Telescoping magnets work great for pulling tstat wire. Tie a small link chain to one end of the wire, drop it into the wall, use magnet to go in the wall and pull the chain through
You nailed it bro I spent $30 on that Klein 7 in 1 Malco put it to shame with retention of screws the Klein was amazing for all the other sizes other than 5/16 1/4
I have had mine for about a month( malco 2in1 1/4-5/16) always gets stuck and have to bust out the channel locks to switch it around. I would personally recomend the dewalt magnetic clean out bits way better they have a slide on them that pushes the magnetic part of the bit all the way out favourite bits.
Everyone says to use the malco1/4-5/16, I personally hate fighting it, it always gets stuck and have to use chanel locks to switch it around, my favorite bits are the dewalt magentic clean out bits(1/4,5/16,3/8) they last FOREVER and are a breeze to use. By the time I grab my channel locks and flip it around I might as well have switched bits. Installer/tech
All very good tools. Another few that are under $30 that are good to carry are: 11 in one screwdriver Non contact volt detector Inspection mirror Service wrench with gas valve test port bit Malco 5/16 and 1/4" combo impact bit Husky precision screwdriver set Titan palm ratchet with screwdriver bits All little cheap trinkets i cant live without when servicing furnaces. Also cool pro tip you can tape or wire a match to your extendable magnet to light tough to reach pilots. Theres a company that makes a tool called the extend a match which is like a telescoping alligator clip for this purpose. Sweet video man!
Thank you for sharing your tips and experience in the trade. Would you be willing to share what you feel is the best work clothes, gloves, and footwear you believe is beneficial in the HVAC career field? Thank you for considering.
I recently had to work on a piece of equipment where I ran into a situation that I had to go down to the hardware store and purchase two of those 12 inch Milwaukee extensions and a 6 inch one and put them all together as one large extension because I couldn’t reach in there with my arm due to space restrictions and I didn’t want to have to take the front off the piece of equipment just due to the amount of fasteners I would have to remove… What a pain in the keister. It worked out OK but that’s the first time I’ve ever needed like a 30 inch extension and the funny thing was I was using it with my little Kline mini ratchet because the fasteners were a little tiny fasteners that I didn’t want to strip out.
Heeeeeeey long time no see! I work industrial refrigeration now and I gotta say your videos helped me very much through school and when I’m doing ac side work. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and explaining how each components better then my HVAC-R teacher
Hi My first impression of you and your videos was ... negative. I was wrong. I have learned a lot. So... Thanks. (It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks) 66 1/2 and learning. Please keep teaching; even from Hawaii. J
I use a couple of long, straight forceps and a strip of scotch bright pad to clean those hard to reach or remove flame sensors. Saves you from having to remove them with the flexible bit extension. Just have to make sure the flame sensor is cooled off.
A speed bit!! Under $20 @ Harbor freight. It's great for different size hole drilling in sheet metal. Also, a 6 in 1 screwdriver with 1/4 and 5/16 nut driver opening
protip: take your 3.2amp fuse and use it conjunction with alligator jumper... now you aren't limited to spade terminals. I make a set of "low voltage jumpers" everytime I see those fuses.
10 additional helpful tools: Kneeling Pad Extra Thick (w/ Built in handle) For us Old Guys. 6" Machinist Rule and /or Stainless Steel 1/4" 6ft. pocket Measuring Tape. Magnetic Fluke meter holder - hands free meter work. Pocket Tungsten Scriber with Magnet - marking & picking things up. HVAC Tables, Equations & Rules of Thumb Quick-Card. Klein 3 in 1 precision pocket screwdriver. Lighted Mirror Extension Tool. Fluke non Contact voltage tester. Folding Utility Knife. Pipe Clamp Thermocouple (preferably two)
Wonderful list!! :) Thank you for sharing! I have a Fluke meter as well and I do have that magnet for it that you mentioned. All the others are good tools too!
Hilmar makes a great 9 in 1 with a Schrader bit. I also like the double ended nut drivers. They come in 3 and 6 in. One side is 1/4 the other is 5/16. Both magnetic
Hey Jay, I have 9 of the 10. I'll get my dental scraper tomorrow. You're missing a Klein stubby multi. Also I bought a Skil USB rechargable screwdriver/drill driver for under $30 on Amazon. It's compact and pivots to a pistol grip. Only powerful enough to remove door screws but that's all I want it for.
