One thing I'd consider for the magnets is leaving the ones on the bottom of the board as is, but for the knife holder, drilling from the sides and sliding them in, then filling the cavity so they are hidden and have that wood buffer to manage the strength too
I would have used a piece of scrap wood to veneer over the magnets, it covers them and it will help to weaken them a little. This is something that I have used before, and have a few projects that I will be using it on.
Not sure if you did this, but I would coat the knives with some food-safe coating, to prevent splinters from getting into the hard cheeses you cut with it. Alternatively, you could slightly char the outside of the wood, to burn those splinters, and maybe to make a seal layer.

if you'd like to decrease the strength of the magnets just a little bit, put some very thin washers over the magnets, and use thin felt pads on the 4 corners of the tray to keep it level. those magnets are plenty strong enough to hold even when they're already holding metal.
true, but then you'll have washers falling around once in a while, you can actually discharge a magnet at a rate slow enough to control how "strong" you want it. i think it should work better.

Oh my gosh! Haha, great project! I was inspired by your work, you have a very clear thought process. And I appreciate you sharing that you also work full time, helps me to know it can be done. One observation about the handles in the SketchUp model. It looks like the arch forming the handles remained a bit segmented. Before you draw a circle/curve in SketchUp, you can specify and increase the number of segments to refine the smoothness of the curve. Or curious if that was a result of a different issue? Regardless, looks awesome. Thank you for putting yourself out there!
I noticed the same about the flats in the curve. Certainly something to get sorted out in future to get maximum benefit out of using a CNC in the first place. It will be pretty obvious in the CAD by the looks of it. I have never used SketchUp, your suggestion sounds on the money (or find a better software if curves cannot be smoothed out satisfactorily). Its a problem that can crop up in CAM software as well, even if the CAD line looks perfectly smooth. The setting to fix it in this case will likely be called "tolerance", in the CAM software I use it is called "Intol - Outtol" . A software specific forum could advise. Often a loose tolerance is used for roughing operations for speed of cutting and tool path calculation time. For finish cuts I'll use 0.002mm tolerance, some routers might be slowed down in feed rate when they reach a curve with a tolerance like that especially if it is a spiraling down cut. Easy fix for those magnets. Place a very thin veneer ring that gives just the slightest air gap between the two magnets, and I think you will be able to adjust the force as well as make the magnets look a bit more decorative and "factory"
Awesome project. It looks like the radiuses for the inside of the hand holds were converted to poly lines. Sometimes this happens when making complex shapes. Great build, the CNC pattern is really awesome. I was about to buy a wood wizz for flattening slabs but you're really making me think twice now and I'm genuinely thinking I may get a CNC instead. More research to do but thanks for providing videos that really illustrate the versatility of the CNC option!
I've only watched a couple of your videos, but they're enough to subscribe. Always makes me laugh when you say there are people who say you can't do woodwork because you use tools. The end product is the only thing that matters in the majority of scenarios!
Genius idea ~ l’m disabled and sometimes bed ridden ~ something like this with the cutlery underneath and an extra place for a drink would be brilliant!!
Very cool project. If doing something similar with "wood" bladed knives, are you familiar with the transparent wook affect? IIRC, it's basically infusing the wood structure with epoxy to give a semi-transparent affect - the epoxy would give a nice boost to the strength of the finer cutting edge.
Loved this video, actually watched it first time a few weeks ago it's just a really skilful thoughtful use of the tools and materials available so today I watched it again for the great use of currently available new tools like the CNC. If we stuck to only traditional tools and materials we'd still be using knapped stone knives to scrape skins for clothes. My father was a bit dubious when I got a circular saw and plunge router but after he used them a few times agreed that they made it possible to do stuff the old hand saw and chisels could only do with difficulty. Needless to say he got power tools for the next two Christmases . . .
I have to ask how long did the carve take you, I couldn't imagine it took that long being that you didn't go that deep. I love the cutout around the handles and filling with resin, that was some awesome on the fly thinking!!
"o my gosh" this was the first video I saw, and I subbed immediately!!! 499K, so you are almost there!!! This is gorgeous. My dad and Uncles were all experts with wood and made amazing things like this. :-)

