When it comes to Audio production, mixing is so critical. But even after the mixing process there's one more step that can truly bring your audio to the next level of quality. Mastering. Mastering is the process of essentially throwing effects on the whole mix. So, a compressor in mastering would compress everything, instead of an individual track.
This brings a different color and feel to the overall mix of your audio. And yes this is critical with music, but more uncommon with video audio. I would argue that your video mix will stand out if you take some intentional time to master your video mix. Compression, EQ, and Limiting will do the trick and truly be a light shining for the AudioGospel. Go forth and master my friends.
If you're already in Audition, the important stuff starts at 5:10.
Just finally switched to Audition after doing all my previous film audio in Logic. Great tutorial - really straightforward.
I've been teaching myself audio production for the past 3 or 4 years but mastering has always been an elusive concept to me. I'm about a minute and 20 seconds in and you've just made me understand exactly what mastering is. Kudos, my man
I love that so much!
Great job Oliver! It really looks like you're taking your videos seriously! This was a great video and it will definitely be in my playlist to watch when I'm mixing audio! Keep up the good work! I hope your channel grows as much as you want it to.
So much yes! A great, straight-forward thorough and tidy tutorial on mastering, Audition is my primary audio work horse in my job so tips that can take production to the next level are very exciting. I'll share this video with my team. Thanks again.
Amazing tutorial! So simple but rich and in-depth. God bless you, man!
Just starting out as a freelance editor during the COVID-19 crisis, and found this super helpful. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
@@OliverJHughes have you ever find the "Mixer panel" because i heard that you said ition has No Mixer window, if not i will be glad to help champ and thanks for the tutorial too ... it's good to know that you share a process with another creative head, and by the way during exportation you direct export to STEREO or STEMS directly back to the same PREMIERE SEQUENCE and it will ask you if you want to CREATE a new audio Track then all you have to do is to MUTE all other ORIGINAL TRACKS and your good to go.
again, thank you for sharing champ.
HOW HELPFUL IT WAS!!! It cleared many many ideas I had regarding composing audio and video and had no a vague idea on the order you put it together.. thank you very much!!!
Thank you so much for this Oliver! I have been searching for a good master mix technique
Thanks this helped a lot, I took an audio production class 2 years ago, but this was a great refresh. Good quality content
Literally the first one of these tutorials I've come accross that actually SOUNDS GOOD. Lol. Thanks for the help man!!,
🙏🏻
The best looking video i have ever seen!!!!Amazing video and audio.
This is good stuff! I'm working on getting better at the small touches of editing and mixing my church's online gatherings. Lots of pieces to put together and trying to make it all sound good.
Yet another informative video, Oliver!
Coincidentally I was playing around with mastering the other day. I was going overboard with the effects on the individual tracks and they all drowned each other out at points, this will help with that.
Thank you for this, always love your work.
Yeah man! Mastering changed a lot for me both musically and with video when I learned it. Appreciate you.
Thanks for this Oliver. Much appreciated. I enjoy your energy and clarity.
Just got done watching the video, liked. It answered a question I had about mix down on master tracks thank you.
This was exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Thank you for the very useful tutorial >> and I noticed your editing window set up looks very useful as well, so I think I will adopt that layout//... cheers!!
good vid. helped me get a more general idea of how audition wrks
I love you man, thanks.
Perfect tutorial for a smaller project that I basically can mix myself instead of going for the sound studio.
Dope!
Very informative video. Syncs up pretty much with how I mix and master audio for video. However, I'm always looking for extra tips to improve my workflow and definitely picked up a couple.
Really helpful tutorial buddy! This will surely level up my UA-cam videos!
Dude, thank you. Thank you. Thank you...
This video was excellent. Like you said in the beginning, audio is sort of that "mythical" beast that you eventually encounter when trying your hand at being a video producer/filmmaker/whatever-er, and in so many ways, audio can make or break the end result. Having this knowledge has made my videos so much better.
Pumped to hear this, thanks for watching, brother!
I have been wondering how to master audio mixdown. Thank you so much! i will try this for my next cover songs🙏🏻
*I'm very helpful of your video so Thank you so much!*
Thanks for sharing..!
Your video really help my project workflow
I can definitely appreciate the simple mixing, however alluding to more advanced options would be a good avenue for creating additional content and provide a basis for the advancement.
