Thomas Harris normally took about 10 years to write a book. The fact that this one was rushed, proves he was pressured to get it done. I wonder what we would have gotten if he went at his normal pace.
He didnt want to do it. It was forced on him by the producers of the movie, because they said if he didnt write it, theyd get someone else to. TBH, Hannibal was a shitty novel too, so it probably wouldn't have been much better
I love the continuity nods in this film. I mean, how will any of us every forget the climactic scene in the first movie where Hannibal fights Crawford with a katana?
This film would have been infinitely better if it was just a standalone story and not part of the Hannibal series. Just change the main character's name and pretty much all the film's problems disappear.
3:18 I'm glad you mentioned that. By the by, in France, the polygraph has been recognized as 'torture propre'. It's a kind of torture that includes humiliation. Not only is the so-called lie detector total quackery, but it's also been judged, in France, where the action takes place, as an unjustified form of degradation. That being said, I do not remember when France recognized it as torture propre, exactly. Even if it were not total quackery, it is apparently easy to cheat on a lie detector test.
Poor Harris. To stop anyone else prolonging the demise of Hannibal and dragging out the franchise into a pitiful, saddening death, he took it upon himself to tear down his greatest creation quickly, before it was bled.
I just came across your reviews a couple of days ago and have been binge watching them. I really like the way you clearly do your research and make me find new appreciation for some of my favorite movies! Not this pos movie tho lol I can't watch any Hannibal movie that doesn't have Anthony Hopkins in it. Tho I may give the show a watch one day :)
I'm not really a huge Hannibal fan, but I have a very important question. Why does this exist? Seriously, why give someone like Hannibal Lecter a origin story? One of the best parts about this character(in my opinion) is that he is surrounded in mystery, thats what makes him so interesting. We don't need to know how he became who he is, whether it was since birth or a tragic event. We shouldn't be able to know, so that the mystery is still kept around that character.
Devin Lavoie agreed, its like if someone made a Spider-Man movie with none of the responsibilities spiderman has to deal with, it ruins the character and it ruins the whole point of the character.
This case is particularly bad trough because actually the origin of Hannibal Lecter was already touched on in the last few chapters of the novel Hannibal, establishing the character of Misha, what happened to her and the Nazi thing was all already in the previous novel. But because Dino de Laurentis wanted a new movie, and a prequel Forcing Harris to extend on that completely needlessly
Devin Lavoie his back story was explained in the books in even more detail. You know exactly who he is if you’ve read the series. You know him intimately, that’s a major part of the book.
This film is what started my need to approach all sequels/prequels/etc/ with an "I may be watching fanfiction" attitude. Dear god, it's got me through some tough films~ If only I'd thought of it sooner, I'd have saved myself a lot of hurt with this film~

Lady Marisake is plausibly hardcore based on her background/upbringing/culture so her reaction is plausible to me on the head but HL being full on demented now would make anyone run or not trust what may come next in the relationship
It really was the case that they undermined the sheer essence of what made Hannibal such a terrifying villian in the first place. First...Hannibal was apparently supposed to be a genius of savant level status. A genius of that caliber would have been reasonably much more self aware at an early age. Part of what made him so evil was that he had an intelligence level that reasonably could have given him any life of his choosing...but the monster he actually was used that intelligence as a weapon taken directly out of his twisted toolbox in order to fulfill his psychotic lust for total control and ultimately full possession of his victims...which in his mind was literally eating them. So Hollywood thinks its best to make Hannibals behavior justified because: Evil Nazis and Communists. What a bunch of lazy bullshit. Then they justified the cannibalism by the soldiers because they were stuck and hungry. If you wanted to show them as truly terrifying...how about just the cannibalism even amidst other options and no desperation for survival? Again...lazy bullshit at the highest levels. Then...Hollywood truly furthers thier lazy bullshit with the whole notion that Hannibal is some bully hunter which completely underminds his terrifying persona...because another feature of his terrifying character was that he was a psychologist...and innocent people in a state of total vulnerability sought him out for help...literally walking themselves into the lions den...and he put himself in that position using his intelligence in order to carry out his sadistic fantasies. His character was literally the epitome of Bully taken to the next level and beyond. Hollywood just cant help itself minute after minute...because again...in lazy fashion...the racist and shovenistic butcher character shows up...disrespecting the female protagonist...and Hannibal white knights the situation...because apparently she forgot how to fight momentarily...and also...in a gigantic undermining...the whole idea implies that a psychopath at the level of Lecter had the capacity to bond with anybody. The scene would have been much more effective had she beat the guy nearly to death...but we only see the first actual hit...and then the shot tightens up on Lecter just watching...the action shown by the shadows on his face...the shot starts tightening...one to two visible drops of blood land..but hes in a trance like state...highly excited by what hes taking in...then he comes out of it and realizes he should hide his level of excitement because hes not reacting in a socially acceptable way. One customer noticed how he reacted and locks eyes with Hannibal. Then later on in the movie there is a subtle reference to one of his victims being the customer that noticed his reaction. I could go on and on as to how much I think this screen play was written by a twelve year old history buff with a mad cartoon addiction. I was interested in seeing a compelling back story for this monumental villian...but the only cannibal I saw was the original author devouring his creation. Lame.
