It's a bit misleading when I say that games stopped being released when the Dreamcast was discontinued. While the Dreamcast was discontinued in March 2001 (18 months after US launch), games that were already in development continued to be released through early 2002 in the US. Though, Sega had already started releasing games for "rival consoles" by the end of 2001 (like Super Monkey Ball). It should also be noted that the Dreamcast launched in Japan in late November of 1998 and games continued to be released for years (in Japan) after it was discontinued (though a majority of the games would be considered obscure by US gamers).
I was always a Sega kid growing up. I had the Genesis (with Rocket Knight Adventures), Saturn, and of course the Dreamcast. As a kid in the early 2000s, I enjoyed games like Sonic Adventure, Soul Caliber, and Crazy Taxi immensely. I still remember the day my Dad told me that Sega discontinued the Dreamcast and feeling so heartbroken and betrayed. He had told me to get the PS2 and not the Dreamcast because Sony supported their systems for a long time. Nearly 20 years later, I ended up selling off my Dreamcast and all my games in 2019 for almost nothing. Summer of 2021, something happened. Not sure, but I became obsessed with the Dreamcast and bought another one and over the last 6 months I collected 40+ games, including some of the most rarest and expensive games. That's 4x the size of my childhood collection! Lol. I have much more fun with the Dreamcast as an adult than a kid surprisingly! Long live the Dreamcast!
The Dreamcast was part of the 6th generation that was ahead of its time. Personally i think the Dreamcast ushered in the new generation just as much as the PS2,XBOX,Gamecube that had set the tone.
I didn’t have a Dreamcast, but my brother did, so I’d play his whenever we got together - but I also remember the day Sega announced they would stop production. While most were sad, I rejoiced, because almost immediately, Best Buy slashed the price down to $49.99, and a lot of games to $19.99 or less! I picked up the console, along with everything I could get my hands on. 3 controllers (an extra white one, and two smoke), matching VMU’s for the controllers, rumble packs... Oh, and the games! I picked up DOA2, Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio, Metropolis Street racer, and Sega GT for $9.99 each! In those few months after, I grabbed games as Best Buy, Circuit City, and other stores started discounting them. It was my favorite console that I didn’t own - until I did, and I took full advantage of the clearance prices. I have a nice collection at about 110 games or so (including about a dozen Japanese titles). I wanted to go for a full set, but alas, there are just too many super expensive games that I never managed to get sooner.
I love the Sega Saturn as well. It's a shame the Saturn never really got to experience much excitement in the US like the Dreamcast did outside of the hardcore Sega fans.
I wonder how things would go if the Sega Saturn 32X fiasco never happened in North America. Would it have stayed competitive with the PlayStation or even been the better of the console.
@@pcharl01 between the 32x and the surprise launch of the Saturn, Sega dug their own grave. It shocking how those two decisions had such monumental impact to their downfall. though really, the behind the scenes of both decisions is the same: Sega of Japan's leadership at the time. fascinating and tragic.
For me the rapid disappearance of Dreamcast and SEGA's departure from the console market was such a shock that I was unable to play anything for 10 years. I disconnected from the world of video games completely until 2011, the year of my son's birth. Great video as always!
I still own my Dreamcast I got back on 9/9/99. It's amazing that the system is still getting games into 2020! Over at Mega Visions Magazine, we're gearing up for our yearly Dreamcast Marathon. I love going back and playing the library and proud I was able to finish collecting the North American set. The modding community is great too with new projects and developments still happening and keeping the system alive. Heck, I still play Phantasy Star Online from time to time on the Dreamcast and ONLINE!
That's great to hear. The fanbase is really doing their best to keep the system alive :) Since you have a full US set, I've gotta ask: What are your top 5 games?
The Dreamcast was ahead of it's time. What a great console! What a shame that Sega departed from the console business. Perhaps Sega will eventually make a comeback. Let's hope! The video game crash of '83 killed off quite a few systems and one of them is the Vectrex. The good news is that the homebrew scene is still active but finding a system is quite a task.
To this very day, Dreamcast is my favorite console along with Shenmue being my favorite game of all time. It is full of many games that still hold up to this day, which is why I love it. Everything about Dreamcast appeals to my tastes. Because the DC is easy to program for, it's why it has such a strong homebrew community to this day.
I still play my Dreamcast. One of my favorite aspects of the system is the fact that it has many ports of ps1/n64 games which look much better and run in 480p, which is actually displayed well on modern TVs. If you want to use original hardware to play a game like soul reaver or tony hawks pro skater 1, it’s going to be best on Dreamcast. Especially on a hdtv.