Really appreciate this! Thank you so much!
Great tutorial. The video you were using looks great too. Thanks.
Barnabas, you bless me
Love the Video Bro! I'm always looking to make my audio better for my videos, I'll be chacking out your channel for tips for now on.
Thank you mr. Am gland to learn more about adobe audition.
Thanks, you just saved my short film :')
It's 2022 and this video is still relevant. I hope more people will find this tutorial
This was great! Thank you!
Amazing video, simple and usefull, thanks!
2:51 - it's much quicker to just right click your sequence tab > Reveal in project (this automatically takes you to the sequence file in your bin window so you don't have to hunt around for it)
Thank you for making this video! 💖
Great video presence bro. Keep it up. And thanks for the video.
Just now I figured out the difference between mastering and mixing, thanks to you.
I’m pumped to hear that!
really helpful video, keep doing the great work !
Great and useful. Thank you!
🥰 Great, thanks, understanding the mastering better!
Adobe Audition does have a mix window. It's right next to "editor" you just have to click to it.
This was a big helps, thanks
Simple and effective. Thank you
Very Helpful! Thank you SOOOOOO much. This video is fantastic!! God bless you, brother!
Yay!! Thanks for sharing!
Oliver, thanks you, thank you very much. Once finished to mount all my tracks, result sound not good whatever all the effort I made. Once I followed your tutorial, the song sound much pleasant to hear. Huge difference indeed which encourage me to continue on my family project making music video with the kids. Merci

Appreciate you so much!!
Woow.... Marana Mass
Very informative. Thank you! I'm torn between the punchiness of your custom Hard Limiter setting for UA-cam or just using the "Limit to -6db" preset to play it safe
this is new to me, I need to learn this
love it. Keep it up!
Thanks man, really appreciate it!
Very interesting information. Would also love to know the why's behind each of those options. I've just recently started working on my audio in my videos and use a couple of the tricks you showed here. Just wondering why you don't use the "send to premiere Pro" option to automatically drop it back into your timeline?
Loving your video by the way! Very informative. So glad I came across your channel.
You are amazing thanks
You really opened a new door in my music production; my music has never sounded so rich! Thanks! Do you know of any videos that specifically talk about exactly what you covered here in terms of music Mixing? What to do with the master track before mixing down music tracks. Probably similar?
Great Video! I Mastered a song off your approach! Sounds great!
Thank you &LOVE
Thank man, really helpful...
Thanks!good job!👍
🤙🏻
Great Oliver thanks for the video
in the effects rack there is Special --> mastering parameter .. what do you think about it ?? is it a shortcut to do something close to what you did in the video or it's not professional enough ?
Cheers Oliver... Thanks for a useful tutorial...
Thanks so much 🙏🏻
thanks this is cool
Very helpfull! Thank you :)
Radtastic! Thank you for this =]
Thank you so much what you said made this missing electric signal ignite
Solved car mix problem

Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Hey thanks for this!
🙏🏻
Thank you for this tutorial Oliver! I hope to one day be able to produce music for many musicians!
Love it! I hope you get to do that too!
@@OliverJHughes Absolutely!
Thanks for the help! i will definitely sub and click the bell
I need to learn so much more with audio, I am glad you're showing these tricks off. Even though I got the point of this video I had no why you were doing the little tweaks that you were doing. This isn't a negative remark! I think maybe you could take some more time explaining why it is you do each step, what you are looking for, and why/how it is you choose what feature you do. OR... can you possibly point me to a video where you do this already.
Love what your doing, keep up the good work, you're definitely the audio rockstar!
Definitley, SnailTrail. I could probably do a more in-depth mastering tutorial instead of such an overview! Appreciate you.
Oliver J Hughes -- thought you were on break 😛
Well, umm, trying to break from making tutorials, still here to chat!!
By the way I drove a 2000 4runner SR5 for 10 years, now I drive a TRD Sport 2015 Tacoma. Love Toyota Trucks.

Very helpful, thanks
Thank YOU!
Greatness!!
you COULD have a mixer/slider for each track if u wanted in audition. its in the tabs, just drag it where u want afterwards.
