I think it's easy to feel intimidated but that doesn't necessarily mean other people are 'Intimidating'. It's no one else's job to make you feel less insecure...that's an issue you need to work on. Also from experience It seems that people at the gym respect consistency, If you regularly go to the gym you will end up seeing the same people every week. You'll feel less intimidated and more comfortable over time. It's like starting a new job or moving to a new town, just focus on getting over the hump! ^-^
Yup. This is the main thing. I work out at a pretty good globogym and 90% of people's issues and self-inflicted/self-imagined. Gym judgment (that is actually verbalized) and other harassment is actually quite rare (as someone who was a weak/over fat male at least). Beginners tend to psych themselves out. Once you get used to it, it becomes much more comfortable, as you mention.
@@TheGreektrojan but there is a lot of hate towards women for not lifting heavy weight or regarding their outfits under every type of fitness content. Since I started researching fitness content I’m bombarded with hateful content. It’s not surprising if women don’t feel comfortable going to the gym because we’re judged for what and why we train.
Yup! Same experience here. Plus, people in the gym seem more keen on helping you cleaning your form, giving you tips on how to use weights and machines... Gym as a whole is a pretty wholesome environment. Granted, there are a few jerks but they usually don't last long.

I LOVE seeing fat/skinny/weak people in the gym. That's someone that's doing something good for them physically and mentally, trying to improve. It's exciting to see it, and I try to smile at them and acknowledge them so they're comfortable and stick with it. I try to give a simple suggestion on form or something once to see if they're receptive, and tell them they can ask me questions any time they see me.

So true! Signed up for four trial lessons at a local MMA gym and gave up after the second lesson. I felt very unwelcome and unwanted there, especially by the trainers.

Most of them in this video, but also I've had it be they feel unwanted because some of the men don't feel comfortable going beyond very light in sparing with a women or feel they can't get as a good a practice in (for context this was doing ogoshi with men over 150ibs heavier than her also sometime a foot taller) because if they resisted more the women couldn't really do much. One of my most enduring memories of training at the gym (for over a decade) was when I reached a PR in my 20-rep squat workout. This PR was one of the finest achievements I had ever accomplished in my life, as it took over a decade to reach it. And what was happening in this gym whilst I completed my set? A clique of 3 guys were laughing at me. They just thought it would be funny to give me a hard time while I squatted 265 pounds for 20 reps at a body weight of 190 pounds and 5’10” in height. Anyone who has ever done a serious set of 20 rep squats knows that it requires a fair amount of concentration, and it is not an easy exercise. A few years later, I surpassed my PR of 265x20 and today my PR is 290x20. I reached this PR in my basement where there was no one else in the entire building, no one to cheer me on, and certainly no one to laugh at me. As someone who is not blessed with great genetics (or even average genes), this is one of the finest accomplishments in my entire life.
Congratulations on the pr, I faced something similar got a home gym one of the best decisions I have made. Sometimes I do question myself would I progress faster if I had found the right crew and the right gym, totally possible but the accomplishments in a home gym are truly ones own.
honesly that sounds like you are either making it up or exaggerating badly. I mean why on Earth would they even laugh? Were they high or you farted during one of your squats? Or maybe they weren't even laughing at you. It just doesn't make sense to me man.
Things like these are considered toxic in my country. Only a group of 8 year olds would be so immature as to laugh at the expense of someone and not realize they are being watched.
I will say smaller, more specialized gyms > globo, corporate gyms specifically because of the atmosphere. The gym I belong to now caters to powerlifters; I’ve never met nicer, more affable people in my time as a gym goer. Many are only too willing to help with form checks, cues, advice, etc. Support a local gym, if you are able. The communities within are generally very welcoming.
To each their own. As you said smaller gyms are more social (makes sense). But being antisocial guy I am, who want to FKING WORK OUT AND NOT CHAT in a gym, I like bigger ones more. Nobody knows noone and we all are there just to get some work done, that's all. As Alan said: Go to the gym because of training there, everything else should be just by-product.
I was going to a globo gym, but left it when everything shut down. After I got vaccinated I joined the gym at the junior college with my wife because they have a pool, and we could get a family rate. Plus it's right across the street from me. The culture is so much different! It's a lot of student athletes, so nobody cares about making noise. Many more Olympic lifters and powerlifters. I'm often the oldest person in the room, and I'm the outsider because everyone else knows each other from class. A lot of the members spend a crazy amount of time in the gym because it's basically where they hang out with their friends. That's a little frustrating because they'll stake a piece of equipment that they're not actively using for an inordinate amount of time.
The final concern regarding “Not enough female members” and prospective female members feeling discouraged because of that, runs parallel to another problem within exercise and training, and that’s people Gendering certain exercises. Strength training and muscle growth is just that, and people get so caught thinking that certain exercises are for men and others for women, there are no gendered exercises. Women have every right and reason to bench and overhead press, just as men shouldn’t avoid hip thrusts. Every exercise has its place under particular goals and conditions and should be welcomed by everyone
I reckon the ONE machine blokes avoid most while training is the Leg Adductor/Abductor machine (AKA the "Good Girl / Bad Girl Machine"). For whatever reason people have gendered an exercise which really benefits stability and mobility. Everyone is welcome in the gym & everyone is welcome to exercise how they please. Nice to see platforms like Instagram encouraging women to weight train.
@@Someone-xj3zg It was a guy who came up with the hip thrust. He heard girls talking about football players' butts and he had a pancake butt. His name is Bret Contreras, btw. Watch his interview on Mind Pump.
That's a marketing thing because they market cardio resistance to women. I am one of those women who goes into the free weight area. Right now, I'm working on my dead lift.
Those tight knit communities is the only real downside for me and training at home. I’ve been able to visit some great gyms and the family type atmosphere is one of the big things I pick up on.