im curious to know what you think of the tv series hannibal. mostly concerning his ''feelings' blindness, loneliness, love, camaraderie concerning will. i feel there was a world of undermining hannibals character to order to make that soap opera work.
I thought Gaspard Ulliel did a fine job considering what he was given. It looks like he really tried to capture the essence of the character and mimic Anthony Hopkins' performance while making the role his own. It's just a shame he was given such crap material to work with.
In the movie Hannibal when the French detective is looking at Hannibal’s profile on the Top Most Wanted Fugitives you can see in the right side of the screen that his place of birth was Lithuania
its was a patreon donator goal that would review the entire series if we reached a certain amount, that goal was reached a few weeks ago, my most recent videos go into detail all about it
That thing with the katana making that noise is called "audible sharpness". it's a sound effect meant to covey how sharp the knife, sword, or blade is. The problem with that is that it's used all the time in everything and it occurs even when it makes no sense. A dagger in a leather sheath shouldn't make much of a noise when drawn, much less a "zzing!" sound. Sometimes a film will use it when the blade is merely held aloft, which shouldn't make any sound at all. Once you notice it, you hear it everywhere.
Personally I liked this film but you’re right about certain attention to details that drives me nuts, the katana for instant. I know they were going for a dramatic effect but they could’ve chose a different way to do it.
I've always thought that, in this story, Hannibal should've been chained up and left to die with his sister already dead chained to him, and then, consciously, he'd eat his sister, giving him real pathos.
I believe they said it best in Scream. I am paraphrasing here by the way. Hannibal Lecter is scary because he doesn't have a backstory he's just a rich guy that likes to eat people. Once again that makes him far more terrifying cuz he has every advantage and he has absolutely no reason to be a psychopath and yet he loves to eat human body parts. This movie does detract from the head of a series however I do enjoy it it's kind of a guilty pleasure.
Hannibal Lecter is Lithuanian but the list the man he shows his passport to lists him as French. Odd? Or because Grutas mistook him as French? Ugh, I'm confused.
The problem is Hannibal Lecter is the consequence of both external _and_ internal factors. Yet, the film acts like the traumatic incident was the trigger for his psychological profile when much of the raw ingredients were there in him from the beginning. The loss and subsequent eating of his sister just pushed it in a specific direction. It would have far more interesting to explore his personality, all the aspects of him that we can identify as human like his love of classical music, or an exploration of those internal elements like his keen intelligence and learning abilities that give him an advantage, all of which would make the audience question what may have become of Hannibal had fate not interfered. It could have been a better narrative to explore the character through introspection rather than just through the process of him hunting down Nazis.
really don’t see your point, if you break it down everyone will have parts from all over the world, I can guarantee you if you were to ask him, Hopkins would says he’s welsh, He’s also agnostic.
6:27 - 6:32 That goes through my head everyday for the last few months. It's as if I lived a good life to the point where I forgot the lies of any justice system.
Honestly, I think people like you and I will just need to accept that outside of actual documentaries ( and probably, even within several of them) that "Schting" noise made when people interact with swords will always be there. It has fallen squarely into "Coconut Effect" territory by this point, I'm afraid
well to be honest there's acceptable levels of it, for example kill bill does it a lot but its not egregious and actually you don't notice it unless you're really hearing for it, I mention it in this film, mainly because it sounds like an angle grinder that's where I draw the line.
I know Harris wrote about Hannibal's childhood in the book Hannibal. About the baby teeth found int he cesspool, his trauma from the soldiers, etc. But this whole movie plays like one very long fan fic. Pure fan service, no substance.
Sorry about that, that shouldn't be where an ad plays i only allow them at the start and the very end, so ill try and make sure that doesn't happen again.
Hanibal Lector never had a british accent .He always gave a very american accent. Specially during Silence of the Lambs. In the movie hannibal 1 he had a very "american posh" accent.
Well, if you are so particular about Japanese weaponry... The knife that Lector uses is probably not a tanto - that is just that - a knife. It seems to be a wakijasi - a short sword, that full-fledged samurai could carry with a daito - a real katana. And how you managed to find a guy to translate your subtitles to Russian?
