The girlfriend needs to be looked into, I would NEVER leave my boyfriend to fend for himself while he's drunk and alone, that is extremely sketchy.

my theory is that the police officer was in love with Chris's girlfriend and was jealous so he killed him so that they could be together. That would explain why the police officers weren't doing a good job because they knew that he killed Chris and wanted to look out for their fellow police officer. Maybe the police officer put something in the girlfriend's drink so that when Chris got "kicked out" she wouldn't go after him and the police officer would take her home to make sure she didn't go looking for Chris so he could have the opportunity to kill Chris.

You want to know what’s even sketchier? It was supposedly in his GF’s purse. Although they did say he walked to a different pub afterwards? Maybe trying to keep warm or find a ride?
It’s just super shady that the guy she introduced him too is the one that kicked him out and then she stayed with that guy? And not only that she had his stuff and left him out there knowing he had no ride? Super shady

My theory is that Chris found out that his girlfriend was cheating on him with the police officer. This explains why he just walked out and his girlfriend didn’t follow him and why no one saw him getting kicked out. Chris might’ve said something about telling the officer’s wife and that prompted the officer to kill him to take care of that. That also explains why the police force did such a bad job investigating this case, maybe they were all looking out for their fellow officer. Them saying that they didn’t want to “ruin a family” was definitely sketch.

I think that this theory has a good deal of merit but the way Chris was drugged, held captive and then introduced into the river sounds a lot more ritualistic when you see how many other cases match this profile, many of which are on the west coast as well s along the I-94 corridor.

Not in modern day, being a cop is one of the most miserable positions a person can have, having to put your life on the line on a daily basis just to get spit on by the same people that come crying to you whenever they get in a bad situation. Out of all the jobs in the world a police officer is at the absolute end of the line, I'd rather work as a prison guard.

I feel like the police definitely had something to do with it, and the girlfriend to. The phrasing of ‘splitting up a family’ is so suggestive; if he hadn’t done anything and was presumed innocent then there would be no reason to imply they would split up. Maybe the girlfriend and the off duty police officer were having an affair and other men on the force and/or the bouncers knew this. Perhaps quite far fetched but maybe the girlfriend was sick of hiding it or being with Chris and arranged a hitman situation with the policeman, which would explain the corruption of evidence and basic mishandling of the case as a cover up. I feel like it’s hard justify or get away with that sort of police negligence in such obviously sketchy circumstances. It would also explain the kicking out of the club exchange with no one following him and the club then not allowing the bouncers to talk to anyone without legal advisors.

Oh yeah, like, In what universe would "hey babe, that person i gave a lift to? her BF is missing how wild is that, im going to go tell my coworkers -whos job it is to find him- about how drunk he was and maybe help locate him" be followed by "how dare you see someone who later went missing!? we're done!!" you have to do a lot more to 'split up a family', and if they think asking him more in depth questions about that night would do that, they know he did something that would get revealed.

Sounds like his girlfriend was possibly cheating on him and the bouncer/cop guy that threw Chris out of the bar is the killer. Cops stick together regardless, and their refusal to even interview this guy Mike’s family just proves even more that they were covering for him. It’s sad how if you’re a cop and u kill someone, you’ll pretty much probably get away with it. Poor Chris will never get justice😞

If my husband was kicked out of a bar I wouldn't stay there chatting up the guy that got him kicked out and I damn sure wouldn't let him drive me home. I would have left with my husband even when he was just my boyfriend. You don't leave or spouse when they are "supposedly" so drunk that they get kick out of a bar. His friends also suck! Doesn’t matter how much I’ve drunk - me and my friends always have an eye on one another!
Also - so odd about the gf staying and chatting (flirting?) with the off duty cop...who kicked her bf out 😐
Police not following up on anything is sketchy - but having binge watched The Innocent Man on Netflix, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were in cahoots with the Murderers or serial killers or they have something over people on the police force

The bouncer had to have been in on it... whether he was a part of smiley face gang or him and the cop decided on killing him, I found it really odd that chris’ scent was in his car... I don’t know what motive the cop would have besides him disliking Chris or maybe him just being violent.. they should have followed up on this bouncer but searching his house, I feel like they would’ve found a lot more evidence.

The last theory is probably the most believable in my opinion. I think the police officer, the bouncer and some other local psychopaths had a gang of their own maybe it was the evil smiley face gang or not, I think they both had something to do with it. Maybe the police officer was just distracting the girlfriend while the bouncer did the dirty work.

I definitely think the bodyguard had something to do with it and the police officer sounds suspicious too. But, and I know this sounds crazy, but maybe the bodyguard/officer was a member of the smiley face gang? Like, instead of the two theories being separate maybe they're connected?? There's not a ton to back this up but the m.o of the smiley face gang supports that one of them (or a copycat?) killed Chris and the officer/bodyguard are really suspicious to me. This probably doesn't make sense but that's my theory (tl;dr- the officer or bodyguard (or both) are actually members of the smiley face gang (or copycats) and they killed Chris)

SO glad you mentioned the Smiley Face Gang. There have been many more deaths exactly like this in Wisconsin and Minnesota, all during the coldest months of the year: Popular college boys get wrongfully kicked out of bars, left alone, go missing for days/weeks, and turn up in bodies of water. The cops have ruled all of them accidental drownings, but the families and friends say the boys would never wander off into a river/lake, and that these deaths were the result of foul play (read: murder). Bouncers/cops are in cahoots over killing college boys, and for what?

    My theory:
His girlfriend was in on the murder. I think that she was having an affair with the police officer. What are the odds that they ended up at the same bar as the police officer whose shirt she was wearing by chance. I think that she told the police officer which bar they were going to, and the time. The officer wanted the boyfriend gone so that he could have the girlfriend for himself. He asked the bouncer to help him execute the plan.

There are literally dozens of cases just like this all across America! A college age guy goes missing after a night of drinking under suspicious circumstances and is then found in a body of water days to weeks later. Most of the cases they've ruled accidental drowning as the cause of death, even though there's been no water in their lungs.
