Nintendo just wants to make sure that their hardware is outdated at launch.
Consoles are always outdated

All I care about is if it is backwards compatible. I have a good switch physical collection and I wanna keep it relevant if possible.
Don't hold your breath, they're going to have to change the cartridge slot somehow because of MiG switch and other piracy devices
Can’t you just continue to play your switch collection on your switch?
@@chris7921 exactly, or via emulator on something like the steam deck or pretty much any modern PC which can easily do it.
I would love for it to be backwards compatible but I think the nail in the coffin is the fact that the Mig switch already exists and the easiest thing they can do is change the shape of the cartridges.
@@chris7921 nope I can’t.
@@Dayman667 I know lots of little boys like you want backwards compatibility but trust me, you can continue playing your old collection of switch games on your current switch, even when a new system comes out.
The launch of the Switch with Breath of the Wild showed them how important having a good killer app is AND all the games that released shortly after March. Mario Kart 8 in April, ARMS in June, Splatoon 2 in July and Mario Odyssey in October. They had a strong first half year of the Switch's life after launch and I'm almost sure they're going to repeat this.

Breath of the wild was on the WiiU too though?
I mean, because the Switch is still selling like hot cakes.
Unpowered and 8 years old it sells better than PS5&Xbox Series combined.
Nintendo learned from the Wii U that they should launch consoles with decent games. Also, maybe they're launching Prime 4 alongside the system as a release title.
Or market the console better. I didn't learn about the Wii U until 2016, when I was at a friend place, asking "What is this thing next to your Wii? Is that a tablet for the Wii?".
Metroid isn’t a big enough franchise to be the marquee launch title.
Plenty of consoles don't come with the greatest line-up at launch and manage to sells millions upon millions.

This is great news for me. I just won a switch lite at my job.
the switch is a amazing system enjoy your nintendo switch
Right now the total Nintendo Switch (and Switch Lite) sales are at 139.3 million, the ps2 is at 155 million. Last year they sold 17.97 million switches, which was about 22% less than in 2022 when they sold 23 million. If in 2024 they experience a similar decrease in sales of 22% from last year's 17.97 million, they'd still sell about 16 million switches, which would be enough to surpass, or at least be on par with the ps2's sales. Give it two more years and I bet they'll surpass the ps2.
it’s not like they’ll immediately stop selling switches after the successor comes out either, i can imagine they could keep it around as a budget option for another year or two, like they did with the 3DS
They surpassed 140m before Xmas, and it's nearly March. When they update with recent sales figures it's going to be a very narrow gap to the PS2.
Exactly that.
They’re still outselling PS5 and Xbox Series which is kind of a kick in the nuts to all those saying that the Switch is too old and slow. Well, apparently that’s not a reason for hardware to sell.
Nintendo has shown for 35 years now that the handheld sector is very important if not the most important in gaming. Mobile games on phones being basically the biggest market for games just shows that.
I also think that by March 2025 the Switch will have surpassed the PS2 and if not, 2025 and 2026 will be the last two years the OG Switch will be supported. They always said that they’re planning for a decade.
Switch already beaten ps2.
Ps2 is sold as the cheapest dvd player, not game console (FACT)
@mChrist
here we go with that bullshit PS2 DVD narrative.
so did the OG xbox has DVD, but it didnt become a monster seller cos of dvd playback clown
the software attach ratio of ps2 is NUMBER 1, if people just bought it for dvd it would be one of the worst.
PS2 is the gaming system which still has the record of highest selling games and highest software attach ratio in history.
the software attach ratio of ps2 is WAY higher than Nintendo Swich.
PS2 sold 1.537 billion games on 155 million consoles according to official Sony data so its 9.82 per console sold
while Nintendo Switch sold 1.2 billion games on 140 million consoles so its 8.25 per console.
PS2 1.537 billion games > Switch 1.2 billion games
PS2 9.82 attach ratio > Switch 8.25 attach ratio
yeah "dvd" alright. dumb ass Nintendorks.
I’ll have you know PS1 broke the all time record for home consoles by breaking the 100 million consoles record and sold 108million consoles. The 2nd best selling console in 90s was SNES which sold less than half of PS1 at 48million units, and NES the best selling console of all time till PS1 only sold 62million. PS1 didn’t have "cheap dvd" then. PS1 & PS2 is a monster and will always be one. PS1-PS2 opened the floodgates of gaming to a BRAND new audience. Thats how PS1 sold more than 2x the SNES the 2nd best selling console of 90s 48million vs 108milliln is INSANE for a FIRST TIME console entrant to just KICK two industry behemoths Sega and Nintendo like that.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was delayed until 2025 because The Switch still prints money. Of course it prints money at a lower percentage than it did last year or the year before. But it still prints! The Switch has been Nintendo's best selling console ever in regards to units sold vs. years on the market. I am certain Nintendo will want to wait as long as they believe they can to release a new console. They do not want to put a stake in the coffin of what they have achieved.
Hopefully they’ll offer an oled option at launch
At this point it should just be the norm for all handheld devices
My guess is that they will have 2 versions at launch switch 2 lite LCD handheld only, switch 2 OLED hybrid
It's going to be very hard for Switch OLED owners to justify a downgrade to LCD.
Im afraid Nintendo will save the OLED for the revision.
I could accept a LCD screen, but a good IPS one with enough nits, color fidelity and VRR. Switch LCD screen sucked so much...
fr its an instant dealbreaker for me if they dont
Super Mario 64 playing in the background 😍
there were articles saying that the delay happens so nintendo can pile up more stock and make it harder for scalpers at launch.
I think switch 2 possibly having backwards compatibility via the og cartridge slot has shown a serious copy protection flaw which they thought they had circumvented with the later revision board....
Why? Because the mig switch flashcart works on all current revisions & I (speculate) believe that Nintendo has checked this with their 'switch 2' & found a potential problem before release and need a year to manufacture protection.
That is a very valid reason, just so that they are ready for the two waves - initial March release for the die hard fans and Christmas
@@mikeuk666 I have a feeling it's something to do with the Mig flash as well, I will not expect switch 2 to be backwards compatible because of that specifically and some other reasons.

