  • This video goes through how I stay clean and organised whilst making soap. With lots of hints and tips that may help you out of you find you get in a mess when soaping.
Soaping should be a pleasurable experience, letting yourself get into a mess just creates stress and stops your pours from being enjoyable. So try to just take a few minutes to keep on top of the chaos rather than just diving into the pour when you're surrounded by clutter.

The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

Hi Everyone, something different today. I've been asked for a video on this by quite a few people, so I thought as we had an extra soapmaking video during the week that today would be a good opportunity. I hope you find some tips that may be helpful.

Hi Lisa ..... I really enjoyed this video, so different and interesting. I am very much the same, everything to hand and ready to go. Made me feel better because I am quite pedantic about tidiness while working lol, I am sure many are the same. Really good of you to open your home up to show us your working routine.....and the soap was gorgeous too. Take care and thanks again 💐

I began soapmaking as a perfect messer, but since I saw your first video about cleaning..I organised myself. Actually, I have the stuff, just like you in containers, all together and I clean up and range everything before actually pouring the soap... best way not to forget .. like the fragance...
I just add a newspaper on my working zone..
Thank you for the great video again.. you are the person who taught me the most about soapmaking... and I share your videos all the time on fb soapmaking pages.
Maybe you could explain how and why fragrances or even just the lye can change sometimes the colours of micas.. ( my beautiful landscape soap has a sandcoloured sky... wIth a very very intense blue mica... )
Thank you for being so generous with your skills

I can't express to you how happy I am that you posted this video when you did! I'm attempting to make soap (and candles!) for the first time this weekend and I've definitely been overthinking things and causing unnecessary anxiety. I think that master batching is what make it look easier to me : when you didn’t end up with 7 jugs to wash up. I always imagined huge massive containers for mater batching, when you pulled them from your closet I was really surprised.

    • @IDreamInSoap
      @IDreamInSoap  3 роки тому +3

I do think masterbatching can help, but there's no reason to get in a mess when you don't, just stop after melting your oils and clear up before you move on. I do have a bigger tub of masterbatch oils, that's my 'working' tub that I pour some into. I make up 10kg of oils at a time. I do have a video about 'Small scale masterbatching' here ua-cam.com/video/vCTNIt56Hbw/v-deo.html

I have been a soap maker for 20 years now and I am finally lucky enough to have a small soap cottage. It is only a 10 by 10 shed, but I am excited to finally have a space all to myself and to get it all fixed up. It is a work in progress and has no sink or running water and never will. So I kind of work in the reverse of you. LOL!!! I have all my soaping things right where I need them, but have to put all my dirty dishes into a basket and take them into the house to wash them and then tote them back out to put them away. I always take a small bucket of hot, soapy water out with me and clean all my counters and stove top etc. before I start then go over it with alcohol. Being that I have no running water, I cover my counter with a large towel to work on and that way the mess gets on the towel and not the counter, which saves me some cleaning up. I can then just wash the towel with the cloths I use to clean my soap equipment with. I have fibromyalgia and all of this makes soaping so much easier for me. Cleaning all your soap equipment off before washing it makes washing a breeze and it is far easier for me to run a load of laundry in the washer that to stand a scrub soap pots. I hope to soon get up the nerve to make a video of tips for soaping with a chronic illness or physical limitations.

Ooh a separate work space does sound lovely. I have thought about it, and hopefully one day. Ooh it does sound hard work without the water, but you do sound well organised. Do try making a video that sounds really useful, as well as the hints and tips, just inspiring people to have a go.

I just wanted to tell you how much your cleanup ideas have helped me. Cleaning with microfiber before washing has not only been safer for our septic, but it has been a tremendous time saver. I don't mind washing dishes, but have terrific back pain and yet I love to make soap. These methods make it so I don't have to stand over a sink as long. I sure hope I haven't sent too much grease down the drain already! I never thought about the soap saponifying on the microfiber! Thank you again!!! I really found this helpful. Seeing you also work in your kitchen, store items around your home which is what I have to do though less counter space. I will now use microfibres to wipe down etc I too hate using paper towels and the current chux cloths as also more disposable trying to stay organised during the making is where I can do better. So thank you I’ve got a better idea on how to do that now.

