I did the extra work to provide understanding and multiple options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing). All you need is a one dollar pipe nipple of the correct length from the hardware store, and a flat head screwdriver. It literally takes about five minutes to install and complete. Example: www.homedepot.com/p/Southland-3-8-in-x-3-in-Black-Steel-Nipple-582-030HN/100192847 Or if you already own some existing pipe, you can cut something and make it work at no cost!
Well done on the video. It helped me out when i was about to throw my $100 chair out the window. I like all the options of fittings you provide and you go into detail about further processes. Nice video. 👍
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial but it also involves taking the chair apart, and with me being disabled, there is no way I can lift the chair and rest it on my table. Plus, I cannot remove the handles, they are part of the chairs design. The chair is about 20 years old and looks totally different to the one you have there. Not trying to be difficult or anything like that, but I am giving an option to people like me who are not able to stand for more than 10 to 15 seconds before falling over. I am basically chair bound.
Honestly, three years later and I'm so thankful I found your video, I didn't have the tools to do what you personally did but, once you said, if you can fill the space it will work, I had an idea, I have a few different/broken/incomplete ratchet sets in my garage, I was able to find a deep socket that fit perfectly and is holding great, best part it was from a set thats old/half of the bits are cracked. I've got a complete set so personally I was just happy I found a use for something I'd never use again! You're amazing. More people need to see this video. Cheers
My wifes chair has been collapsing for at least seven or more years now. I had a 1/2" nipple a little too short. So I added a coupler screwed tight and cut to proper length. Fixed in about 30 minutes. This is about one of the easiest solutions to a problem I have seen on UA-cam yet. Just never though of a so simple fix. Thank a Lot
I like how you messed with several options. Most guys would have done it one way and sold it as the only way ... this gives me several ideas. Sweet. Good, direct, narration - thanks for scripting the narration and sticking to it. short and sweet. nicely done. JR
Thanks, I really appreciate it! I do script everything out in advance to insure that the information in my videos is well structured and thorough, without wasting time or missing information.
I love you. No joke. i have been sitting on the same exact chair for the past 9 months without a proper fix and no money to buy a new one. I am 2meters and 2 cm's tall, and my chair wont raise anymore. Needless to say my backpain has been terrible and unbearable. So thank you, for the extra effort you put into this video. You have saved the spine of a 24 year old
OMG! You BLOODY LIFESAVER!! lol. My good chair (about 5-6 years old) blew out a 2nd time about 9-10 months ago (I actually bought a new gas cylinder the first time) and fortunately my building manager gave me a 2nd hand chair for nothing, so I just threw out the old one. Anyway, 6 months later and the cheap version he gave me developed a faulty cylinder (i'm cursed lol). It's xmas coming up and I didn't want to shell out on a new chair, and this chair is too cheap to bother with a new cylinder, so I've just been putting up with it. Today it slipped down about 10 times in an hour (more than usual) so I thought I'd UA-cam search a DYI fix. And BAM!! Saw your vid! I fortunately had some left over 2.5cm pipe from a project a while back, used my Bunnings Pipe cutter to cut to the correct length (following your awesome instructions) and WHAMMO! Problem solved! Like you I NEVER use the up/down gas lift anyway (unless it's fixing it when it sinks down) so this is perfect! THANK YOU SO MUCH, You just made my day! Actually more like YEAR! haha. GOD BLESS DIY HOW-TO VIDS!! haha. Merry Xmas and Happy HYE to you and yours!
You are my hero, I have this same chair and am in the same situation, I managed to use some 3/4 pvc pipe cut to length and filed down the plastic washer to fit inside the pipe like you showed and the chair is so firm and sturdy again, I have been dealing with this chair sinking for months now and finally have sweet sweet relief, thank you very much
I like how you said this isn't a cylinder replacement video but it actually gave me the knowledge to change out a brat of a cylinder that wouldn't just pop out of the base with a few rubber mallet strikes. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this excellent solution! Did not have to spend a single buck on making sure my old chair stays up in it's highest posistion! You deserve all the thumbs up one can give!
