    Sanding cast iron is a common mistake that many enthusiasts make in an attempt to restore their cookware. While the intent may be to remove rust or imperfections, this process can inadvertently strip away the seasoning, leaving the surface vulnerable and unprotected. If you've found yourself in this predicament, you might be wondering if acid etching could be a viable solution.
    Acid etching involves using acidic substances to remove layers of oxidized metal and reveal a fresh surface underneath. This technique can help eliminate any remaining rust and prepare the cast iron for re-seasoning. However, it’s essential to approach this method with caution. Not all acids are suitable for cast iron care, and improper use can lead to further damage.
    The myths surrounding cast iron maintenance often contribute to confusion about how best to care for these beloved cooking tools. For instance, some believe that sanding is necessary for restoration, while others think that any acid will do the trick. In reality, understanding the properties of your cast iron and employing proper techniques-like using vinegar or citric acid in moderation-can help salvage your cookware without compromising its integrity.
    If you choose to explore acid etching as a remedy for your sanded cast iron, be prepared for mixed results. While it may restore some functionality by removing rust and preparing the surface for seasoning again, it’s crucial to follow up with proper re-seasoning techniques to ensure optimal cooking performance moving forward. Ultimately, patience and knowledge are key when dealing with cast iron care-myths aside!

    I had the same problem with my sanded lodge cast iron. I fixed the issue by putting 50/50 vinegar and water solution in it and then allowing it to go to rust. Cleaned it and seasoned it after that with no problems. It's now my best pad

      One of the reasons old pans are so great is that they have been allowed to get rusty/pitted at some point in the last 50+ years

    would roughing up the surface with some 60/80 grit paper do the same thing as the vinegar/water?

    Just keep cooking as long as foods not sticking you should be fine. I do agree about not sanding it's much easier to use the textured surface and with enough cooking it smooths out in time.

      Yeah man, I don't understand this "NEED" to be smooth. People seem to think smooth = non-stick.
      Try cooking an egg on an unseasoned cast iron. It will become one with the pan.

    I agree, just cook with the pan and they smooth out over time. I watched too many youtube videos and sanded one of my pans, I tried everything including the vinegar treatment to no avail.

      Many suggestions for sandblasting. My guess is that it won't work any better than 40 grit paper.

    Can you just rough it up with 40 grit sandpaper and then re-season it?

    Agree 100%, leave them alone and just cook in them. The seasoning practically takes care of itself.

      You won't have a smooth pan for 20 years.

      Actually, the rough surface pan I used is now perfectly smooth because I've just been using it. Took about 3 months to establish a smooth surface.
      You need to use your pan more.

    What happened is you took the bluing off the cast iron with the sander! The black color (actually blue) of the pan in the old days was achieved by the reaction of ammonia when it is used on the metal. When used on cast iron or carbon steel ammonia creates a protective layer of blue/black oxidation which is characteristic of cast iron and carbon steel (wok). This was one of the first methods used to protect the metal pans and guns from rusting instantly when coming into contact with moisture. I'm not sure if it will salvage your pan, but you should try burning off your seasoning and using ammonia to restore the bluing to your pan as the oxidation it creates is actually part of what holds the "seasoning'

    Playing to the useless trolls won't help the viewers that come to learn or watch with new videos. It just feeds the objective without moving on. Without being hated myself, why concentrate so heavily on it. And to be frank, I thought the music on prior video I watched overcame the learning lessons we came to learn off of. Just trying to be helpful, even if honest points of viewers might offend the maker unintentionally. I do like this channel and his cutie of his pet too. Wish ppl cld just move on to new n better pastures without negativity that is not purposeful. Hope someone out of the box (so to speak) helped resolve with any reflectiveness. Either way, I do wonder about sandblasting to fix any issues of the pan. But then again, to go buy a blaster surely wld be more pricey than obtaining a new Lodge. Well, there's my one cents worth of thoughts today for what its worth. N as always, have fun n stay blessed everybody

