- Now that I have traveled and lived out of my Toyota 4Runner for months I wanted to give you a tour. This is how I have been living out of it for quite a while now with no big changes since I've settled into things.
Nothing is staged for display to make things look more roomy or neater for that perfect Instgram shot or anything so enjoy the honesty in this one.

A good tour and you have some of the best ideas I’ve seen. some never get around to mentioning ... wet naps, lighters and candles: we all need to stay clean, warm and a friendly flame for company
We used the candles while eating dinner! They make citronella candles for the holder as well so it's a nice additional purpose.

Great tour and tips!!! I follow SUV Rving too and really like his channel. Nice idea to keep that window breaker / seat belt cutter there. I keep it on my keychain but might be easier to access hanging up. So many different ideas I've not heard of before, very helpful video. I have a Hyundai Santa Fe so looking to convert that for living out of and camping. I'll check out your links above. Get warm!!!! LOL
I really enjoy his channel as well. I wish someday my videos are more organized like his are. Yes, the window breaker / seat belt cutter is almost a necessity for me and I'm always surprised people don't have anything in their car. Glad to hear you at least have one! Good luck with the Santa Fe. I found it's all about finding the middle ground between comfort and efficiency and only experience will tell you what things you need and don't need.

I wasn't sure about the hammock at first since it looked so small but I love it! It holds so much stuff and I clip and snap all sorts of things off of it. It's great to have various things above your head when sleeping like a strong flashlight or knife.

Good setup, I like how you installed the solar wires with the pipe cushion and window guard. Subscribed!
That pipe cushion is so important! Park with that side towards the wind so blowing snow doesn't come in but without that insulation it'll blow right in. It also cuts down on wind noise when you drive. One time while I was driving I accidentally tried to close the window so it got stuck and immediately went down on its own and the insulation almost blew out. Saved it in the nick of time!

Still a lot of places for a 19' trailer. I'm currently at Buffalo Gap National Grasslands camped near the ledge. Beautiful out here. There are a bunch if huge campers near me and along the ledge.
Terrific detailed video, Jay. You look a very young 47. How can you handle the cold? Have you ever tried a 12 volt electric blanket? I give you credit. Keep up the good job and keep it coming.
Lots of blankets, that's the key. Normal electric blankets use up a LOT of electricity so I looked at infrared ones that aren't nearly as warm but even those take up way too much. Lots of blankets work fine though. If things got severe I still had my 20 degree backpacking quilt to toss on top of everything but even down to 7F I haven't had to resort to that.
I have that truck, and the third gen, I love then, did i also mention I love the T4R?

Just found your channel, what an awesome video! I hope you’re staying warm tonight. What an interesting life you have! Do you have a philosophy of life you live by/ do you have any advice for a guy who feels a little misplaced in the world?
Misplaced in the world is tough. I felt it as well and getting away to nothing was one of my strategies to deal with it. One of my philosophies is a common one, don't focus on anything you can't control. A lot of people tend to do this a lot and it's a stress spiral since nothing can be done and it just promotes stress which can manifest physically if bad enough. I also believe in the mindset of not saying "I can't do this" but instead saying "How can I do this?" Too many people say "I can't do this" then focus on it which makes them more depressed or makes them give up on it. Asking yourself how you can do it keeps you thinking of ways to go about it which is something within your control and presents as a challenge instead of a dead end. Hope that helps somehow!
That's a lot of things but great job organizing it or semi organizing it!!
I'll organize things thinking I use something more often and some things not often but a week later I'll need those not often things and things get switched around. I'm still learning and I'll get it down some day.
Do you like having the bed elevated so high? I have a tough time sleeping in the back of my 4R even with nothing under me due to lack of space.
mine was as high as his but i had to lower it so i could actually have headroom
Okay it’s time to head to Florida! I think you need to keep warmer, because you mentioned how cold you could get or how cold it was several times. Head south young man!