I've heard a lot of friends say that they won't go to the gym because they think people are all "meatheads." Like yeah okay, maybe that might be true sometimes, but in my experience I've never found that to be the case. People are usually friendly, and just want other people to succeed. Okay I've seen a little drama, but once or twice over the space of years and years.
When I was about 14 or so (and about 5'3 and 95lbs) I started going to this small bodybuilder gym because it was convenient by where my mom would work in the afternoons part time. We were both a bit apprehensive because there were a bunch of big intense dudes in there, but everyone ended up being super nice and helping this skinny little guy learn how to work out. They thought it was cool to have a newbie and taught me etiquette and how to be safe with all of the equipment.
@@SirSketchable noobs asking for help typically gets me excited. You can help them avoid beginner mistakes, and help cultivate them like they're a little flower. 6 months later, you notice their gains more than they do, filling you with pride!
Lots are meatheads because they love the gym and want to talk about it all the time, including explaining things to newbies. There are tons of friendly and helpful meatheads, but I get how that's not what it seems like on the surface.
In my experience, the “meatheads” are usually the most helpful. Because if there’s one thing they like more than working out, it’s talking about working out lol.
Meatheads get a bad rap. Plenty of them look and sound exactly like the stereotype, but bring positivity and encouragement to everyone at the gym. _Be a benevolent gym bro, the world needs it._
Awesome point! They look and sound like the stereotype and are immediately judged as such. Yet the ones judging normally do so without a single interaction with one of them/us. Yeah, there's always gonna be a dickhead or two (there is in every group), however, just about every meathead will be approachable, helpful, and more than likely go out of their way to provide assistance. That's been my experience on both sides of the coin. Edit: shitty spelling...sorry
ive been aproached once by a dude to ask me how much was i pulling (weighted pullups) and i told him. he just put a weird face (like a yikes face) and went back to where he was. what was even that lol.
I'm THAT woman. I've been coming to the same gym since 2010: I never talked to anyone for longer than 3 minutes, I made 0 friends, I helped out or gave advice to, like, 3 people who asked "hey, how do you use this machine?" and I gave a spot a total of ONE times. I come to the gym to work out in order to get closer to my goals; I usually come in straight from work so I'm mentally exhausted and have had contact with people for 8+ hours, and I just want to CRUSH the weights and do my own thing. With my headphones on, because I happen to prefer my music to the gym's music. during my workout, I can't see your technique, I can't see what you're doing, how much you're lifting, or what you look like, or the clothes you're wearing, or anything like that. If you catch me looking at you, it's because I was hoping to use the workstation you're in; and well, you're in it - so I'll be doing something else. But most probably I'm not looking at you at all, but at myself, in the mirror behind you, trying to gauge if my own form is still good, or if I'm ending this set. SOMETIMES, I do admit I am guilty of noticing a particularly old, a particularly fat or a particularly disabled individual joining the gym. I do so because I HUGELY respect such people for taking incentive and actually coming to work out, and I DO sneak a few glances at them because their effort truly motivates me; especially at times when I feel like a pussy who just wants to NOT do this workout. Yes, about 95% of that gym's members are men, and aside of maybe 1 stupid comment in 2 years, I've never had any problems with any of the members. What I rate as stupid comment, if you're wondering, is: "are you male or female? because you look like a man". I can't give you more examples becausec honestly that's the only one I remember. What did I reply to that? Nothing, I had my headphones on and pretended not to hear it.
Ha, that's so me! The gym I go to has a lot of regular female members, so I definitely don't stand out. I come, work my ass out and go home. The only unpleasant thing that happened to me so far was when another lady I've never seen before said to me something like "oh I see that you are excercising while pregnant", while I wasn't. I am just a little overweight and I have this type of physique that my belly pops out (I am very well aware that I do look pregnant, and it happens regularly that someone assumes I am). She was very embarassed when I told her that, and she also should be, because why do you comment on a stranger's looks?! I never do that. Otherwise, my gym is my happy place and I am glad it has survived the corona shut-down.
Suppose Jesus DID NOT DIE on the Cross and rise from the dead. What would this mean for humans? It would mean absolutely no one would go to Heaven, why? Because God is Holy & will not coexist forever with sinners. Are you a sinner? have you ever lied, stolen anything, spoken abusively to or about someone, Swore, Blasphemed God’s Holy name, lusted after the opposite sex, had premarital sex, cheated, hated someone…? So all humans will be condemned to hell for their sins. But thank God out of His overflowing love, sent Jesus to die on the Cross and rise from the dead. Now we can get into Heaven by Repenting (stop doing is sinful and start being Holy-James 4:7) & Belief in Jesus as your Lord & Saviour. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
The way I got over my fears of 1) being judged 2) don't know how to use equipment 3) there being few other women was by going to a Beginners Barbell class each week for months. I learnt how to use the equipment and a bunch of movements to do with the barbell and had other women (and men) in the class with me. I don't see beginner barbell classes happening at many gyms and wish they were more common.
Have you ever lied, lusted sexually, disrespected parents, stolen, thought bad thoughts, hated someone, sinned sexually (fornication, Adultery …) etc All humans have sinned in thought, word or deed. Therefore, none of us are good and able to get into Heaven and will be justly judged and sent to eternity in Hell! But God out of His love sent his son Jesus (also God in Human flesh) to die on the cross for our sins and rise again from the dead (nobody can do that only God). Jesus said if you Repent of your sins and put your complete trust in Him for your salvation, you’ll have eternal life, given to you as a gift (this message is not to be ignored; seek God today). Your thoughts? John 14: 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Intimidation is usually in our minds. A few years back I was travelling and paid a few days pass in a gym with very serious lifters. On top of that, there was an ongoing seminar on how to model in contests, so the place was packed with top, big people. I felt intimidated but still gave it a try. At one point, I got in a bit of trouble with the little weight I was using. A couple of guys helped me and then spent a few minutes giving me tips, spotting, etc.
2:31 thank you. This is important. I think most people don’t want to be bothered at the gym. They want to get in and get out. Gym is meant for business, not for making friends

