    That is an aluminum cone (aluminium for the entire world outside the U.S.) and dust cap, it makes for a riggid lightweigth cone and blocks the interior resonance frequencies of the box which paper cones are more sensible to, its really beatifull but be sure you dont hit it with anithing or you can permanently deform it, also it catches finger prints like a magnet... and yeah that is a beautyfull glue job over there something really rare on car audio gear

    I wouldn't keep that sub flat on the table when playing music. You're covering the pole vent that keeps it cool. You can burn it up pretty easily when you cover that vent. Good video, Good stuff man.

    The hole on the back is mainly for letting the air between the magnet and the center enclosure go out easily... Which let the speaker be more sensitive (cooling is nice side effect)

      Yup and also the smaller holes around it are straight beneath the coil. Their primary function is coil cooling

    One thing about home theater subs vs car audio is most HT subs have softer suspension giving them a low FS having good response into subsonic frequencys for movie rumbles in movies usally sacrificing some power handling vs car subs usally don't hit good that low dropping off below 30ish because subsonic isn't as much of priority compared to SPL so power handling is a fairly high priority. Obviously they both can be used for either but a car sub in a house would be geared more for HIFI vs HT. I'd like to hear couple of the new Dayton Kracken 24" in a car but you would need at least 2 so you can wire to 2 ohms because to push 1 to its 2k rating who can afford a 2000w at 4 ohm amp that's a big ass amp! But prob 2 on the skateboard sized Audiopipe 3k at 2 ohm would push them pretty good I'd think tho.

      I'm only going to use Dayton subs for car most likely. My 10" Ultimax in their sealed kit they sell at parts express and digs very deep in my car. Usable to 26Hz with clean audible output into the teens.
      The 10"is moving to a new box soon that's tuned to 19Hz with 3 Dayton 10" passive radiators. Going to be awesome! I don't need insane output like other car subs, but I'm pretty sure this new box will be insane to me.

    Those holes in the system aren’t for a cooling, but to provide a proper Qms. A coil, a cone cap and a magnet create a sealed chamber. Without the hole it works like a power spring.

    I have the HF version of this sub. Today am starting a sealed enclosure for my hifi setup (currently have a 10inch KEF driver in a sealed box, which goes nice and low just doesn't keep up with my big full range speakers). Have 1 inch MDF and double 18mm ply for front baffle. Running off a crown xls1002 in bridge mode should do nicely, have a 1502 if not.. I too have done tons of research over the year and time and again the Dayton audio reference 15 sub has come to the top of the list. My understanding is the HF doesn't have as high SPL as the HO but has better sensitivity so should perform nicely up to sensible listening levels!

      The HF line is better suited for sealed applications whereas the parameters of the HO are more suited for vented boxes. Of course you can build a vented box for the HF speakers but the enclosure will be enormous.
      Thus, HO for vented, HF for sealed application

    Good decision on building your own speakers. Retail products generally are built with cheap drivers, materials and crossover components. The manufacturer has to make money and by the time the distributor and the retailer make money, the mark-up turns a mediocre, cheap speaker into a $500 speaker. I can build a home speaker for around $250 that blows away a $1,000 retail speaker. There's plenty of proven designs and also kits available online for DIY speaker builds.

    I been in the market for the Dayton audio reference 12 for a long time but for my car. Do you think with 500rms and a 1.5 net tuned to 36hz it will play nicely? I'm looking for best sound quality and not taking up space.

    • @JoshM7
      @JoshM7 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure what kind of music you listen to, but I have a 10" Ultimax in my car in a sealed 1.5 cube box that plays beautifully. Very clean usable output for me down to 26Hz, that's with the windows down at highway speeds as well.
      Assuming you're talking about the Dayton Audio RSS315HO-4 you're looking at very good output from 32Hz and up. Should get very loud as well. If you put 700w into it you'll run out of Xmax by 29Hz but 30 and up can take rated just fine.

      @@JoshM7 I listen to various music like rap, electro, Spanish, rock. What would you recommend for a single 12 on 500rms and a small ported box 1.5 tuned to 36hz. The Ultimax or the reference and this is in a vehicle.

    • @JoshM7
      @JoshM7 3 роки тому

      @@paquesepas6696 I wouldn't use the Ultimax 12 unless you have more space for a bigger box. It likes a lot of space and doesn't do well when restricted in a small box.
      The Reference RSS315HO-4 needs a fairly big/long port to prevent chuffing in 1.5 cubes. But it has a lot of output. You'll need something like a 14" wide by 2" tall slot port that's about 34" long for 36Hz without much chuffing at 500w. This gets about as loud as my 18 on 500w at 35Hz. Not bad.

    honestly... in my opinion this is a not a good review. Why? Because it contains zero valuable information for serious hifi builders who consider buying one (or some) of these.
    "Look how big it is... look how it moves!" Is this really all you care about when evaluating speakers? Well ok...your choice.
    But what about the really important information? You mentioned Watts... Watts only tells you when the voice coil will catch fire, nothing more. What about frequency response and efficiency compared to other 15" woofers? What about crossover configuration or amplifier recommendations?
    You are talking about nice smooth bass... while operating the sub on a desk or holding it in your hand?!? come on... What cabinet recommendations? How does it perform in closed vs. vented cabinets?
    My appologies, if your intention is to show how shiny it looks and how nice it moves then please forgive me, fine video then. But I do not consider this a serious review.