      bro, the music and ever-so-brief comment about it in the video was meant purely to be humorous, as we have all seen in many comments on many channels and videos, the "music nazis".
      Honestly, I like to make my videos entertaining with my humor. If you like it, great, if not, oh well. Ya know? I could just stand there and be boring as hell. I choose not to. I may not be Jim Carey, but I do what makes me laugh. Hopefully it give you a chuckle too.
      All the content for you to learn from is there. I've just injected some little things I find humorous in between cuts. No big deal.
      It's like a buffet. Take what you like, ignore what you don't.
      I will never ever ever make a video that pleases every single viewer. Some people like what I put in, some people don't.
      Thanks

      If I may add one more thing, this channel is for me to learn how to use my expensive camera, how to use editing software, and for me to develop confidence in front of the camera, and basically learn learn learn by making mistakes.
      I'm starting with virtually from the ground floor with creating content.
      I do have bigger plans and channel ideas. But I'm making all my mistakes and advances with this channel.
      I don't know any more about cast iron than any other soul who's been using it a while. I think I make that obvious 😆.

    I sanded my 12" Lodge. It's my wife's favorite pan, which is a little odd since I fixed it before we were married. My advice? Sand it now, sand it smooth, sand it early, sand it late: But, sand it. I would no more have an unsanded Lodge than a Chinese made aluminum pan.
    Assuming I ever need another cast iron pan I'll either get one that's already smooth as a mirror or get a Lodge and shine that thing like a gem!

      Sorry bud. Im sure he did mean to trigger the annoyed abused child in you. At some point, you need to deal with whatever trauma in your life causes you to get that emotionally disregulated over a......PAN.
      You became a total asshole to a stranger because you disagreed with him over....A F#$KING PAN.
      Go. Make love to your sanded pan.
      Go. Get some stress relief.
      OR JUST GO.

      Engaging with his video helps his videos make more money. I am sure he does appreciate it!
      Congrats for being so brave to choose a childishly asshole way to comment in your anonymity.
      People like you who find it so easy to be mean and nasty assholes to strangers anonymously and delight in it are....
      Well....mean, nasty assholes.
      Congrats.
      Grow up. It's easy being an asshole playground bully. It's hard to be a regulated ADULT.
      You took the easy path as you've done all your affected, disregulated life. You folks are easy to spot.
      Try something hard for once in your disregulated life.
      Oh, your poor wife. How long has she been dealing with your issues?
      Bet she's battered with bruises. 😢

    We have an eight-inch made in Korea cast iron #4, a smooth inside bottom. It is the only cast iron we have seen made with a smooth inside, our other cast iron pans are rough inside. Truly, when cooking we do not notice any difference, they perform the same. As your video demonstrates, the seasoning on our eight inch is not holding up for long. Our solution, wipe it with lard, it is ready and non-stick for the next use.
    Suggestion, eliminate the background music over your voice, it quickly becomes annoying. Many folks have hearing difficulties. Because of their hearing issues they must concentrate on your voice and concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating.

    You can sand smooth with power tools. The old time manufacturers machined them smooth. You just have to wipe the pan dry of oil before you heat it up when you season. If you season thicker you will get flaking problems.

    • @lodgecastirondude
      @lodgecastirondude  Місяць тому

      Doesn't work. Thus the reason for the video. My 12 inch Lodge is perfectly smooth now, and never did a thing to it. Use it as-is, and the valleys will fill in with polymerized oils and become smooth naturally over a few months. And it will never flake off because of the firm grip it has on the rough surface.

  • @michaeljustice124
    @michaeljustice124 2 роки тому

    Hit it with 80 grit sandpaper and you’ll be fine. That seems to be just enough roughness for the seasoning to bite into.

    • @lodgecastirondude
      @lodgecastirondude  2 роки тому +2

      Did it with 80 grit and then when that didn't work, 40 grit. Still seasoning lifts off with the first use.
      I'm going to try not using power tools on cast iron. That always works best!
