Tom, you made my day. First thing this morning, when I turned on the computer, there you were with the Bonnie Blue Flag! Trouble is I can't stop singing it now. Hey wait...that's not trouble...that's a good thing. I wish all of our nation could stop arguing and start singing...together! Thank you Kind Sir!

Fantastic version, sir. You are a truly talented musician. Thank you for keeping this great piece of Americana alive. I respect your music and love the fact that you are keeping the music of our past alive. This music is a great part of our American heritage. Harry McCarthy was of Ulster Scots-Irish stock known as the "Arkansas Comedian" and was the number one entertainer of the Confederacy. He could effect Yankee, Irish, Scottish, Cockney English, and other dialects and accents. His performance of the Bonnie Blue Flag in New Orleans almost erupted in a riot for the enthusiasm of the Texas CSA troops in the audience.

"Bonnie Blue Flag" is mentioned in Margaret Mitchell's novel, "Gone With The Wind," and was the inspiration for the name of Rhett and Scarlett's daughter. Scarlett had come up with Eugenia Victoria Butler. Melanie and Rhett were discussing the color of her eyes, which Rhett said were blue, and would remain blue. Melanie exclaimed "as blue as the Bonnie Blue Flag," thus she was known thereafter as Bonnie.

I've never read "Gone With The Wind," but I have seen the movie with Clark Gable (Rhett Butler) and Vivian Leigh (Scarlett O'Hara).
I personally thought it was disgraceful and unnecessary to show their daughter, Bonnie Blue Butler, being killed in a riding accident (the same fate as Scarlett's father), instead of allowing her to grow up, especially since it's partly because of the little girl's death that Rhett decides to leave Scarlett, as we all remember from the finale, where Scarlett asks Rhett "If you leave, where shall I go, what shall I do?" "Frankly, my dear," Rhett replies, speaking one of the most famous movie lines, "I don't give a damn." (I heard that the film was banned in some states because of the use of that last word, and that the producers were actually forced to pay a fine for it as well). That's not the last line, however, because Scarlett vows that she'll get Rhett back somehow. "After all," she says, "tomorrow is another day."
My mom once told me that when she and my future father were dating, they went to a theater to see a revival of "Gone With The Wind," and dad was so upset by the scene where Bonnie Blue Butler dies after falling from her horse, that he started to weep. (This may not seem like such a big deal, but one should remember that this was a time when it was considered "sissy" or "unmanly" for a male to cry) After the film was over and the two of them were going home, dad actually asked mom if she now thought less of him after seeing him cry. She said she didn't.

Are you aware of the fact that the "heritage of the old South" that you want to "keep alive" included slavery, Jim Crow segregation, racial and social injustice, lynchings, the Ku Klux Klan, etc? If not, then maybe you should do a little more research on the subject, instead of basing your alleged "knowledge" of Southern history completely on outdated myths about "the sunny, sunny South," and the so-called "Lost Cause," and/or on songs like "Dixie," "Carolina In The Morning," "Swannie River," or "The Bonnie Blue Flag." (As catchy as they sound)
These myths and songs depict and perpetuate an idealized and nostalgic version of the "old South" that, contrary to popular belief, has little or no basis in reality. In short, it's all LIES!
Furthermore, these Southern legends have given birth to the rise of what has been called the "Neo-Confederate" movement, which is, in fact, little better than the modern White Nationalist and White Supremacists movements, all of which are based on the same racist ideas as the KKK, the Neo-Nazis, and the Neo-Fascists, who happen to be in sympathy with the anti-vaxxers, the anti-mask fanatics, and the extreme right-wing politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Gregg Abbott, Ron DeSantis, Glen Youngkin, Judge Roy Moore, Sarah Palin, "Moscow Mitch" McConnell, etc, as well as the far-right "talk show hosts" and authors, like Tucker Carlson, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Alex Jones, and the like, all of whom support the increasing authoritarianism in our government which is basically leading the United States of America, which is supposed to be a free country, to FASCISM!
Ironically, these same extremists would have us believe that all this nation's problems are the fault of the liberals, who supposedly want to turn America to Socialism, Communism, Maoism, and so on, which is just as crazy as Hitler blaming all of Germany's troubles on the Jews and Communists, and constantly ranting about the "Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy."
And we all know who's to blame for starting us on this road to oppression by appealing to the worst elements in this country and pandering to their fears and prejudices -- DONALD TRUMP!

Kentucky and Missouri now have joined the sister throng.
Our flashing steel shall pay the price of ransom for the brave.
So plant, my boys, the Bonnie Blue Flag on Zollicoffer's grave.
We cast our eyes far northward, and lo! Missouri comes,
With roar of dread artillery and sound of martial drums.
Through fire and smoke with martyr tread she graves the god of war.
So hoist on high the Bonnie Blue flag that bears a single star!
Then cheer, boys, cheer, for the "Dark and bloody ground"
Awaking from her lethargy has caught th' inspiring sound.
For noble old Kentucky shouts from her vales so green:
"Make room upon the Bonnie Blue Flag--Kentucky makes thirteen!"
Maryland looks southward with supplicating eye,
And listens with breathless haste to catch the battle cry.
When Beauregard shall tread her soil all panoplied in war,
She'll hoist on high the Bonnie Blue flag that bears a single star.
Maryland, we'll think of thee. We'll heed thy suppliant's calls,
As mournfully they float from out McHenry's walls.
One corner shall be kept for thee through all the blaze of war,

'Liberty' sung but 'property' written. A Freudian slip? I prefer the 6/8 time. Great song, all the same.

That photo, if you read the caption, says their division is 1st Louisiana Native Guard. A quick search, and you can find out that their origin story isn't as straight forward as 'black confederates.' Furthermore, that's a cropped version of the original photo. By the time of this photo, 1 Louisiana NG was an African American regiment for the Union. They are wearing light blue uniforms and there's a Union officer to the left. It's a picture that gets spread around the internet to reimagine the Confederacy. There were African Americans fighting for the south, including slaves pressed into service, but by and large, the CSA wasn't eager to arm non-whites for obvious reasons.

They're rarely mentioned, but it's just common sense. You see the Yankees invading your home and burning everything to the ground, it don't matter who you are, you're going to take exception to that and be skeptical about their intentions. The Black Confederates were garnered with respect for defending our homeland, but unfortunately it's too politically controversial to talk about such historical peculiarities.

The original words were - ”We are a band of brothers & native to the soil fighting for the property we gained by honest toil & when our rights were threatened, the cry rang out for The Bonnie Blue Flag, that bears the single star...”. The property referred to were human beings. We should not forget that.

Both the "property gained by honest toil" and "liberty with treasure Blood and toil" lyrics date back to 1861. It really isnt known which one came first.

A little disingenuous to use a photo of Black troops in the background of a Confederate song.