That was amazing! I'm not sure how comfortable I feel about wooden knife blades, but they look nice!
Oh my gosh! 😊
This blew my mind!! Very thoughtful and creatively crafted. Katie is a very lucky person to be the recipient of such beautiful (and functional) gifts 🥲
You got a like and sub from this first time viewer!
Loved the recut I would not have been that brave!
Beautiful piece! Congratulations to her for such a quality gift! You did a great job and have earned my subscription. Can't wait to check out your future content.
The Holy Trinity of woodworking..."the joiner, the planer and the table saw...Amen"
Great work, Jonny! 🥰
yup, a thoughtful gift that shows your wife which place she holds in your heart!
(for the slow ones: the kitchen)
How people go thru life without a creative outlet baffles me. I need to sew and craft for my sanity. Those of us with useful hobbies are twice blessed!
I thought it was concrete with an impressed pattern until you said otherwise. Your wife is lucky. Made with love, just for her.
My golly, you're handy!
Make that "oh my gosh"! It's perfect. And beautiful. The knives are stunning!
I too have been in the well I have 4 days to complete 6 days of work before Christmas conundrum before, I can feel this video.
A man of sheer determination, he clearly wanted that cheese for christmas
Omg with the right tools and creativity, the sky's the limit! Quite the talent you have sir- well done. Gotta be satisfying as heck.
I definitely like the way you work with wood and your inventiveness in creating unique furniture and objects! Your craftsmanship and woodworking technology produce miracles of aesthetics! I love what you do and your joie de vivre!!!
Really nice job. There’s something special about making things. I used to pot. I loved seeing all the pots lined up.
That's funny- I was just thinking "he has good programming and planning skills, but workworking...?" and you said it! You are very creative and a thoughtful husband!
Great job. I would suggest rounding the tips of the knives a good bit for durability. I would be worried the pointed tips would break or chip.
WOW oh WOW! That Walnut & inlay turned out awesome! And tray underneath!? Nice touch.
It’s such a joy whenever you have an opportunity to make a high quality gift for a loved one. Great job!
That was "oh my gosh" beautiful! Looking forward to your other videos.
Oh my gosh!

Oh my gosh!
I watched until the end & enjoyed it.
Great build, the CNC pattern is really awesome. I was about to buy a wood wizz for flattening slabs but you're really making me think twice now and I'm genuinely thinking I may get a CNC instead. More research to do but thanks for providing videos that really illustrate the versatility of the CNC option!
"OH MY GOSH" This turned out BEAUTIFUL! 🤯 GREAT job!! 🥰
"oh my gosh" The cheese board came out absolutely beautiful and those knifes are gorgeous.
I've only watched a couple of your videos, but they're enough to subscribe. Always makes me laugh when you say there are people who say you can't do woodwork because you use tools.
The end product is the only thing that matters in the majority of scenarios!
Oh my GOSH....Its amazing to watch what you can do with a piece of wood. Very satisfying to watch your work. Subbed.
Looking at this you could have set small magnet in the knife handles with a storage spot for a piece of metal tool to pop those knives out easier.
This a real man, knows how to make things, and gives his wife things for the kitchen as gifts!
I love this workshop. Just awesome.
Genius idea ~ l’m disabled and sometimes bed ridden ~ something like this with the cutlery underneath and an extra place for a drink would be brilliant!!
What's up Jonny! Nice job bro; I think I might just try and make a few of these myself!
Thanks again for sharing your work!
Yes, please release the templates. Tha would be amazing. Thank you! God bless.
wow beautiful piece, you could definitely create a market for this sort of thing. absolutely amazing work.
Very cool project.
If doing something similar with "wood" bladed knives, are you familiar with the transparent wook affect? IIRC, it's basically infusing the wood structure with epoxy to give a semi-transparent affect - the epoxy would give a nice boost to the strength of the finer cutting edge.
Interesting.
I just love the ending when the wife and the guy were enjoying their snacks....life goals
Hard work, Good job... Watching you from Uzbekistan with love
Lucky woman!! Talent and a sense of humor. Amen!
Oh my gosh….your craftsmanship is amazing.
"o my gosh" this was the first video I saw, and I subbed immediately!!! 499K, so you are almost there!!! This is gorgeous. My dad and Uncles were all experts with wood and made amazing things like this. :-)