We all need a gym bro like this man, that's #1. Number two, he is SO right. If you're going to the gym for anything other than bettering yourself, you're already at a loss
Something that was a revelation to me when I started - I thought everyone was judging my technique, that I had very few plates on the bar, that I wasn't reaching depth etc. But when I looked at other people I just thought "well actually I have no idea what their program is". To me it looked like they could be warming up, or doing a specific short ROM exercise deliberately (like pin squats), or they are working around an injury. I realised that if that's what I thought then it's probably what other people think too.
Most people are just watching each other to learn to technique tips or to be there just in case. If I someone trying a weight that seems excessive ill just stand by until I see the first rep and then go on with my routine. We all have the same goals...be a better version of yourself.
honestly Alan, its been amazing watching you age into one of the men I look up to most in this world. your character and the care you put into helping others in the gym with lessons that work just as well outside the gym has been amazing. I am so glad I found your channel.

Having trained at a number of different gyms, large and small, I've never encountered a "toxic" culture. One or two assholes, sure, but there's always been a ton of friendly and encouraging people, even the "meatheads." I've never felt judged. This may sound harsh but I think a lot of people either repeat these stereotypes or come up with these "reasons" to self-justify their lack of physical activity or their insecurity. These people need to get over themselves and just start putting in the work. No one else in there cares enough to look at and judge them, if they notice them at all they'll probably respect them for starting the journey.
True. I used to go to a gym with people with roid rage, snobbish people ,douchebags, but mostly they didn't give me any reason to feel judged or behaved rudely with. If you just focus on yourself, nobody gives a rats a$$ about you. If you are doing good and lifting heavy or are shredded or really good in cardio, they will respect you and treat you well, but they won't treat you like $hit if you are out of shape or weak or insecure.
@Simon Middlemast that's just awful, I'm very sorry she experienced that. I really don't know why people feel the need to put down others, especially when they're trying to improve themselves.
I remember the first time I ever went to a gym. I had no idea what I was doing and I'm sure I looked like a fool trying to figure out how to use machines. There was a group of younger dudes that kept laughing and hooting at me. "Are you lost, girl?" I canceled the membership asap. I have been at my current gym for almost 2 years now. At 11:07, as a female, I can relate to this. At first I was intimidated because of 2 reasons, 1) no other girls in the weight area (not the cardio, if any they were at the squad area), and 2) seeing most of the guys do heavier weights than I could possibly do at the time. Eventually I got over it because I hate doing cardio more than been embarrassed, but I can give some advice. 1st, if you can, bring a friend, they don't have to be there all the time or do weights. They can be there for a little while, doesn't take much time to start feeling comfortable, and once you do, it will never disappear. 2nd, there are girls that do weights, just need to pay more attention, and normally, most will arrive at the same time you saw them last time. You don't even need to talk to them, just try to arrive around the same time they do. 3rd, I might have some people hate me for this but, if you still don't feel comfortable, take the weights(dumbells) from the rack to somewhere you do. Most ladies, in my experience, start with 5lbs or 10lbs dumbells, most guys I see don't really use those often. As long as you put them back were they belong when finished, you should be fine. Trust me, there some guys that just leave them where they were working out and don't put the weights back. 4th, doing dumbells first is a great way to build confidence at the weights area, best part is that you can move them around to where you like. You have to get the dumbells and leave them at the racks, so it will help you familiarize with the area, you will eventually feel comfortable enough to use other equipment like barbell to do compound movements.
Excellent comment, I felt intimidated when I first got into lifting weights, so I started with only using dumbbells, and as I got more comfortable with that it was easier to move onto using a barbell. It does suck as a lady that there is usually a time when some gym bro tries to give you unsolicited advice, or makes just a weird/creepy comment to you about your body or lifting heavier weights, but I have to say that’s been more the exception than the rule, most guys have been friendly/helpful. And if some dude is really making you uncomfortable I’d say most gym owners are glad to intervene
I know a female who felt intimidate about lifting weights and the best thing she did was hire an instructor to teach her how to do bodybuilding compound movements (variations in bench, squat, rows, and overhead press). Her form now is better than half the guys in the free weight area. I have to stress though that women have to look for and specifically ask for bodybuilding movements. I've seen many instructors, for some reason, start teaching females functional movements instead and spend most of their time on the mat than the free weight area.
Excellent comment. Sometimes it takes a while to understand what you like in the gym too. My wife (before she met me) has been to the gym once and she got soo intimidated, she never went there again. Mind you this is a woman only gym. Apparently the staff were the toxic ones. She’s a big girl so they made comments about her size and how she should be lifting more weight for her size. After we got married. I had a talk with my gym owner (who ironically looks just like Allan 😂 but with tattoos) she found she likes strongman. On her first competition she placed 3rd She just won strongwoman of the year Australia award and the most inspirational strongwoman Australia award and our little gym ( it’s called Stronger in Nowra NSW) won the gym of the year award.
God understands that young men want to get buff and strong (Proverbs 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength). One of the secrets to having good strength is the following (Proverbs 31:3 Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings.); so, stay away from fornication, pornography, touching women, lust, drunkenness, drugs, lying, stealing etc. But you can make all the gains in the world and lose allot of it weeks after you stop training. shit soon you will be comfortable enough to start rearranging the place, no joke i see people carrying the flat benches halfway across my gym to accommodate their workouts every week
Preach Brother! Many younger people avoid me at the gym because I have an intense look on my face that tends to frighten people. I'm actually a nice guy but I have to be super nice guy all day long at the office. When I get to the gym, I allow the beast to get loose for 1 hour a day to keep my sanity. I will admit that because of this, I don't get stupid or unnecessary questions this way, so I guess it isn't all bad!!
Funny enough I’ve noticed powerlifters in my gym are more friendly and understanding than bodybuilders I dont dislike bodybuilders but for some reason the ones I see seem to have some kind of complex they do one set and start walking around the gym getting up in everyone’s space and flexing being loud and whatnot I love it when the power lifters do like double there weight and you can see the anger and anguish in their eyes lol
The main reason I ended with my gym and made my own in the garage (hell of an investment but payed off already) is because I occupied the only power rack in the gym for an hour. You can imagine how people loved me every time I came there...

