@@dirtpillow5073 agree. This one kinda lost it touch. And in the middle, the Suling turns into generic melody, not as "authentic" as the beginning. Maybe it because of the beat, idk. Because Roland Rizzo is the composer. His work hasn't always been the most authentic, unfortunately. Inca theme also sounded like a bit too Medieval European. Maya theme, while really good, was really detached from what actual Mayan music sounded.
Why it feels so Sundanese rather than Javanese or Balinese? Sunda music has more distinct characteristics than Java to Bali. For example: the bamboo flute emphasis, while Javanese and Balinese both have more emphasis to gamelan. Sunda also had its own well respected kingdom: Tarumanagara, which influenced the western part of Java Island. While many kingdoms and sultanates in central & eastern part of Java as well as Bali were more influenced by Majapahit. Anyway, if there will be Tarumanagara, this will be a very good choice. Love this music.
Not even malacca who was arguably had more say on regional affairs compared to taruma , heck even srivijaya wpuld be more understandable. Do not expect taruma be included any time soon
I wonder if the composer knows about the history between Majapahit and Sunda Kingdom, especially regarding Bubat Incident that led to the sv1cide of Princess Dyah Pitaloka of Sunda Kingdom.
I know that everyone here is a bit upset that the music is Sundanese and not Javanese, hence not representing the Majapahit Empire. However, i like to interpert this as a scenario of : "What if the union between Sunda and Majapahit actually happen?" What if Hayam wuruk actually got the royal wedding and Gadjah Madha did not intervene, it would make a pretty interesting alternate history in my opinion
bleh, this sounds like westernized Sundanese music, this is a miss this is coming from a Sundanese btw EDIT: was this really based on Cacandran BUT without following Pelog and instead using the standard western notation? no wonder the music falls apart

Door Monster reference!
Never thought it would be such a banger
Now it's going to be stuck in my head the rest of the week
The music is Sundanese style but the main character is Majapahit...for some this may sounds ironic but for many centuries in history, Sunda kingdom were considered by Majapahit aristocrats as the true equals and true allies. Repeated marriage ties between Javanese aristocrats and Sundanese aristocrats were also foster the ties closer. A ties that were in one point breaking down after Grand Minister a.k.a Mahapatih Gajah Mada ambition become the main culprit of Bubat Incident that killed Sunda king along with his beautiful princess that were supposedly marry Majapahit king Hayam Wuruk at that day.
It's a beautiful music! I've read some comments from other civilization which criticize and appreciate the art background. If I may, I would love to tell that if Indonesia or in here Majapahit are maritime nation logically they should include the ship or ocean seafarer's or Kampung Bajau which more iconic to the water kingdom compared to inland mountain. But if the civilization context here are Sundanese kingdom, tropical mountain ridge with upland kampung are suitable for the BG art
This is Sundanese "Kacapi Suling" types of music and Majapahit is a Javanese kingdom, as a Sundanese and fans of CiV I really appreciate you guys included Sundanese music with mixed modern and Javanese gamelan👏👏
But, it would be more pleasing if you guys make seperate civilization or characters in CiV VII for the Sundanese, we also have rich history and unique culture that would be a pity to be missed
I wish they actually had an actual Kecapi player for this theme. The harp just doesn't hit it to be truly authentic.
@@wildannugrahanurdinsyah2797 as a Javanese, I would support Tarumanagara kingdom or Sunda kingdom to use this music. Majapahit was infamous to Sundanese due to Bubat War 😁
@@dirtpillow5073 atleast they include the tarawangsa instrument here, it will sound more Sundanese if they also include the karinding
@@dirtpillow5073 Yeesss I didnt realize this is Kecapi Suling music until the flute comes at 0:12 the "Kecapi" sound here is too soft I don't know what kind of zither they used lol
@@wildannugrahanurdinsyah2797 it's too soft because it's just a regular harp. I think the reason is they couldn't hire actual Indonesian players for this genre of music. They should've stuck to Gamelan, coz they can easily use apps for it instead. 😔
funky songs to explore the seas to
wow, that goes hard! in my top 5 for sure so far
I think those gamelan percussion in the end should have been more present throughout the entire piece. But good music!
I'm pretty sure they chose Sundanese music this time. This is literally Kecapi and Suling, but I think they used a Western harp instead of a Kecapi for this.
@dirtpillow5073 oh interesting! I did not know about Sundanese music before this. Thank you for sharing.
Though, Majapahit was still a Java-based empire, no? What island is Sundanese from?
@@baku_m_salti3128The western half of Java, actually. They were literal rivals to the Majapahit. You might see comments here explaining why this wasn't a good music choice because of that fact. 😂
@@baku_m_salti3128 both are on java, but different ethnic group and language altogether (although the same broader Austronesian group).
Majapahit was mainly centered in Central and East Java, while Sundanese people are in Western Java.
It's kind of like English vs Scottish, which is fitting because Majapahit (Javanese) tried to conquer Sundanese Padjadjaran Kingdom (West Java) and failed.
So the music choice is rather ironic, it's like using Scotland the Brave bagpipes to represent medieval England.
Padjadjaran Kingdom is a rival of Javanese Majapahit Empire during medieval period
Sundanese and Javanese were believed to be a "far sibling" tribes because there's a theory that many of Javan's king were the descendant from some Sundanese royal nobleman
The distinction betwern Javan society and Sundanese society is that Javanese had develop a more feudal and urbanist society and the Sundanese rather keep their traditional-rural and egalitarian-pacifist society
During the Hayam Wuruk's reign, Gajah Mada were apppointed as a respected prime minister of Majapahit and the advisor of the King
Gajah Mada suggested the King to initiate a royal marriage between him and the daughter of the Padjadjaran's King, Citraresmi Dyah Pitaloka
Gajah Mada (assumed) has ulterior motive to "conquer" Sundanese kingdom through marriages but he never tell the King of his real intention
The King only assumed this wedding to make an alliance with the Sundanese kingdom
It's believed Majapahit's kings never wanted conquer Sundanese kingdom, they can't conquer them by force or subdued them because it's believed Raden Wijaya (the founder of Majapahit) have a lineage to the Sundanese nobles and they always respected the noble lines
The Padjadjaran King, Maharaja Linggabuana Wisesa, accepted the marriage then proceeds with massive carriages consists of 100 members of noble families and royal guards, leaving only his last son who still 9yo, some of his old relatives and some of their ministers in the Palace
During their way to the capital of Majapahit in Trowulan, they were encamped at Bubat Square regency north of Tworulan
Gajah Mada then seeing this as opportunity going with hundreads of soldiers march to the Bubat Square order an envoy to ask the Sundanese King if he would submit his power to the Majapahit kingdom
The Sundanese's nobles were shocked and feels cheated by the news. The king angrily asks the envoy to tell Gajah Mada to cancel the wedding and they would immidiately leave the scene
During the process, Gajah Mada stopped the member of the family who want to flee to the harbor in the north, they circled the encampent and the whole Bubat Suqare. Gajah Mada asks again would the Sundanese submit their kingdom to the Majapahit Empire and stated their daughter would be a token of submission and would be treated nicely
Humiliated by the speech, Maharaja Linggabuana Wisesa ordered all of his royal guards and male relatives to draw their weapon, strengthen their stance, and ready for war and to make a way for the females to escape to the port
Seeing the King not agree with the offer, Gajah Mada ordered his army to attack and skirmish battled happen in Bubat Sqare. This would be known as Bubat War or Pasunda Bubat in Parataton, Carita Parahyangan and Kidung Sunda scripts
All Sundanese nobles were annihilated during that war including the king and his daughter, some of the noble females family who were captured including Princess Citraresmi Dyah Pitaloka, committed a suicide called 'Bela Pati' in order to defend Honour and Dignity not only to their king and their kingdom but to themselves too