Oh wow! 9 out of 10 is impressive! You must have all the right tools to make life easier then! :) Thank you for the additional suggestions! A few of my co-workers have those "mini-guns" you mentioned and they love them!
One tool that really comes in handy is used in gas welding and brazing it is a tip cleaner that also works very good for cleaning out offices on standing pallet stoves and standing pilot either oil or gas burning furnaces
Testo 550 gauges.. Digital..will do superheat, subcool instantly, pressure across dryers AND has a Zero pressuring option, something a Bluetooth set up has
Awesome video BUD. Appreciate your sincere effort AND commitment in making these videos. RESPECT.. (from DFW, Texas) 1. Milwaukee 6 in 1 Wire stripping and Reaming pliers. 2. Klein 4 in 1 Precision electronics screwdriver. 3. Klein 1/4" and 5/16" nut drivers. 3. Yellow Jacket Gasket removal tool. Just to name a few "brand specific" basic tools that from my own experience, have found really solid and well built. As far as listing the Nut Drivers. My thoughts are that for the simple tasks such as taking off an electrical compartment cover or pulling a flame sensor, using an "old school" nut driver is as, if not, more effective practice. How many outdoor covers have we come across that are not able to be properly secured due to stripped screw holes from being over torqued by impact drivers? Too many in my experience.. Reducing this problem in the field would be a win for all of us. Just my opinion, does anyone agree?
Thank you Benjamin!! Glad you like the videos and appreciate your comment and the additional tool suggestions! I agree that it is annoying to find stripped screw holes. The Milwaukee drill I showed at the end is the one I always use and it has a low spin speed which reduces the possibility of stripping anything. Haha well and most of the senior techs I worked with drilled it into me.. The fact that I should NEVER set the torque high. "2 is as high as you can go" Lol. I also work on other household appliances that have a lot of plastic parts, having the torque set low becomes even more vital with those.. I wish I would have mentioned this in the video but thank you for bringing it up! Maybe I will make a separate short video about setting the torque low. Interested to see what other veteran techs will have to say though :)
Update: Since watching you showcase AND speak on your Milwaukee screw gun, I actually picked one up at Home Depot. On sale for $59 that day! I must say that I am really enjoying it. I am a hvac service technician. You were right about the clutch feature. Works great for applying just enough torque. I also really enjoy the size and weight of it. Thanks for exposing me to it. IDK if you’re into open top tool totes but i just picked up a Veto MCT-OT and it’s pretty awesome.
@@benjaminlam4770 Glad to hear I was able to talk you into getting a Milwaukee drill! :) I am sure you will love it! Sounds like you like it so far so that's good.. I looked at that tool bag, it looks nice! Thank you for mentioning it but I have a similar one by CLC.
Agree need a solder iron. Been on jobs where was a cold solder joint & was middle night holiday, had a spare board . Replaced 4-5 of them that winter. A solder iron been a temp fix. Carry more than two jumpers , seen some elaborate units where used three. Dental pick is good for O ring removal. One last thing, keep a small bottle of pain pills some where in your bag or Van , ammonium A.D. Also. I've been out 30 hours strait a few times in the old days, even a few caffeine pills . Ya I know it's crazy, I'm retired now, but the company when burners where out forgot you where human.
Sometimes you can get those magnetic trays for my O’Reilly’s auto parts for free. I got 10 of them just because one of the people behind the parts counter was in a good mood. Never hurts to ask
I bought one of those fuse popper tools years ago and it was the very first use I put it on and I found the short because it didn't pop out and the board started smoking and popped the transformer so it came from the factory messed up I just keep a crowd of fuses but I did find a short finder tool it will flash when there is a short and then you search and when you find the short it stops flashing
I have all those tools already(except the last of course). I was searching through the HVAC reddit boards, seen, and started collecting tools that different techs swear are life savers. I'm an installer so the jumpers and my "Short pro tool=mini 24v breaker" are the only two tools I rarely use. Do you have 5 honorable mentions? I clicked this video pumped to see what the UA-cam channel I frequent the most had that could be special only to already have them. BTW, of course, thank you for this. Without Reddit, this video would have helped me immensely. I have techs where I work, most don't even have tools like this and they're not expensive. Or if you make another to the $75 dollar range, I'll be sure to check that out too. I most definitely consider this a top notch UA-cam channel for HVAC. Extremely helpful. Oh yeah, I don't have magnetic jumpers though.
