I was thinking the same thing. Blame the poor, the sick, the unemployed, the disabled, those who can't work. Say people are lazy and don't have a work ethic. It's a disgusting diversion tactic. In reality it's never been harder for people to afford to live. So they're already incentivised to work to survive. They're not doing it on purpose to inconvenience the government. They should be focusing on the real problems but they've put that in the too hard basket.

It is not healthy or normal to be allowed to sit about doing nothing all day. Life is boring if you don't put some effort into it. Hardly any. Foreign-born people in the UK are much less likely to be on benefits than British born. Foreign citizens are not allowed to reside more than 3 months unless they can show an income above the average wage.
Asylum seekers are not allowed to work and not allowed normal benefits. First, even getting asylum-seeker status is a long and difficult process. Until then they get nothing.
If they get asylum-seeker (used to be called refugee) status accommodation with 2 meals, adults are allowed £8 a *week* for all personal expenses like another meal, transport, clothing, toiletries, laundry, communication etc.
If meals are not provided, they get under £50 a week - £7 a day for utility bills, food and all other personal needs.

Tory government is indeed pursuing policies that harken back to the harsh and stigmatizing approach of the Victorian Poor Law system.
Rhetoric from Sunak and ministers framing benefit claimants as "taking taxpayers for a ride" and suggesting a "duty" for disabled people to work, echoing the stigmatizing mindset of the Victorian era.
This is proof that Britain has not come out of the Victorian age. Societal attitudes from that time, that blame the poor for their circumstances is ever present.
There are large numbers of children and families experiencing severe material hardship and going without essentials.
The Tory government is pursuing significant cuts and restrictions to welfare benefits, making it harder for people to access support.
There is a clear ideological framing of benefit claimants as "dependent" and a "burden", echoing the Victorian mindset of discouraging reliance on poor relief.
Proposed reforms include measures like making disability assessments more difficult, reducing automatic cash benefits, and giving the government new powers to penalize claimants.
This represents a shift towards a more punitive and restrictive welfare system, similar to the workhouse model of the 19th century Poor Laws.
