Not sure how it is in the proper lore, but in this playthrough Oxyotl isn't the guy showing up at the last moment to save the world from the forces of Chaos - he's the boogie man.
There are plenty of good reasons not to worship the ruinous powers. Oxyotl is "don't associate with the dark gods, or a little gecko man will appear out of nowhere and kill everyone".
Obviously a myth, just like demons.
