Toyota 4Runner Camping SUV Conversion. Life in 20 square feet. Urbanlander

- I give you a glimpse of living in a 1996 Toyota 4Runner in my latest outing. I call what I do "Urbanlanding." A little City and a little Outdoors camping. I live OUT of the 4Runner not IN it and that is the way to go when you are traveling light and free. I love this method on shorter excursions or when road tripping over long distance. My traveling Fort.

I’m a single guy, and spend almost all of my time alone. Sometimes I get lonely, then when I get around people, that feeling goes away REAL quick.
Ha. I know, right?
I am single, too. I don't feel alone, but if I spend time with people, I wanted to get away from them. I love animals. Human, not so much.
🙋♀️just saying this very thing tonight! 🙋♀️
@@kelvinyany Same-o same-o.
When you’re lonely out on an adventure remember that your recording of said adventure and commentary brings us who aren’t fortunate enough to get out like that yet along for the ride! Even if it’s days, months, years later!
Hey Steve - its better to be lonely than to be stuck with the wrong person. Getting unstuck is never pleasant. Cheers 🍻0
Agreed. After awhile a girlfriend feels like prison. Either prison or mental torture. Very rarely a happy medium
My father moved us from Seattle to Carlsbad in 1996 when I was 12. I am no longer there, but all your talk about about how it was then and is now is giving me serious nostalgia. Thanks for the trip back in time!
A group would be nice under the condition you can ditch them at the first sign of asshattery. Ultimately solo is the way to go.
That is one drawback. I am picky in choosing my friends and pals.
@@XplorerSteveDIY That is just a sign of intelligence, Steve !! :)
@@XplorerSteveDIY That's why Linescrew is 1luckyguy
Ah, the life of a middle aged, retired instagram model.
Sir, please promote Kiwi Van Man
LOLOL .... Good one, Andrew :)
@@trailerparksupervisor7046 I have met him in New Zealand. Got some videos of him on my channel from Auckland. Good guy. I actually talked to him on the phone last week.
Steve - Love your style. You give us an awesome boondocking and road trip model for us to follow.
I enjoy what you do Steve. I also respect to see someone older able to be out enjoying life. I will retire from a fire department job 4 years from tomorrow. I will still be working after that but hopefully on my terms. Enjoy yourself.
I'm looking forward to retirement too! Got a few years yet, so I'm living vicariously thru you.
Keeping it real! Great video Steve! Always learn a lot watching your videos and the experiences you share.
I love your videos... You do exactly what I would do. It's fun to see!
dude i love the video, just got myself a 4runner, you're living the dream!
Great video Steve...
Thanks for bringing us along..
Safe travels 🙏👍
One of the drawbacks of living in San Diego was the overcast skies, it affected my mood quite a bit since I was used to the AZ sun. I miss the walks, riding the trolley to Mexico or heading to downtown SD. You are correct, it would be nice to find people that you could travel with yet maintain your own space. So exciting to see your excursions..
Hey Steve. Just wanted to say that this is my favorite 4Runner build! I’m in my last semester of school and plan to make the same build when I’m done. Gonna be buying all the tools soon. Love your content.
Beautiful place, Steve! Thanks for the trip. I really enjoyed the video. 😎
This was so fun to watch! Thanks for making it :) *inspired*
Always Look Forward to your VIDEO'S! You have the Best 'STEALTH-Urban-lander' Set UP!!...Cheers from Canada!
Cool life for sure. Thanks for taking us along on your trip
Relaxing just by watching your video.. Thanks Steve👍👍👍
Great way to live...exploring and enjoying life! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Man : wish I could discover this channel early thank you for sharing! ❤️
Hi Steve, I always enjoy your videos, maybe because I seem to have a lot in common with you. Or because I love traveling and can live vicariously through your videos. I like building stuff too but I am not as proficient as you are at building things. Anyway, because of that, I thought about reaching out to you in the past but it felt weird until this video when you mentioned that it would be nice to have a posse' join in on the fun. I will give you my quick background. I have been in Vegas for the last 20 years, ride a motorcycle, and I am a full Korean. Currently married but we are almost at the point of liberation. I took my Montero to Northwest this Summer and we went up and down Oregon and Washington coasts with a friend for 10 days. I work for myself and I am down to join in on one of your excellent adventures if the schedule permits. Best regards, A J
Very cool. People mention Facebook as a way to organize but I really hate all social media except YT. Still thinking....
