I didn't want to go through the work of cutting a pvc tube like some of the other videos I found on youtube; primarily since the desk/chair I use is shared among the family and we all have different height preferences/needs. After feeling skeptical about this fix I figured if it worked for everyone else (in the comments) then I have nothing to lose. Let me tell you, if you're like me and you're not sure at first glance at this video, IT WORKS! Took me like 3min to do and most of that was just looking for a flathead screwdriver since the tools are shared in the house as well. I've been sitting on my chair for about an hour now and the sinking issue which was almost instant upon sitting down is completely gone. I will provide updates if anything changes but WD-40 did the trick so far and I'm happy that this chair we share as a family is still adjustable. No fixed height like with a PVC pipe. I don't mind doing this quick fix as needed. Thank you!
I used 3-in-one oil because it's a little heavier than WD40 and it fixed this problem immediately. I only had to do it once and I had the chair upside down so the oil ran down into the cylinder. Thanks for the information, it fixed an annoying problem.
Pro tip, lubricate the rod at an angle so the lubricant drips down into the cylinder (the part under the chair). I'm not sure but I think it's more about lubricating the o-rings. My theory is that they get dried out and don't hold a proper seal. This actually works. I had to do it twice but it works.
I was skeptical (how could oil solve a problem where something moves TOO MUCH?) but I've been sitting here 20 minutes after spraying it and I'm still at the same height. Thumbs up! Edit: OK, it still sinks but just takes about 25 minutes now instead of 10 minutes. Somewhat of an improvement but it didn't really solve the problem.
Many thanks for going straight to the point, not asking for likes and subscriptions. This is the way videos about fixing stuff should be done. Sadly it did not fix my chair.
It works! Thanks. Saved me a lot of time and pain. I used Rapide DP-60 as I had ran out of WD40. Been seating on it for 30 mins and it has not moved a millimetre.
yesterday my IKEA office chair would sink slowly to the lowest point within a minute...today (so far this morning) it is holding! I don't mind doing this fix a couple times a year because it still allows for the adjustment of the chair height depending on who is using it. Thanks for this video tip!!
Pls HELP me! My chair was making noise and didn't have sinking problem so I sprayed wd40 everywhere. Now my chair started to sink but just 1-2 inch (3-5cm) it has been few days still didn't change.
I've watched several of these videos. This was the last one I saw. Okay . . . So I'm in the garage, I took the chair apart. I got the PVC pipe out, but I stopped and grabbed the WD-40. I figure, this is easy to take apart if it doesn't work, I've got the PVC. Holy smokes! This really works! Thanks!!
mate the most under rated and overlooked fix to the dreaded drop and miss your shot issue, I'm pretty sure the wd40 is just a placebo and wizardry is really what is happening here !! but thanks all the same :)
This worked for me but I would recommend sewing machine oil or similar thin oil as WD40 vanishes over time, it's not really a lubricant but a water displacer (WD), degreaser and general unsticker.
Only been sitting in the chair for about 3 mins but I'm so excited, so far this works I will update later. but before the chair immediately sank upon sitting in it. so it at least works a little. It took me longer to type this comment than it did to fix it. Okay that's not true but it did take very little time. I'm a fast typer.
Bloody Brilliant. Had this chair for years in front of my sewing machine and it went up and down like a yo yo. I did this, it took a couple of minutes and it now works perfectly
Thank you ! Great hint and perfect description. My armchair is almost like new again. I used for lubricating the good old Pjur Original - my preferred tool for lubricating everything at home (for example:door hinges).
It worked so good! Pow! 💣 Update - it started sinking again later. The pattern became: Fix, a week or two weeks ok, then back to sinking. However, becoming so familiar with the parts gave me an idea. 💡 I just cut a black 2 inch PVC pipe to size and replaced the post cover with that. Pow Pow! 💣💣
Great vid, thanks! I suggest a lube that is less susceptible to drying out like 3 in 1 or silicone spray. You'll still have to re-apply, but they might last longer.