I've always loved the idea of joining a small gym but I also do NOT like having conversations while I'm working out, so I'm torn on that one. Small gyms do have incredible community and they also often have way cooler equipment than the corporate gyms but I'm one of those people who isn't in the gym trying to make friends. I do love to see people I recognize and give them a wave or a wink though.
Ever since I started following you a year ago I forced my self to the gym and get over my insecurities. I looked at your how to vids and have gotten much stronger than I could have imagined! I am 36 and feel better than when I was 21!

Hey Alan - I was among those afraid of the gym for years. I was always a good athlete (soccer and real decent distance runner), but the gym felt off limits to me. Your form videos finally got me over that hurdle about 2.5 years ago. Turns out, I absolutely love squatting and it's changed my life for the better. I really appreciate you. Thank you and I hope others have benefited from your videos/have overcome their fear of the gym as I have!

This is a great video. Everyone has a different reason why they go to the gym. Some want to become like Arnold. Some want to powerlift. Some want to get in better shape. Some (like me) just want to exercise. I've been lifting for over 25 years and I credit my shape to the gym. I make my exercise schedule fun, which makes it easier to stay consistent. My entire goal when I walk into the gym is to get a little burn or pump, then repeat the next day. If I am really tired, I might skip some of the more demanding exercises and do them another day. I never want to dread going to the gym. Instead, I want to make it fun and relaxing. I know my routine won't work if you want to look like Arnold. But it keeps me in shape and that's all I care about.
I definitely see why some people are intimidated. I'm not personally, I just don't like dealing with assholes which are incredibly common in bigger/corporate gyms.
Lone female in the free weight area - never had an issue. I feel safer there than in the enclosed "women's" space on the other side of the wall. Other there, some creepy guy could walk in the door shut it and keep you from escaping, while in the free weight area you can just run off any direction because there are no walls and multiple exits
I just don't like being around people when I want to enjoy myself, so I will never work out in a gym. Either in a private home gym or outside in the woods.
It's always easier to shift the blame on outside factors than to be honest with oneself. The truth is that a new trainee IS afraid, they should accept it and just call it that, fear, anxiety, no need to make justifications or to blame it on strangers that they don't know personally and just assume to be "rude". It's just the inner machinations of their minds. And it's ok. We've all been there. Not only in the gym. But in ANY new and challenging environment. Not knowing where to start in a place that seems foreign to you, doing activities that you're not normally used to, with all these expectations about yourself and others. It's ok. But they have to push through it. It's part of the process of gaining strength. Mental strength too.
Overarching point: your time in a gym will be a lot more enjoyable and worthwhile if you focus on yourself. Show a little self awareness about people who are open to talking and who isn't. Don't impose your needs on anyone else. Be there to train first, and socialize second - and don't try to force conversations on people that aren't into it.

As someone who has had a rough two years since COVID, and saw about 50% of weight loss being brought back due to stress, mental depression, and a multitude of other things, I thank you for this video Alan. It was so hard for me to get back to a routine, but I'm going strong again, and slowly but surely getting back to where I started Pre-COVID, and continuing from there
On the whole inspiration point, if you keep at it and keep grinding, it may come full circle. I know when I initially went, there were some people you'd look to as you wanted to be like them. After putting in the work over some years, there have been a few people at the gym I'm at that have told me that they'd like to get to my point. It's a very humbling thing as usually I'm just in there doing my own thing never thinking that someone could be striving to be like you. Biggest thing is keep after it!

I started working out 4 months ago and I were super intimidated when starting out. I was kinda scared I would lift incorrectly in front of others and they would judge me. It took me approx. 2 months to stop caring and now I'm 4 months in and could lesser of a shit about the other people at the gym. (If they are toxic) Power through your intimidation. Don't compare yourself to other people, it doesn't matter what weights they move, only your weight and what you can do matters.
Im a fat woman that fell in love with lifting, partly because I can just do it alone without having to speak to anyone. Since I started doing compound lifts and free weights, I have been getting so much unsolicited advice, which a lot of times is fine and even appreciated, but it is seriously nagging at my confidence and makes me super anxious and not want to go to the gym. That’s my own issue though and I’ll get over it lol

Great advice video. One suggestion for the not enough women or I'm too fat/out of shape crowd, ask the owner or staff if they know at what times do their certain type of crowd show up to train. Maybe there are more women there during lunch hours, or MWF are dominated by men & TRS are more a balanced mix or something. Maybe there are more hardcore lifters on weekend afternoons, and you want to be around that crowd when you're wanting to get more serious about lifting or competing.

