- The Sega Dreamcast console is one of my favorite retro gaming pieces of hardware around filled with some of my favorite retro games of all time...so of course if I love the Sega Dreamcast you know I have at least one (ok more than one) Sega NAOMI boards in my collection! Because for as many best Dreamcast games of all time that are on the home console...the arcade counterpart has just as many awesome arcade games to play!
So let's take a look at the Sega NAOMI arcade board, talk about whether if you should consider the Sega NAOMI worth it, the best Sega NAOMI games, and how to emulate Sega NAOMI! Now if we could just get a MiSTer FPGA core!

Yes I would love to see a Naomi 2. I am one of the subs who has been asking for Naomi1/2/GD-Rom for years now :D
It might be almost identical but for brevity sake please cover all of the units. I will often use or need to reference your vids to newcomers who want to step out of virtual emulation and into hardware so the teardowns, explanations (even brief) and HQ video footage are crucial to their understanding. Especially the younger ones who cant quite collection information off static images.
Thank you in advance VGE, keep up the amazing work.
I’ll dig it out one of these days. This got made because the next ten Tuesday’s will be NAOMI videos. So I always start with hardware videos
I've recently dived into building a Naomi 2 netboot setup, there are quite a few gotchas with it. I'm happy to answer any questions for anyone else trying to make a setup.
Yeah it’s a very complicated setup
Capcom vs Snk is one of my favorite games from my teenage years. My local arcade actually had a cab and me and my friends ruled that machine. I have it on DC but would love a Naomi.
It’s an absolute classic and will be showing up on the channel soon
@@VideoGameEsoterica I think I remember hearing the rumor it was going to happen and forgetting then the cab showed up and my mind was blown. KOF98 on DC made me an SNK fan after having been a Street Fighter fan since grade school. I then imported KoF 95,96,97 for Saturn. I gotta say the ratio system kind of sucks, but the gameplay, graphics and having Ryu and Ryo meet in a game was awesome. Shame companies don’t do things like this anymore
Yes we need more crossovers. Some awesome fan service fighters
Capcom vs SNK 2 is my favorite game of all time. I have a Naomi GD-Rom Let's Play on my personal archive channel
ua-cam.com/video/G_tWbsCxXn8/v-deo.html
I’m glad I’m not the only one who prefers it to 2
Dreamcast being based on Naomi is the reason why DC has VGA capabilities. One of the best examples of technical legacy doing something very cool.
Also for those that don't know the big difference in performance between Naomi and DC comes down to RAM speed. Dreamcast used a slower memory clock and as such it meant the SH4 Vector engine ended up bandwidth starved, so it couldn't hit the same polygon through put as Naomi. That said look at games like Crazy Taxi and you would hard pressed to see the difference.
Dreamcast is a master class in hardware efficiency at all levels. Great performance at a very low price and it all started with Naomi.
Sega made great hardware decisions and bad business decisions in this era
Would love to see a video showing everything required to hook up your Naomi
I’ll consider it for summer / fall :)
Love this niche stuff, this channel is criminally underrated. Thanks as always!
Haha I think so too but I’m biased. Damn algorithm. Go make 20K friends sub!
It can output in both 31khz or 15khz. You just have to flip the switch on the filter board.
Now it makes sense why an FPGA implementation would require so many logic elements.
Yes it’s a high test system
I find these arcade tear downs fascinating, cheers🤘🏻
Plenty more coming :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica look forward to it :)
Another awesome vid, thanks so much for the deep dive! I identify with the bit about you disliking collecting gd-rom games. You clearly have a love for the under-the-hood aesthetics that I think we can all appreciate. Look forward to more NAOMI!
Yeah GD-Rom just isn’t AS fun on the NAOMI side
great video, very indepth. i had no idea wtf a naomi was and was messing around with flycast and this video explained everything and had many more super interesting bits.
Thank you
Wow also dident relise this video is 1 day old too "x-files theme plays"
Lol yep just released
I actually had to say Naomi 2 I’m glad it’s backwards compatible with the first version
Yes it means you just need one board for it all
Great video! I love my Naomi 2. I really need a better controller set up for it but the capcom io I have at the moment is okay enough. Im glad I at least built a few of the dreamcast controller port adapters for it.