@@deusdeaconReviews well hopefully those changes would’ve actually benefited the movie, I especially think the castle element is a bit stupid, I’m also not sure that Nazis made the movie better, they’re universally known as bad, so it’s not like they have any depth other than “Wannabe Nazi”
Well actually at the time of making these videos, I used recipes that were put on janice poons blog, she was the food stylist on hannibal, and she would blow about the show and the recipes used, Now that blog has been made into a recipe book called feeding hannibal, I own it and highly recommend it.
Nothing even feels properly connected in this, bad stuff happens to him in WW2 and he's told he was fed his sister so he decides to start eating people? After a murder rampage as a action hero instead of using any of the smarts he was known for in the previous films. This isn't even Hannibal in this, it's more like the super villian version of him DC wanted to make but thought "nah it wouldn't be as good as the films we normally make"
My question is this. How the hell did he ever get a medical license in the states? I mean he was a wanted criminal in France at the end of the movie. I know he is assumed dead but you would think that a simple background search would have turned up his identity in the states
Well in the book at least its explained that there wasn't enough corroborating evidence for a trail and after getting recommendations from a renowned and the head of the Police Forensic Laboratory he was released, no idea why they didn't just do what the book did cause it makes so much more sense
This movie wasn't great but at least its kind of fun which I think it was all they where going for, no real effort seemed to be put into the story, it was all around the hype on who this kid becomes which idk it seems like a forced transition like something else would need to motivate him to becoming the Silence of the lambs character. I do agree the it was sad to see the series go but honestly the writing went down hill pretty quick, I lost interest at the totem poll corps display episode which was right after the Violin episode (my personal favorite). The killers got boring in how they acted and how they killed, with few exceptions. Will and the others shouldn't have even suspected Hannibal but they where on to him so fast, it just weakened the character to me, same with Will going off the deep end but thats just my opinion, it had good bones but they couldn't support the series for me. glad someone enjoyed it at least.
they are kidneys not liver, and chianti doesn't pair well with offal, in the book lecter say amarone instead of chianti, because Harris knows his wines and the film changed it.
I mean, there IS a nazi character who's a bit likable, as hard as that is to say, Stroheim from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a nazi who's a slight protagonist without flat out changing sides.
I have a confession: *_Hannibal Rising_* was the very first film I had watched from beginning to end, that introduced me to the character of Hannibal Lector and the film series, and I had saw this in the cinema with my Pops when I was 13. Even then, I did not think too much of it, was only intrigued by the revenge story. And yea, that bit with Hannibal wearing the muffler, is only in *_ONE_* short scene, yet justifies putting it on the posters and DVD covers and to "pay homage" to Hannibal's muffler in the previous films. A completely unnecessary prequel for a character that honestly did not really require one, the same could be said for Michael Myers and Han Solo.
I agree that the film may indeed not be perfect, but can we agree that it's possibly better than Hannibal? I think so anyway. We all know Lecter is a cannibal, but do we really need see him preform the act. Not seeing him eat people helps me see him maintain his elegance, and sophistication which is why I think Hannibal: Rising takes 3rd place out the four films .
I feel like your intros are more inspired from the tv show I mean, Lecter isn't a particularly British name... but that's all I got You think this was Harris just giving a big middle finger to Dino De Laurentiis? Like, 'fine I'll do it but I'm going to make sure you regret it'. No one likes the movie, the story is sloppy and offensive, the actors...... are doing their best with what they were given, and it retcons the original trilogy in the worst way possible. I'm sure Harris was quite capable of creating a better story but it seems evident that he didn't want to. Thank God Hugh didn't get cast, have you seen him in Ella Enchanted or Blood and Chocolate? I would have cried if I saw him in one more bad adaptation.
The intro are (as best to my ability) shot for shot re-creations of the shows cooking scenes, and yeah that’s a possibility, however I also found Hannibal the book that is to be pretty bad as well so the theory doesn’t hold water for me
RIP Gaspard, gone too soon 😞

Nothing even feels properly connected in this, bad stuff happens to him in WW2 and he's told he was fed his sister so he decides to start eating people? After a murder rampage as a action hero instead of using any of the smarts he was known for in the previous films.
This isn't even Hannibal in this, it's more like the super villian version of him DC wanted to make but thought "nah it wouldn't be as good as the films we normally make"
10:23 it’s like it has a built in sharper.
Which isn’t good for any curved Japanese sword
It's a stereotype of any sword pulled from any scabbard or even worse, full leather sheathes.
It's the cocking the gun or racking for edged weapons.
For those who don't know, Gaspard Ulliel died in 2022 after colliding with a LITHUANIAN skier in France.
