  • Make a plywood boat with one sheet of plywood. Easy to make, this boat is a good starter project to learn about wooden boat building. More plywood Boat videos: goo.gl/xUVw4N Subscribe Here: goo.gl/3zM702
You can make this boat from one sheet of plywood, but if you have a spare piece of scrap plywood 1' x 2', you can make the boat longer. I'm going to build more plywood boats from one, two, or three sheets of plywood, subscribe to get our DIY videos.

If you angle the sides outward a bit, (about 15-20 degrees) it creates what is called reserve buoyancy, which slows the tipping or rolling effect and helps to steady the craft.
Also if you want it to last a few years then use exterior or marine plywood, and a marine caulking called "5200" (its truly waterproof, and creates a permanent bond).

Nice! I was thinking of making Two of these and hooking them together. Kind of like an out-rigger. And then you can have two people. Also I was thinking of making one just slightly smaller so it will fit inside the other one for transport in the back of my truck. Have some easy clamp system (or something) to hook them together in the water. Yes... going to try this. haha

I can't believe I actually made a boat that floats haha. I got one of those electric little boat motors for it too, I was just missing a proper seat but I just put a backrest inbetween the part where I'm sitting and the motor, I was afraid if I got an actual seat the center of gravity would be too high but it's fine :) I just did this for fun and never expected it to float lol

The clear silicone is stronger, any coloured silicone has pigment added and this weakens it by as much as 50% if I can remember, little yellow house guy used clear but did not mention this.
Timber max express I have tested wet as well as dry and found it superior to guerilla glue.
    I hope this helps someone.
Always good to see practical people, enjoyed your vid dude.

I just built one of these this weekend with my daughters. It was a fun project to be sure, but the boat was definitely a bit wobbly in the water. Maybe my size had something to do with it: I'm 6' and 240 lbs. and until I got my bearings it rocked violently from side to side. I'd recommend a second sheet of plywood and make the bottom 3' wide. I think it would provide a little bit more stability.
Still it kept me afloat and didn't leak. I made a few changes though: I used waterproof Gorilla Glue instead of silicone caulk but also painted all the joints (and the entire bottom of the boat) with asphalt cement. A gallon was $11 and I figured if it was good enough to stop roof leaks it ought to keep the boat leak-free. Seems to have worked. Then I painted the entire boat with 3 coats of paint.
I also added trim and two seats, all of which apparently greatly increased the weight of this boat. Hmmm. Now that I think of it, maybe it was the seats -- and not my size weight -- that raised my center of gravity and made the whole thing wobbly. Will have to try it kneeling like you are. But one thing's for sure, the thing ain't lightweight!
Now I just need to get a real paddle! Thanks for the fun inspiration!

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  9 років тому

GhoulishCop glad you built it, but yes, its a bit wobbly. i sit or kneel in it. I am researching making a plywood canoe next. thanks! eric.

When I was about 12, (56 years ago) I designed and made a boat using this method. I sold my bicycle (without telling my folks) to get enough money to buy the plywood. I bought 3/8" ply which was not ideal for strength but it meant that it was light enough for me to carry the boat, (on my back, like the shell of a tortoise) to the canal near our house. I strengthened the joins with batons as you have. I made a paddle from scrap ply. I did use the boat at least once but I have no memory of what happened to it after that. I bet my folks took it away to save me from drowning! This video really reminded me of my own project, thanks!

Built one similar, one sheet Dory shape, stepped in the first time and sunk😁then I learned to get in by using the oars, made of left over 2x2s as crutches sit down and push off the beach facing the stern. It was so light and easy to row I went for miles and never swamped from other boat wakes.Sealed it with some glue my Dad had in a 5gallon bucket. Used galvanized sheet rock nails and finished the rails off by ripping a grove in a dowel. I like yours cause you don't have to bend anything 👍

I know this video is old but, I would suggest aquarium sealer. A little more expensive, but intended to make something hold water. Therefore, more likely to hold out water. Also if you made this from two sheets, using one as the bottom, it would be more stable on the water. This plan makes a nice, simple boat but, it's more like a variation of a canoe. Making it wider would be more like a flat bottom boat.

My first boat was a one sheet contraption I built when I was 16. Donated it to the local boy's club when I went in the Navy. Don't know what ever happened to it but I understand they made a boat building class out of correcting all my mistakes. Caught a whole lot of bluegill the last couple of years of high school with that little boat.

I used Gorilla Glue brand construction adhesive to join the wood and seal it. I then added a boat seat and a 30lb minn Kota motor to the transom. It moves the boat at about 5mph and still floats. I may try this project for my kids (with life jackets, of course). I guess the plywood doesn't warp? I built an outdoor container out of 2x4's and pressure treated plywood for my trash cans and had bad warping. Did not paint it - I treated it with Thompsons water seal - that didnt really help. That was my first project, about 5 years ago.

    • @gardenfork

Hi John, the plywood will degrade over time. Go look up using Titebond III glue as a wood waterproofer, you roll it on with a roller, a few coats. I will make a vid about it this spring. - Eric.

+Jon New exactly! thinking that if the plywood boat was a bit wider, it would be a lot more stable. thx! eric.

Not a bad little boat! I might just have to make one for myself! Just let the Silicone dry, and you should be alright. If it were me, I'd add a small motor, & I'd also add some type of flotation devices, one to each side of the boat, kind of like some Islanders do to their boats. It definitely helps with stability of the boat, and makes it basically impossible for the boat to either sink or capsize, or, if you will, flip over. Those types of boats are some of the safest boats in the world!

To make a bigger boat, build 2 of these as a pair of pontoons. Use marine plywood and seal the wood.

The gladesmen of the Everglades made these for hunting and trapping. They had to be lightweight so they could drag them over sawgrass and shallow water.

To paint it use an oil based enamel. High gloss. Wooden boats rot. Eventually. This will make it last... If you take it out of the water and let it dry out when you're not using it it should last 20+ years. Fiber classing lasts long but needs to be out of the sun when not in use...

Maybe use aquarium sealant for your view window, and make a frame around it to strengthen it. Add a seat about four inches below the gunwales.