The Yen ¥ being weak would be a positive thing for exports. But it isn't made in Japan anyway and the Yen is unlikely a factor in their decision.
The yen being weak and a country in recession is definitely going to impact development cycle's of games, which could impact launch titles. Sony today just axed 900 staff and axed loads of projects. It shit an entire studio down in the UK, and the UK is in recession....
@@yanceyboyzMaybe they'll stop making such mid games now

@@jaaxc1036 but then the manufacturing costs outside of Japan is higher for them. So each Switch 2 will cost more to make
I’ll take a delay to combat scalpers and shortage issues any day. PS5 only started being readily available recently and it’s already in its latter stages.
Eh,the later stages can mean many things.
Later stages can simply mean 2nd half.
So if it's 7 years life cycle as soon as you pass 3 and 1/2 years , you are in later stage.
Plus plans can change and given that this gen didn't properly start until 2022 or so due to Covid and console manufacturing material shortages and game development talking longer and longer I wouldn't be surprised if this gen goes until 2029 or later before PS6 comes.
Documentation that came up during COD trial suggested 2028 plans for PS6.
@@GameslordXYUnfortunately Microsoft rumours point to a potential 2026 launch of their next gen system.
I take that with a grain of salt, especially given how as you've said, it just feels like current gen started 2 years ago, however nothing reignites hype cycles more than brand new console releases, even if they're sold at a loss now by Sony & Microsoft.
Honestly concerned what with the increasingly more aggressive monetization, mass layoffs of devs, attempts to push aside physical media & lack of digital 'ownership', tbh I'm not excited about the next gen of gaming, it looks as though publishers & manufacturers don't wanna acknowledge that their business models are hilariously unsustainable & THEY need to downscale development costs & production, for more AA releases, but instead costs are rising through the roof for us all, live service slop is becoming increasingly more common & digital rights haven't caught up to where they should be, given how cloud gaming is looming over us all.
@@GameslordXY
I think you gotta adjust your expectations.
There’s a reason that a PS 5 Pro is in the works.
The first two years we had 4K 60 fps games (upscaled, but still) or 1440p @ 120 fps.
Now we’re back to 1080p or 1440p@ 60 and 4K@30 albeit the games don’t look that much different or as “next-gen” as one’d expect. In my eyes it’s just lazy devs. If Horizon can run at 60 and look as good and as crisp as it does, there’s no reason for something like Hogwarts Legacy to have 10 visual modes with varying results or anime style games like Granblue Relink running at 1080p 60.
But since dlss has become the cheat code and lazy button for developers and consoles only have shitty AMD, well, you better make yourself ready for the next console generation in 2026. This gen cannot survive another 4 years unless nvidia stops basically (artificially) doubling performance through new dlss tricks and general performance every two years.
@Lock2002ful Hogwarts legacy is a weird one performance wise. Even on PC! I remember it having a really rocky start on PC with massive vram usage. I do wish game optimization was a thing. But then development time is an issue with an in house engine vs off the shelf. When you rely on off the shelf engines your relying on that company's support. Which may or may not happen depending on the issue. It happens elsewhere in the industry and issues end up hitting consumers. But again the amount of time you can save using off the shelf stuff can save time too. In house can take more time for development and can be a mixed bag depending on how much time is taken to optimize. A bigger factor is the open world focus lately. I'd rather have smaller worlds with more dense story or content. I guess I'll just stick to older stuff.
