanks for stopping by the channel and rock on man.

    They may have kept a few of the remains to actually bury. But I believe most of Dave was burned in a Viking Funeral in 2014

    • @HighwayGhost
      @HighwayGhost  2 роки тому

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out the channel and the Oderus memorial video. When Dave Brockie died, we all lost a rock legend and afterwards came a lot of various events surrounding him. From what I've been told from legit resources is that they held both a memorial for Dave Brockie that was for close loved ones and then they held a Gwar style viking funeral farewell for Oderus, in which was his alter ego. This filmed event was held at Hadad’s Lake, where the annual Gwar B-Q took place that same day, and it was there that they cremated one of his Oderus costumes on a raft in the lake in front of hundreds of fans. Slymenstra Hymen lit the fire by shooting a flaming arrow into the decoration of Oderus. This was a huge event and fellow friends attended such as Ice T and his band Body Count and Lamb of God that also played the event and Randy Blythe spoke a eulogy for Brockie. I had a friend that went to see it, but I missed it sadly. During this period of time I heard Dave's father showed up sometime at the studio demanding some of his sons remains and was given a small amount to take, but the rest was said to have been kept and finally buried at the memorial where this was filmed. Even if the band wanted to of held a "real viking funeral", then it couldn't happened anyway, due to strict city regulations of human disposal within a public location. Stay tuned for more strange travels. Join the ride, like and subscribe. Rock on. \m/

  • @paulhinsley1752

    Dave's actually not buried there. He was cremated, and his ashes were on his parents' fireplace. That is only a memorial plot.

    • @HighwayGhost
      @HighwayGhost  11 місяців тому

      It's been said how that Dave's father showed up at the Slave Pit (Gwar's studio) demanding his ashes, so they gave him a small grocery bag of his remains and he left. Then some were said to have been mixed inside his Oderus costume and burned at his viking funeral in Hadad’s Lake in Richmond, VA. Later the memorial was placed and rumors surround it that the rest of his cremains were scattered underneath the amazing marker. Other wise, then why go through the process and cost for this amazing memorial monument to not have something of the person there. Plus, cemeteries have to have something as a burial before they'd allow a memorial in the first place.

    I met Dave solely based on hearing his voice, because I had no idea what he looked like out of costume either. He was sitting at the bar of a local club before the show. I heard him talking and casually went up to him and we chatted for a bit. I had my tongue pierced at the time and had a barbell in with a blue light on the end. He asked me about it when we started chatting. He was such a nice, down to earth guy....I didn't know at the time of meeting him his middle name was Murray or I would have commented about being related....lol....I have been a GWAR fan since 1990 and saw them many times. My first show I was asked as soon as I walked in the door if I wanted to be in the stage show and of course I said yes!!! It was Techno Destructo himself who asked! I was one a several that night put through the meatgrinder on stage and it was such a rush!!!! I will never forget that! I met Dave a couple more times after that. Always approachable and accommodating....he is so missed!!! The first time I saw them after he died, I bawled my eyes out during "The Road Behind" and every time I hear that song, it chokes me up....as much as I love GWAR, I don't think I can see them live again...I tried, but without Dave/Oderus, it's just not the same....thank you for sharing this video....

      Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Thanks for checking out my fan tribute for Dave Brockie aka Orderus Urungus. I enjoyed your comment and it's times like that in which make fond memories that will carry on long after those we cherish are long gone from here. We have similar experiences when it comes to Gwar and meeting Dave Brockie. Like yourself, I too had a hard time seeing them live without him, but I do love the new record a lot and I think Dave would've wanted them to carry on for the fans. Last time I hung-out with Gwar was when they came to town and I waited in the extreme cold to have them sign my banner of band autographs and my 90s Gwar trading card, which they did. I didn't have a ticket for the show, so I drove an hour anyway to say hey to them and to show my support. I got both Balsac and Blothar (original Beefcake) to sign the card since they were the original members and everyone signed the banner. I told Blothar to rock it for Dave and he smiled and said "Hell yeah" as he went up the stairs to the show. They are great guys and loyal to fans and that makes you really want to support them even more. My best friend was inside at the show and he said they played the entire set of Scum Dogs, but I don't think they were allowed to play Slaughterama, for the club told them to "tame it down" (2022). I listened to the show from outside and got to hang out with Barney from Napalm Death, which was great. Hello there, Highway Ghost speaking. Gwar is legend and Dave Brockie was the man and I truly miss him as the front man and his spirit will forever live on. After many long months and finally coming to the point of planning this amazing memorial, as I would assume, they did the respectful thing for all to see in a cemetery and designed this perfect. Plus, cemeteries have very strict burial guidelines as for what goes on graves no matter who wants what where...etc. Hell GG Allin's tombstone was so infamous the church had it removed and Merle his brother donated it to the Murder Museum as a part of the exhibit, so it is what it is. To see the infamous Cuddle Fish, check out my video from the Gwar Bar in Richmond, VA in my famous music playlist, there's also a short video I did at the death site house of Dave Brockie where Oderus left us all behind on this miserable dirtball called Earth.