Adobe audition does have a mixer window. Go to WINDOW - MIXER. I usually assign the mixer to my second screen.
Awesome tutorial! Wondering, at the end when you deleted out all your audio to replace with the master track, would it be just as effective if you added a track for the master and then just set it to solo? I get paranoid. What happens if the client comes back with a revision request? Would you just pull up a previous version of the project?
Yes, that would work fine. The only reason I delete and replace is just my own mental security that NOTHING can get out of place lol! I’ve had weird sync issues on projects where I’ve accidentally moved audio.
So that’s why I duplicate the sequence in its final state so I’ve got each audio track and clip totally preserved if there’s changes!
very informative Video
I love your way
Great video! Was wondering why you threw on two compressors though? What's the second one doing that the first one isn't?
Great question-my theory goes like this: when using audio tools less is more, so when you need more, use multiple tools a little at a time. I think my signal sounds better with a few mild compressors versus one harder compressor.
Great video. But I got a question. I'm a bit of a beginner and usually use aftereffects to put final touches on video... Should I be using premier instead? Is AE more for motion graphics creation where Premier is for editing? If so let me know, I never really new there was a difference. Second question is, I'm recording video in OBS ... should I not? Is there a better option, and I'm assuming I should be recording desktop audio, spoken word, and camera noise as separate tracks so I can clean them all up separately before mastering it. Sorry if these are dumb questions. I'm just starting to get more into video production and have invested in the equipment I need to look and sound good, but would like to know how to up my game software wise/plugin wise to really look/sound professional.
Great tutorial! Very helpful. Any tips on audio for live art streams? Specifically IG Live? I started using Yellow Duck to stream to IG through OBS. I have a simple Yeti blue plugged into an iMac.
Hi, Can I ask why you put two compressors on your master?
Does this achieve something different to just adding more compression to just one compressor?
Beginner here so I'm really interested to know.
Thanks, awesome videos by the way.
wow, thanks for this, will have to give it a try in my next project.
I've been debating between the Sony WH-1000x M2 and the Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Wireless Headphones. Have you used the Bose at all? What are your thoughts?
It’s my opinion that the Bose sound a bit more natural, Sony sounds great though, and you can manipulate it’s EQ to remove the artificial bass boost.
Sony destroys the Bose in feel/design/function and the noise cancellation is probably equal.
I went with the Sony!
Great video how-to. Question: I see that the mastering causes a good deal of the audio to go into the red zone. Does that matter? Won't that cause clipping and distortion?
Nice Sir
Make a video how to craft a song with a guitar in Adobe Audition
I just worked on all the audio for a short, but the director had originally put all the actors mixed on different tracks, Im guessing it would be easier to move it all int audition, and then put the actors on their own tracks?
If I compress one of the tracks with 2 different actors, woman and a man, I am guessing it will not process each of them properly on a same track. Can I safely lock tracks to grid some I can move actors onto their respective tracks? inI was a protools user with a sound degree and certification on PT, but I am pretty new to using Audition, but very excited! We are putting out great short films here in Roswell N.M. Got our film showing at Roswell Film Fest tomorrow!
Thanks again for your help!
Gosh I don't know how I missed this comment!! Sorry about that - yeah you should definitely get each actor (even each mic, or scene) on it's own track in Audition, or whatever DAW you're using. Just be careful with the sync when you're shuffling things around. I'm not sure about a sync lock when moving clips between tracks - I will look into that. Hope the film fest went great!
Love you
Love YOU
i wish u can show us how to mix music with vo i mean not just playing with the volume level in music session something like compression or idk
Hey Oliver, Thanks for the video. I'm curious why you would round trip to audition now that all the stock effects can now be accessed in Premiere. Why not just apply the same effects to the master track within Premiere? Thanks again dude! Keep it up
Only to use Audition - which arguably has a better summing engine than Premiere. But the reality is I use Premiere to master A LOT.
Audition does have a mixer. It is in the "Mixer" tab on your screen.
WOW
THERE ISSSS A MIX WINDOW WITH FADERS AND BUSES, EFFECTS RACK ETC... Click WINDOW> MIXER...
great tutorial all around though. lots of detail and great explanation
if I was making a UA-cam vid and I wanted to show equaliser which doesn't cover the background pic and have it move , can any of that be done with adobe equipment?
