What if Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Had Smoother Stop-Motion?

- What if the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 1964 Christmas TV special had smoother stop-motion animation? I used an AI program to interpolate the scene to a higher frame rate and added motion blur as well.
What do you think of the results?
NOTE: Please watch at 720p or above to get 60 fps and the full effect.
Let me know if you think if the smooth stop-motion looks better in the comments down below!
✨ Programs used:
-I used Video Enhance AI Chronos model to interpolate the framerate from 24 fps to 120 fps (free trial, then paid): topazlabs.com/video-enhance-a...

i love the jerky 60s-70s rankin bass animation, it just has a charm to it that modern stop motion films don't have
It adds a sense of Innanmance to everything, almost as if they are dolls being played with by a child re-enacting the story.
I also like how they the jerky animation can help frightening scenes like Little Drummer Boy's rage and The Abominable Snow Monster become more eerie and ominous. Smoother animation would have greatly decreased this effect.
Oddly enough, my memory has the same tech - young me remembers the stop-motion being much smoother than it actually was. Congrats, you’ve created nostalgia! 😄👍🏻
Hahaha
I was thinking the same thing about 2 years ago. Then I watched it and couldn't believe
Probably because it was interpolated to 60i on tv
I think the original frame rate along with motion blur would probably look best.
My old TV used to interpolate frames like this. It made stop motion films like this a treat.
How did his dad have the fake nose held with his hoof? The things that keep me up at night...
Thanks for making this. I’m high outta my MIND right now and I was wondering what Rudolph looked like with 60 fps AI applied. You’ve answered my question, thank you
You made my favorite Christmas movie even better...
It would be interesting to see some of the older stop motion films (like the *Sinbad* flicks) get this treatment.
Always love it when these pop up in my feed! 🙋🏼♂️
YOU SHOULD REALLY DO MAD MONSTER PARTY FOR HALLOWEEN , it’s by the same people as Rudolph
Biggest takeaway with this video is how mean everyone was in this special-even Santa
If the framerate matched or was closer then it would look good. The original still has that magic that is lost in the smoothing.
I had to watch this video again now that its christmas time. Love your work
That is creepy. The original stop motion is so obviously shot frame by frame, that it keeps me aware that these dolls are not actually moving. The enhanced version, however creates a eerie sensation that these objects which should be inanimate, are actually sentient, & most likely possessed by demons.
i agree. The interpolation via AI (or whatever) makes it fall into the 'uncanny' valley. It's weird. I understand the definitions and think the are arbitrary, but this motion blend, possibly because I have seen the stop motion original, is a hard 'NOPE' for me.
Thats how i felt about thunderbirds 😬
And why exactly is that an issue? They seem pretty friendly to me. lol
To be fair, Coraline and any Robot Chicken episode also look like they're sentient puppets that move freely
I like the broken movements better. It's uncanny seeing figures that are obviously fake move so fluid.
This is really nice!
I like this new technology! It provides a nice polish pass!!
Perfect! Just the inspiration I need to make my own Rankin-Bass type of Christmas movie. Got an idea on the mind that combines live actors with the stop motion puppets on this high-stakes adventure to save Santa. Filmed a bit like Elf, but with more of this animagic and smoother.
Nice Video
Hi Andreas, thanks a lot!
Does anyone know this song?
That is amazing!
The smoother animation may look nice, but it doesn’t feel the same…
Say what you want, I think it would be cool to watch the interpolated version. I guess I'm immune to uncanny valley, because no matter how photorealistic, I'm ALWAYS aware of exactly how Unreal it really is. I never get so immersed that I forget what reality is, or where I am.
With all the drama around Snow White. Could you do 60fps to a snow white?
Shut up and take my money to make a whole movie with smoother stop motion! :D
This…is perfection
I'm confused what was changed?
If you are serious they added more frames into the move using ai so the animation is far smoother. Frankly I think it looks like sht but it's impressive.
Hi
original looks better
Motion blur sucks in my mind, I always turn it off were can via media stuff
It removes the charm. I mean it's neat bit I don't like it. They look more creepy .
No, just no
I hate how everyone is spoiled with cgi and wanting things to be perfect. Can’t we just appreciate if for what it is? I have to say the original looks better the new shit looks sped up.
I’m a person who’s done stop motion as a preteen(wasn’t very good😅) and I have to agree with you. I think the original has that sense of human error which is very overlooked, being able to see error isn’t always bad in animation. Although I do have to give props that it does look smoother on the edited version but that’s not always a good thing.
The original animation had this jerky Innanmance to it, almost as if the characters were just dolls being played with by a child re-enacting the story in his head. The interpolation makes it loses this feeling and makes it look more like lazy CGI, which is really detrimental in my opinion.
The jerky animation can help frightening scenes like Little Drummer Boy's rage and The Abominable Snow Monster become more eerie and ominous which enveloped children to a great effect when they watched it. Smoother animation would have greatly decreased this effect and honestly would have made it look goofy rather than scary.
this clearly was just a fun experiment. It's not like it's replacing the movie. It's just an interesting video.
The smoother stop motion looks unnatural 😑
