- El Cid ending, one of the best parts of this epic road show picture. El Cid taking a arrow to the heart in a previous battle, demands that he rides out the next day despite his fatal injury. Thus restoring the morale of his men and then to charge on to victory. And thus the cid, road out of the gates of history, into legend.

I am 70 years old and I have seen many movies, but only 3 have marked my life and the 3 are carried out by the same actor, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur and El Cid, I do not care about the other opinions, but I always admired Charlton Heston, and he will always be the best actor of all time for me.
Totally agree with you!
Also liked him as Will Penny which was a western.
👋
wonderful choices.
……& a lovely man to meet, & have conversation with, along with his beautiful wife, Lydia. They’re both gone now……RIP
I can imagine an absolute roar of applause in theaters as El Cid emerges from the Keep, choreographed perfectly and synced with the organs playing. There are epic endings, and then there is this.
Only prime Hollywood at its extravagant best could come up with a film and musical score like this. Even Lord of the Rings looks greatly deflated after seeing this film again. A rare production, and almost worthy of the purest Knight of all-the great EL CID, who in the deepest humility, served His Lord God, and the Spanish King, loyal to a fault. Amen!
I bought this earlier and it's a film I always remembered as a kid a dead king charging the enemies on horse back. Didn't know it was the same film when bought it . Is there any other films we're they put the king on horde back remember the film different as a kid

There is another film called Kryczazy (1960) great scenes of the battles. That film had a great quality for being a not-Hollywood production. The Cid is another masterpiece for sure.

How do you realy know
Very iconic words.
Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar better to be known as El Cid, a Castilian nobleman, an undefeated military leader in medieval Spain and before the golden age of the Templars.
Wrong , the Templars were founded years after his death.
It's during the reconquista and crusades Rodrigo de Vivar didn't live long enough to witness the founding of the Knights Templar (Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, 1119) El Cid died in 10th of July 1099 (5 days before crusader siege of Jerusalem will end)
@@javier6926 yes its 2 decades after El Cid's demise and after the first crusade

Truly one of the greatest endings in cinematic history.
What about Forest Gump!
What makes this scene so riveting, is that, according to history, when El Cid was mounted on his horse, he was already dead, from wounds received, in an earlier battle. He was tethered into his saddle so that he would not fall, and his right hand was affixed to his staff, so that it would not drop. This was one of the most dynamic endings, in the history of film.
This always sends chills up my spine. The organ solo, a work of genius whilst the glare from the Cid's helm blinds the Berber army. Inimitable.
El cid was a clever man he sided with sides rhsr were stronger he switched back and forth for his own gain
its a fantasy that feeds conflicts even today.

What a man! Only Heston could have played this scene without looking silly. We no longer have any actors male enough who could play el Cid Campeador!
Tom Hardy or Daniel Day Lewis might be able to fill the roll. More Lewis than anything.

@@keysersoze5920 I don't know, but it was perfect.
Heavenly father open your arms to receive the soul of one who lived and died the purest knight of all.
I hate to admit it, but the end of this movie is overpoweringly emotional to me ever time. I remember when my father took me and my sister to see this back in 1961, he said not to tell my mother that Charlton Heston dies in it. She was his number one fan.
When I first saw this scene a memory was triggered in me. I had, from my mother, a sixth grade reading book, with a section titled "Heroes from other lands" I recognized El Cid as being one of those stories when they got to the part about propping him up on his horse with the the bar to keep him upright. This book would have been in use, in Kansas, in the 1940's, so it's pretty cool. There were also short fiction stories set in other countries, particularly Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia. Quite a breadth of cultural exposure for the time and the place.
Lovely story, Denise. Thanks for sharing that particular memory, speaking as it does to an America within which ordinary normal Americans grew up to learn all about the wider world around them and to savour the different cultural histories. There's something especially poignant about the fact that your Mom was growing up in Kansas in the 1940s because -- all too sadly, as the events at The Capitol on January 6th amply demonstrated -- I've a feeling, Toto, that we're not in Kansas any more. Big thanks again.
Back when there was no CGI and things were epic as fuck...
The last time i felt that was when I watched kingdom of heaven..
Mr Pink sadly kingdom of heaven was a very unfair representation and historically inaccurate. It had the modern flavor of Christianity is bad, Islam is noble, it’s actor had a 21st century conscience...
So you know, this isn't exactly historically accurate either. If you want that, plenty of documentaries to watch.
@@martyconroy3786 absolutely agree. But I think there is a point perhaps to be made that the Kingdom of Heaven protagonists seem very modern in their outlooks. A generation or two past it was probably easier to have the religious or premodern attitude. I think it is hard for writers and actors to really get themselves out of a 21st century attitude.
CGI in Koh