After multiple options to buy a hydraulic rod and their prices and feedbacks ..finally after viewing multiple videos, yours was the best one that gave multiple options and check points and explained very nicely.. I finally picked a lot of things from your video and then implemented in fixing my sinking office chair and it works perfectly well.. now I don't have to buy a new rod. Thank you my friend for posting such a valuable clip ..keep it up with such best practices !!!take care.
I bought a high end chair from a second hand store for $15 but the problem was as indicated in this video, it didn't go up or down. I solved the problem using the exact process outlined here. Amazing, and thank you.
AMAZING VIDEO... precise, clearly spoken, to the point, with options available, and a conclusion. What more can a person ask for, really not much. Thanks 🙏 I am ready to fix my chair.
Mate you are an absolute champion! 5 minutes and an angle grinder on a piece of junk spring I had in the garage and my back, neck and wallet thanks you. Cheers from down under!
Vielen Dank !
Conveniently the hydraulic lifts on the GTRacing website were sold out(I wonder why) so I stumbled upon this video and I'm really glad that I did! This was actually super easy and takes two minutes to do. Head over to lowes and head over to the plumbing section to find the pvc piping. You can find skinny 2' pipes for about 3 bucks and they'll even cut it down to the size you need in store. I also picked up about four half inch 'coupling' pieces. I ended up using 3 coupling pieces instead of the pipe because I forgot to account for the length of the bushings, so the pipe was about a half inch too long and I couldnt use it! Still worked perfectly fine with the coupling pieces and ended up saving myself 30 bucks THANK YOU!!!
Just fixed mine thanks to your video. Used a 3/8 inch by 3 1/2 inch pipe nipple inside a 3/4 inch by 3 1/2 inch pipe nipple as my spacer, took less tha 5 minutes. I am now a subscriber Thanks much for the guide!
hey man, thanks! i just did this a few minutes ago, and it worked just fine. i do have the advantage of my workplace being a repair shop (band instrument repair), but it can easily be done at home too. the hardest part is finding the right length of object to install. i will say that now the chair has less give in it, so when i sit down it doesn't bounce, but that's an acceptable sacrifice
This fix was awesome. Saved me many bucks in some minutes. Very well explained and alternatives suggested in the video. Have your like and comment good sir!
Man I really enjoyed watching your video, you gave me a solution for my problem (however I dont think I will do anything about it because I'm lazy lol) but mostly I like how you narrated it, great video bro!
This is perfect! Took me 7 minutes to fix my chair as you suggested including time to find some old pipe in the basement and cut it to size. I also saw other videos about replacing the whole gas cylinder which costs around $23 for a replacement on Amazon. I'll keep that in mind if I decide I miss the chair being adjustable.
Thank you so much, no more sudden sinking jump scares, it took me less than 5 minutes to apply your fix. nearly tossed my chair for this exact problem. you're a life saver (and money) ♥
Great video, i'm sitting in a randomly sinking chair as I type this. I was fully ready to buy a new one. Now i'm heading to the hardware store for a HUGE savings vs buying new. Thank you!
Thank you! I fixed mine in a few minutes. I didn't have any of the tools and materials in the video, and thank God I had the idea to improvise with the hollow rubber part that comes with sewing threads. Sitting comfortably on it while I type this. Mucho thanks!!!
This was an Awesome fix!!! It was exactly what I was looking for! Easy to follow directions and the multiple options and diagram really helped. Thank you and keep up the good work! I'm subscribed and alerted 😁
i was having an issue where my newly purchased office chair came defective and the metal rod inside the gas cylinder was sliding all the way through the bottom of the chair and touching the floor. I couldn’t find anything on the internet related to my situation but this video actually helped me because once i removed my gas cylinder from the chair i realized that the metal and rubber washer inside were insanely lubricated, which the ones in your video weren’t. So i washed then clean and reinserted and the problem was fixed 🎉 thanks for showing and explained the parts of the chair and their purpose, really helped me figure out what the problem was!