Ah man.. Sorry to hear you already have all those and nothing stood out to you. Thank you for the positive comment though! This video is getting a lot of tool suggestions in the comments so there's a good chance there will be a sequel later on :) I am thinking of perhaps splurging and buying 10-20 suggested tools that I don't yet have and making a video with those next.
I'm not a HVAC technician, just a DIY'er, I just ordered the lim 25" Durable Telescoping Magnetic Grabber, I have a larger one that just doesn't fit everywhere. Always another great set of must have's is: Magnet 3 x LED Magnetic Pickup tool, Telescoping Flexible Extensible Led Flashlights,Perfect Mechianic pick-up tools gifts for men, 4 x LR44 Batteries (Included) 1Pack $11.99 a set of 3, good buy on amazon. Check them out. Sorry about the large fonts, I just copied and pasted off amazon, a lot of typing, sort of goes hand in hand with the drill gun vs using a nut driver by hand. lol. Thanks for the video, very helpful for many of us.
Oh yesss, I love the fact that it is so slim and can get into tight spaces too! I have an extendable extension mirror where the mirror can pop off the magnet and the rod can be used as a grabber but it is so bulky that it doesn't help half the time. And thank you Robert!! Those are great suggestions!! You guys are leaving so many tool suggestions that I am pretty sure I will have to make a sequel to this video after I buy 10-20 of them :) Happy Thanksgiving to you and family!!!
All good things A few must-haves you missed that I use EVERY day: a kneeling pad - your knees won't last forever Right angle needlenose pliers - good for lots of things, but especially for hose clamps at weird angles Small 1/4" ratchet set Thumb driver - super handy on its own, and as an adapter www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-4-Piece-Steel-Handle-Ratcheting-Multi-Bit-Screwdriver-Set/1000566887 And this is one of the best tools I've ever used - parallel, smooth jaw, pliers - the mini version is perfect for tool bag and small spaces KNIPEX Tools 86 03 125, 5-Inch Mini Pliers Wrench
I used to use the dental pick but now use a welding tip cleaner. It works so much better. Also flame sensor cleaner. Looks like a lil pill bottle. Has wire brushes and you basically insert and twist and pull a few times and its clean.
Unless I missed it a solder iron should also be one of the tools you got to have. either battery or a/c type. Also my favorite tool is a multi meter, you can only go so far in diagnosing without one.
since both options I was gonna mention have already been mentioned the Malco 1/4" & 5/16" bit and a decent head lamp I'll mention to ALWAYS wear a face mask when in attics. I'm paying the cost for figuring this out late in the game
If he thinks he likes that flashlight, he would go nuts over Klein's rechargeable personal flashlight. It's that light but better- adjustable in 360 degrees, rechargeable, and you can charge your phone with it.
Any advice on how to land an entry level HVAC Tech gig after at least a 13 year abscence in the field. I did 3.5 years for a Mechanical outfit and I do have my EPA cards for handling refrigerants. Also graduated from HVAC school.
I don't know what state you are in but here in Minnesota I am sure you would be hired real quick. I would first decide whether to do residential or commercial and then apply in a couple different places close to where you live. Techs are in pretty high demand right now so I don't imagine you will have a hard time getting a job in the field.
Ah, I totally forgot about Christmas! That's a good idea, I don't think I will rename it at this point but I will add that line to the description. Thank you for the suggestion!
@@WordofAdviceTV When the views die down, you can recycle the video with a new Title..hahaha...then UA-cam will give you a copyright strike for copying your own video !!
Hmmmm 🤔, I was gonna say, what about, "HARBOR FREIGHT" , man, they have all those tools there and then some for real cheap prices, and if you sign up with your EMAIL you even get coupons sent to you as well..., and they're always having sales big sales like clearance sales, parking lot sales, holiday sales, you name it.!!! I mean, Amazon is cool and all but sometimes you like to browse through other tools and when you go to A H. F. store everything is right there, I mean, you're like a kid in a candy store!!, LOLO 🤣 😂 👍
Hey man just wondering why dont you go up to commercial work ? Dont you get bored of resi I did resi for half a year I went to commercial now I just wanted to know some resi for side jobs lol
My favorite tool is a set of Class 1 Yellow Jacket gauges calibrated to 1% accuracy. They stay calibrated and provide accurate superheat and sub-cooling readings .