Love your kitchen and process. I still working on being organized. Lol I prepped similar to you last time I made bath bombs. I still had a cyclone work area at the end. So I still ended up with a tiny little work space surrounded by disorganized stations. But I will get there. You are such an inspiration. Jeannie R PS. My first CP soap I made a version of your ombré salt soap. I am on my 8th week of cure but I tested it last week it is amazing. My 2nd soap that day was a recipe I created by watching your videos and using soap calc to make sure the recipe was safe and had the properties I wanted. I love it. I think I was lucky and it will be my main recipe. My only change will be increased super fat. It is so creamy and lather is amazing. Thank you so much for you amazing instructional videos.

Hi Lisa, thanks for the video , lots of very useful tips there. I have a very small kitchen so it easily looks messy and disorganised if I’m not careful, which in turn gives me a muddled head ha ha ha. I was soaping yesterday and it took me ages to find where I’d put a particular ingredient. I’ll definitely put into practice how to organise my equipment etc. I love the Perspex mould by the way.

I started with baskets...ingredients in one, equipment in the other. Then I bought a rolling kitchen island, then a shelf to go above the cart for my colorants, the a second shelf for my scents. Then a multi-shelf unit in the garage to store bulk ingredients and cure soaps. And a pantry rack on the garage wall to store packaged soaps. But I’m good for right now, especially since I started master batching after watching your. video several times. Admittedly on a slightly larger scale...640 oz of oils/butters and 2 gals of ready-to-use Lye Solution. I also have a spread sheet on my wall that lists all my molds and how many ounces of oils/butter and Lye Solution I need to fill them.
When I want to make soap, I still print out a recipe and I’ll write the name, color(s), scent, technique. I note the mold I’m using and the amounts I need from my spreadsheet and I pin it to the wall. I then wipe down my surfaces, pull out my containers, additives and scale. Then I put on my apron and gloves, measure out my oils/butter and pop them in the microwave. Then colors and scents. And then I put on my safety glasses and pour my lye. Then I make my soap, pop it in the mold, and put it in the garage. Then I wipe up my equipment with my lovely microfiber towels and start on the next batch. With the towels, I can use the same containers and spatulas over and over again. When I’m done making soap and everything is wiped up, I fill the sink with water, wash my equipment, wash my towels and then put everything away. Final wipe of my island and counters and I throw my towels in with a load of laundry.

OMGoodness, Lisa! I don't have a soap room, either. I had a sort half wall between my kitchen and livingroom and hubby and I located some base cabinets that match ours. Same countertop and we installed ourselves. This is my work area. About 6 feet long. I am a Virgo and slightly OCD in cleanliness and organization. I, like you, put boiling water in used container, after wipedown. I wipe down everything before cleaning them. Cringe at the thought of those oils or any batter going down the plumbing. My son went to college for water treatment and had told me about the gray water treatment phase and the horrors that part involved. Awful, how much grease is put down plumbing and the clogging along the way, it causes. Anyway, sorry about rambling on. I got my package. Thank You! Cheers and Blessings 💕

Well okay...this clumsy soaper is going to get super-soaper organized just like you. I like the basket method and mixing oils and kinds of butter ahead of time. How much of a batch do you make of oils and lye solution? I make 2-3000 gr at a time so maybe it's not worth it for me. I often measure out my oils and kinds of butter and lye solution the night before I put it all together to saponify. Working two time periods helps my back from hurting and getting too tired and both are at room temperature to get started. Wiping containers down seems good, but I'm always racing against time before the soap seizes and getting in all the special ingredients before I pour. Thank you for all your ideas.

I'm not quite this organized, partly because I don't have a consistent work space - dining table, kitchen counter, hubby's wood working bench...I do keep a tote next to me for all of my dirty stuff to go into, I have rags and paper towels nearby, and I have everything measured out in jars and containers laid out in the order I need to use it asking with my plans with all sorts of notes. This is mostly because I'm such a scatter brained person (or maybe due to being pregnant while I was learning, she's 3 weeks old now but I still have pregnancy brain lol). I've found my designs go a lot better and clean up isn't terrible if I do this. I have left things in the tote and scraped the bowls even more and add them to my shreds.
Hopefully we can move into a bigger place soon so I can declare a specific space to be mine for supplies and the making of... And a proper cutter as I'm just horrible at cutting 😂

HI, Luckily for us in the UK we do not have to have a separate room like you do. We are allowed to soap in our kitchens as long as our soaping activity is carried out at a different time to anything else, so no quickly cooking dinner whilst your waiting for layers to set up.. We still have to have GMP files, batch logs, PIFs for everything and of course cosmetic assessments and that always seems a lot but I do feel lucky we have a little more flexibility that you guys do.
