- He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)
My father is buried near the castle that appears at 2:38. The town is called Torrelobatón, and it is in the center of The Old Castille.
We must distinguish between the literary Cid and the historical Cid. Of the literary there is little to discuss, since it is based on a few written poems. That is the Cid that I prefer, because he chisels the prototype of the Castilian, of the frontiersman, accustomed to fighting for his land, oblivious to the ancient honor of the Asturians and Leonese, always faithful to his word and defender of the weak, rebellious and courteous to the other, stoic and tough, long-suffering and ascetic, unyielding and courageous.
The reciters passed through the villages of Castile in the Middle Ages and recited the verses of the Poem. In school, we learned those lines by heart. Thus was born Castile, land of my father and soul of Spain.
Saw this as a young child when it was released, one of the first movies I saw in a cinema( the first one was Taras Bulba). Needless to say, it impacted me for the rest of my life and after multiple viewings it still does.
Dispite the Hollywood version of El Cid, the movie holds true to epic poem the Song of El CID. Also, most of the historical elements hold true. It's a great movie.
@themailman43 short answer yes. The Alomavides were conservative Muslims. They found their brother Muslims in Spain too liberal for their tastes so they took over. The meeting with ben Yusuf is stylized but the Spanish Moors asked for his help as the Christians were advancing. Thus the saying: better a camel herder in the Maghrib than a swine herder in Castile. Not all Spanish Moors sided with ben Yusuf as they got a better deal with Alphonso than with ben Yusuf.
Not the best movie ever made but certainly the greatest. Has it all. God forgive anyone who tries to remake this epic.

His wife Jimena remained as Ruler of Valencia for some years after Rodrigo's death, but the Almoravids were able to retake the city in 1105. Valencia remained a sovereign Muslim kingdom being reconquered by king James I of Aragon in 1238, when it became a sovereign Christian kingdom under the federal Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Valencia, Majorca, Sicily, Franch-Comté, Languedoc and Rousillon)
We now know, after 52 years of later comparisons, that this is the best film ever made.

Yes he did. He was neutral and that virtue he expressed was a true Christian value which is tolerating all kinds of people. However he was a kind of post Visigothic era dux or Duke that meant that he had his own army protected his own lands and did mostly to what he pleases as the authority is trusted on him by the King whom he pleaded fealty to.
Other than that he is more of a Duke who ran his own show. The Muslims in Córdoba were tolerant of Christians 100-200years prior to Cid and the Christian Visigoths in the MUslim Caliphate were treated well could learn and do viable business. Create art called Mozarabic art which had Eastern influence and Visigothic Germanic and Roman influences. Very unique.

Fanjul has a hard review for writers who idealize the Muslim past of the peninsula. We have reached levels of freedom thanks to belonging to European culture and the Latin. Human rights, coexistence and the place of women in our society are issues that I am unwilling to give up, "he concludes.
Herbert Lom was brilliant in this. We never see his whole face, just ferocious eyes. Excellent acting.

By the way, Campeador is not Champion in 11th Century Castille. The original title he was given was "Campidoctoris" or "Campiductor", which means "Field Champion". "Field Champion" was a battlefield honour given only to Nobles or Alefrez's that had never lost a single battle. Rodrigo never lost a battle in his life.

Both sides had freedom or religion, both sides protected each others' faithful, and mutual persecutions along 900 years are just a handful.They tried to concentrate in what united them: culture and learning; and not what separated them: politics. This openness included the Jews. Back and forth conversions between Islam and Christianity were voluntary.

Alfonso VI was defeated at the battle of Zalaca, and again gave called Don Rodrigo to his service and commissioned him several feudal domains in 1086. In this second stage Castile launched a Reconquest in the Eastern Regions, managing to make the Muslim kings of Albarracin and Valencia to pay tribute to Castile and conquered vast territories controlled by the Almoravids Muslims.
King Alfonso compensated Rodrigo marrying him to Royal blood: Jimena Díaz in 1074, great-granddaughter of King Alfonso V. Rodrigo repaid by serving the Sultan of Seville (an enemy of Castile) and was accused of disloyalty to the king, thus Alfonso VI banished Rodrigo in 1081 and broke his liege/vassal relationship. Rodrigo went to still Muslim Zaragoza to serve both Emir al-Muqtadir and his son Emir al-Mu'tamin.
So much for a religion of peace.

No, actually Portugal was just another kingdom, the only one which retained their independence in the last moment (though they became temporarily part of a unified Spain = Hispania in the XVI century). The king Alfonso VI of Castille, Leon and Asturias, just because he was granted the crown of Leon and recovered the ancient Visigothic capital (Toledo), was in legal terms to sign his documents as "Imperator totius Hispaniae" as well as similar kind.
Though he died in bed in real life, not during the siege...Still, his seed produced great heroes that reconquered what his wife lost three years after he died. His daughters married the heirs to the throne of Navarre and Aragon. From this lines come King James the Conqueror of Aragon, who recovered Valencia from the muslims. Also Saint Ferdinand III of Castille and Saint Louis IX King of France.

Rodrigo again changed sides with the Amlohade Muslims and at the height of Almoravid power in the Peninsula, he took Valencia from them in 1094. He remained as Sidi al-Balansí, Lord Of Valencia.

Of course, the real Cid was often villainous, and the real Ben Yusef was often heroic, but the movie has to color them purely good and evil. It's ironic that this African emir in his opening speech condemns doctors and science, since the real Ben Yusef was justifiably proud of the medicines his Islamic doctors had created--the first antibiotics ever. The Moorish nation shared their medical discoveries with the world, including Spain.

Yes but "Hispania" wasn't Spain.The modern term Spain is a derivative from Hispania but it is not the same thing altogether, Spain is a modern concept, far more recent than EL CID. Hispania included part of what is Portugal today and France. So who is the stupid now??? Britain still is what Britania was, that is the difference.

@CSATexan Thats the problem. What happend to Islam is same that happened here in Europe with Ideological Radicalism since French Revolution. Islam had its counterpart with Islamic Radicalism that has nothing to do with True Traditional Islam. That for most part was destroid by Western Impearlism and European Colonialism.

Even Darth Vader, before he became Darth Vader, was a loving man who went the wrong path; ideologically, I'm not sure even Ben Yusef could be accused of that, as Muhammed did indeed command the spreading of Islam through conquest. Not substantially different from the evangelic commission of Jesus to the disciples.
