I own a Macan S. And have driven the 4 cylinder. The engine in the S is a beautiful engine, and magical compared to the 4 cylinder. The 4 cylinder seems labored and to be honest, a little disappointing. For buyers new to porsche, I would opt for the S, or pick another manufacturer. The 4 cylinder is just too pedestrian.
12:40 The 718 base engine definitely makes more power than this, but slightly less torque. With the car being way lighter idk how you can feel like this is more powerful.
Haven't driven the base Macan, but the new Q5 with pretty much the same engine. If I'm going for the 4 cyl I rather do that with tech/comfort options instead of the T package at the same price
@@stevemartegani interesting. I found the previous SQ5 to be better than the previous Macan S. Felt quicker off the line and interior was a lot nicer. Macau’s PDK felt clunky around town. More cargo space in the Audi as well.
Seems to offer a really strong argument for a Golf R? The more pedestrian Volkswagen is better in every measurable metric (aside from ground clearance - which means the VDub has better center of gravity) ~ 50 more horsepower, ~ 600 fewer pounds, and the option for 3 pedals seems much more attractive. And it’s 10k less if your ego and need for status can look past the the badge on the bonnet…
13:22: do you mean acceleration? Because speed is the same between the 4-cylinder and the V6 in the Macan (speed = how fast you can go, and stability at high speed)... Acceleration is a bit different, not speed. I chose a base Macan over the V6, because -- as you say here -- the V6 engines in Macans are not that much better, seriously, and I thought not worth the price. For me, the acceleration of the base Macan is plenty good for passing, getting on expressways, etc., and it may even be better at high speed because of its light weight. I've never regretted not getting the V6 Macan, and I've owned cars with much bigger engines and much higher hp/torque ... (Glad to see you agree at 16:45)
Buyer beware: the previous gen V6 Macan engine is unreliable, leaks oil, suffers from turbo lag, and is generally mehh. The current gen V6 GTS cars are selling at $90k used. I just bought a 2018 Sport Edition, essentially a Macan T from 2018. For doing SUV stuff and canyon driving it has plenty of power and responsiveness. If you want/need more power and torque, tunes will elevate the performance nearly to the Macan S level. Upgrade the turbo and you can match the GTS and Turbo and with less weight. However, I don’t think that much power is necessary. Macan is great because of the PDK, excellent ride quality, while being fun to drive and quick through corners. All of those things don’t require more HP.
Good judgement call on that Camaro. He could have been drunk or on drugs or both. It would make me sick to spend Porsche money and have a nit wit like that crash into me, provided that I survived the crash. That Porsche looked and sounded good even with the 4 cylinder engine. I think the lighter weight of the 4 cylinder makes a positive difference in handling. The t option is wise if you can save 15% rather than ordering options separately. Good review as always.
I remember test driving a Macan S in the first year of production and was greatly disappointed in its handling capability after reading all of the amazing reviews.....little did i know you needed all the right suspension options tacked on($$$) to get to what the reviews were all about. This Macan T is pretty much what I'd get as a daily driver. If you don't have those options there is nothing special about the Macan IMO.
I don’t get how people are comparing driving when there is no comparison at all. That Camaro driver was an idiot hands down and I feel he was trying to show off. Nonetheless, that Macan is beautiful and it’s amazing to see what an SUV like that can get away with performance-wise. Porsche never disappoints
The Camaro moment is right up there with the guy dragging a log in that old Lamborghini Huracan video. Especially with the foreshadowing almost instantly coming true.
Kinda with you on that. Still not sure why the T doesn’t have the full 315hp from the EA888 in the Golf R. Maybe parts availability? If this had that Golf R performance numbers I’d be much more tempted.
@@senorfreeze4662 It doesn’t have the full power because then it would be much closer to the S, also it’s cheaper for Porsche to keep the same engine from the Macan without touching it. And I can bet you that if you put this thing on a dyno it has atleast 20hp more than advertised, just like most Porsche’s.
63k and you don't even get the EA888 from the S3/Golf R? At that price I would be looking at the BMW X3 M40i or Audi SQ5 and add the available handling options on either one.
Too many self proclaimed enthusiastic drivers feel more comfortable than they should behind the wheel. It’s tons of solid metal rolling forward very quickly on a set of rubber disks with a relatively small and fragile contact patch. The fun turns into tears in the blink of an eye.
Just bumped into your channel👌🤩. However, I disagree with your verdict on the Macan T vs. the S model: you forgot to mention the SIX cylinders in the S.