Oh man, I actually can't remember the exact model numbers and don't have it here. Front and back are Bilstein shock absobers though with a differential drop in front and Old Man Emu 800 lbs heavy duto coils in back. I was considering the 400 lbs springs, and still wonder if I should have gone that route, but the shop I went to suggested the 800 since I was close to that in back and the 400 would have been compressed quite a bit. Lift heights seem so easy when you consider a car with no load at all but with a load it varies so much it's hard to tell how much it's lifted but I think I got 2.5" in front and back. The back varies depending on how much I have in the car.
How far south do you travel so you dont get too cold in winter?
Great video! Got a lot of ideas from it for camping! Thought I'd pass along a few thoughts I had while watching.
For shelving in the back, instead of going completely plywood, make it a hybrid and use closetmaid wire shelving for the actual shelves so they dont eat up much vertical space. 1/4" plywood (1/2" for overkill....with 2-inch metal "L" brackets to secure them to the bottom and each other) for the back and both sides would give more than enough stability and mounting surfaces for the wire shelving without sacrificing much space wise. For the top, use more wire shelving that you can use your netting to secure things to. For the shelves, mount them with the lip facing up instead of down to prevent items from sliding...thats a pro-tip ;).
Use industrial style coax screw-on anchors to secure the shelving all the way around, they're much stronger than the closetmaid ones. I'd also recommend using "L" brackets on both sides of the plywood. It' makes a surprisingly sturdy joint if you stagger them so they arent directly opposite each other...and use the 2 screw versions (2 holes that go out...if you look at a capital L, the 2 holes go up and 2 holes go right.). So the joint is extra strong put one in every 4 inches on the insides starting at the edge, and then on the outside start 2" from the edge so they alternate. It wont move.
You could then also screw a cheapish Rapdom style Molle panel to the side facing the bed and attach Molle pouches to store your most used items a little more neatly. That so-called organizer on the back of the drivers seat is driving my organizational OCD crazy.
Good points. One of the biggets priorities on this build was having nothing fall apart on me since I would be nowhere near any workshops to make major repairs. I also wanted to keep the top 3/4" so I could screw things in and have a really good hold. I'm actually glad I overbuilt things though after the probably hundreds of miles of bumpy roads I drove last year. JB Weld can only get me so far if something major broke.

Bug netting was DIY. By using magnets on the inside I never have to take the left rear one off and that's one requirement I had. I simply used those magnetic strips with adhesive backing, stuck them on the window, then tried my best to smoothly attach the netting. Afterwards I made really rough cuts around the magnetic strips, enough to fold, then stitched them together with needle and thread by hand. I also epoxied small neodynium magnets on top to hold it in place even with strong gusts. The bottom is kind of open but nothing gets through it so it works well enough.

Haha! I didn't think about the Oreos thing until you mentioned it but they totally do. I still use those things all the time. I even hang my keys from them. I even tied a wire bread bag tie onto a USB cable and use the magnets to hold them up now and then quickly and easily. I originally bought them to hold up mosquito netting over the back door when open but I haven't done that yet.

Cool setup. I have a 2020 TRD Pro and I'm building it for camping. I really like the Kamchatkagear. Does that hit you in the head while driving??
I'm 5'6" and it sits about 1" above my hair so I don't notice it. If I wear a hat I can feel it sometimes. Tough to say how well it would work for you but an option is lower the seat a little. Maybe.

Whats your solution for condensation? I like your pipe insulation idea. I myself have a 4runner, just order the wind visors. Any ideas how to deal with condensation in a windy and rainy terrain
Sadly you will never eliminate condensation in smaller spaces but I fight it with 2 fans. If I think it will rain overnight and it won't be too windy I'll set up my awning so I can open my window most of the way. I'll also put up 2 battery operated fans against the windows, one in front and one in back, and have the back one plugged into a battery bank so it can run all night. Other ways to fight condensation is similar to backpacking and choosing sites. If you definitely don't want it you stay away from lake or river side camp sites, stay away from valleys. Don't overheat yourself with too much clothes or blankets which results in you expelling more moisture. There are lots of things you can do but sadly I have yet to find a 100% solution for inside a car. If it's windy and rainy I park with the right side of my car into the wind then crack the left 2 windows and point fans out the cracks. Sadly that's the most you can do really. Someone suggested moisture absorbers but using chemicals costs a lot of money and the type you plug in to refresh them uses too much electricity. I gave them a try but they don't absorb enough relative to the electricity they would use so I left them back in storage recently. Good luck. Really I think condensation is the worst when it's below freezing out and the condensation freezes in layers on a window causing a thick layer which when melts just drips down like crazy. That can't be good for electronics and potential mold. During the day I'd recommend driving with the AC on full blast but set to warmer so you can circulate as much dry air as you can throughout.