@@jet613
That is very true.
Optimization has been poor from 3rd party studios across the board on consoles and on pc.
But I won’t give those companies a pass just because it takes time and money to make games. That is no excuse whatsoever.
I mean, even indie devs are getting lazy these days with optimization for the Switch.
Moonscars or the new contra run at 30 fps on Switch and they don’t use any graphical or computational stuff the switch couldn’t handle at 60 fps in native resolution.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a prime example of how to do optimization and how to do it right. I don’t know if you’ve seen it but DF has a wonderful video dedicated on that where they also talk to the developers if my memory serves me correctly.
The sad truth is that companies have realized that players will buy everything, even broken messes like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet or games with bad inconsistent fps and frame pacing like Elden Ring.
If they can sell 20 million copies without using another couple of months to optimize they’ll have more money in the bank than if they do optimize and get 22 million copies sold.
That’s the sad truth as I see it. It’s all business and less “for the players”. :/
How can the common thought be that Switch 2 is "Delayed" when the Switch 2 hasn't been announced yet (rumours and speculation have always been stupid to me)
Rumors and speculation may be stupid but it's a natural and enevitable way of gossip since dawn of human beings lmao

@@yanceyboyz i'm not intending to come off as angry here because i'm not but i won't believe anything until Nintendo tells us themselves, not even this
Makes sense if its to make sure Metroid Prime 4 is ready. The biggest complaint about the PS5/Xbox Series generations is that there are no games. It took Microsoft until last year to have games that weren't cross gen.
I really wanna know whether the "Switch 2" is backwards compatible or not. I've actually never bought a Switch but I'm pretty interested in getting one now when looking at how large the games library for that system is. But with us being so close to the next Gen console, it might be better to just get the new one instead (if it's backwards compatible that is).
xcx needs a switch port
on that topic monolith is super silent right now i hope they will have something ready for the next console
Thank you guys for such a great DF discussion like always. I always appreciate your thought points and calm manner of presentation.
I'm all for a more powerful successor with a great launch lineup, but it'll be really hard to go from playing on the OLED system to LCD again. As for launch titles I would love to see them dig into the past and bring back some treasures like Eternal Darkness, Startropics, Earthbound, F Zero, Star Fox, to name a few. Probably won't happen but I hate that they keep visiting the Mario and Smash Brothers well. So many other good properties they have that they ignore. That said, I would give my right arm for Metroid prime 4. 😂
LCD is just a rumour, my guess there will be 2 versions at launch a switch 2 lite with lcd handheld only which will be less $$ and a OLED hybrid this way they really maximise sales
@@jozsefalfaro2350 It would be nice to have a choice, but I don't think Nintendo's ever released two versions of the same system at launch. It's always a down the road kind of thing.
Because Mario & Smash are guaranteed to sell 10+ million copies, unlike the other franchises you mentioned.
I think Nintendo wants to ride out the Switch at least until it beats the PS2 in sales so they can market their next console as the sequel to the world's best selling console
Hope this is all true bcs I was planning on buying the oled next month, since my switch is pretty beat up
The Ampere-based chipset will be a bit dated by then (though I guess the same goes for the Switch's Tegra X1, it first came out in 2015 and Switch came out nearly 2 years later)

