Luka is a master at reading the defense. This is why he plays at the pace he does. He reacts to the defensive player's mistakes instead of predicting them most of the time.
I think his size helps a lot and complements this playstyle. He can position his body and use his strength to create and preserve space around him. It means that quicker players are less able to dart in at the ball for a deflection or steal.

Doesn't matter how slow you are in the game. It takes skills and talent in order to execute those things. Luka may show that it's that easy but it really takes effort to hone such a style of gameplay in the court
You don’t need to be the fastest to get buckets. You just need to get your defender off balance and create space by change of pace and good footwork. Luka does that well along with Harden.
The league wants these guys to be stars. They are not good, they are slow and unathletic but the defenders let them score on purpose. The games are rigged.
He’s slow. He has impeccable decision making paired with strength and the knowledge from playing over seas so long. He knows that just hitting the floor on some (John wall, Westbrook, Dennis smith, Kemba) shit is a terrible way to play they can be out of control a lot which correlates to more than turnovers.
Def makes sense to see the EU game impact him on his fundamentals. They played him closer there because they were more condensed (3-ball perimeter is smaller than the NBA, no 3 second rule in key so defenders can camp, hand checking is encouraged) and were allowed to be physical so he had to be crafty and use his handles, size and soft touch to finish. So he's used to dribbling close to opponents and using his change of speed (ever so slightly and even going slower) to his advantage. Also helps him rack FTAs because refs know he's being physical trying to finish in most matchups and defenders are going to play him close as he drives at the basket and try probe with his dribble. That is how you play as an elite under the rim finisher.
He's not slow or fast, he's agile. The ability to change direction faster than his opposition. Going against all these guys who are only able to accelerate, where he instead can adjust faster than their reaction time. That and the fact that he developed his game in a much more competitive Euroleague environment while his opposition were playing against kids in college.
This guy failed to mention one of Luka's most important strengths. His size. Once Luka gets in front of his man he slows down and keeps him on his back so the roller can catch up for a 1 v 2 under the rim or a kick out pass if someone on defense helps too much.

"Slow motion for me, slow motion for me Move in slow motion for me Ugh, I like it like that She working that back, I don't know how to act Slow motion for me, slow motion for me Slow motion for me, move in slow motion for me..."
Positioning, skill, fast foot work, court vision, shooting ability; Kareem, Tim Duncan, Larry Bird, Dirk Nowitzki, Luka, etc... No secret really. Fundamental , skilled basketball, high I.Qs and big bodies to get it done.
Something else... When you go slower you can change speeds in two directions, faster or slower... And it's easier to change directions and see the court, as you noted... But the mere fact that he can both speed up and slow down makes defending him more difficult.
He plays at his pace.. All the great players do. I've slowed down and play at this pace as well and it suits me better.. I've never been a speed demon from jump
2:50 Same mistake by you. He doesn't slow down in order to have more time to think. He does so in order to freeze the defender since he has nothing to read from Luka. You can't tell what he is going to do.
Also he clearly has a good view of the court by going slow you see all the options and pick the one it is the best for you atm. From there come all the crazy passes he does.
Luka hit the brakes and the defenders fly right by. Truly a Maverick. It's not about speed as in velocity, it's actually about difference in acceleration and deceleration, at that aspect, Luka is one of the quickest individual in the league.
He plays to get position on his opponents and then controls the pace of events, not just his own speed, but of the whole floor. At a critical moment he sees a way to score or passes away to someone else. This is tremendous self-control and awareness of all the players on the floor near him. Most players depend on quickness, like Russ Westbrook, and it may work, but Luka has less trouble being precise at the slower speed and this lets him be more consistent and efficient.
El juega así porque con el mismo cuerpo de los contrincantes " que carga" mientras va haciendo el drible se va protegiendo mientras va hacia el aro botando el balón con lado opuesto! Excelente estrategia!!
His speed earn him more space While accelerating usually pose "more danger" to the mind of opponent which translate to other defender try to block/intercept him, and also quick move usually kind of "telephony move" it screams what are you going to do, and when intercepted attacker has less time and space to change direction
I've been feeling really in control and under my legs when i slow my drives instead of going full throttle. Maybe that's what enables him to make a lot of quick decisions like passing, lob, but I think especially his inverted drags and snatch backs.
I think is more of perception from people on how he plays, he is from Slovenia (ex Yugoslavia) where he had idols like Drazen Petrovic, Toni Kukoc and many other from that area, this is taught.
It’s easy for him because he’s literally a big guard, stronger frame and he keeps his center of gravity by not leaving the floor explosively but more controlled. By him not speeding all over the court or rushing his handle it allows him to think or better yet use what the defense is giving him. Now for instance a guy like LeBron he’s just staring to learn pace as of his last season in Cleveland (2017) before he was KNOWN to freight train his way down and around the court. But they 2017 season he slowed down a lot by choice and not age cause he still got it but notice how his game started to resemble a lot like Kyrie’s.
It’s funny how small ball and 3pt have “change the game” but yet having a dominant center like a Joel or a really strong guard like Luka can’t be stopped. Imagine Luka an Joel together🥴🤧😷
His court awareness and basketball iq is impressive to say the least. He can reset plays through multiple pick and rolls or screens until he gets the matchup he wants then he either finish the play or creates the shot depending on whose open or if hes happy with his shot. Lukas 3pt isnt consistent though but itll get better. Whah makes him a superstar is he wants the ball in clutch moments and he has a good percentage when taking buzzard beaters. The sign of a great player!