I def recommend that Tucson Logic IO board
I have two NAOMI 2 setups, they are so good, but I agree the amount of parts you need to set up and the amount of space that requires is just a pain in the butt. I like to keep my setups on separate wooden boards so I can swap them in and out of my astro cities, but storing them somewhere is always anoying as I don't have a lot of space to store such an awkwardly large board.
BTW one of the more important things you need to check is the super capacitor. Moreso on the NAOMI 1 due to it being closer to parts that will damage vs the NAOMI 2 (yet still important to spot)
Storage is always a headache. I’m constantly reorganizing
Facts! The first thing I did when I got my naomi was change out the super capacitor as it already was looking like it was leaking a bit. Luckily, there is no damage, but it's worth a mention for all videos. I agree that the amount of things needed to get it to run is a bit annoying and the space.
It’s def not a beginners board but it’s a fun one
virtua tennis is my favorite tennis game of all time. i don't even like realistic sports games really, but that's a great game and i put many hours into it on dreamcast.
It’s an absolute classic for a sport you wouldn’t think would make a very intriguing video game
Oddly no I’ve never played that one
I got into arcade collecting for a bit, I got a killer deal on an MVS cab with Metal Slug 3 and Bubble bobble. I ended up also getting a CPS2 B Board and an Atomiswave with a bootleg Samsho6. If Naomi DC big brother, then Atomiswave is the red headed step child lol
Haha there’s fun to be had on Atomiswave
Oh yes! Been waiting for this series! Thinking about picking up a Naomi and NetBoot for a JVS cabinet and wanted to know what I was getting into 😂
In the meantime I picked up a Pi5 instead to see how Naomi emulates. Just waiting for it to arrive.
Naomi emulates decent well. Hell of a lot less wires too
I once saw on your channel a video on how to get the naomi setup and that highly influenced me to pick one up. Now, those sun power supplies are hard to find especially in good condition. Instead of using a ATX PSU are you ready for it? I used a dreamcast power supply! I wired everything up and guess what it works! At first, I thought it wasn't but I came across the info a while back on a forum and said "what the hell! If it works it works! And if it doesn't then I'll get a proper one" I figured since the architecture was almost the same I said lets try it! I saw that the main voltages needed were already on the DC supply the 3v 5v 12v. I played many hours of marvel vs capcom 2 and powerstone without any issues. The original person to try it out said it even worked with the GDMU but I don't have one of those to test out nor I was interested since I primarily like collecting cartridges. I use the MPIONA for usb sticks with zero delay on them. At the time I was looking for a usb alternative to your db 15 because it was much easier for me. As a backup I bought the tuscon logic board you have but never really used it. I can confirm everything has been in working order.
Haha smart move as yes it has all the voltages you need!
Great to see the Naomi on your channel VGE. I have one like yours in the collection. Looks amazing for sure. 8^)
Anthony..
It’s a classic
I've actually already seen the blitztank fighter!!! Because it is SO ridiculous 🤣
Haha it’s a wild game
“This Friday.” You got my hopes up for a minute. It’s still Tuesday hah
Changed the date🤣
I've been back and forth with the Dreamcast. At the time, I thought it was the ultimate console and a dream come true. When Sega dropped it, I was very disappointed. Then, I started reading about it's spec's and felt it wasn't ideal for the games I play (Capcom 2D games) due to resolution differences. Now, I'm back to it being more-or-less faultless with a bit of help. With the RetroTink 4k and my DCDigital mod, I have things about as close to perfect as I can get them.
I really like Project Justice, the Capcom Gundam game, Ikaruga, Capcom Vs SNK 2.
Project Justice is def a classic
@@VideoGameEsoterica
Take a look at the Capcom Gundam game (2 discs) with Flycast. It looks like Model 3. Super-impressive.