It's a 2017 5th gen TRD Off Road Premium.
Been planning to being traveling and working on the road. The biggest question I have is how to have consistent WiFi and how to shower. I have looked at some hotspot devices but am curious, how do you find places to shower on a daily basis? Asking during a pandemic when most gyms are closed.
For internet I've found the better dispersed sites most often don't have any service or only a tiny bit. I bought a weBoost signal booster (amzn.to/3m5lREd) for just a cell phone to help and found it helps a tiny bit. You may have to look into something like that but one of the bigger ones instead since this model only works for whatever is mounted onto the cradle. I found if I'm somewhere where service is maybe 90% not there it'll give me 1 bar more consistently. Not bad but only good enough for messaging, not work that requires a constant connection.
As for showers, yeah, it's been harder. I normally park with the right side of the car towards whatever road people would come from so the car can be a shield. I would fill my little 750ml backpacking cup with some water and soap then, strip down to my boxers, then use a wash cloth to wash my face then body. I would then use paper towels, dampen them with water, and wipe down since the soapy water would by then be mostly dry on me. I did this about every 3-4 days and washed my hair every 2 days. I just walk away from the camp site with a 1L bottle and Dr Bronner soap and camp towel. I would just bend over, pour a little water over my head, then soap into my hand and clean my hair with one hand. Then I'd use the other hand to pour water to rinse my hair. I found I can thoroughly wash my hair with about 0.8L of water. Not too bad but it's good to have the .2L extra to rinse off the hands as well. It's not the best way to stay clean but it worked for me even in summer with a lot of hiking. I guess it doesn't bother me as much since it's about the level of hygiene I got used to at times in the Marines. I think on my last road trip of about 50 days I showered 3 times. 1 time at an RV campground then 2 at Grand Teton National Park. All times you can just buy showers without staying.

Yes, so far so good. I bought a cargo box for it, the Thule Sport, so my solar panel sits next to it loving the 4Runner. I got bigger and better tires as well since all that added weight was pushing the limits of the factory tires. Now I head into all sorts of places without too much worry.

What are the window covers and how do I get some?
They're Reflectix that I cut out. I then bought black put curtains then used spray adhesive to glue the Reflectix onto the curtain then cut out the excess. The excess I rolled over onto industrial double sided tape. This way I can face the black out when it's cold or when I'm stealth camping or face the shiny side out in hotter areas. You may have to watch some videos on how to cut Reflectix to shape. Mine aren't a perfect fit but good enough.

Officers got real rooms. Funny you ask though because I did spend a lot of time on a ship and those cuts were so short if you laid on your back and then raised your knees up it would smack the bottom of the other cot! I hated that and knew my bed would at the very least need to be taller.

I love all the little tricks that you have done that you figured out through trial an error. My buddy lives out of his van and he uses a product called Eva-Dry mini dehumidifier to help with interior moisture, they have little beads that turn color when it's time to plug it in to dry it out. they are on amazon. Hey there! No plans, everything just came from my head. Yes, I have a bunch of those Eva-Dry thingies actually, a couple for the safe, and one in several large boxes with a ton of brass thingies in them. You know. wink wink. I did bring two with me on the road trip but my solar setup couldn't power them overnight to dry them out so I never pulled them out. I may reconsider them for just the severe cold nights though. The whole Virginia mess is crazy though. Good luck with that.

Nyah. The only time I do that is during a commute to or back home and there are no options. Mostly for those I sleep in truck stops, especially Pilot stops. One Pilot didn't allow it so I hung out, used their bathroom one last time, blacked out my rear windows, then drove to a hotel parking lot, jumped in the back and just went to sleep. I'd rather be in the wilderness where it's quieter with more privacy.
Where do you keep your spare tire?
Yep, under the back of the car. Before I got the car lifted I have dragged the tire a couple of times while off roading so I'm happier now.
Jay have you thought about removing backseats to give more room?
The back seats are out. They are huge and even folded down use up a lot of space so that was step 1 in my build. The mounts where the seats bolt on also make for great mounts for the platform.

Why no storage on top of the 4Runner?
I went the first year without but have one now. Originally I wanted it as incognito as possible but now I just needed the space.
Hey man why don’t you get a roof cargo box to put more storage up top? You could probably free up lots of space from the black box. Also I’m surprised you didn’t do the van life route? I’m sure you have your reasons. This is the first video I watched from your channel. I’m always planning how I’d do something like this to travel non stop.
I actually have a cargo box now but the narrower type so I can still fit the solar panel next to it. I saw someone have their solar panel on top of the cargo box but I didn't want that extra weight to damage the hinges. I originally didn't want one to as to keep a lower profile. It just look like an SUV but got the box for my girlfriend and I to travel. As for the van route I wanted a good 4x4 so I can go places vans couldn't for more secluded camp sites. I will admit I searched for 4x4 vans but even used old ones were pretty pricey. The 4runner has been on some pretty rough roads, especially Colorado, and I haven't had any fears of getting stuck yet. The TRD Off Road has the crawl control as well so I'm not worried about getting buried in sand at all. I do need to get a winch installed in the front but that's another time. Before I made my decisions I watched so many channels and borrowed a lot of ideas. Have you seen SUV RVing?
Jay Wanders Out I haven’t seen SUV RVing but i watched a lot of builds like four wheel campers and etc. I would do a similar build like yours because it’s steathy and minimal. Perfect for solo

