Chorus:
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys
Merry Christmas to everyone listening to this classic in 2023. This song is just as revelant today as it was when it was released back in the 70s.
The Kniks
Thank you
And how. Bidenomics has us all learning how to survive from the folks who survived being under class in the 60’s.
Not Christmas without hearing this and Christmas wrapping by the waitresses
@@danneilson7768 Agreed, I also add, Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC and The seasons upon us by the Dropkick Murphys
How can one band do "Waterloo Sunset" and then this? God Bless the Kinks!
One of the few christmas songs that is actually good, not overplayed, or super sappy.
The Kniks
"Good"? It's _great._
"but remember the kids that got nothing, while you're drinking down your wine..." hits harder and harder EVERY TIME
No matter what era, the Kinks are stone cold badass.
Right on!!
I saw them 3 times live!
Better than the Beatles!!
Yep
All Christmas music is bollocks, except this.
This sums it all up: "Have yourself a Merry Merry Christmas, have yourself a good time, but remember the kids who got nothing, while you're drinking down your wine".
Thank you Ray for writing one of the best Christmas songs EVER!
Allen Montgomery WOW! What a classic I LOVE this song and have yourself a MERRY CHRISTMAS too..
And for actually being the band who would, could and did ''beat you up if you made them annoyed" and called that a punch up, as if it was fun, but didn't hit Women!
It really is the pinnacle moment of the song and sums up the message beautifully! That and “give all the toys to the little rich
boys”! What good are toys when you can’t even afford food!?
I think that you mean: The Greatest Christmas Song Ever.
Thank you Ray, best Christmas song ever. Merry Christmas in splendid isolation.
Merry Christmas to everyone listening in 2020.
Merry Christmas
Your the best
Happy holidays mate
Merry Christmas to you, Donnie.
to you as well friend
Only The Kinks can make a Christmas song badass
And still make it sound sweet and innocent in between.
Keith Richards did a pretty badass version of Run Run Rudolph around the same time
You got that right 😂
And still give it genuine Christmas spirit. Ray Davies is a genius.
And Weird All Yankovic with his "The Night Santa Went Crazy song.
The greatest Christmas song ever. Not only is it punk but it's actually got a really nice meaning behind it.
I agree! Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys is another great Christmas song!
it's the second best for me behind making Christmas from Nightmare before Christmas
Problem with that is The Kinks were too good to be considered Punk, they all knew how to play their instruments.
@@dukecraig2402
Wow somehow I forgot this song and it just popped up on my recommendations.
I'm glad it did and you're absolutely right.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Merry Christmas there St. Nick🎅🎅🎅
In 1967 when psychedelia and flower-power was in full-swing, the Kinks were singing about kitchen sinks leaking and general working class struggles -- very much the stuff that the British punk groups would be on about in 1977. Here we are in '77 and the Kinks release a Christmas single that has all the energy and fire of the Pistols, Clash, Jam and it's that same real world concern. Ray Davies never wrote songs about purple unicorns, pinball playing messiahs or tales from topographic oceans, he kept it real from the very beginning and always stayed relevant. (Well, mostly.. some of the KInks' concept albums of the early '70s were more than a bit bloated and self-indulgent, but other than that..)
Covered it CHRISTMAS CRACKERS THE KINKS !
Why was psychedelia too good for the limey pricks?
@@therespectedlex9794 The limey pricks had already done psychedelia back in 1965 with 'See My Friends' -- one of the earliest uses of an Indian drone type feel. So they'd already been there and done that. Also, 'Lazy Old Sun' off the 'Something Else' album has a great dreamy, trippy feel. Not unlike Syd's Pink Floyd.
@@NewFalconerRecords Good! But how about doing some more.
I loved the concept albums - 700 songs in their catalog- GSTK….
Played this song for my 8th grade class today, didn’t know how they’d react. They loved it. Faith in humanity restored.
LoL 😆
Haha I played it for my 8th grade class on Friday. I have been playing this for them every year near Christmas since the fifth grade.
Unfortunately, the loved it "ironically"
Im in 8th grade yet I love this song along with other classics.

The only Christmas song I'd listen to all year round..

Is that Gilles Gratton's mask
My mistake, Luongo right?
@@davidthune2414 Yes indeed it is. Now, I'm not quite old enough to remember watching him play. But ever since I saw a picture of him in his mask in an old hockey book I used to read as a kid, I've always thought that it was a cool looking mask. One of the coolest designs I've ever seen imho...
@@davidthune2414 Nope. You were right the first time. It's Gilles Gratton's. Luongo had a real cool mask when he played with the Panthers too, though...
Listening in September 2020, best xmas song to listen to all year!
The Kinks made a punk song about Christmas.
Wow, I love them even more now.
They're the band with a song about virtually everything!
@@mollyfrom5556
Yes that's true.
I just subscribed to you for your comment. I Love when younger music lovers find great songs. Have a great holiday.
The Fairytale of New York is probably tied with this as far as punk Christmas songs go