Really enjoyed the video. It’s cool that you do this!
Great video, Steve! I’m just starting out in my Roadtrek Zion. Definitely not too stealthy, but am having fun. You have inspired me from your first video, so many thanks! I, too, wish I had a small group to hang with, at times! Keep up the fun!
I like your adult fort on wheels
Hello Xplorer Steve, fellow Korean here in Phoenix, AZ. Appreciate your videos as I am setting up a mini camper in my 04 Honda CRV for short excursions. Not as nice as yours but you have given me some great ideas and tips. Look forward to your future videos! Regards, CK from Phoenix.
I like your set up, as well as how you talk about urban-landing (I like that, by the way)...and I am in the same boat as you! Thanks for the awesome videos!
Looks so amazing. 👍
This is so relaxing to watch. Thanks for sharing
I'm hoping to start traveling soon with new to me 2003 4runner. Thank you for your videos
Best of luck!
You always have a nack for finding the good snacks. Another good trip.
What fun, Steve! I hope you enjoyed yourself in this beautiful beach community!
I did!
Sure do love watching these adventures you go on👏🏼❤️😀
Thanks for the Carlsbad virtual tour and your experiences doing the Urbanlander thing.
Thanks for the journey...
Lot of good tips. Thanks
Looks like too much fun bud. I'll be retiring in about 4 years and planning on doing as much traveling around the US pretty much like you're doing, except with as much fishing involved as possible. Thanks for sharing. Subbed.
I live in Escondido and just bought a 01 4runner. Love what your doing cool vids.
Yuma is the place for winter. 4 people is plenty to keep from getting lonely. Moving up I-25 with the weather. 4 Runners are the best.
I grew up in Carlsbad, Great town!
I live closer to downtown San Diego now. Great video, Thanks!
Love how you do it Explorer Steve!
I live in my vehicle full time and I couldn't be happier.one of the best decisions I've made. You kinda look like Sylvester Stallone, specially when you got your sun glasses on.
YO ADRION.
Really like your videos, thanks for the info, I wanna set up my own rig.
Living the life! Definitely inspiring. Keep it up :)
Looks like an amazing trip!
I feel the 20-years-ago thing. We like Monterrey, Carmel, San Simeon...Wendy first found exotic cars in La Jolla as a teenager. We plan on taking Serenity back one day and seeing it and the desert back side at a slow pace...we'll see!
Sounds like a plan.
Almost bought a studio at La Jolla Cove, but decided on a 2-master bedroom condo 15 miles inland instead... Big regrets now😔😔
Love your set up my suv bed is on top of plastic containers, its a pain in the but when I need something in one if those containers. Lol
Great video 👍🏼
When the boarder opens I'll be spending a ton of time on the Oregon/Cali coast again. Can't wait
Thanks for sharing this video
great video. We love Carlsbad. We always hang at South Ponto beach. It has clean amenities, a friendly crowd, and awesome waves for surfing and boogie boarding w/o rip tides. Kid-friendly beach
Thanks for the tips!
Nice vid Steve .
Another great informative video
Hey, great video of my old neighborhood. I'm retired too at 55, and will come explore with you whenever.
Very cool!
Dude, I get what you mean about wanting some people to mob with. Next week I am starting out boogie boarding and kayaking in San Clemente and working my way up to San Simeon to hike and see the elephant seals. (Not retired yet, so working ½ days while the marine layer burns off - Jackeries and wifi hotspots rock! - as does doing what I want when I want :) Slowly working on my over/urban-lander now -- can’t wait to get out of a tent and into my rig! I already have my route planned to take it from San Diego to the Olympic peninsula!! Your videos make me soooooo impatient! (And I totally got “tickled,” too, by my Jackery when I first got it, doing wattage input tests with my Renogy and Goal Zero panels.)
