There is a version of this song with the original bass player Sami playing on stage while Marko is descending to the audience to see how it is down there. Floor early pregnant with Freya, her singing (although there is less sound quality) spot on.

Sam, I think Stargazers was part of the band’s first album in 1997 or 1998, but I heard it for the first time in 1999. It was the first Nightwish song I ever listened to, and I remember the timeframe well because when I heard it I was about to complete all of my Army training before going on to my first duty station. Can’t believe it’s been 25 years already! Thank you for this reaction 😊

The song dates back to the _Oceanborn_ album (1998), when Tarja was the Nightwish vocalist, and Tuomas was still in his pre-symphonic (fantasy/power metal) phase. At the time, I think Tarja's voice was the main thing that elevated Nightwish above the pack of trying-to-sound-like-Iron-Maiden metal bands. (For extra throwback effect, Floor is actually doing it in Tarja's high soprano style.)
There is a video of Tarja doing this number, although no longer with Nightwish at the time: "Tarja "Stargazers" Luna Park Ride (Live in Buenos Aires 2011)"

A very young Tuomas wrote this song and it was released as the first song on the Oceanborn album in 1998. The lyrics are interesting, showing that he was at that age already thinking about the universe, earth, evolution and mankind. And that was probably the reason it was added to the setlist of this tour: the subject fits the last 2 albums of the band: the universe, earth, evolution and us.
Tragedienne of heavens is the earth (as it is full of tragedies, evolution being the biggest non stop tragedy)
Watching the eyes of the night (the stars)
Sailing the virgin oceans (earth sailing through empty space)
A Planetride for Mother and Child (earth and moon)
Tuomas knows something about the history of astronomy: "Following the pages of Almagest"
(Wikipedia :-) The Almagest is a 2nd-century Greek-language mathematical and astronomical treatise on the apparent motions of the stars and planetary paths, written by Claudius Ptolemy (AD 100 - 170). One of the most influential scientific texts in history.
BTW The Wembley 2015 version of this song is almost not reacted to, but as good as this one (And Marko whistling...)

Stargazers was off the set list during the Annette years. Annette doesn't have the operatic tone quality or range for this song.

As far as I know, they only played this on Oceanborn tour, and next time on Once tour. I've heard an audio of 2004 live version, and it was pretty bad. It was probably because it was at the end of their really long tour, the playing was really sloppy and even Tarja's vocals were bad.