Thanks a lot, this was great tutorial, really easy to follow! I would also like to recommend screw-nuts as option. I used about 15 screw nuts, since I didnt have tools to cut pipes, and it works perfectly!
Thanks so much for this. Like you, I prefer my chair all the way up. Not only did you save me the cost of a replacement gas cylinder, but while adding the pipe nipple I discovered why my chair was a bit wobbly. One of the washers inside was disintegrating. So that got fixed as well. Thanks again!
Thanks for the great video! My gaming chair has recently started to sink, but only sometimes and only to a height that makes it slightly irritating to sit in. I tried to fix it by putting a hose clamp on the upper part of the cylinder at the desired height, but the clamp either moved under weight or broke when I tried to tighten it. I never thought about using a pipe inside the cylinder itself. It's a rather ingenious solution to an irritating problem, in my opinion. I removed the lower cylinder as you showed in the video (it was easier than I expected), took some measurements, and went to the garage. I quickly found a pipe of the right width and cut it to the correct length. With just some electrical tape on the thin cylinder to keep it centered, the chair is like new again. I can't lower it, but since the maximum height is perfect for me, it doesn't really matter. Thanks again for the great video!
Great fix Great video. My barstools kept sliding down especially with overweight people. Watched your video and fixed my 4 stools. I used 3/4 EMT with a steel washer on either end. Cut them just a just about a 1/4 inch shorter so the piston still works a little. Works great!
Great video, even overly helpful with the calipers. I broke mine out just to hasten the process 1.25 pvc cut to fit DONE. Thanks for this simple solution. saved me several hundred dollars on a new chair at least for a few years.
Just fixed my chair with a piece of pipe i got for like 1 dollar at a 2nd hand store. Chopped it to length with hack saw and about 40 min later this chair is better than ever. Thanks!
Hey, you’re the best. I was going to throw my chair away but then I saw your video. I found some spare heavy duty plastic spacers (from washing machine for shipping). Drilled them out so the piston would fit. Reinstalled the parts and my chair is comfortable again. Thanks
Thanks bro I didn't use what u said but I did something different I didn't have a pipe or anything so opened it and used a big amount of black tape and now it's perfect
I didn't have the same tools as you, so I just cut strips from a black tshirt and wrapped them such that the chair couldn't go down more than I needed it. Thanks for the general idea!
I didn't have some of the extra things you mentioned, however we were able to DIY that part and my chair now fits firmer underneath me thank you very much
Thank you! I found a chair that someone threw out and I fixed it with pvc lying around. Really simple instructions to follow and it was fixed in minutes.
absolutely badass... i'm almost 400 lbs and all i could find was a thin metal handle for an old sponge on a stick! But the difference is night and day... Sheesh! being 6 FT my knees was killin me you really helped a lot of people man now i just need to find a way to make my desk a little bit higher 😅 also would not recommend using cheap metal like I did.
I recently got an office chair for free and it was a little beat up and the gas cylinder was busted so it sank constantly. I found this video and I got it fixed in under 10 minutes! Very useful thanks for the help!
Thanks. Very simple instructions. I cut off a piece of rubber garden hose and used that. It is hard enough to support my weight, but soft enough to provide some dampening. It acts like a rubber bump stop on car suspension
Great video! Just got a new chair online and the gas lift was busted. They wanted me to pay for postage to get it fixed, but thanks to this video i fixed my chair for free :)
I have the same problem on my chair. I followed your video, solved it by installed a steel tube which made up by 1 piece of 1/2" BSP nipple & 2 pieces of 1/2" BSP sockets. Thank.
Wow! exactly what I needed! and your instructions were very clear, thank you so much for providing alternative fixes and taking the time to test them!!
