If you think about it, The lyrics of this song might have actually inspired Scott to make the music box in FNAF 2. The song says that the clock stopped and never went again when the old man died. In FNAF 2, If the music box stops, the player dies. In addition, the line, "90 years without slumbering" references the fact that FNAF involves working a night shift. If you think about it, all the people who worked at the Freddy Fazbear's locations probably got insomnia. They were haunted by the horrors that they got while working, which prevented them from sleeping much.

    • @olivegem6853
      @olivegem6853 Рік тому +18

That’s a cool way to look at it! I kinda feel like the parts where they describe how the clock is a great servant is like describing the puppet. It only wants the music box wound, always has a smile on its face. The idea that it’s a machine linked to a person’s soul is conceptually pretty similar to the franchise as a whole.

My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf
So it stood ninety years on the floor
It was taller by half than the old man himself
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born
And was always his treasure and pride
But it stopped, short never to go again
    When the old man died
    Ninety years without slumbering
    His life seconds numbering
It stopped, short never to go again
    When the old man died
My grandfather said that of those he could hire
Not a servant so faithful he found
For it wasted no time and had but one desire
At the close of each week to be wound
And it kept in its place, not a frown upon its face
And its hands never hung by its side
But it stopped short, never to go again
    When the old man died
It rang and alarmed in the dead of the night
An alarm that for years had been dumb
And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flight
That his hour for departure had come
Still the clock kept the time with a soft and muffled chime
As we silently stood by his side
But it stopped short, never to go again
    When the old man died

She had a beautiful voice. She was a music person, piano and organ. She has been gone since 2020 due to Covid. Years later, after my sister had grown, she gave the clock to my brother for his sons. So when I saw one at a thrift store I knew I had to have it. Now hearing all the words, it brings my mother back to life, even for a few minutes.

    GRAND FATHER'S CLOCK
    music & lyrics by
    Henry C work (1876)
    arranged & recorded by
    Tom Rouch
My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf,
    So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born,
    And was always his treasure and pride;
But it stopped short - never to go again -
    When the old man died.
    Ninety years without slumbering
    (tick, tock, tick, tock),
    His life's seconds numbering,
    (tick, tock, tick, tock),
It stopped short never to go again when the old man died
In watching its pendulum swing to and fro,
Many hours he spent as a boy.
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty-four when he entered at the door,
    With a blooming and beautiful bride;
But it stopped short - never to go again -
    When the old man died.
    Ninety years without slumbering
    (tick, tock, tick, tock),

Looked this song up and found this video after reading the comments on another video showing off a Fisher Price Grandfather Clock; and looked that up because the tune had come into my head unbidden and I finally needed to look it up.
Now I can actually match up the lyrics with the clock's melody in my brain. Also, I was able to determine that this was the same tune, without the pauses, that was used for the novelty song, "My Father's Top Drawer."
Guess it is time to go look that one up and grab to put on my phone.

I read that it was a song on one of his kids' toys, but my thinking was that elegantly wove together the thing of time and someones 'time' being up--namely when the music stops and the puppet comes out to say hi xD
I used to have a tinfoil hat theory that this song was referenced by a grandfather clock being put into the house from Fnaf4. You never know, I spose :) I liked how that series spawned so much community spirit about the plot and so forth.

My nan had a mantlepiece clock that was given to her as a little girl. It was only about eighteen inches tall and kept perfect time, never gained, never lost even after it's casing got damaged when one of my cousins knocked it off the mantle.
My nan died aged 98 and bequeathed her clock to my mother in her will. The clock only worked for about two weeks before it started losing time. The chime no longer operated properly and even when fully wound, would only work sporadically.
Mum took it to a repair shop and spent five hundred pounds on having the thing stripped, cleaned and repaired but even after all this care and attention the damn thing never worked quite right.
In the end mum sold it and managed to make back her money but how that clock behaved after my nan's death, the fact that it somehow seemed to be mourning her passing, still haunts me to this day.

My Grandmother had a song book...treasured old favorites...Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party was our second favorite, but this was the best!
I used to sing it with her while she played guitar or piano, and she couldn't get to the end of the chorus without crying.
We would both start laughing, but she would laugh and cry her way through the rest.
Now she has passed on a year and a half ago, at almost 90 years old, and I am the one crying - and laughing, in sweet memory of her...ALL the way through the song!

My grandfather's clock was too tall for our house, so we put it on Craig's List one day.
We were fair with the price and to all we were nice, hoping someone would take it away.
They came late, not at all, and they didn't think to call, we were puzzled and vex-ed and sore.
So we pulled - the - ad and quickly threw granddad's clock - out - doors.
In the rain and the thunder it "warped warped, warped warped".
It lost all its numbers and "warped warped, warped "
It with rot - stopped - never to go again when it went - out - doors!
