- Plein Air Painting for the first time at Yosemite National Park! In this travel & art vlog, I’ll share two alla prima oil paintings I made at Yosemite, breathtaking mountain views, and relaxing hikes. I’m challenging myself to try new things to grow as an artist. Plein air painting was very daunting at first, but I think I learned a lot from our two days in Yosemite and it's so rewarding to see my oil painting confidence grow! It’s an exhilarating feeling when the painting finally comes together and you have a physical momento of the beauty you spent hours looking at. I just finished a drawing course and I improved my art so much! I realized that just making lines and basic shapes can change and improve our drawings. Also today I have a real life art class and I am excited!

Beautiful paintings!! To answer your question, I am challenging myself by focusing more on the drawing side of painting. Most days I find myself wanting to jump into all the beautiful colors right away. But I am trying to take a step back and focus on the values and shapes of what I am trying to create by using charcoal 😊 it has been a fun and rewarding process.

I’m 60 and retired last year. Getting back into art. Really had to get over the fear of “messing up”. I think that constraint bleeds over from my previous corporate life. Thanks for the encouragement. I’m learning to let if flow and just enjoy the moment. Also we went on a camping trip out west last May and I plan to do some watercolor sketches of our travels! Right now just capturing a few beautiful things from our local walks! Beauty is all around! Best!

I love your videos and watching you paint. I had dabbled with drawing here and there but never took it seriously. In the last year, I have been loving colored pencil drawing of animals and posting them on my IG account. I've started to get commission requests even though I had only started drawing because I enjoy it. You are right, you are never too old to start. I wasn't able to paint for over 15 years and now I'm trying to get back into it while I work full time. I'm challenging myself with taking my own reference photos, exploring layered underpaintings and painting nature as a background. You're right! You need to simplify nature when you paint it.

This is absolutely marvelous... to watch... to listen to... to feel the bliss of the each sketch, each painting, each reflection. I grew up just three hours from Yosemite, and our family would camp there every summer... and ice skate there every winter... and yet every thought of it is still so like an Eden. Thank you for bringing it to life again for so many of us. 🤗

I'm really grateful that you keep going and that you post videos of your process! One of my challenges is that I can no longer use my dominant hand to hold pencils or brushes. Two years after injuring it I'm relieved that I can finally use it for small, quick things like cooking and shuffling a deck of cards, but it still has no stamina for writing, drawing, or painting. I've worked very hard to build strength and improve precision in my left hand, and I am finally making art that feels expressive again.
I find it very helpful to watch left handed artists work, and I just started working on oils, so your videos really help me a lot!

Sounds like the three of you did the hiking the way I consider the "right" way...stopping to enjoy the view and be present in the moment, rather than rushing through it to log miles. Like avid surfer and Plein Air guy Michael Chamberlain says, "It's all about the joy!" Your paintings and drawings look great, and it looks like you captured the main shapes before worrying about the details. That's a great pro-tip for taking on massively daunting subjects like live natural phenomena under shifting sunlight. These days I find myself with one foot each in digital painting and 3D modeling, often incorporating both into each project, with my only real goal to capture silly, fun stuff.
Haha I prefer that type of hiking too! I watched some of his videos before going on this trip and they helped me a lot! Thanks so much! The time constraints really helped me not to focus on details too much. Both of those mediums sound so intimidating to me but I’m glad to hear you’re having fun with them! 😊

I was very artistic and talented when I was younger and was influenced, as you were, to go down the stable route. In my case, it was Civil Engineering and I stuck it through and then went into technology and consulting after grad. Now years later, I see my talent and eye have diminished and have made me rather crappy at drawing (dont even get me started at painting). This pushed me further away from it even though I really miss it a lot.
I've taken up pottery as a rebound activity recently lol - if I am crappy at it, that's ok, I have no history with it! And maybe that would help me lower my expectations and get back to drawing for the pure pleasure of it.
Just thought I'd share as it seems art always brings out the emotions in people. ❤️

I’m really glad I stumbled across your channel. Your artwork and videos are beautifully made. How did you manage to become a full time artist and be able to sustain yourself? And was that challenge in itself?
Thank you Cristina! It was a challenge to make the decision to pursue art full time. I try to keep a variety of income streams when it comes to art- UA-cam advertising, selling art, & commissions. I don’t make too much from any one thing but having many different sources helps. I’m also planning to sell prints and open a Patreon soon. Hope that helps!