I am considering reselling my V2 Switch for about $200-$220 sometime this summer and pool that money towards a Switch 2. I still have the box to this day, and my Joy-Cons have not experienced any drift despite owning the console for nearly 5 years.
hope delaying hardware won't come and bite them (unless the hardware components are not already 3-4 years old, by the time its released.., as Nintendo already uses older components)

Can make the obvious guesses that they are making a new Mariokart for the first time in a decade and a new 3D Mario game. Both of those will be killer apps. I hope Metroid Prime 4 isn't cancelled. But if Nintendo is going to make their first high budget full AAA FPS game it's gonna have to look good against stuff like Doom Eternal, in features/scale. As much as Splatoon titles are both my favorite Nintendo titles on Wii U/Switch and some of my favorite games period they are a little different compared to stuff like that.
Hopefully it’s just the units that are delayed but the announcement hopefully hits this year. (Or this March! 🤞🏼)
i might get one at launch, to never use it until it gets a hardware mod
Imagine what a 8 years gap between Switch 1 & Switch 2 processor can do. We know that mobile technologies vastly improved every year. Between non customised (Switch 1) vs customised (Switch 2) processor it's gigantic advancement in graphics power & efficiency 💪
The gap could be much bigger if Ada Lovelace was used... Releasing 2020 Ampere in 2025 is underwhelming.
It appears Nintendo themselves only have like 1 unique game coming (Princess Peach Showtime, and a couple of remasters), which I think is the biggest indicator of a new console coming soon. Not to mention, Nintendo has never gone more than like 3 years without releasing at least an updated variant of a console/handheld. So I'm thinking sometime between September of this year to March of next year they will very likely release something.
Would love a hybrid like now and a home console “pro”.

A weak Japanese ¥en is not a factor, infact it's an advantage coz economics wise a weak currency is good for exports as it makes your exported products cheaper and more affordable.
Infact Japan has always maintained its ¥en low for that reason to make their exports more competitive.

games issue
It will come out in 2028, according to Video Rig.
Hardware will be out of date by the time it comes out but that’s nintendos way
Yeah it’s based off of Ampere architecture from 2020 so 5 year old technology if it launches in 2025. Nintendo may delay it again to 2026 possible.
They held off Tears of the Kingdom for a year to do bug testing with all the mechanics in the game. With games running into performance issues on current hardware, could they also be using the extra time to make sure first party titles see improvements on Switch 2? It would be a great marketing gimmick showing how much better old games running on it.
Not every game has performance issues. It’s mostly to do with third-party games on the current switch having performance issues but most of the games are solid in terms of performance. People need to stop underestimating the current switch which still clearly has some life left in it.
they could bring twilight princess and windwaker from wii u
If it releases in 2025 it's possible it surpasses the PS2 in sales. Which is not a small thing
If its from what I've heard about supplies im totally fine with that
Maybe... for an OLED screen?
Reason is pretty obvious to me: MIG Switch card, which allows to back-up your original games has caused a major earthquake in Nintendo HQ. Having the Switch 2 backwards compatibility, it is a major flaw to launch the console already jailbroked. Take a look on any MIG Switch card analysis on UA-cam and you'll see the magnitude of the problem for the big N.
Nintendo need to solve the issue because the new switch needs to be backwards compatible with the current switch. That is an absolute must, and for me that will be a big L for the Nintendo if it’s not backwards compatible.
Whatever they do, the Switch game library better transfer over to Switch 2, if not I'm done with Nintendo

If they already purchased the chips, which they have, if the yen is down, they should be rushing to market
Have you ever been asked to cosplay wreck it ralph?
You should.
I would argue that full backwards compatibility with enhancements (up-res and locked frame rates), would be a killer app.
Imagine Astral chain, Zelda Totk, XC2/3 etc...at 4k 30fps locked
How about 4k 60fps instead; I mean, why not aim for the moon.