Thank you, I have a tall desk so my chair's arm rest didn't reach the table until now. Probably going to buy a new chair because It's not the only problem but it's a great fix until that.
Right on. I didn't have that brand of chair but the part that needs fixing was the same. I just found the metal tube from an old fan base by the dumpster. It was only an 1/8 bigger than the washers, so I called it good. Done. Thanks :)
I also watched an Indian expert video about fixing the issue of hydraulic cylinder. It was too naive, didn't involve any measurements, any use of washers etc. You told very perfectly the whole process. I praise and admit Western people are way ahead than subcontinental lot in approach and use of technology. Impressive work
Thanks for the info this helped a lot. I just found some pvc in my garage and cut it to the right size, added some electric tape to fit it and it was perfect.
Hahaha. No, I did the extra work to give you understanding and options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing). Looks like your lazy to me it really makes sense except for me I just found out my shit is just fucked up I can’t even get that rod to pull out in the middle
Thank you so much for this tutorial! 😁 I was losing my mind with my chair randomly sinking. Found a pipe lying around the house and cut it down with a hand saw. Easy peasy!
1/2" copper pipe works well too. For a year I've been sitting on a thick blanket because my chair wouldn't stay at the top. Today it sank straight to the bottom. Now I can sit comfortably again.
THANK YOU super helpful video I just used a lot of nuts that fit snugly around the inner pipe to fill the gap and keep it at full length, but your way is probably much safer!
i found 4 perfect length nails, hammered down the head so it got 2 flat sides on each nail (so it would fit to put the chair together), then duct taped 4 nails around the iron rod - works flawlessly
I did the extra work to provide understanding and multiple options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing).

I didn't have the same tools as you, so I just cut strips from a black tshirt and wrapped them such that the chair couldn't go down more than I needed it. Thanks for the general idea!
Perfect! You just need to fill the gap; pipe, washers, pencils and duct tape, … or a shirt! Great job!
Thank you for posting this video it's the best one I've seen on fixing my office chair problem.👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thank you for this!!! Super simple solution. Took me 5 mins to fix!!
Perfect! Glad it helped! Thanks for the update!
I didn't have some of the extra things you mentioned, however we were able to DIY that part and my chair now fits firmer underneath me thank you very much
Glad it helped!
Thank you! I found a chair that someone threw out and I fixed it with pvc lying around. Really simple instructions to follow and it was fixed in minutes.
Awesome! Great job, and congratulations on the new chair!
absolutely badass... i'm almost 400 lbs and all i could find was a thin metal handle for an old sponge on a stick! But the difference is night and day... Sheesh! being 6 FT my knees was killin me you really helped a lot of people man now i just need to find a way to make my desk a little bit higher 😅 also would not recommend using cheap metal like I did.
Awesome, glad it helped!
All the same parts present on my chair. PVC worked perfectly. Good video. Thank you.
Awesome!
I'm very grateful for your advice, you helped me to save a bunch of money because I had 2 chairs with the same problem. Thanks a lot.
Great! Glad it helped!
Thank you for the video. Fixed my chair!! No more going down and up.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
wow, an actually helpful video. short and concise
Thanks.
Great fix given most people have a height they prefer and adjustment every time due to a leak is a pain in the arse! well done!
I recently got an office chair for free and it was a little beat up and the gas cylinder was busted so it sank constantly. I found this video and I got it fixed in under 10 minutes! Very useful thanks for the help!
Awesome! Glad it helped!
of all the video i watch about changing gaslift chair, this video helps me out! thanks
Thanks. Very simple instructions.
I cut off a piece of rubber garden hose and used that. It is hard enough to support my weight, but soft enough to provide some dampening. It acts like a rubber bump stop on car suspension
Excellent!
This was perfect, made a big difference! Probably get another 4-5 years out of this chair now (:
Great video! Just got a new chair online and the gas lift was busted. They wanted me to pay for postage to get it fixed, but thanks to this video i fixed my chair for free :)
Glad it helped you out!