I'll have to check it out and thank you for the recommendation
As a kid we were poor, no Mom, at a flea market Dad gave me 5 dollars & I bought some old albums, The Kinks you really got me, the Dave Clarke Five, Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture, so even though I had heard the Beatles more on the radio, the kinks was the first album I bought, guess I was about 10 or 11 yrs old. This is a great Christmas song for those who adore the Kinks & their brand of music. A Classic!
Tchaikovsky?! Damn, even at young age you had great taste in music. You rock!
@Big Bubba ok boomer
@Big Bubba 47 likes, one Asshole response.
@Dominic Brady oh, don't worry, he'll hear all the singing (or maybe the one-of-a-kind pops and scratches on this impressive 5 dollar album list), his heart will grow 3 sizes and he'll have the strength of 10 trolls plus 2, and he'll spring for the biggest goose on display and send it over to Bob Cratchit's house. Trust me, it happens every year right around this time...
@Big Bubba can you say insensitive? Dimwit.
how is this not a Christmas classic
I had no idea The Kinks went punk with zero friction.
Truly Britain's most versatile band.
Best thing. This ain't a gimmick. Not a novelty song, or even a Christmas song. A pure kinks song.
This song always lifted my Christmas spirit when I was a dirt poor single mother at Christmas time.
When this was released in 1977, unemployment was rampant in Britain. The pound was shit. They were in the middle of "The Troubles," and punk was just getting off the ground.
This Xmas masterpiece captures all of that in 3+ minutes! GENIUS!!
And, in hindsight, it's been all downhill since. The idea that things were bad was simply right wing propaganda to weaken labour unions.
The Kinks.....in the top ten rock bands of all time.....the truth will set you free.....
Walter Mameli I will said top five
A very merry Christmas to everyone listening to this ageless classic
My father had the best taste in music of anyone I ever knew. This was played especially for me & my little brother every Xmas morning after gifts. We loved it! Made us both rowdy as hell! Thanks, Dad, it was & still remains my favorite Christmas "carol".
That's awesome,
What year was that?
I always played it for my boy around the holiday season ,
Never thought about playing it Christmas morning ,lol
To late now he's 20
I once mistook the 1 on the clock for the 7 and woke up my dad ... it was the longest Christmas morning ever. I was 6 or 7 years old. Now 57 it's one of my fondest memories.💖

It's Not Christmas until I play Father Christmas by the Kinks.
I nominate this for the #1 Christmas song this year. Do I have a second?
Essentially I'd go with that sentiment but I'll always have a spot in my heart for "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses
Hang Myself from the Tree by The Vandals is always #1.

The Pogues - The Fairytale of New York.
And of course No Presents for Christmas by the Danish singer King Diamond✌👍
I saw Thew Kinks perform this when they played a few NYC-area gigs to promote the single. Ray gave me one of thew most gracious phone interviews I ever had in my radio days. And he and Dave had to be separated by security during the show, so it was win-win-win!
That's fantastic!!. Lolz.

I have never heard of this,,,, 2023,,, and found this gem,,, better late than never.
Happy Christmas 2023
It's not Christmas until my neighbor's hear The Kinks take on it!
This song is full-on punk rock, and yet...
That xylophone solo is one of the most Christmasy things I've ever heard.

Merry Christmas to everyone listening in 2021
Merry Christmas
It's not Christmas without this song at maximum volume!...Thank you Kinks, and Merry Christmas 2021!
Saw the Kinks live countless times late 70s through their last American concert in NY in 1995. One of a kind band. Ray was in the same class with Lennon/McCartney for his songwriting...maybe even better. This song is has been a part of every Xmas for me since it came out. Wrapping Christmas by the Waitresses is another of my holiday favorites .
Number three on my list. Right behind The Waitresses, Christmas Wrapping and The Royal Guardsman, Snoopy's Christmas.
This song will forever be in my heart and put me in that Christmas spirit because of my dad.
Since I was little, he would play hard rock all the time and this is just one of those Christmas songs that is timeless, nostalgic, hard, has an attitude, just pure badass and at the same time manages to be light hearted.

Listening to this today on what would’ve been my Uncle John’s 70th birthday! He loved this song. Xo
It kind of makes me sad that there are millions of people in the world that celebrate Christmas and have never heard/appreciated this song and the awesome meaning behind it.
Ashamed to say I’m a massive kinks fan and never heard this. How is this never played on the radio one of the best christmas songs i’ve ever heard.
Merry Christmas everyone. God Bless the Kinks
The radios recycle the same three or four kink songs, that’s it. All day and all night, you really got me, and Lola…… very under appreciated band compared to some of their contemporaries
@@QueenetBowie I don’t know the audience of Kinks fans as far as young people are concerned but i’m 21 and they are one of my favourite bands. I was talking to a record shop owner for about an hour on the kinks and his eyes lit up, we were talking about Village green, Wonderboy/Days all their gems. The good thing about the kinks for me is that not alot of people I know listen to them so they are like my own secret. They don’t know what they’re missing!

This song never ever gets old
Ray Davies was just a freaken genius the way he could get a message across, but still not lose the quality of the song.
This great tune & John Lennon's Happy Xmas(War is Over) are my 2 favorite Xmas songs. I love the way they remind us that there are many suffering in this big world who aren't blessed materially even with the least bit during the Holidays.
I can relate because I come from humble beginnings, but always appreciate my parents for giving myself & all my brothers the love that was better than any gift money could buy.
Heard this song yesterday for the very first time. I have never it on the radio, where the same old boring Xmas songs are played ad nauseum.
It is my new favourite Christmas song.
The Kinks are the greatest rock and roll band of all time. HANDS DOWN.
I'm with you, almost. To me, the Who are the greatest live band (and the Kinks second) but the Kinks are the greatest recording band (and the Who second)!

This is the best xmas song ever written or sung. A lot of life lessons in the song for our present day kids. When i was a kid i knew 3 or 4 kids that didn't get anything for xmas cause their dad was a drunk or spent all the money on the horses.