My last comment was a wall of text but I just wanna say be careful of those jumpers for Amazon. Those 24 volt ones I view as trash. I'd rather use ones made for high voltage. I bought a pack of those cheap jumpers and a senior tech at my company used a disconnect to jump and power a recovery machine. That jumper blackened & fried to a crisp quick. Mymy.... it was a sight to behold. Ever since, never again cheap jumpers.
Thank you for the warning man! Those jumpers are only meant for low voltage and it didn't cross my mind to talk about that so thank you for bringing it up!
Lennox doesn't have anything on the old York furnaces. Far back behind burner box, 2 inches up, gas pipe, flue pipe, and wires physically in the way and no visual way to find it except maybe a precut hole on the side of you're lucky!
Hi I really enjoy your videos. I’m new to the trade and I have all the hand tools I need but I have been trying to figure out a store I can go to to get HVAC tools like manifold gauge sets Schrader valve removal tool ball valve attatchment for gauge sets stuff like this that aren’t really sold at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Is there a store that specifically sells HVAC parts and tools that I can browse? I know I can probably find the things I need from amazon but I would rather find a store that I can browse. If anyone knows of a place please let me know
Hi,Jay, I am from Toronto ,Ontario , Canada. Recently I got couple of calls from customers, they are complaining their furnace is working on and off, sometimes the blower is blowing but no heat, thermostat is not reaching the setting temperature.(most of them have Mid efficiency furnace) When I got there, everything works as it should be. I can not find any issue... Do you have any recommendation for it? Thank you! Rocky
Hey Rocky! That sounds like either a pressure switch problem or a high limit issue. Likely the furnace is simply overheating and going into a lockout. I actually even had that happen in my house ':) I filmed a video at that time if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/gj7HAxS9nX0/v-deo.html
11 in one with the shrader valve remover and mini flathead.

One very important tool you missed out is heavy duty magnet that keeps the door switch closed while you checking furnace in the attic

@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you and keep the videos coming.
Do a vid just like this with just electronic tools for HVAC... Thanks
I like the 11’1 tool
It's very nice! Thank you for the suggestion!
All good things
A few must-haves you missed that I use EVERY day:
a kneeling pad - your knees won't last forever
Right angle needlenose pliers - good for lots of things, but especially for hose clamps at weird angles
Small 1/4" ratchet set
Thumb driver - super handy on its own, and as an adapter www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-4-Piece-Steel-Handle-Ratcheting-Multi-Bit-Screwdriver-Set/1000566887
And this is one of the best tools I've ever used - parallel, smooth jaw, pliers - the mini version is perfect for tool bag and small spaces
KNIPEX Tools 86 03 125, 5-Inch Mini Pliers Wrench
All great tools!! Thank you for the suggestions!
I can’t believe u didn’t mention malco (5/16 and 1/4)
And my best tool is 6 in 1 screw driver ❤️
I have the 11-1 screw driver but I don't have the malco! I will repent and order one :) Thank you for the comment!
Ummm. No.
@kkovler A solder iron does save the day sometimes! Thank you for the suggestions!
since both options I was gonna mention have already been mentioned the Malco 1/4" & 5/16" bit and a decent head lamp I'll mention to ALWAYS wear a face mask when in attics. I'm paying the cost for figuring this out late in the game
That's very good advice, thank you!!
Great video! Very useful tool list!
Thank you Sam! Glad you liked the list!
About the magnetic jumpers, aren't most thermostat set screws made of aluminum which magnets will not work on?
Great video any little tool is useful I have an idea on what to get thank you sir.
You're welcome! There are some great suggestions in the comments too by the way :) Happy Thanksgiving Jaime!!
Happy thanks giving you too thanks for all your help.
Awesome, you always help.
If he thinks he likes that flashlight, he would go nuts over Klein's rechargeable personal flashlight. It's that light but better- adjustable in 360 degrees, rechargeable, and you can charge your phone with it.
My favorite tool under 30 bucks would be a note pad, pen, flashlight, thermostat screwdriver, and my klien magnitizer
Great video, very informative.
