I recently discovered your channel via Jimmy DiResta's work and would like to say: I like the fact that you add the "what you'd do differently" on your videos. That aspect really helps us amateurs not only with the guesswork but also help gather confidence in doing something that is outside the comfort zone. I just started listening to the podcast you, David, and jimmy put out and love it. You guys inspire!

I really like how you don't stress about whatever you did wrong -- just make notes on what you would do differently in the future. :) great job, bob!

Never thought a light fixture could be that straight forward. Thanks for sharing!

Nice lighting idea! Turned out great.
To hide the seam in the shade, you could feather the protruding edges with a sander.

Great Video! Have you thought about covering the bottom with some kind of white shine-through material? I think that would make the light much more ambient and pleasant to the eye :)

Been looking for months for this sort of teaching tool. It is just awesome. I can now make two clamming wire baskets into ceiling lights as I always dreamed of/pictured in my mind. You made the entire process doable. I understand by seeing things being done. This works for me! THANK YOU!

The overlap on one side makes it want to be an oval. Even if you put it around a cylinder during glue up, it will flex back into an oval when you take it out. The best way to keep it round is to put a permanent circular frame inside of it. A second perpendicular cross piece would also help. Great video!

cool project! You may also add a piece of veneer at the bottom of the lamp that is a bit smaller than the radius of the lamp. So it would dim the light a bit.

You could probably slap together a box made to the diameter of the circle you are going for with the shade. Might not be as perfectly round as wrapping it around a cylinder but would give you a lot more options in terms of the size.

Very nice! I would use a large/wide light diffusing bulb as well. This gives you light diffusion, without needing a diffuser (beacause a diffuser would make it harder to change the bulb.

Spend hours and hours and hours in decoration shops looking for the right light fixture, VS make your own. The hand-made one definitely wins !
And if you are not happy with the result, it's up to you to re-do it better :)

It finished downloading a little bit ago.
The folks who installed lights into my house before I bought it didn't measure correctly, so I have a cabinet door that hits a light fixture. And another one will hit the ceiling fan if it is turned on.

I would also have added a frosted glass disc or fiberglass disc at the base of the shade to diffuse the light. Nothing worse than light bulb glare in the eyes. Right? :) I found a glass company online that made my glass piece for my vintage barrel glass shade (missing the glass cover) to spec - exactly - and they offered a lot of diff kinds of glass.