Yeah, I know he has a business that's semi-autonomous so he could spend the money. I'm very fixed so have to keep things under control unless I can get a lot of side gigs or something. Maybe someday though.

Weathertec. They started with super well fitting floor protectors then branched out. I had their floor boards for a previous car and loved it as well so they're a good company. Made in the USA too.

If you want more space a Suburban is definitely a better way to go. Maybe if you had 2 people consider going bigger.

Yes the 5th gen 4runner back seats come completely off pretty easily. It clears up so much room I highly recommend it.
Enjoyed the tour and all the ideas and solutions. But why do you have duplicates, triplicates and even quadruple number of the same items? If you got rid of all the duplicate stuff, you would have more room & organization would be easier.
Which items in particular? This was my first trip away from my storage unti so I'll admit I brought a bunch that I probably didn't need but I also didn't want to waste money buying things in case I did need them. For sure I have too many knives, flashlights, lighters, hand sanitizers, batteries, and camera equipment but any specific examples I can mull over?

Haha! I just traveled all over Croatia and carried 3 different tripods the whole time. Yes, I definitely went crazy with those. I didn't even show my bag of GoPro adapters! I have a lot of stuff sacks for backpacking and I actually had extra gear with me to give to thru hikers on the PCT. Before this video I had two 2 liter collapsible water bottles, more lighters and lip balms and 2 other little tripods. All given away. I really like having the option of having the tripod I need for the time so I guess I'll stick with it a little longer. I carry a smaller tripods for backpacking, a medium one for long hikes, and my big one for shorter or more specific hikes like the big one for somewhere with a lot of waterfalls. I actually had a lot of mosquito netting because I was trying to figure out some way of covering the entire back with the trunk open. Still working on that idea so I may keep the extra netting around. Yep, I need to reduce weight though so I'll reevalute items again soon since I'll be home again.

I’m think now instead of a van, I want to convert a Highlander Hybrid- for the good gas mileage - yes - but also for the climate control that is possible with a hybrid vehicle! I might consider a hybrid mini-van like a Pacifica but I like the little higher clearance that a Highlander has.
Currently I’m occasionally weekend camping in a Prius which is great for one person but I have a 90 lb dog. It’s doable in a Prius (just barely) but for a more full time adventure, I’ll need the room of a Highlander or mini-van.
Thinking about a Highlander is what brought me to your 4Runner build videos. I liked seeing how easy the seats came out!!
The 2021 Sienna is a hybrid model but it is way too expensive- even a used model in a couple of years would exceed my budget - and folks are saying the 2nd row seats cannot be removed without a lot of trouble & voiding the warranty so that’s off my list of possible vehicles.
I was wondering if you could actually have a hammock bed in there?
I would say no. To even hang a small hammock I need maybe 10 feet of space, maybe a little less. Even if you could find mount points there just isn't enough room inside.

Not really. Several people asked similar questions for my Q&A. Basically I'm single, no kids, no debt, and sold my home. I'm far from rich so am doing some side jobs to just supplement my income a tiny bit until I'm old enough to pull from my 401k.

Why not just get a small funnel instead of using extra bottles for your water? 1 less step and takes up less room.
The 3 liter bottles are perfect for filling a 1L from inside the car. To get water out of the 5gal container I have to open the passenger car door. I like it this way so I make sure the 3L bottles are full and I don't have to deal with the 5gallon for days at a time.

Way too much stuff, and definitely not organized. However, the more the travel the more you will figure out what you need based on usage, or lack of. Organization is key when space is at a premium..safe travels.
Yep. I didn't want to have to buy anything while on the road when I had them in my storage unit so I took a lot. I'm leaving some stuff behind but bringing some other stuff I wish I had so it's a trade off.

Who needs a house when you can travel the world in the best and reliable vehicle in the world. You can't go across the world in a kart. You can in a Toyota though.