I’ll take a peek
Naomi and Dreamcast were such big upgrades on the gaming visuals and performance front. I think the first Naomi game I saw in the arcade was The House of the Dead 2, and it blew me away!
I need to get a PCB for that because it’s like NAOMI except not final. It comes in a metal cage and has some variations in hardware p
Naomi wasn't a big upgrade over the Model 3 in terms of raw performance but it supported more advanced features.
In some ways Model 3 looks better than NAOMI. In other ways NAOMI beats it
The Model 3 was more powerful, especially the later revisions. The Naomi was not an upgrade, it was the opposite. It was a way to make cheaper arcade games VS the previous super expensive model x boards. The Naomi 2 was the real upgrade over those.
It had the ability to do some effects model 3 couldn’t
I almost bought a Naomi 2 a couple of years ago. I so badly wanted to consolize it but in the end the project was too difficult. :-(
Yeah that’s on the advanced end of mods
I would watch a video about PCB cleaning. We washed the arcade PCB in a bath of soap and water plus tooth brush. After that we put the in the oven with the door opened.
Haha that’s one way to do it. It’s funny my pcb cleaning video is so old now but it’s still my second most watched video of anything I’ve done
I’ve actually never seen a Naomi arcade machine in the flesh. It’s like Bigfoot to me 😂
Really? Surprising. They were everywhere in arcades back in the day
i know you've shown off the console quite a lot in the video but it'd be helpful if you could add a b-roll clip of the console from various angles rather than talking whilst showing a static image of it
Just kind of my style. The beginning 30 seconds?
Always wanted a netboot but never got around to it.
They are fun but unless you have it in a dedicated cabinet it’s just too much to leave set up all the time
So what your saying is we need a mister core 😛
An FPGA NAOMI would be a great thing
@@VideoGameEsoterica Agreed. Let's hope it's possible on MARS or any of the other new systems coming out
Let’s hope
“There’s nothing about this that would tell me this isn’t running on original hardware” 😂
Can’t remember what I said
@@VideoGameEsoterica just joking with you because you say that a lot on the Mr. videos lol
Hahaha ahh that makes sense
You gonna cover Sammy Atomiswave?
I have bought one with a gd Rom but now I have to find all the other parts to get it running. They’re not cheap
No NAOMI gets expensive
Do you have a playlist with these looks at various hardware and PCBs? I can only find playlists for individual machines/systems.
No. Probably a good idea to make one 👍
I just ordered a Dreamcast to JAMMA adapter, going to put it in one of my arcade cabinets...probably the "Metal Slug 3 in a Mace the Dark Age" one for now. Hopefully it lets every game work with standard res, if not I'll have to swap out the monitor probably.
I can’t imagine any game not working with standard res
@@VideoGameEsoterica well it uses RGB which I think does VGA to RGB conversion? I'll find out soon though.
Lmk how it goes
@@brandoggYou have to force some of the games to VGA output for a 60hz signal on European Dreamcasts but otherwise you're good to go
Lovely overview of the Naomi. I have a IONA interface to use an Xbox controller which works nicely and an ATX PSU adatper - but you are right, this system is a real challenge to setup! Any chance of later videos showing how your setup is all wired and setup? It can be such a mess but would be great to see how you managed it!
I am working on redoing my studio. Well I should say my wife is figuring it out. I’m not good with that. Then I can show more setup stuff
I was hoping you were gonna tell me someone made a Naomi/Dreamcast core for Mister :(
Haha no cores yet for any platform
Somewhat related, but are you aware of anything regarding about the third in the Gunblade series, Jet Squadron, that was planned for Naomi or possible Naomi 2? Apparently it was in testing, but hard to verify if it actually existed or not as a lot of the info and discussion around it from the early 00's is lost to time. Makes you think what other great games could have come out for it, as its such a great price of hardware 🤔
I’ve heard it went to testing but I’ve never really seen any evidence myself
If you have an arcade cabinet with JAMMA to IO board, this could have been a good opportunity to explain the annoying power supply requirements to get it going with the netdimm + Raspberry Pi
I have an older video about powering JVS NAOMI and everything along with it so I didn’t include it here
ahhh the NAOMI hardware my favourite arcade hardware of all time and i would really love to own one someday in my life, it's just a real shame that it's so god dam expensive oh well all I can do is just dream about it haha lol 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
It’s awesome hardware but yeah prices certainly aren’t going down
I thought of collecting Naomi stuff for a while but decided not to since the video interface is so incompatible with a standard JAMMA setup or supergun. It would just take too much work and effort on my end. Regardless, the Naomi is an awesome machine and it definitely had some great games. I am still considering getting a Sega ST-V, but since most of its library was ported to the Saturn I haven't been in a rush. I definitely still want to get more of the later IGS machines like the PGM2 and PGM3 even if the latter only had one game.