Have fun planning and building the rig. I get jealous when others start the process. Ha. The new Jackery 1000 is more than ample and it or something like it is a must have for any small weekender build. IMO.
Your videos inspire me I'm on east coast but have plans to do same with a pathfinder I'm purchasing.
Hey Steve nice video ....funny to see local places in videos of people Ive followed for a while
I live in Oceanside .....hit me up next time you are out here and I can show you some nice places
Cool cat you are. Thanks Steve...really dig the 4Runner setup. I have a 2018 Tacoma access cab with a grey leer shell. Toyota’s are great vehicles...you can get so much mileage out of them...they look good to......Anyhow just my opinion I guess....
Just south of Carlsbad is Leucadia. Just off the 101 and between the 101 and Vulcan, there's dirt lots you can park overnight. Safe, quiet and literally off the 101. Plus I love the little shops and eateries.
Living the dream!
I wish my pops was this cool
We do the same thing I have a 2wd 3rd gen 4Runner I just drive on the roads and make off trail nothing crazy I just like to go and explore and see new places I don’t need a 4wd drive here in California right now. I’m a new subscriber.
Thanks for the sub Milton. Happy travels.
We'll be out there next summer exploring. Let's grab lunch!
Just got a 08 XC90.. going to do something similar with samish attitude... look forward to the channel! -Frank
I am your female counterpart and a testament to the fact that there are single women out there who enjoy the freedom to travel solo in a car camper. I recently purchased a 98 4Runner to eventually tow a small trailer, but in the meantime decided to turn it into a car camper to do exactly what you are doing. Still a work in progress, but I've taken my initial voyage to Ponto Beach ( Carlsbad ) and had no problem stealth camping. I enjoy your videos and wish I had the workshop and tools that you have! If you generate enough interest in "mob" campers, I'm in ! If your travels take you to Palm Springs, drop a line...Happy Trails!
So cool. Good luck on your build and live a fabulous life!
I'm working on the retired part..! Last week I spent $400 in hotels working out of town / out of pocket. This type of build is high priority for my 4runner. For what I spent in hotels in October, I could've had a very nice build out. I too want a low floor, and have to consider areas for my pack out tool boxes. Maybe a split design is in order..! Great vids. Keep them up. Be safe out there.
Good luck and have fun is the design and build out of your rig.
@@XplorerSteveDIY What do you think of this idea? I'm just now starting my plans. looking for input. ua-cam.com/video/siAnkSVZPXs/v-deo.html
Yup I have a Dodge conversion van into camper van doing the same thing as you 👍
Southern California's pretty awesome I lived there for 22 years. I know alot of the spots to vehicle stealth camp!
Number 136 like! Thanks for the vlog!
Thats a great rig for Zion and Bryce. Just add a bike (the only way to see Zion past The Scenic Route) and park on the street or one of the hotels.
My favorite area
Hay Steve,
Another cool video.
1. I love my Jackery
2. My brother is into wood turning, he would love that tree. Woodworking 220-7 on UA-cam
3. Hanging out with you would be fun, unfortunately I’m not retired. I live in the east coast, and I’m married to a wonderful women who hates car camping or camping period.
4. I have a Toyota sienna, and like all the room and the ability to park where ever I like without sticking out like a camper. The longest I stayed out in it was seven days. I stayed at camp sites and pitch a tent to make the owners of the camp site happy. For some reason they don’t like van campers.
5. I agree with you, even in the sienna I would not recommend full time living, it’s just too small.
6. Maybe someday we can hang out for a day if our paths cross.
I'd love the Sienna for a conversion platform.
We just got back to Vegas from Paso Robles and Cambria. We can’t go stealth because of our travel trailer, but we recently became Harvest Host members so stayed one night at a winery for “free”. I’m anxious to camp at Lake Mead now that we have cooler weather, plus I want to play with our 120 watt solar panels some more. There’s is just something magical about seeing amps go into your battery lol.
I know what you mean.
When I went to San Diego in a limousine, I met a cool guy at the nightclub and the next day we got food at yummy buffet!
Steve napping in SoCal! Fantastic. In San Diego Mission Beach (Crown Point) is my go to.
Very cool!