You've got a magnetic personality!
Lol, thank you!
Non-contact voltage detector
Get shocked enough times because your meter gets a false reading and you will be happy you got a NCVD.
Happy Thanks Giving boss!
Jose brother... Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving to you and family as well!!
Your videos always deserve a like and a refer to a friend.
Thank you Ahmed! I appreciate that! :)
@@WordofAdviceTV I really admire your work brother and all the stories and advice and jokes you tell at the end of most of your videos. Unique
@Ahmed Thanks again! :) Good to hear that you like the non topic related content as well!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family thanks for all the info .
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving to you and family as well!!
Great video going into the gift giving season ! You can easily re-title it as stocking stuffer ideas for your favorite tech.
@Dominic M Lol, I will just wait and see what happens. I rarely change title names but never considered it as a tool to garner views.
Young man, these are very good tips for what small tools to have handy. I hope you and yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Thank you!! :) Thanksgiving was great! I hope yours was the same or better!
Great information
Thank you John!
Awesome video as usual Jay. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family...👍👍👍
Mr. Miller, thank you! :) Happy Thanksgiving to you and family as well!!!
Dollar Tree sells that dental pick in a set with a tongue scraper and mirror.

Lining in the silver spoons...lol
Bryan Tyler Refrigeration
Haha glad you liked it man :) Thanks for watching!
Angled needle nose pliers....you know why ;-)
Try pen light with magnetic pocket clip....$8 a pop
Both great tool suggestions!! Thank you! :)
Thumbs up for the angled long nose pliers. I finally bought some pliers at Harbor Freight and they saved my life the next day.
@PickleRix Just to satisfy curious readers, if you don't mind sharing... What did they help you with or how did they help save your day?
Hmmmm 🤔,
I was gonna say, what about, "HARBOR FREIGHT" , man, they have all those tools there and then some for real cheap prices, and if you sign up with your EMAIL you even get coupons sent to you as well..., and they're always having sales big sales like clearance sales, parking lot sales, holiday sales, you name it.!!!
I mean, Amazon is cool and all but sometimes you like to browse through other tools and when you go to A H. F. store everything is right there, I mean, you're like a kid in a candy store!!, LOLO 🤣 😂 👍
Another great video
Thank you!
Sir, also make demonstrate electronic pressure gauges please.
I don't have those myself yet but if I get them I will make a video, thank you for the suggestion!
Great video my friend thanks
Thank you! Glad you liked the video!

Good little vid Jay ... Happy Turkey Day to you and the lovely Misses ...
Thank you Eddy! Happy Thanksgiving to you and family as well!!!
The Pookie Buster
My favorite tool is a set of Class 1 Yellow Jacket gauges calibrated to 1% accuracy. They stay calibrated and provide accurate superheat and sub-cooling readings .
A pair of trustworthy gauges is indeed a great tool to have! Thank you for the comment!
Great video does anybody else here the resemblance in his voice to Gru from despicable me when he is presenting his inventions. Lol
Thanks! Although I don't remember if Gru was the mad scientist or the main villain character..
*** Thank you very much. sir. I really learned a lot. good information. *****
Glad to hear that! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
No offense, but what a moron.
The Lennox flame sensor is the one that's hard to get to, not Carrier.
You are very right! Carrier/Bryant can be annoying but the Lennox I think you are referring to is definitely the nuisance king.
@@WordofAdviceTV 1/4,5/16 ratchet wrench with a 1/4 nut driver, easiest way I've found.
If anyone knows of a place please let me know
Thank you, I have just order some tools.
You're welcome! Glad I could introduce you to some new tools :)
You are the best! Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks Tony!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and family as well!
Hi,Jay, I am from Toronto ,Ontario , Canada. Recently I got couple of calls from customers, they are complaining their furnace is working on and off, sometimes the blower is blowing but no heat, thermostat is not reaching the setting temperature.(most of them have Mid efficiency furnace)
When I got there, everything works as it should be.
@@WordofAdviceTV cool, I will check it out. Thank you so much for your fast help.
A strong magnet for door safety switch override
Yes, thank you! Those are nice to have too. I need to get one since I always tape mine.
Well done Jay. Happy Thanksgiving!
A hand truck just to carry all my magnets!!!
Hahaha nice! :)