I have the same problem on my chair. I followed your video, solved it by installed a steel tube which made up by 1 piece of 1/2" BSP nipple & 2 pieces of 1/2" BSP sockets. Thank.
Perfect, great job!
Thank you brother! I made this with my chair and now it's perfect. Thank you!
Great! Glad it helped!
Wow! exactly what I needed! and your instructions were very clear, thank you so much for providing alternative fixes and taking the time to test them!!
Glad it helped!
Thank you, I have a tall desk so my chair's arm rest didn't reach the table until now. Probably going to buy a new chair because It's not the only problem but it's a great fix until that.
Thanks for the technique,
In lockdown I was able to fix chair without buying anything
Awesome!
I just fix my chair right now, thank you so much for this video sir.
Awesome, great job!
Hey man I just fixed my chair in less than an hour. Thanks for the tips, much love.
Awesome! Great job! Glad the video helped!
I used the 3/8" by 3" nipple and it worked great. Thanks for saving me from buying a new chair!
Awesome! Great job! Glad it helped!
Right on. I didn't have that brand of chair but the part that needs fixing was the same. I just found the metal tube from an old fan base by the dumpster. It was only an 1/8 bigger than the washers, so I called it good. Done. Thanks :)
Awesome, that’s perfect! Great job!
I also watched an Indian expert video about fixing the issue of hydraulic cylinder. It was too naive, didn't involve any measurements, any use of washers etc. You told very perfectly the whole process. I praise and admit Western people are way ahead than subcontinental lot in approach and use of technology. Impressive work
Thanks, I appreciate it. I work as a Mechanical Engineer for a living, so I probably go into more detail than most others.
Thank you so much! THat was a clean tutorial, and glad that it worked. I fixed my chair without spending a penny. THanks to How-To & Reviews
That’s great to hear, glad you got it fixed at no cost! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
Thanks for the info this helped a lot. I just found some pvc in my garage and cut it to the right size, added some electric tape to fit it and it was perfect.
Perfect! Great job!
Thanks dude, this helped me to fix my chair, I had some pvc pipe laying around in my house and that did the trick :)
Perfect! Great job!
easy and straight forward! thank you
Glad it helped!
Big Thanks for this great Video! It saved my day on my not working chair 🙂
"Easy Simple Fast Free Cheap" yeah right, looks like i need a workshop
Hahaha. No, I did the extra work to give you understanding and options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing).
All you need is a one dollar pipe nipple of the correct length from the hardware store, and a flat head screwdriver. It literally takes about five minutes.

Or if you already own some existing pipe, you can cut something and make it work at no cost!
Looks like your lazy to me it really makes sense except for me I just found out my shit is just fucked up I can’t even get that rod to pull out in the middle
@@NotOnlyLiveOnce definitely. That will take care of it.
@@MxtrixNKY Not very supportive now are we.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 nah this comment has me dying
Thank you for the video. i 3d printed the tube i needed. it was 1,1cm x 2,4cm diameter and 9.8 cm long. it was a hour long print and it works great.
Awesome!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! 😁
I was losing my mind with my chair randomly sinking. Found a pipe lying around the house and cut it down with a hand saw. Easy peasy!
Perfect! Glad it helped!
1/2" copper pipe works well too. For a year I've been sitting on a thick blanket because my chair wouldn't stay at the top. Today it sank straight to the bottom. Now I can sit comfortably again.
Perfect, that will do the job! Glad to hear your chair is back in business!
THANK YOU super helpful video I just used a lot of nuts that fit snugly around the inner pipe to fill the gap and keep it at full length, but your way is probably much safer!
That’s perfect! That will absolutely do it!
worked a charm! $3 fix :) Thank you.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
i found 4 perfect length nails, hammered down the head so it got 2 flat sides on each nail (so it would fit to put the chair together), then duct taped 4 nails around the iron rod - works flawlessly
Perfect! That will do the job for sure! Great job!
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial 😊