Benjamin Prabhu Of course you know the film and ending were pure Hollywood fantasy. Historically El Cid played both sides of the fence fighting for the Christians and the Moors, a hired sword. Jimena had four children. Only two daughters are shown in film.
Nate Album but it was partially based off of the legend around the cid, not the real guy.
According to my research:
In 1082, on behalf of al-Muʿtamin, he inflicted a decisive defeat on the Moorish king of Lérida and the latter’s Christian allies, among them the count of Barcelona. In 1084 he defeated a large Christian army under King Sancho Ramírez of Aragon. He was richly rewarded for these victories by his grateful Muslim masters.
So I stand by what I said. He was a mercenary who played both sides of the fence. El CID was out for El CID. Valencia was his ultimate prize and he did what he had to do to get it. A hired sword
He had one son and two daughters. His son Diego Rodríguez died fighting against the Almoravids in the service of Alfonso in 1097. Look it up.
The movie was pure Hollywood fantasy.
"According to my research…" According to mine, you are pompous ass, who completely missed the point of this movie. And it was not documentary.
@@natealbum4456 the Reconquista was real. Re conquered from the Muslims. El Cid was a Christian from beginning to end. Facts are facts despite Hollywood flourish.
This film still rocks today
One of the classic medieval movie scenes ever.
If I remember correctly, he died before the final battle... the wife (Ximena I think) had the idea to have the generals prepare the body and put him on the horse and ride with the corpse fully armored... only his presence in the battlefield caused a huge commotion in the enemy and allies as wellº. Only his presence won the battle, then he was buried as a hero and savior
God Bless my fellow Knight/Chavalier, my tear saw love for all of us on this planet
The organ music when El CID steps out of the gates and when he is seen riding past the praying knights gets me every time.

"El CID" FILMED IN SPAIN at the famous Spanish coastal town of Peniscola, with its huge Moorish era "Castle on the beach". (Roughly halfway between Tarragona & Valencia). A genuine fishing village when filmed in 1961, but sadly the film resulted in wall to wall tourist Hotels within just a few years. Which destroyed this little towns medieaval flavour, so now it looks more like Miami Beach in Florida USA today !!!
And that corpse is still riding that horse to this day...
Same horse.
And Legend has it even to this day he still rides on his horse guarding the borders of Spain. A true legend of Spain 🇪🇸

a movie that is more inspirational in this era than it was when first produced. Europe needs a heroic champion in the face of being overrun.

What an ending!
El Cid, greatest film ever
Based on a true story. These EPIC'S are no longer made. Long live the "CID"
History is key:.
“ El Cid found work fighting for the Muslim rulers of Zaragoza, whom he defended from its traditional enemy, Aragon. While in exile, he regained his reputation as a strategist and formidable military leader. He was repeatedly victorious in battle against the Muslim rulers of Lérida and their Christian allies, as well as against a large Christian army under King Sancho Ramírez of Aragon. In 1086, an expeditionary army of North African Almoravids inflicted a severe defeat to Castile, compelling Alfonso to overcome the resentment he harboured against El Cid. The terms for El Cid's return to Christian service must have been attractive enough since Rodrigo soon found himself fighting for his former lord. Over the next several years, however, El Cid set his sights on the kingdom-city of Valencia, operating more or less independently of Alfonso, while politically supporting the Banu Hud and other Muslim dynasties opposed to the Almoravids. He gradually increased his control over Valencia; the Islamic ruler, Yahya al-Qadir [es], became his tributary in 1092. When the Almoravids instigated an uprising that resulted in the death of Al-Cádir, El Cid responded by laying siege to the city. Valencia finally fell in 1094, and El Cid established an independent principality on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. He ruled over a pluralistic society with the popular support of Christians and Muslims alike.”
I saw this when it first came out. I was a scoffing teenager at the time, an American kid lucky enough to be living his first year in Europe, and maybe I still am a scoffing teenager, but I was wowed by this ending. Unbeliever or not I admired the medieval purity of the feeling this scene conveyed. I note that for years I've misremembered the last line. I thought it was "...The most perfect knight of Christendom." I was also wowed by "Ben Hur" which came out at about the same time. In the decades (and dozens of movies, and two tours in the Vietnam War, and the right wing attack on the American people) since 1961 I had plenty of time to get tired of Charlton Heston's swaggering foolishness.
Do it again Cid and clean up Europe! we need you.
His spirit will come again and save Europe. Glory to heroes!
er... El Cid spent much of his life fighting for the Muslims. He had no quarrel with them. It was just a way of life for him. Sometimes he fought against them. Sometimes with them.
Too late. Europe is quickly being turned into matchsticks.
The Cid and Charles Martel.
You fascist son of a bitch
Only seen the movie once ages ago, wish it was on TV more often.
El Cid came from the Arabic word Al-Sayyed or assayed, which means (sir, master).
The Arab Islamic history is so huge to the point that many Muslims have never heard of this character.
The Umayyad state ruled from southern France to the borders of China. Imagine the amount of external and internal events and conflicts within this history extending from the dawn of Islam to the Ottoman Empire.
When Hollywood had respect for any history.
The Cid rides into legend.

I am sure the Spanish Army has given the English a black eye, many times. With that being said, God bless and good luck to one and all.
No crappy cgi here. All of the sets and backgrounds were real. Real castles, real crowds of hundreds for the battle scenes, real siege engines rolling laboriously forward. They couldn't get enough money to finance a film like this today. This is a film about chivalry, honor, and commitment to a cause, even at the pain of death. Does anyone even care about making a film epitomizing these virtues anymore?