He plays that way because he is tall enough to. The way he shades his body with angles is crazy. Its like watching Paul Pierce play again but Luka aint even in his prime yet either
Yeah but quick players have a good chance on heating up and becoming hot curry plays fast and look how many championships his team got kyries quick play style led to Cavs winning to
Basics. That's what he has. Athleticism isn't always a guaranteed score and flashiness doesn't always get the job done. It's the quality of the move, added by high basketball IQ.
In a word = _FEINTS_ , yo. Luka reacts to a defense how a fencer or judo master sizes up their opponent and gets them to use their own energy to get them to move where is more advantageous for Luka to score.

Something else... When you go slower you can change speeds in two directions, faster or slower... And it's easier to change directions and see the court, as you noted... But the mere fact that he can both speed up and slow down makes defending him more difficult.
Finally a film breakdown video 😎
Literally most his videos are film breakdowns
Great footwork, ball control, fakes plus he can shoot. As John Wooden used to say, 'be quick but don't hurry!'
He plays at his pace.. All the great players do. I've slowed down and play at this pace as well and it suits me better.. I've never been a speed demon from jump
Lou will is awesome at that decel slight fade as well
Makes it look SOOOOO easy!
FIBA courts are smaller too--- he was kicking butt in those too.
Lukas physical strength is underrated, definitely helps him play slow
he does not play slow, he plays in all four directions, unlike most that just use their speed.
His speed earn him more space
While accelerating usually pose "more danger" to the mind of opponent which translate to other defender try to block/intercept him, and also quick move usually kind of "telephony move" it screams what are you going to do, and when intercepted attacker has less time and space to change direction
Eli Ellis is one highschool player I follow that actually has the slowness of Luca.
Change of speed is a greater weapon than speed itself.
Luka is super slow and gets so many buckets
Kyle Anderson: Hold my beer
I've been feeling really in control and under my legs when i slow my drives instead of going full throttle. Maybe that's what enables him to make a lot of quick decisions like passing, lob, but I think especially his inverted drags and snatch backs.
I think is more of perception from people on how he plays, he is from Slovenia (ex Yugoslavia) where he had idols like Drazen Petrovic, Toni Kukoc and many other from that area, this is taught.
its crazy how my fave team went from dirk straight to doncic....like the packers went from farve to rodgers...
My biggest weakness is not patient enough when I play and always trying to speed up than slow down lol. Gotta watch more of these guys
I’m the exact opposite
Ye but when u speed up you'll hype yourself up more look at Stephen curry he hypes himself
I used to be a very slow basketball player when I was a teenager. I wish I knew I could have used it as an advantage at the time.
You answer my questions from day 1 i see him play. Thank you.
Got me subscribe your channel. 👍
He plays that way because he is tall enough to. The way he shades his body with angles is crazy. Its like watching Paul Pierce play again but Luka aint even in his prime yet either
so alot of guys who speed up all the time are sacrificing court vision, time to think and feel out the right plays
Yeah but quick players have a good chance on heating up and becoming hot curry plays fast and look how many championships his team got kyries quick play style led to Cavs winning to
I love your viedos!!! Super informative but compact. Keep it up my guy.
🔥🔥🔥My next phase of hoop dreams
Yup. Quickness itself isn't tough. Changes of pace are tough. So if you go slow, you still can chose to go quick or even slower.
When it comes to play off though, this can be an issue bcoz everyone is hyper-active.
luka convinced me that larry bird would still dominate in this era
Excellent analysis.
That’s that Larry Bird Shit… love it
In short: basketball is not primarily a game of speed, but a game of pace (and the change thereof).
The key Luka is hard to push in, so he dribbles as fast or slow as he wants
exactly
Luka is MVP of NBA!!