I'll second that suggestion for a video topic. I discreetly keep an eye on people who look rather lost or uncomfortable, and sometimes I'll make a point to say hello. I train powerlifting style, so I have a few minutes rest time between sets to briefly interact. One new thing I have noticed - Earbuds make it damn hard to ask people for advice, so if you want to be perceived as approachable, don't jam them in so tight you can't hear-anything around you.
@@BigBlueJake What you sow you reap because you go out of your way to make people comfortable God will do the same with you. ua-cam.com/video/xe8Dzu5egHk/v-deo.html - I’d love to know your thoughts on this
This would probably apply more to larger gyms with many more people around, but with smart phones readily available, the fear of bad technique etc. has one more drawback. Some person looking to get famous on UA-cam or IG instead of helping you out. With a home gym, you don't have to worry about ending up on "gym fails compilation - week of 12/23/21". But I agree with everything said in this video, great job.
Something I've become proud of myself for in the last year or so has been finally sticking to a lifting routine and being comfortable with being the only woman in the gym/lifting area. It for sure comes with time, and now every time I see another woman using a barbell I cheer a bit internally too. Be the change you want to see in your gym! Chances are the guys will be jealous of how good your form/mobility is anyway!
One thing I've found in franchise gyms that go on about their "friendly atmosphere" tend to have the exact opposite. Most people in those sorts of gyms are quite hostile, stand off-ish, and judgy. Like they're only friendly on their terms and if you're in the clique.
The Toxic gym issue isn't an issue I've actually ever encountered, but it was still a "reason" for why I didn't go to the gym. I think it was mostly stereotypical thinking and intimidation which made me view people who were "ripped" as being egotistical or toxic, even though most of the type it was just people who were hyped or having a good time at the gym. Fortunately, most of the gyms I've been to are on the smaller end, but I can only think of only one instance in the last 4 years where there was someone who was rude and it was a dude in his 40s with what I assume was his twin brother and they would take up all of the space in the gym with their set-ups and frequently ask to use the equipment I was using.

AMEN!!! When I first started using the free weight side of the gym I was a bit intimidated but soon realized the guys weren't judging me and it wasn't long before a couple of gals joined me!! LET'S GET STRONG TOGETHER!! And don't interfer with folks with earbuds and headphones....you focus on you! Great advice!
I had a conversation with someone when we drove by a Planet Fitness and it of course had the banner that read "Judgement Free Zone" and he said "yeah right! When you're at the gym, EVERYONE is looking at you", and I was like "what are you talking about? Everyone is doing their own thing and focused on themselves, they don't really care what you're doing". If you're being judged it's probably because you have poor etiquette like no re-racking, not cleaning after your done, etc
Haha that's funny. Throughout the sections of this video about other people judging them, I was thinking to myself how amazing it is that planet fitness, a multi-million dollar business, is built entirely on this ridiculous misconception
"If situation gets worse, leave the gym" YOU shouldn't have to leave the gym. The person/people talking trash making lives hard are the ones that need to leave.
When I was at a globo gym men were very likely to hit on me in the free weight section because it was so uncommon to see women there in my area. Definitely felt like all eyes were on you, you couldn’t just mind your business and train. I ended up switching to a powerlifting/strongman warehouse gym owned by a woman and the environment was completely different for the better. Just gotta find he right kind of place for you.
The worst gym for me was a local branch of a big box gym during the day when it was all 50 and older, mostly old men. I had a guy jack his treadmill up and lean over trying to look down my shirt.
Used to be anxious to go to the gym. Till, I realized that most people look at me and are intimidated by my scotch Irish genes being hairy, and all that. So I put that idea in my head “im not going to be intimidated, I am the intimidation” def makes me keep to my business and I get to get my gains so win win.
I'm glad you moved the last thing to the front as not everyone will watch the video all the way through. I've seen it a lot and I've seen people cancel gym memberships over a falling out to the point where *everyone* in the friend group eventually left lol which has to be tough for a gym owner to have 3+ people cancel at once
when I started going to the gym, I did feel a bit intimidated. not by people at the gym, but by myself. I'm a very good quitter at times, and I've easily quit going to the gym in particular. so this time all I did was make sure I was in the gym at least 3 to 4 times a week doing whatever. mainly cause I was again intimidated by the free weight section. over time I got more comfortable that I then was able to step into the power rack and again I did whatever. it was a month later that I started doing a structured program

Trained exclusively at home for a little over a year now. Installed a pull up bar, lucky to inherit a few bar bells & several sets of weights. Slowly added to my collection over the year & for me i love it. Lost about 80-85 lbs while adding a bit of size as well. Main thing i always stress to myself: keep it fun. And gyms, unfortunately, is not for me. Its not perfect but i dislike people that much so…. 🤷♂️

Joe - I could never join a gym like Alan's. I currently belong to a "pansy" gym that's really clean and doesn't cater to hardcore lifters like Alan. In my opinion, most people aren't hardcore, so machines are a better fit for us pansies. The goal of the pansy is to just make it to the gym and exercise and stay in shape. I think that's what 90% of gym goers are looking for. Pansy equipment. LOL. I could be wrong, but I think pansy gyms are the future. In fact, I love my pansy gym, but I wish they had at least two free bars for clean and press. Instead they have smith machines which is ok I guess, but not the same. I'd like to hear what Alan has to say.
@@joecowan3719 - I envy you. I used to have a gym in my garage and I loved it. I used to pump out 3 or 4 sets in between chores. My current home only has a 2 car garage, so that won't work for me. I want a 3 car garage on my next home so I can put a gym inside. Seriously, the home gym is the way to go. But I would still join a pansy gym as well unless I could fit least $100K of equipment in it. But that's just me I guess. Pansy equipment is expensive.
I swear you can read my mind . Started using my garage just over a month as a gym. Feeling great from of it but I've been debating to go to a proper gym after the new year. The fear of being judged is killer but I know facing the fear is best bet to learn and better my body and mind. Major respect for this video 😊