Love your little 4Runner. Can you tell my what kind of camera 📷 equipment you use?
The "green stuff" at the Italian restaurant for your last evening's dinner looks like broccolini. I often see that at Italian places.
Dude, nice video. I'm almost there with ya. I'm in the Sacramento area. Look me up if you're in the area. I can't go fulltime yet but I'll meet up with ya for some partime outings. Happy trails!
I'm living in my Chevy Tahoe on a trip right now but not as good as you are doing it I've been staying at a truck stop in Monroe mi heading home today fun stuff
People just don't know....cheers.
I’m not close to retiring but I relate to the Costco shorts and tshirt comment 😂
Ha. It's the retired guy uniform out here in vegas.Year around.
If you haven't replaced your lower ball joints I highly recommend it, also if you get the oem toyota part it will be reassuring 👍
Shaken not stirred, how appropriate on this day that we lost the legendary Sean Connery. 💕
That is who I was thinking of when I quoted it. Weird.
Great video! Ever have anyone rustle you in the middle of the night trying to get inside your home on wheels? Keep on wandering! 🌍
Naw
Nice trip! I never thought to visit Carlsbad. 18:56 - that's Broccolini. Some people call it Baby Broccoli. It's a hybrid of Gai Lan (Chinese Broccoli) and regular Broccolini conceived in No. Cal. It's my favorite especially when roasted.
Thanks for the info.
Wow I haven't been in that area in 30 years, it sure has changed.
Really enjoy your videos. I noticed that your Jackery is hooked up to your car DC. There looks to be something in between the connection. Is it to regulate the charge to your battery or prevent the battery from being drained? Im looking for something like that in my setup.
The Jackery gets a steady infeed of watts from the 50 watt solar up top. The Fridge only drains between 1 and 50 watts so even with charging camera's and computers and phone I usually remain topped off. When I am driving, I hook the Jackery up with the 12vdc charge plug. It is a great unit for this rig.
@@XplorerSteveDIY Really cool, thanks Steve!
Thanks for posting. I'm currently working hard, maxing out investing, paying the mortgage off early, living below my means and pricing used 2015 Sienna mini-vans. I think you know where this is headed. See you in 5 years!
Keep it up, Freedom is a long hard road for most but discipline will get you there.
Where did you get those shades from? I have a 99 4runner and would like to have some privacy when camping
I hope you got a few Heirloom tomatoes at the farmers market.. They looked perfect !!!
That was a good FM. You know how they are here in Vegas. Hot sauce, beef jerky and water filtration devices. Not that there wasn't some of that there...
Hey Steve, I too have a 1996 4-runner, Limted 4x4. I would so love to build mine out like yours and join your mob!
wish you stopped at the "The Garden State " place for breakfast. Maybe they had an east coast bagel. Yum
I tried metal detecting, but l don't look good in bermuda shorts and loafers.
That's my strong point.
What's your favorite clam chowder place? A lot of good places in the wharf in Monterey.
What model of metal detector did you get?
From the looks of it, Carlsbad Beach seems nice because there aren't lots of riff raff and dirtbags. Change my mind!
You should mob with Eminence FrontX5.
I just purchased a 99 4runner myself and reconditioning it back to it's original state. With that said I am planning either a trip to southern Florida or west coast. If you ever do a meet up or California tour in 2021 I would be in 😁
If I go to Cali I was thinking about San Diego and is it called slab city by the saltant sea
I'm thinking about trying to start a third gen group here locally lol I see so many since I have bought mine lol they are everywhere
Wow! I was so surprised to see you have a new hobby-that’s awesome! You’ve got a great machine. It just takes time to become proficient-they say about a year before you fully master a machine. Facebook groups are a great resource for getting questions answered and it’s always fun to see what others find. Friend request me if you’d like, Aggie A. Hall Good luck and happy hunting
It is great fun and exercise. YT is the only social media I have.
@@XplorerSteveDIY SMART, dude !!! Stay away from FB and Instagram .... Nothing but stress added to one's life .....
Carlsbad is where we are - great city!
It's a favorite.
You got to take a picture next to the Zzyzx Rd sign next time on your way home.