It would have been so much better is it showed how he learned to use his intelligence to manipulate people around him ... it just gave us blood
@@deusdeaconReviews I agree. Sorry that was always a point about the film that bugged me to no end lol just the way my mind works I guess
he wasn't a villain, he was an antihero
You stated that Hannibal cut the main bad guys "hamstrings", But that is incorrect, he cut the "Achilles Tendens"
yup my bad
At the razzies it was nominated for:
Worst excuse for a horror movie
Worst prequel or sequel
Geez this man has remarkable cooking skills!
is the TV show really cancelled? I know this is an old video but did they decide not to? I really hope they changed their minds.
yeah it for definite got cancelled.
what were they smoking to think that was a good idea?
I picked a good person to play that dude's apartment he just looks f****** creepy and scary
are you open to suggestions for reviews or do you have a schedule
Was that a real katana
That would really depend on what you mean by "real", it is an authentically japanese made sword.
Ya, that whole, "You do not honor the pecking order" line is one of the worst I've ever heard. Was the Cold War still on when this was made??
To be fair, if my aunt looked like her, I'd kiss her too. No shame.
Li Gong is gorgeous.
I thought this was a silly movie. This was the origin story of Hannibal the superhero. Gong Li was hot though.
just came across this channel enjoying the reviews..but near the end hannibal slices the Achilles tendon not the hamstrings..
0:10 way more onions and a chianti
they are kidneys not liver, and chianti doesn't pair well with offal, in the book lecter say amarone instead of chianti, because Harris knows his wines and the film changed it.
That cooking scene makes me so hungry
eh, they should have personalities, but i wouldn't say People Trying Really Hard To Be Nazis could possibly be written to have any redeeming qualities
I mean, there IS a nazi character who's a bit likable, as hard as that is to say, Stroheim from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a nazi who's a slight protagonist without flat out changing sides.
The German border was quite easy because of freedom of movement between west east Berlin before krushev became leader
I would only eat that meal with a gun to my head. Then I'd still vomit.
John Cena as a detective? Priceless 😂
Who does the song for the opening title
I think you mean Look At Me by Die! She Said, every other song is from the Hannibal rising soundtrack if you meant one of those.
Deusdaecon Reviews I ment the look at me song but thank you, btw I like your house on haunted hill and ghost ship reviews and although the film
Ghost ship had its flaws I still enjoyed it as a whole.. I dig your stuff tho man honestly
I fell asleep during this movie and have made no attempt to watch it since. That was back in the late 2000s.
Hate this film.
Totally stupid and messes up the origin of Hannibal
I agree that the film may indeed not be perfect, but can we agree that it's possibly better than Hannibal? I think so anyway. We all know Lecter is a cannibal, but do we really need see him preform the act. Not seeing him eat people helps me see him maintain his elegance, and sophistication which is why I think Hannibal: Rising takes 3rd place out the four films .
vitamin
I thought you were big on science, my dude.. Hannibal clearly cut old dude's Achilles tendons, nit hamstrings at *24:54*
not *
Castiel sword what the FUCK this is like a bad superhero back story film
You got really irritated reviewing this movie? It really shines through this video.
why why why
Dude..... waaaaay fucking better critiques than FoundFilx or whatever his name is. How the fuck are you not at millions of subs!?
I don't know who foundflix are but thank you very much I really appreciate that
I want to come eat at your house
Im glad you enjoy the cooking, and aren't put off by the offal.
how would you rate every single film in the Lecter series (out of ten)
Katana wielding Hannibal Lecter. Was this a fucking fan fiction?
Hannibal is a ww2 survivor. Whaaaaaaaaaaa? I mean I guess that might make sense in the novel
I don’t have a problem with that. I just never never thought he was old enough to be alive during ww2
I feel like your intros are more inspired from the tv show
I mean, Lecter isn't a particularly British name... but that's all I got
You think this was Harris just giving a big middle finger to Dino De Laurentiis? Like, 'fine I'll do it but I'm going to make sure you regret it'. No one likes the movie, the story is sloppy and offensive, the actors...... are doing their best with what they were given, and it retcons the original trilogy in the worst way possible. I'm sure Harris was quite capable of creating a better story but it seems evident that he didn't want to.
Thank God Hugh didn't get cast, have you seen him in Ella Enchanted or Blood and Chocolate? I would have cried if I saw him in one more bad adaptation.
The intro are (as best to my ability) shot for shot re-creations of the shows cooking scenes, and yeah that’s a possibility, however I also found Hannibal the book that is to be pretty bad as well so the theory doesn’t hold water for me
@@deusdeaconReviews I haven't read the book so I don't have a personal opinion yet
Most networks don’t know quality when they see it