Try doing both I have a home gym in 6 years I have spent I think 90 days total back in commercial gyms, These days are not consecutive sometimes I would go a week or a day depending on my mood and always pay by usage instead of getting a membership. I thought of it like going to a restaurant once a while. I don't care about being judged but am bothered by people constantly preaching something or sell something, their pitch usually begins I see what you're doing but you could be doing much more with my free unwarranted help or if you hire me, happens at almost every gym I visit.
I spent a week at Alan's gym and I have to say that everyone was friendly and welcoming. You could easily spot the regulars, but they were not put off by the presence of visitors. The other good thing about this gym is people are serious about working out and it's motivating to be around people with the same strength goals as you. The big plus is the music is loud and you don't need headphones to block out disco or pop. Rock on! Thanks for making videos they've been very helpful.
Intimidation was the big deterrent for me, but I am grateful because your videos got me into powerlifting which kept me consistent, and over the last 3 years I found out I’m pretty damn strong
Great tips Alan! The one thing that got me over my fear of the gym when I was younger, was getting 6 sessions with a trainer from the gym. It cost a little bit, but the benefit from that money was definitely well spent! At the end of 6 sessions of the 3 weeks, I learned how to use all the equipment in the gym with much better form than I would have known myself. Once I had gone through the sessions, I realized how to progress and what equipment to use. Then, to change things up, you now can easily go online to find new ways to do things to keep it fresh.
Big facts as always, Alan. You're spot on regarding toxic people/cliques as well - most people I talk to about joining a gym are apprehensive because they fear what people will think. I can't count the number of times I've heard people gatekeeping fitness.
Trained at my home gym for about 6 years and only in the past 2-3 have trained in specific strongman/powerlifting focused gyms. Can say there is definitely an intimidating vibe and a couple douchebags but for the most part everyone has been extremely kind and respectful which has fostered a supportive environment for my lifting!