This actually worked! First try, too. Make sure to go up and down on the chair for a few minutes to really get that WD-40 to activate, but yeah, this worked!
Thanks for this vid! This is probably a lot like a motorcycle front shock. Dirt and tiny nicks on the cylinder cause the fork oil to leak. Usually cleaning and buffing that cyl. will restore the seal. I assume adding WD40 is about the same for these chairs...fix the seal. I bet a nice clean on that cylinder would help as well. I'll give it a shot!
Thank you so much! Chair is fixed. Your video not only empowered me to learn more things to fix but also made my coworkers look at with me with awe...lol
Thank you very much for sharing this. Really helped. I Prefer this to the other videos where you have to add Pvc pipe and get stuck in just one position.
Handy Video so thank you. It didnt work for me as I seems to have thick rubber washers but these comments did point out the idea of using PVC piping which has worked for me. Thanks again
Excellent video! And honestly, it’s less work than other tutorials, that tell you to just fix it in place. BUT! You are using WD40. That’s a light oil that evaporates. For that kind of duty, I recommend using some sort of greece. I couldn’t find mine, so I went with body lotion. Use something thick. You can go the Boeing route and use dish soap, but your chair will crash and burn. But use greace😉
WoW!! It really does work !!!! It was quick & easy!!! Thank you!!! After applying and a couple of strokes, my chair doesn't sink anymore and I've got the original soft 'bounce' when sitting restored as when it was new 20 years ago ... 🙂In my case, I used Rust Check coat & protect rustproofing that I've sprayed on many demanding jobs over the years. It's an oil which sticks well to anything you spray it on. I wouldn't mind having to spray it occasionally over the years if required ... :-)
Nice video, no faffing about, just straight to the point, though, I could have done with a separate video on how to fit the bit at the bottom when putting it back together :) . I did this about 5 hours ago and it has worked for me. Drops about half an inch when I sit down but I can't remember whether it did that anyway.
Wow im shocked that this worked. Thinking about it i was saying how is grease going to make it from sinking. It would just make it more slippery which in turn would create the chair to sink. I looked on amazon and was about to buy these 3 plastic clamps you put on the main bar but didn't like the fact they were plastic and was reading some of them were snapping in ppl. I decided to try this method and I am shocked that the WD40 worked. Great video dude!
So: pig lard is a great industrial grease - it's been used in bearings in plenty of factories! (and leftover bacon grease makes a pretty good cutting lubricant for lathe/machining work!) AND: if you've got some leftover, it makes a terrific pastry/pie crust -- and today is pi day! :-) (Don't ask me how I know all this - but, yeah. Have actually used bacon grease on a machine lathe and it works great - maybe not *quite* as well as the exotic sulfur cutting fluids, or Re-Li-On - which according to the SDS has a chlorinated paraffin wax? - and is just plain magick for s/s, but anyway! - bacon grease and pork fat work pretty darn well as cutting/tapping greases for standard metals -- and make terrific pastries too! Hmmm ... interesting plan, but I used heavier, better 3-in-1 Oil because it will not break down. WD40 stands for "water displacement 40" and it eventually dries out and turns to laquer that gunks up the works - but the notion of using a heavy, thick oil that will not do that should work, and so far it is working well on my chair. So - same idea, just different oil. Just MY take - your mileage may vary. Still, it may be the easiest and cheapest solution I have found. Thanks, old man. JR
I used Lithium Grease instead of WD-40... This grease is thicker. It seems to be working ! I put in that rod AND arround those small parts. It works...

Can I use car engine oil??
Thanks for that 3-in-1 tip; I will try this instead of WD40.
Another video used Jack oil. Thicker still. But I don't have that and I have three in one so this is great Info.
Surprisingly it helped me with a chair that I've tried to fix by turning it upside down for about 24 hours (with no luck). Thanks a lot!