You can get it via JAMMA with adapters
@@VideoGameEsoterica But like you said in the video, the only adapter you can use is a Capcom one and it costs just as much as a Naomi. Unless I misunderstood or missed something? This is a genuine question btw, sometimes I miss a detail here and there lol.
No just the Capcom one exists and no it’s def not cheap
a fpga core would be nice.
Crosses fingers. hopefully 2025 2026.
I have a dreamcast thou. Plays burnt cd's no chip.
Dreamcast is super easy not to need an FPGA core for
@@VideoGameEsoterica would be nice.
Some good fighting games. naomi and dreamcast.
Hopefully one day
@@VideoGameEsoterica they said neogeo that's it. Then n64.
Cyclone 5 was funded. Probably can do more.
Just time for the developer.
The LE fitment of N64 and Saturn is near to 100%. It’s hit top end
this system have good games is fun to finish game that dreamcast have limited continues
Yes you don’t have the five total credit restrictions on certain games on the NAOMI side
Wish the f355 arcade worked on emu
It does. I’ve played it many times
@@VideoGameEsoterica demul?,too much hassles on flycast and steamdeck would b good, unless im out of date and theres other ways, ive been checking now and then for past 10yrs :)
I used Demul yes
I wonder with all these arcade boards do you have a candy cab and arcade monitor
I do not have a cab sadly. No space. We need a bigger place. Hopefully next year if this mortgage rate insanity subsides
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah that would cool
I’ll work on it soonish
Triggerheart Exelica was one of my favourites on the machine. So glad it’s been getting some love lately but the PS2 version remains definitive imo.
Then you’ll probably really enjoy a video coming soon :)
Shouldn't it be Big sister?
I've been looking on eBay for awhile I'm tempted a lot of stuff that never made it to Dreamcast
Lol you might be right
Cat pen wildin' out
His time to shine
Hey, Lu. Does the Naomi 1 run the same games as Naomi 2? I've just got one Naomi 1 to play in my Egret 3 and I am learning about it. I'm curious about the Netboot way to play.
lol I’m not Lu. No you need a NAOMI 2 for NAOMI 2 games but that will run OG NAOMI
@@VideoGameEsoterica sorry huahuahuahua
And thanks for always sharing such an amazing content =)
👍
Does a working Naomi version of Rhythm Tengoku work on a real Dreamcast by any chance? 🙄
Unfortunately no
SEGA NAOMI O DREAMCAST DE CARTUCHO...
Big Brother... or Big Sister?
Someone else mentioned that and I’m thinking yeah…sister
Are you doing okay Anthony? In your last few videos it seems you are slurring the words Video Game Esoterica and they are coming out Videosotical. I hope its just you trying to do your into quickly and nothing too serious.
Haha it’s become a meme that people laugh about so I sell it. All good. No giant strokes or anything. Not yet at least. Never know what tomorrow will bring 🤣
from today's point of view .. something like Dreamcast Pro .. "mid gen upgrade".
Def has that vibe

240. So close to the first 250 in channel history
@@VideoGameEsoterica this was 250 = )

It's not "nay-o-mi", it's pronounced "na-o-mi".
Just how I say it
In Japan, they pronounce it "Now-Me", if you want to debate how different accents, local dialects and people with preferences should pronounce things, you'd debate until you die.
Exactly. Just how it is :)
