  • Used my Tama mahogany Peart replica kit for this .. with ‪@remopercussion‬ heads and ‪@PaisteChannel‬ cymbals . Had to use Neil’s signature sticks for this (with the left one using the butt end..)
Only one kik miked so I had to use a double pedal. But realized later since there’s no 6” and 8” Tom usage, I could have used one of those inputs for a true double bass experience!
Drums - (I removed the 6” for the vid because it was in the way due my limited camera angle),
8/10/12 concerts, 12/13/15 closed toms, 18 floor tom, 20” gong bass drum not miked, not used. 24x14” kiks
Snare - 5.5x14 60’s wood Leedy. Had it a long time, never used it, but with the wood kit, I figured why not, cranked it up and tried to match Neil’s pitch and tone. Not easy. It’s a super cool snare sound he has and quite elusive.
Paiste 13” sound edge 2002 hats / 22” colorsound ride/ left to right crashes -
    20” 2002/ 20” giant beat / 10” signature splash / 16” 2002 crash / 6” splash (splashes not used ) / 20” signature crash / 18” cracked novo China / 22” ride China (unused )
Lots to think about on top of the amazing drum parts , but since it’s not to a click, there’s natural push and pull and it’s not essy to duplicate , you just try to catch a bit of Neil’s feel, and go for it ..
An iconic track, and I just wanted to see if I could get the kit in the ball park sonically in my home studio , and get a good take on video.
    Drum on! 🥁👍🏼
    The Professor rules!!!!

@@RockbertoRocks the goal was to respect the performance and sound as is .. but I did add in his two Tom stomp near the fade at the end .. he only does it live as on the LP it’s just two kicks while he plays the ride .. but I like the stomp as he made it a part of the song live, and maybe I’m just used to it bc I listened to Exit stage left so much.🥁👍🏼

Caught it! Learned from it! And loved it!
Always a pleasure to watch / listen to your mastery on this awesome instrument we play. Even greater to see your talent honor The Professor in such a beautiful way - note for note with all the nuances and dynamics. As I mentioned “I learned” today that you are more of a wrist player than manipulating the sticks with just the fingers. I can hear the weight this adds to the impact on the drums.
So many great comments but if I can add to the mix Brian, EVERY SINGLE TIME I see you behind the kit, you are playing with an awareness that others wished they had your gifts and you perform in such a way as one of us rather than above us. A lot of guys with your ability would sort of project almost a rightful arrogance. Not the end of the world really, but you just have always been the real deal. And I’ll say it for all of us: YOU inspire US still because YOU are still on your journey. You love this instrument like it’s your first time behind the kit always when you perform and you respect your fans and your craft by playing like it’s your last time behind the kit whenever you perform.
My top three rock drummers that have made an impact and inspire EVERY time I hear them: Neil Peart, Pat Torpey, and you man.
Thank you for this great performance Brian. My wife is making me clean the house and part of it is moving these heavy cast bronze R50 snare drums I have to honor Neil. If you ever need to borrow one for your work or shows, just hit me up. It’ll cost you a cup of coffee lol. It would be an honor to hear how you are inspired by these drums. I didn’t see any companies or organizations doing anything about the 50th Anniversary for Rush, so I made them myself.
Hit me up if you ever need to borrow one - I’m in Orange County and can deliver them to Los Angeles no problem. It would be an honor to compliment your sound.
All the best and wishing you and your Family an amazing 2025!

Thank you for all the kind words! It means a lot! I always strive to get better and know there’s always tons more room above you. I’m on a constant path to get to where dreams lead you, and if I don’t ever get there, at least I tried and had fun while trying.
No need for arrogance, as there’s so many colors in the crayon box you just hope your color is chosen! I have a long friggin’ way to go and I’m now about 25 years behind schedule!
But all we can do is try and hope solid effort takes you to the next plateau and give you new opportunities that create whatever success is to you, and be able to pay the damn bills so you focus on being creative.
Now, a bit older, and definitely older than younger, I can honestly say … life is far too short…. There’s too much amazing stuff to experience and never enough time.
And then there’s the extremely rare occurrence like Rush, who create something so unique that only those 3 could have done, you see life has extremely high potential and is virtually limitless, and when it’s over, it’s over, so make the most of it as much as possible!
      And .. Drum On! 🥁👍🏼

    • @Briantichydrums
      @Briantichydrums  21 день тому +2

Thank you very much! I did put considerable time into the tuning, gaffing and mixing of the snare. I bugged out for a couple days recording it trying to tune to his pitch. Then it was too ringy and when you add gaff tape that changes the dominant harmonics and that’s when I got closer and could hear it clearer. But , then there is eq and compression , and the overheads picking it up and the bottom snare mic, (which I gated to get a super quick decay). Neil’s snare tone is very elusive on Moving Pictures. And there’s also a healthy amount a reverb added on, which I don’t hear on the rest of his kit .. anyhow, I geek out pretty hard because the impact of the sound is all part of the final effect you want to have on the listener ! Also skipping over the 12” Tom to the 13” in Fill 1. That’s something I didn’t know until much later , like less than 10 years ago when I started digging into his drumming a bit more since high school..

@@BrianH020 yes it’s one of his coolest parts of the kit.
He treats his concert as their own entity .. and he cranks the closed 12” up higher than the 12” concert , and it just rages when he plays it .. I used to think he was going up to the 10” when I was a kid and practiced the parts like that! So , anyhow , to keep a roll descending in pitch , a la fill 3 in YYZ, and fill 1 in TS, he has to skip the closed 12”! Love it !!🥁👍🏼

There are 2-3 things I did or didn’t do in this take that no one will bring up .. and they aren’t important enough for me to not accept this take ..
well , it does bother me that I didn’t nail the rim shot on the first snare of the end fill of part 2 of the gtr solo, … there’s a couple hidden things in this track that you only hear when listening to the isolated track .. and if they are played too prominently , it actually sounds wrong, so I chose to leave out because it’s small .. anyhow…. With that kind of thought prices to respect
The details , it just starts to take over my days ..
and then I start asking myself “why am I doing this. I need a life “ ha …
But I do like trying to nail something that inspired me and greatly affected me from the first time heard it and still does to this day! But , it’s not my world , not my drum parts, not my band , I’m just a fan .. so to sit in that chair is a tall order , to me , even if it’s just a little cover version… it’s means a lot to me ..
and it does inspire me to get my shit together and get my music done ..
so right now , no, ht I could change my mind .. 👍🏼🥁

If I was to go for another one, it would probably be something off of exit stage left as I love his sound on that.

Not an easy task keeping those 16th notes going almost the whole entire song!

Neil’s drum parts were compositions. I noticed this early on when I was a kid. Fills developing every chorus into sections etc. I still think about his concept when coming up with parts.

Yup, I always noticed that especially like in the open hi hat B section “the world is…” where he busies it up the second time with additional kick drum syncopations and leaves more holes the first time. I made note of this as a kid and think like that whenever I’m recording and it makes sense, which is quite often! Neil rules!
