Thank you lots of great info I was not aware of the rugged maps, I was considering a CarPlay system for motorcycles now may look at a rugged cell. I already use Google offline maps but did learn a little from your video, Also was about to get a Tusk tank bag but now will hold off and see what else is out there as I live in a very hot humid area.

    Great tutorial John!
Funny how we utilize a lot of the same methods. I do use a Garmin though, 396lmt-s,($245) and I do create all my routes/maps from a combo of Gaia and Google. They are transferable into my garmin, just kinda tricky to do. If the new rugged phone doesn't work out, garmins are a option.
One thing I also do, which may end your running into gated roads(private property), is I also compare all my routes/maps from the state I'm creating in to the state planning map. Texas in my case. It shows me the all the public state roads. That google blue line will take you through private property all the time, and this helps prevent that.

This was a very useful tutorial Jon. I will consider getting a rugged phone now. Thanks for sharing.

You can never, ever do that again. Those banana's were driving my stomach crazy! :)
Thank you for the detailed explanation of off-line maps. I don't think I have ever seen anyone do it so well. I thank you.
I would have never thought of rugged cell phones for off-line use. I have always struggled with using my garmin gps. I always used a sandwich bag with a rubber band and it worked long enough to get to a safe place. I only lost one garmin because I was squeezed between two trucks on a bridge and couldn't get off soon enough.
Yea... I can't afford a zumo. I also can't live without google maps.
You have found me the perfect tool to use! I have saved the same model you have on amazon wish list.

I also bought the same phone as you and looking forward to using it on my new bike.
Thank you for being so thorough and slow enough so I could follow. I hate it when someone is demonstration on a new device and they are so fast I have to stop and rewind for every action.
      Great vid and much appreciated.

Thanks for the nice tutorial on using offline Google maps. I will definitely start using this method now that I am riding more in areas with marginal cellular service.

I just strapped a large Tusk tank bag on my new KTM. I have ridden in the rain several times and experienced the same fogging that you mentioned. I haven’t ridden in the sun and heat yet but can well imagine it will get hot inside the bag (my Snickers bars will melt)! Maybe Tusk should put some air vents with waterproof zippers?
Great idea on the offline maps on a indestructible cell phone! I will be on that this week!

Jon , thanks for showing me how to download and use offline maps.Last November I purchased a Zumo Xt as a 60th bday present to myself. Like you, I am not one to waste money. Black Friday the units went on sale for $400. I signed up for a Amazon card and saved 50%. So I got the Zumo for $200. Sometimes it is easier to just use Google maps, on my phone.
Thanks for the video, Rich in Pennsylvania 👍
PS, the bananas make a great phone stand!

Great info. Show us the app you use to route your custom routes with Google offline maps. This truly a great alternative to a GPS.

Good to hear from you sir, glad you liked the video. I use the GPS Waypoint Navigator app from the Google play store to map my own trails but there are hundreds of apps to choose from. Thanks for watching and keep safe out there... :)

My problem was the phone would overheat in that clear case especially if it was playing music or running navigation

Some advice for those that may try this with an old cell phone. Make sure you update google maps. I tried this with my out of service old Kyocera Duraforce and it was a disaster. Re-route didn't work. It froze several times and was super slow and generally unreliable. I then went to the google app store and when I selected maps it indicated I needed an update. Did the update and the Kyocera worked fine. I also went ahead and purchased an Oukitel to get a little more memory. Seems to be working fine. Thanks for the tip!

Those tank bags have a rain cover with a clear top to prevent that issue. Although the clear window is meant for maps and none of them work well for phones as the overheating problem you found. I just use a zumo xt and switch between bikes. I used a phone for years but the zumo xt is so much easier to see and use while riding. And, you can make all your own maps with it as well.

Hi John I don’t really recommend biking accessories but yesterday I had to take my Tiger 800 for a warranty job in a city. Well it rained like never before and as I’d just bought a quad lock bar bracket and case and cover for my hand me down iPhone 11. I didn’t need it to nav I just thought I would see how it coped in this down pour. Well it was ok I could see the screen the rain wind blown streamed off the whole way there and back home no probs whatsoever.

I don't know where you would by a Garmin but I just purchased a Garmen Zumo 396LMT-S complete with Bluetooth for voice directions, lifetime maps, designed for a motorcycle for $250.

Thank you for the great informative video. I also prefer to run offroad maps but like to use Guru maps for following tracks on my iPhone. I do envy the screen brightness on the Zumo XT's I've seen though. Is the screen brightness on your rugged smartphone any better or about the same as your typical smartphone? Thanks!

Sorry if I ask a stupid question, but here it goes, "do you all know that this tank bag can't be used under the rain with out the rain cover do you"?

Do the off-line maps track your location and give you turn-by-turn navigation without a cell phone connection?

    • @ozarksbackroads5484
      @ozarksbackroads5484  Рік тому +2

Hello there sir, good to hear from you. Yes when using off line navigation every things works the same as if using online navigation but you won't get the live information such as backups ahead or speed traps ahead so you won't get re-routed around accidents or traffic backups like you do with the live maps. Other than that it works exactly the same.... Thanks for watching.... keep safe out there... :)
