It’s humiliating as a Canadian, KNOWING that regular, working Canadians are totally aware of the issue, that our allies have to politely tell us to increase our immigration and border security because the ruling party doesn’t seem to care. They’re saying something now in the hopes that we will independently seize the issue and start acting appropriately, but I fear what their actions will be if Canada decides to continue slipping down the slippery slope of ineptitude and inaction. I'm a navy veteran, joined in 1951. The Canadian government, regardless of the Party in power, has been screwing the military around for many decades. Equipment procurement is a joke and the main bone of contention. The annual budget for all three services is also a joke. I remember in the 1950's, in the middle of the Cold War, when Canada was first line defense in the North Atlantic when it came to RCAF Coastal Command out of Stations Greenwood, NS and Summerside, PEI and the navy's role out of HMCS Shearwater near Darmouth, NS. We all had a designated area to patrol out to our 200 mile limit from the coast and north/south from Newfoundland to the American border south of Nove Scotia. We were part of the NORAD system out of Colorado and completed patrols reported to them constantly. There were many Russian ships in the area and we were assigned to keep track of them in their comings and goings. In 1955, the government restricted our fuel consumption on a monthly basis to the point where a number of days before the end of each month we couldn't fly because we had used up our allotment. So here we were, NATO's front line defense, unable to fly patrols because we had used up our petrol ration. I've been out since the 60's, so have no idea what's been happening behind the scenes, but in keeping up with the news, it looks fairly grim. In 2024, with the focus on the Northwest Passage and the state of world affairs, we need to step up to the plate and do better.
And immediately blamed Canada for our weak border before becoming properly informed that it was their very own flight schools training them while they lived there through legitimate visas. It's time our federal government have our own DOGE and start cutting wasteful spending and put the savings towards the 2% NATO commitment. I'm a navy veteran, joined in 1951. The Canadian government, regardless of the Party in power, has been screwing the military around for many decades. Equipment procurement is a joke and the main bone of contention. The annual budget for all three services is also a joke. I remember in the 1950's, in the middle of the Cold War, when Canada was first line defense in the North Atlantic when it came to RCAF Coastal Command out of Stations Greenwood, NS and Summerside, PEI and the navy's role out of HMCS Shearwater near Darmouth, NS. We all had a designated area to patrol out to our 200 mile limit from the coast and north/south from Newfoundland to the American border south of Nove Scotia. We were part of the NORAD system out of Colorado and completed patrols reported to them constantly. There were many Russian ships in the area and we were assigned to keep track of them in their comings and goings. In 1955, the government restricted our fuel consumption on a monthly basis to the point where a number of days before the end of each month we couldn't fly because we had used up our allotment. So here we were, NATO's front line defense, unable to fly patrols because we had used up our petrol ration.
I've been out since the 60's, so have no idea what's been happening behind the scenes, but in keeping up with the news, it looks fairly grim.
In 2024, with the focus on the Northwest Passage and the state of world affairs, we need to step up to the plate and do better.

If china and/or Russia decide to come at Canada via the north we have no way to really defend. If we need help from NATO allies we need to meet or exceed our commitment to our military as per the NATO agreement.