I think a lot of men have anxiety about going to the gym and not having the strength corelative to their size, I've heard about those stories and I am one of those stories. I am a large guy but people think I am stronger then I actually am and when I use small weights next to the guy that is half my size but uses twice the weight and I catch people looking at me during exercise. That puts me off, and is a reason why I never stuck with weightlifting.
I just have a home gym because it's more convenient, you can set up everything for the next workout the day before, you don't need to wait if someone is using the equipment and I don't have to spend time getting on my bike and riding it to the gym,it's also easier to start doing my workout because sometimes you just don't want to go and when the gym is in the other room it's very hard to skip a workout. It also requires very little money, all you need is the following: -screw on dumbells -2.2 meter barbell -elastic bands -pull up bar -dip bars -Rack -Adjustable bench Then you have everything you need for a home gym,you can add things like a hexagonal bar and a weighted vest if you want(I have those) but buying all of those things(plus a lot of weights) costs about 1000$ ,you will never need to buy those things again since they don't break and you don't need to pay for a gym membership ever again.
The act of going to the gym is an admission of "my body isn't perfect and I want to improve it." Those people you think are judging you are no different. They're a lot more focused on themselves than you. Everyone has to start somewhere and they know that.
Thanks for posting this, I can relate as a female beginner in the gym, I've been going for around 2 months now. Got laughed at today by 2 gym bros, when I was doing pull up negatives (I had to use a step to get into position to do these, as I can't yet manage a full pull up). Also, they got a bit pissy I was doing squats in the squat rack, and both racks in the small gym were in use when they wanted to use them. As soon as I finished my squats I cleaned the equipment and racked the weights. It says more about the people laughing at someone making a sincere effort than the person being laughed at. I won't let them stop me from working out at the gym.
Just leaving a comment to say: I'm very glad that you yourself can recognize that those people making fun of you are nothing but peanuts 🥜😂 I bet you're kicking ass in your fitness journey, keep it up!
Built my own home gym and been working out there for 2 months now. Gave up my local gym because of vaccine passports, crowds, travel time, people using it as a meeting space rathe than a workout space, and the constant posturing for social media.
I did that aswell but I struggle to motivate myself training at home, and the equipment i want was getting too expensive so i went back to training at my old gym.
@@anti-narc1343 if you don't want any meaningful variation in your workouts, then yeah sure. I want access to sleds, glute ham benches, boxing equipment etc,and I don't have the space or cash to buy that equipment for my personal gym.
About the last point, I remember bringing my GF for her first time to the gym and I coached her. One of the first things we did was going to the free weight room. And she was way more relaxed about it later on. We talked about how she found it intimidating but after we had gone a few times that fear just disappeared. It's really about building experience and going through the process that you build enough confidence to do anything. Also a good thing I coached her gave her way more confidence.
If you have been bullied for a long time and want to do something about it, its hard to walk into a place where many members look like the same people who bullied you. Sure there are good people everywhere, but its hard to put aside those insecurities. Insecurities are built over time and takes at least that long to break them down. Just like it takes a long time to become proficient at anything this include confidence. Everybody is different some are extroverts and some are introverts, or any other label we want to place on them, but we all don't react to situations the same. Remember that the next time you see someone having difficulties or show uncertainties going to the gym.
I’m definitely one of the people who talks very little and has my headphones on the whole time, even between sets. I’m glad you defended us, because that is EXACTLY me. The gym IS my “me time.” I work in customer service and get absolutely burned out by people. So naturally, I don’t want to talk to anyone at the gym. I want to get in, do my sets, and leave. I HATE it when people come up to me while I’m squatting or something and go “dude! You did that for a triple? That’s my goal for one rep! What program are you using?” I try not to be rude, because I understand they just want to get better, and that’s what we’re all here for, and I’ve been there. But I also think headphones in is a universal sign for “I’m not interested in having a conversation right now. Please don’t attempt to talk to me unless it’s an emergency or you need a spot.” When I was a newbie, I specifically went to people who did NOT have headphones in for that reason. So I think it just comes down to gym etiquette, which admittedly many people may not know. Wipe down your equipment after use, re-rack your weights (in the CORRECT spot), and don’t talk to people with their headphones in, and you’ll generally be well-liked or at least not hated
Re-racking does my head in. Not because I have a problem with doing it but because I'm one of the ~2% of members who understands how to do it correctly or even bothers to do it at all. I actually go out of my way between sets to tidy up the immediate area, so much so that I spend 20+ minutes tidying up plates every time I go to the gym. I've been trying to set a good example for other members but it's just not taking. I cannot believe people are this ignorant so it must just be that they don't give a "%£$^. The staff don't care either, some of them are no better than the average member. It's not like I care about the effort I expend doing it as I was only going to be waiting around for the next set anyway, It's just the sheer disbelief that practically everyone in there can hold their head high while disrespecting everyone around them. I've already spoken to management/staff about it and nothing changes as they don't suspend offenders. Occasionally I pick up other members for it but while the dominant mindset is 'everyone else does it so I'm justified screwing over the next person', nothing will change
In the seventies I practically grew up in a small gym that catered mostly to Olympic lifters, powerlifters and serious bodybuilders, and I never felt intimidated by shit there. Those guys were all cops, military, heavy security or hardcore career/college athletes who did a lot of yelling and grunting, but they were all cool guys that would even mentor young women who came in the gym to work out like a sister and make sure nobody made them uncomfortable. I guess folks have lost a good bit of personal class and character nowadays, making it hard for them to act their age and get along with each other.
What you say is pretty on par with my experience. I started crossfit this summer: out of shape, overweight, very little stamina, and virtually no upper body strength. And also *very* conscious and insecure about myself as a transgender woman who is taller than most men. But the atmosphere at my gym has been welcoming and supportive from the start. It doesn't matter if you end up on the bottom of the scoreboard of today's WOD. Have to scale down the exercises significantly. Or do a lift with an empty bar. I found that people don't judge you on how 'good' you are, that isn't important to anyone but yourself. What has surprised me the most: the biggest, strongest and most intimidating looking people are also the most supportive and helpful. Giving tips on technique, cheer you on trough those last few reps, hand out compliments and encouragements. And above all: whenever I talk negative about myself, saying things that I should have done better that day they immediately shut me down and point out the positive: I was there, challenged myself, tried, might have failed but tried again and grew as a person, even it is just a little. That is what matters.
As a former gym rat getting back into working out again after an injury, I think a lot of it is because of like you say the meat market mindset in a lot of commercial gyms. I love working out at Untamed Strength as it is such a positive vibe and amazing place to focus on training to get stronger with like minded people.
Biggest issue with gyms for me peoplewho feel like they own the whole area or too many people to where I don't feel like I'm getting a work out. So many times I just want to avoid having every rack taken, every machine there, or people who are frankly screaming by dude bros/young people who are quite loud to where I can hear them over my head phones at 100% volume. Or just people who hang out trying to post Instagram pics by the gym mirrors while I'm trying to walk around during a rest and they need to take a photo. I come to train not hear for someone's insta feed or hear someone's pr with thier friends. Glad for them to reach goals, doesn't mean I like hearing it over my gym Playlist after a long day.
First of all I love your profile picture and your beard. As a woman I am scared to go to the gym because I am extremely anti social and I dont want anyone talking or looking at me . I've been lifting at home for about a year but I want to lift alot heavier I guess I just need to break out of my shell :( ugh
I might get sht for this but... I was going to a gym that's mostly a powerlifting gym with strong man equipment too, not too different than untamed strength really. The guys there were cool; polite, cooperative, etc. I figure because deep down guys understand "the possibility of violence" as Jordan Peterson puts it. They understand if we go to far with it, things can go very south. Maybe? I don't know. It was actually the women that were the rude ones. taking equipment you're using while you're in a set, and other outright rudeness. One took something I was leaning my phone against to film my set right in the middle of it! (As one example.) Not to say all the women were rude, they weren't. But the rude people were pretty much always women. Got a chip on their shoulder maybe? Maybe they're thinking, "I need to be like a guy here. What are guys like? Oh I know: rude!" Maybe? Who knows.... No we're brusque. Uncommunicative; that's not necessarily the same thing as rude... I will say I didn't experience this at the big box gyms when I used to go to them. But those things have got their own set of bizarre problems..... But then again, I could be wrong.... Well whatever. I fckn' hate driving anyway. With my home gym, all I have to do is walk over to that corner of my place. It's much more likely to get done that way.........
Alan, I fell out of power lifting (and lifting in general) a few years ago due to several reasons. My life is changing again and I am looking to start back sometime soon. I always watched your channel before and I have been creepin for the last few months again. I wanted to say that I appreciate how consistently genuine of a person you are. In no way have you "sold out". The only differences I see are there is more weight on your bar and your form looks even better than before (and way more subscribers). I wish you the best. Merry Christmas!
We had left a gym because of gym drama, gossip and cliques. Most people at most gyms are NOT part of that but these types of people you are talking about do exists. I absolutely do not say ANYTHING on the gym floor and do not want to be bothered as well. I find it amazing that people get upset because someone is focused on their workout.
I would add, if you feel like you don't know what you're doing and you don't know where to start, if you can afford it, hire a personal trainer. It's been one of the best things I ever invested in, in my life. Make sure your trainer / coach is teaching you and arming you with knowledge, not just telling you what to do and then sitting there on their phone.
I've been going to a small strongman/powerlifting gym for a few months now and I always feel like it's hard to fit in because of these groups/friendships that have already been formed especially at certain times of the day it's something I've never experience before at a gym
There's this chick at my gym that always tries to talk to me, brings her work drama to me, complains about her kids constantly. Sometimes she even lets her kids play and make noise at the gym while I'm trying to lift. Really pisses me off, makes me regret ever setting up a home gym
LMAO

Yeah, those were some crazy assholes. I can't imagine that happening at many places, but I guess I am wrong.
honesly that sounds like you are either making it up or exaggerating badly. I mean why on Earth would they even laugh? Were they high or you farted during one of your squats? Or maybe they weren't even laughing at you. It just doesn't make sense to me man.
Yeah, they're the same guys who scoff at me for 1 repping what they do for sets... but at least mine hits depth ;)
I've also noticed bodybuilding focused gyms tend to be douchier.