@@jorgerincon6874 yuzu, ryujinx can do it with various success, but that requires one to also have a capable pc.
From my understanding and experience, the emulators still perform the dynamic res scaling which gives it an odd upscale look. For example, monster Hunter rise didnt look that great imo.
If switch 2 can do this at native res without dynamic scaling, that would be a win.
Really more power is not a selling point? Ok whatever well for me more power is a plus with backwards compatibility. And I be there on day one. 😂
Its pretty simple. They dont want to curb sales of what could have been this holiday season if they 1. dont have enough switches 2 to meet demand, which means 2. that people will wait for new stock and not buy the original switch. I'll predict that Nintendo is building up stock and has been for several months now. It will go on to be the largest Console launch in history of day 1 units sold, thanks to this year+ long production build up.
The last game I bought for my switch was tears of the Kingdom, every game since then I haven't bothered with and I think there's a lot of people in the same boat.

I think this is the biggest factor for launching it, as well as the software. If they can have at least 3-4 big titles released from launch date through the first 6 months, it will help really boost sales. A new 3D Mario game, new Mario Kart, new Super Smash Bros, and some potentially big re-makes like Luigis Mansion 2 and Galaxy 2 could fill out the lineup. Backwards compatibility is necessary to makes sure it succeeds as well, which I would not think would be a huge issue. NSO should carry over seamlessly as well.
@@gdn86 the thing is if it was backwards compatible the lineup for launch would be huge, it is another reason I believe that it won't be backwards compatible on top of the obvious Mig switch cartridge issues.
Delaying something that they never announced?
It's stupid people making assumptions based on baseless rumors/leaks there were 'supposedly' credible. But they have no credit. We've had 'SWITCH PRO IS COMING' rumors every single year until people figured it was too late for a Switch Pro, which never came. Now those same rumors have been converted to 'SWITCH 2 IS COMING' and when a successor is finally is announced they'll be like 'I KNEW IT WAS COMING'.

There's no shortage of them making videos based on rumors that turned out to be complete bollocks, always with the excuse that 'oh but they changed plans' every single time they're wrong.

Simple, they want the switch to surpass the PS2 lifetime sales. They’re currently at 140 million (approximately) so one more year would have them beat that record.
They won't discontinue Switch instantly with the release of Switch 2, you know. That is not the reason.
Well Nintendo better delay their announcement of the Switch 2. Or else most people won't buy Switch 1, and simply wait Switch 2. However, I do feel like some people are just waiting for the Switch, and the games to get price cut. Got stretch your dollar. Based on Statista website, PS2 sold over 158 million units for their lifetime sales.
I think switch 2 possibly having backwards compatibility via the og cartridge slot has shown a serious copy protection flaw which they thought they had circumvented with the later revision board....
Why? Because the mig switch flashcart works on all current revisions & I (speculate) believe that Nintendo has checked this with their 'switch 2' & found a potential problem before release and need a year to manufacture protection....
Nintendo doesn't care about that. They care about their bottomline. The whole having to surpass PS2 sales is nothing but fanboy wars.
I don’t think so, it’s just really hard to follow up on a great success, as PS3 initially didn’t sell as expected, nor 3DS and apparently now, even PS5 didn’t meet business expectations. So there’s the stock buildup to be able to meet demand, the right software to catapult your new system with, bc issues to solve, high prices, industry decline and the fact that Nintendo always aims to surprise. I believe they’ll lift the lid after March 31st as their financial years ends, and build up throughout the year towards a launch in Spring 2025.
Yeah what happened to Metroid prime 4? It better be a launch title on the new switch.
My question is, if the hardware was ready long ago, wouldn’t it be very outdated powerwise by 2025? (Even for nintendo standards)