The Macan T is doing the sports car thing of making you pay more for less. But the Macan isn't a sports car. Just get the S for the relaxed engine and the tuning potential and the smoothness.
I just picked up a CPO 23 T... Fully loaded, just no ptv and air suspension... This will be a daily and commuter.. so the luxury options are more important than the motor right now..
After owning a base S and living with a base 4banger loaner for a month, I could not WAIT to get back in the S. I started to thing the Macan was no fun and wondered why I had purchased one in the first place. The 3.0L just has more usable power down low and so much more response. Granted, the 4pot was more powerful than I expected, the 6pot is just more enjoyable day to day. It’s smoother, sounds WAY better and the power matches the chassis better. The 4pot just didn’t feel special to me. (All said, I have. 997.2 c2s in the garage, so the thrill meter gets exercised.) Final thoughts, a great chassis never makes up for a bland engine for a daily driver. However, A bland engine at high revs in the twisties CAN be fun paired with a great chassis. Example; 944/Miata. Do I want to daily either of those. Nah!
If o-60 in 6 Sec is fast enough, then theses the car for you. All models of the new Macan have the performance level of the previous model's next higher model (GTS is like old Turbo with performance pack). I had a Turbo and it was best SUV ever. It handled like a sports car. I'd expect the T do do as well or better.
I’ve had a good amount of seat time in a base Macan and while it felt lackluster on the Highway, it was great in the canyons. The 30-60mph punch is a lot stronger than the 60-90mph.
@@AlexHartfordI'm a huge fan of the APR stage 2 tune. I don't think it's available anymore sadly. The only negative is having to go back to factory every 2 years for smog.
I bought an S model and I've got buyer's remorse. Without raging acceleration on par with the the M40i a crossover like this is pretty boring, even with good handling. The car isn't really whisper quiet at speed, but you still can't hear the engine note in sport mode like in the BMWs. At low speed it's all turbo whistle/hiss, which again BMW controls a lot better so you can hear that glorious inline 6. Not to mention the brake squeal.
That's a terrible question because they have no need for it. They would never be in a position to need this. There are millions of people who want an SUV crossover who give very little shits about engines.
I have a ‘17 S and love the car. Except for the engine and the TCC oil leak. Almost want the 4cyl for the better reliability than the 6cyl engine. Idk if Porsche ironed out all the issues with their sixes even now

Either dogging down low or the turbo checking out at 4500 - stuff like that. I'm sure it's impressive in its own right, but that's just something that would get under my skin. I'd rather have less power and have it all over the place.
Like the look Zach and Matt you're lookin fresh as well.
5:30 wow... I screamed.... I can't believe you guys didn't freak out. Jesus....
12:40 The 718 base engine definitely makes more power than this, but slightly less torque. With the car being way lighter idk how you can feel like this is more powerful.
I would love to see a flat 4 in this.
This thing with a forged engine, a big turbo and tune would be the rally car of the decade
That's what I was thinking. EA888 engines can be built to 600whp. Would be awesome to see something like it
@@gf66620 Especially with the PDK, it's going to launch like mad and it would be completely reliable
@@fullsendsimracing Just throw some dodson clutch pack and be happy hahahahaha
The two takes are king
Been with TST since 2010. Remember GTI vs. Mazdaspeed 3 autocross? Congratulations on 1M subs, Matt.
Haven't driven the base Macan, but the new Q5 with pretty much the same engine. If I'm going for the 4 cyl I rather do that with tech/comfort options instead of the T package at the same price
the macan build quality is way better and so resale value
The Q5 doesn't drive nearly as well as the Macan even with the same engine. Drove them back to back, even the SQ5.
@@stevemartegani interesting. I found the previous SQ5 to be better than the previous Macan S. Felt quicker off the line and interior was a lot nicer. Macau’s PDK felt clunky around town. More cargo space in the Audi as well.
@@biznatcho7 Did you drive them on twisty back roads?
@@biznatcho7 PDK is more responsive but not as smooth..
If you can find a pristine MK7 for sale anywhere, the MK8 is ruined.
Nice review thanks, i prefer the diesel S insane torque its addictive
(Glad to see you agree at 16:45)
question is, do you go with the latest macan t, or get a certified pre-owned older Macan GTS
Used prices are near new Macan prices now due to the crazy market...