There’s female only gyms
When doing hip thrusts as a man in front of other men is scarier than dropping the soap in a maximum security prison is for some people.....
Like yeah okay, maybe that might be true sometimes, but in my experience I've never found that to be the case.
We were both a bit apprehensive because there were a bunch of big intense dudes in there, but everyone ended up being super nice and helping this skinny little guy learn how to work out. ive been aproached once by a dude to ask me how much was i pulling (weighted pullups) and i told him. he just put a weird face (like a yikes face) and went back to where he was. what was even that lol.
Who goes up to a random person and asks what their gender is? Incredibly rude, especially today

Yeah,I have a home gym now but when I went to the gym I was there just to train, not to make friends.
Yep. I keep my head down to keep people from bothering me lol but if anyone needs anything I try to be nice

We all need a gym bro like this man, that's #1. Number two, he is SO right. If you're going to the gym for anything other than bettering yourself, you're already at a loss
Something that was a revelation to me when I started -
I thought everyone was judging my technique, that I had very few plates on the bar, that I wasn't reaching depth etc.

Exactly! Even as a younger man I barely noticed anyone even more so now. If you’re there to just work out and not mingle then there is no culture.
100% this.
The only place where I've seen cliques are in classes at big box gyms. Some of them have regulars and they can get cliquy.
I remember the first time I ever went to a gym. I had no idea what I was doing and I'm sure I looked like a fool trying to figure out how to use machines.
There was a group of younger dudes that kept laughing and hooting at me. "Are you lost, girl?"
I canceled the membership asap.
I have been at my current gym for almost 2 years now. No one talks unless it's to help or work in. Got my squat form down bc some muscle man politely coached me 1 time. We haven't spoken since lmao.
I am the focused leave me alone workout person. I will smile and be kind, but I am there to get it done.
Yes it should even for the most focused persons be possible to spend a smile to others that cross your path between the sets
I started going to the gym as an overweight woman who was deeply insecure 5 years ago, and my focus was to make a full lifestyle change. I’ve always loved weight training because it makes me feel strong and empowered. I encourage other women who don’t weight training try it. Great video! I remember when I first started the gym I completely embarrassed myself, did not even know what a dumbbell was, but did get a good laugh. Fast forward 10+ years, I'm one of the most knowledgeable and biggest MF in the gym and a lot of people come and ask me questions. Love it.
I've trained at home for years. For all the friendships and good gym times that I enjoyed, there was a lot of drama and shenanigans that I don't miss.

On her first competition she placed 3rd
She just won strongwoman of the year Australia award and the most inspirational strongwoman Australia award and our little gym ( it’s called Stronger in Nowra NSW) won the gym of the year award.

Preach Brother! Many younger people avoid me at the gym because I have an intense look on my face that tends to frighten people.

This is a very good video talking about gym culture and all these reasons, I train at home because I got tired of other people at the gym
But it keeps me in shape and that's all I care about.
need a gym where they call all members "your honor" since we're the only ones judging ourselves
I definitely see why some people are intimidated. I'm not personally, I just don't like dealing with assholes which are incredibly common in bigger/corporate gyms.
"hey, please don't piss in the swimming pool"
"oh, this is news to me"
Lone female in the free weight area - never had an issue.

"If situation gets worse, leave the gym"
YOU shouldn't have to leave the gym. The person/people talking trash making lives hard are the ones that need to leave.
It's usually much easier to find a different gym than to start a bunch of drama.
🤣 haha. I shouldn't laugh. But i wouldn't have thought of lifting up the treadmill to see more boob 😅

Attending a powerlifting gym made me more comfortable with training while being overweight, because the culture doesn't care about that.

Rock on! Thanks for making videos they've been very helpful.
loud and good sound system is gold at a gym!

This is exactly why I made a home gym. No need to experience the toxicity of public gyms.
I bought a home gym so I can scream like Bugenhagen in my garage :D
My dogs get pretty toxic when I work out instead of taking them for a walk, but I enjoy not having to wait for equipment
It also requires very little money, all you need is the following:
-screw on dumbells
-2.2 meter barbell
-elastic bands
-pull up bar
-dip bars
-Rack
-Adjustable bench
Then you have everything you need for a home gym,you can add things like a hexagonal bar and a weighted vest if you want(I have those) but buying all of those things(plus a lot of weights) costs about 1000$ ,you will never need to buy those things again since they don't break and you don't need to pay for a gym membership ever again.

I'm sick of hearing people complain about things being Toxic.
Built my own home gym and been working out there for 2 months now. Gave up my local gym because of vaccine passports, crowds, travel time, people using it as a meeting space rathe than a workout space, and the constant posturing for social media.

Toxic gyms are like:
"Bruh the smith machine is better than free weights"
the correct answer for the smith machine is always........NO
If you have been bullied for a long time and want to do something about it, its hard to walk into a place where many members look like the same people who bullied you.
What program are you using?”
I try not to be rude, because I understand they just want to get better, and that’s what we’re all here for, and I’ve been there.
"Avoid gym drama??"
Alan, Alan, Alan… how can you call yourself a fitness influencer with that kind of attitude!?
came upon your channel yesterday. love your message. Im a skinny fuck but the gym has always been a positive place for me.