Every Roland Rizzo track has the exact same beat and the exact same thudding string instrumentation
He never really got over composing for Civ 6's medieval themes.
This is good stuff!
Oh my god what a banger.
This will be on my loop list for the next 5+ years until a new CIV game gets released once again
It is a good theme, but compared to the other nations, the beat and drumming with the western instruments feels out of place. They should have focused on the kecapi and suling and a hint of the Gamelan if they are going to use Sundanese instruments.
This is the best so far
This song is unmistakably Indonesian, ironically from the Sunda region, historically mortal enemy of Majapahit...
also there's an urban legend that a Javanese may not marry with a Sundanese 😁
@@steveadinegoro good point!
Sunda empire!
hahaha true
@@RadenVijaya Its only become a mortal enemy thanks to Gajah Mada reckless decision tho. Before that, Sunda kingdom were Majapahit most treasured allies that were considered as full equals in Majapahit court thanks repeated marriages between Majapahit and Sunda aristocrats.
Kinda underwhelming to hear this one after the grande glorious Indonesia's Civ 6 one. Even to this day I still play it on Spotify.
Sundanese music itself actually rocks. This one felt a bit inauthentic. Too much Medieval Europe vibe and it uses a harp instead of an actual Kecapi. The beat is too repetitive and predictable and there's less improvisation on the Suling. But I guess it's still a good theme if we just take it as it is.
@@dirtpillow5073 agree. This one kinda lost it touch. And in the middle, the Suling turns into generic melody, not as "authentic" as the beginning. Maybe it because of the beat, idk. I have nothing against Sundanese (despite the inaccurate lore on Majapahit here lol) it just, Civ6 feels more glorious to me.
@yohanesatreides4131 Same. It's like the intro is the only authentic thing about it. But that's basically what happens when the composer is Roland Rizzo. Try listening to the other themes he composed compared to Geoff Knorr. He honestly doesn't get the actual spirit of the music he's suppose to emulate and ends up falling back to clichés like Medieval Europe beats or white people's perception on other culture's music. Not my favorite composer.
I couldn't seem to accurately depict what I am feeling right now. As a Javanese Indonesian, seeing the civilization of my ancestor brought to life by my favorite game feels, awe-inspiring.
Ps. I know we had a rendition of Majapahit in Civ 6 or in games like Europa Universalis. But some things about Civ VII feels.. different. This is going to be a great game.

THANK YOU FOR FINALLY CALLING IT MAJAPAHIT!
God it was frustrating because the previous name of Indonesia is just not accurate. Far Eastern folks of modern Indonesia WERE NOT part of Majapahit, not even as vassals! This is a much more accurate and inclusive name!
And now the music choice is inaccurate because this is Sundanese and they were famously against Majapahit. 😂
@@hendriksidarta8053 far eastern folk ? Which one ? As far as banggai and moluccas. The was not even a proper kingdom or a sulatnate prior to 1350. Most of eastern indonesian kingdom history began as early as 1400 right after majapahit navy touched down on their shores. Banggai kingdom and buton kingdom are the example of how their progenitor are actually still part of rajasa dynasty.

it’s more Sundanese music, previously they chose javanese in V and balinese in VI. that why it’s sound different. indonesia is so rich in music culture. different ethnic have their own instruments.
It's unmistakably Indonesian, from Sunda region, which is historically mortal enemy of Majapahit 😂

I know that everyone here is a bit upset that the music is Sundanese and not Javanese, hence not representing the Majapahit Empire. However, i like to interpert this as a scenario of :