1. Yen inflation has created a situation where Taiwanese, Korean, and Vietnamese labor all is too high of a cost with where the Yen is right now. Japan’s financial sector predicts that to come back to a sensible position late 2024, which makes early 2025 the right time to spend big on a huge manufacturing run, of a new console which has been done with design for some time.
2. Nintendo knows with another year of SALES, both hardware and software, they can unload ALL inventory, to younger gamers, females and developing nations primarily with the pending sizable discounts.
3. Nintendo also knows that with this huge sale inventory unload …. They have a very real chance to eclipse the PS2 sales record of 155-158million consoles sold, at some point in 2025…. This achievement may not mean much to hardcore gamers …. But it means ALOT of FREE MARKETING that can be utilized and “TIDE OVER” into free marketing for the Switch 2 launch shortly thereafter….
4. Nintendo also knows that with this additional time, their teams can polish launch games much more, and even finish some additional titles for the first year line up, all helping it ensure the Switch2 launch is massively successful, and maintains all existing momentum of the Switch, while building upon it with even more features, spec bumps, and 3rd party support.
It is still possible to delay it internally and not been officially announced.
Waiting for 4k. Could you imagine playing a game like Mario odyssey in 4k?
also, Mario Kart with 60fps 4P split screen please
Pc players already do
Yeah, and I wouldn't do it. Games designed for particular resolutions look wrong at significantly blown up resolutions. Especially 90s and below.
Why do these podcast videos have such a low volume compared to their other videos?
Because these podcast videos focus on misinformation and unsubstantiated rumors.
@@sabinfire You have to misinform people quietly in case you get in trouble??
Cant talk to loud or the youtube algorithm will inform nintendo
Given the release date of the next Pokemon, they could have delayed it so that it'd be a launch title.
Could be hardware part dalays.... most likely its to wait for the games to get ready...
I think switch 2 possibly having backwards compatibility via the og cartridge slot has shown a serious copy protection flaw which they thought they had circumvented with the later revision board....
Why? Because the mig switch flashcart works on all current revisions & I (speculate) believe that Nintendo has checked this with their 'switch 2' & found a potential problem before release and need a year to manufacture protection..
New Metroid game would be awesome for launch , plus remaster Twilight Princess. That he an awesome launch
Why is every channel screaming that the Switch 2 is delayed to 2025? Nintendo didnt even announce it to release in 2024 in the first place Pointless discussion. And if you look back at the beginning of the Switch, Nintendo told that the Switch would be in the market for at least to the year 2025.
Cause Nintendo wants to BEAT the PS2 in Sales with the Switch so they *extended* it's lifespan...
This is their Best shot to achieve this!
WHAT IF
the switch has a clamshell design with dual screens??
virtual console with DS, 3DS and WiiU games?
and still 100% backwards compatible with the first switch
and I need you guys to talk about the new dual screen aya neo !!
Day 1 buy for me tbh, but I know everyone would not agree.
I would 100% buy that at launch if it has compatibility with actual games carts (similar to how 360 games play on the xbox one and Series X).
What wii u games arent already available on switch? I cant think of anything besides windwaker and twilight princess and also xenoblade chronicles x. And those games dont require 2 screens
@@kevinfoughtwas just a guess from me tbh. never had a WiiU or a Switch. didn't think nintendo actually ported so many WiiU games already
@@sneakygurl you’re right, and I do not agree, a dual green switch back to the days of a bygone error of the 3DS which is not needed it’s great having to just have one screen we don’t need such an old gimmick I just want to switch 2 to be more powerful and unique selling point will be social, media focused like Arlo said and it will have a camera and it will be able to record up to a minute of your gameplay footage instead of the last 30 seconds with the current switch and it will have improved joy cons with no more joy drift, I believe it will cost at least $350 rather than $400.
You can't risk botching the Switch's successor if you never release it.
Get ready for breath of the wild remake on switch 2
Remaster
that would be interesting... tho' I do like the art style already in BOTW & TOTK
No remaster, complete edition
I really hope this new console is powerful and hope they get rid of the joycons. Love to have a nes style d pad for portable use.
They love to launch a system once the hardware is considered old and crappy also. I have a feeling the next switch will be two gens behind and not very good.
How can something that does not have a release date be delayed, oh wait, it can't.
Internal delays exist, the Switch 1 went through one as well. Hell, Street Fighter 6 saw multiple.
is that confirmed?
If switch 2 is backwards compatible and 3rd parties rush to port over last Gen games that will now run, we're looking at a potentially immense catalog on a single system, maybe one of the best in the history of gaming
And miss Xmas season?
The Switch released in March 2017. I don’t think they care.
Probably the mig switch made them delay the switch 2 if it's backwards compatible
It wasn’t even announced for 2024, so how can it be delayed until 2025? 🤷♂
I think the real Nintendo gimmick will be lack of backwards compatibility. Then they can resell you switch 1 games.
I hope they name it the Switch U
