Just Genius from Joni !!! What a sublime song !!! She has always been one of my iconic heroes !!! When I first heard the album 'Blue' in the early 1970s it changed everything !!! A total seminal masterpiece !!!! At the same time the other truly superb first album by the late great unique talent Judee Sill !!!!!

Every single spot on that stage is filled with someone who has had a huge impact on jazz in modern times and just music in general. And the fact that they are all together in one band playing music by someone who arguably had a bigger impact on jazz than the entire band combined is crazy. In highschool i dreamt of playing any one of these artist music for a performance but we werent good enough and our director didn’t want to try. Makes me sad because most bands are like that since the directors just want to win arbitrary awards to make sure the school thinks they are doing something right. I could have played moanin’ my senior year but my director thought a dumbed down version of fly me to the moon would be better. Sure the band learned it quick and was able to perfect it a lot better than we would have if we did moanin’. But we were a low rated jazz band so we get nothing from winning. Why not have fun with the song choice?

Joni’s lyrics here display transcendent genius at the highest level, especially setting lyrics to that wonderful saxophone solo and incorporating it in the song here. Whenever I think of Joni, and this band, I just think of that profoundly beautiful phrase ‘love is never easy’…absolute perfection. It does not get any better.