That’s a relief, I’ve had mine for 2 weeks then saw this video and was like oh no are they going to tell me I made a mistake
Can make out the camaro's license plate as it almost caused an accident. Would be a shame if this video found it's way to law enforcement.
Good point!! Maybe they should not have filmed it
You’re being sarcastic, right? 😀
I have a 21' Macan GTS very happy with it.
I wonder why they didn’t pull the engine from the Boxster?
"It sounds pretty good!"
No it doesn't Matt, come on! Proud owner of a MK7 GTI, and the *only* thing I'd change about that car is how it sounds.
the porsche sounds better than the Volkswagen
Good to know! I had this in my previous A3 and was NOT a fan of the exhaust note
Ah yes the Camaro on camera! I’ve been waiting for this
Good judgement call on that Camaro.
I could live with the look alone.
Typical of Porsche to make buyers pay extra for the fun experience. 🙄
Skip to 5:20 for the Camaro
I wouldn't get the S because the GTS is the way to go. But ultimately, Macan T would be my daily driver for the reasons you shared.
Matt: This video is brought to you by UpRoad.
Me: What's uproad?
Matt: Not much what's up with you.
The Camaro moment is right up there with the guy dragging a log in that old Lamborghini Huracan video. Especially with the foreshadowing almost instantly coming true.
For that kind of money, it could at least have the same power output as the Golf R or S3.
A lot of that money is R&D. You can't get a better crossover in that price range.
63k and you don't even get the EA888 from the S3/Golf R? At that price I would be looking at the BMW X3 M40i or Audi SQ5 and add the available handling options on either one.
So it has a 30 thousand dollar car engine?! 🥴
Upgraded suspension, and an easily tunable engine? I like it.
Too many self proclaimed enthusiastic drivers feel more comfortable than they should behind the wheel. It’s tons of solid metal rolling forward very quickly on a set of rubber disks with a relatively small and fragile contact patch. The fun turns into tears in the blink of an eye.
You could always tune it pretty easy to get an e888 over 400hp 👀
Nah!
Matt, quick WRIST watch check! What are you wearing???
If o-60 in 6 Sec is fast enough, then theses the car for you. All models of the new Macan have the performance level of the previous model's next higher model (GTS is like old Turbo with performance pack). I had a Turbo and it was best SUV ever. It handled like a sports car. I'd expect the T do do as well or better.
That Camaro is MARYLAND
If you look at the badge you will, in fact, see that it is a real Porsche.
That shares a chassis with my Audi 😬
@@oc0dyc but is it a real Audi?
I mean it’s an SQ5 so… maybe? 😂
I’ve had a good amount of seat time in a base Macan and while it felt lackluster on the Highway, it was great in the canyons. The 30-60mph punch is a lot stronger than the 60-90mph.
That 30-60 punch is what you'll use 30-60 times everyday.
@@Edgar_Allan_Poe_50 Yep, I think it’s a great overall package. Maybe a tune would make it feel more confident on the freeway.
@@AlexHartfordI'm a huge fan of the APR stage 2 tune. I don't think it's available anymore sadly. The only negative is having to go back to factory every 2 years for smog.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Yes it's a real Porsche...
I'm looking forward to the Macan EV ⚡🤘
I don’t get why people tend to refer to the Macan as a soccer mom’s SUV. I think it’s a great compromise if you can’t have a Cayman or Boxster.
Where was this filmed? Looks like the area either going from LA to Santa Monica or someplace
In San Diego? Maybe near the racetrack for the horses ?
great video. but whats with the sunglasses for the entire drive including closing thoughts? little weird
Only question that matters in my book... would either of you two spend 60k on a 4 cylinder suv? Good or not.
Hell no.
Fuck that, it's gotta be a turbocharged V6 or V8 at the least
Might as well get x3 m40i. Much better engine and sounds awesome and more tech. Handling is good too.
All of the
That's a terrible question because they have no need for it. They would never be in a position to need this. There are millions of people who want an SUV crossover who give very little shits about engines.
What watch is Matt wearing? It looks rad
Just add a pano roof...where do I sign
Which model is better the turbo or the gts
If you left your lane, you didn’t win. It’s like track limits, you’re DQ’d if you cross the line.
Btw that cross-canyon shot was pretty sweet
very cool sunglasses, where can I get them?
I have a ‘17 S and love the car. Except for the engine and the TCC oil leak. Almost want the 4cyl for the better reliability than the 6cyl engine. Idk if Porsche ironed out all the issues with their sixes even now
which watch is Matt wearing?