Absolutely, the Dreamcast only lasted 2 years and 5 months in North America. So much of its games went on to be released on PS2, Xbox, & GC. Imagine Grand Theft Auto III or Mortal Kombat Deception or Resident Evil 4 on the SEGA Console
I feel like Sega probably would've eventually released a controller with a second analog stick on it as well, similar to how they released that 6-button controller during the Sega Genesis days.
Never knew much about the dreamcast, but this video almost brought tears to my eyes. Hearing that a console only got games for 8 months is almost like hearing a celebrity you knew for a while died. young. And buying a console AFTER the news that it's discontinued almost feels like adopting a pet knowing it's days are counted.
I just recently got the dreamcast but always wanted to own one because of the Arcade ports which still hold up today. I got one with 4 controllers for 90 dollars last month! Too bad the games are expensive af now but I'm burning and playing and really enjoying the console! Great Video gamecube and dreamcast are the best and most underrated consoles ever!
Sega’s horrific mismanagement of it’s company and cash are just depressing. Dreamcast was one of my favourite consoles, and I’d love to have seen what else could have been released if it had more time.
I love the Dreamcast and for me, Sega going out of business felt like the end of videogames as I know them. It's weird, but I think most of the stuff after the Dreamcast are kinda playable movies of some sort, while Sega games were first of all just games. Maybe this is also the main difference between japanese and US games? I don't know for sure, but what I know is, that the Dreamcast was and is awesome. This particular style and the 90s attitude that Sega bleeds out every pore is something todays kids won't understand as much I guess. Made my Dreamcast into a modding beast by the way, DCHDMI, Fan-Mod, DCEmu, LED-Mod.....just need a new power supply :D
I respect your passion regarding Sega. I agree it was sad to see an actual video-game company decline. My experience with the Dreamcast was limited, except for Soul Calibur. That game was awesome fun in multiplayer. Beyond that, most of the games look like the early 3d stuff I hate, but I keep an open mind and plan on purchasing one in the future.
If I'm honest, I had a hurdle to get over with the Dreamcast as well when I started collecting retro stuff a decade ago. I enjoyed it as a kid but none of it seemed appealing to me until I gave it a few chances and then started to feel like I could really appreciate what it was trying to do. I've just liked it more and more over the years. There's a handful of the more arcade-y feeling games similar to Soul Calibur that you may enjoy. No rush. All in due time!
8th grade, best friend got it on launch, played the hell out of crazy taxi. Best intro graphic of all time. My friends all moved on to ps2/xbox quickly after. Out of all retro consoles this may be the one I try to get, since it is so foreign to me.
"YA YA YA YA YA!" (OffSpring Intro). The Dreamcast port is still considered the best port by many just because it has the original soundtrack that people are so attached to. The console has some funny quirks (as well as fun tricks) that would be funny to go over with you, like how loud the laser is when reading the disc :)
@@RetroBirdGaming LOL well that is great too but I meant the Dreamcast title sequence, the sound is just something else, they nailed it : ua-cam.com/video/3gskHksi2Yc/v-deo.html
My favorite console so it hurt badly when they discontinued it so quickly. I was sad when I got it, because I knew I wouldn't get a PS2, but then I fell in love with it and had amazing memories from Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Sonic Adventure, Grandma 2, and NFL 2k. I love it still and I guess it's nice we can burn games to play on it.
When I was 15, I remember the videogame store of my hometown in Italy showcased this console with Soul Calibur. Even though at that age what I really wanted was the PS2, I remember being fascinated with it. It was the luxury item that I could never get. I only managed to buy one very recently, during a trip to Japan in 2018, and since then I play with it quite regularly. I love everything about it, except the D-pad which is a disgrace.
Totally agree! That d-pad was atrocious for fighters! I was around the same age at the time, I "tricked" me lil brother into buying a DC while I waited and saved for the PS2, I wanted to play DC without buying it myself 😂😂
I didn't get one when it came out but I very much remember the ads and the 9/9/99 release date. Hell, I remember the really weird Saturn commercials with The Theater of the Mind and how bizarre it was. I didn't get either system until about 6 years ago. Grabbed around 20 games for the Dreamcast while they were still inexpensive for the most part. I actually haven't gotten around to playing all of them (most of them) and I'm blown away by them. If I had one when it was still commercially relevant I think my head would have exploded. I played Skies of Arcadia (I actually own both versions but played the Dreamcast one first) and it's in my top 10 favorite games ever made. But I mean, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Maken X, Record of Lodos War, Power Stone, Omikrom, Soul Calibur, Elemental Gimmick Gear, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Zombie Revenge, Typing of the Dead, Grandia 2, Silver, Soul Reaver Legacy of Kain, Tokyo Street Racers and so many more like the first really big MMO game Phantasy Star Online. This system is quite possibly THE most impressive system of just consistently amazing games period.
I love the Dreamcast. I never had one until a few years ago but real talk, it was the last time I was blown away by a next Gen Console. I remember my buddy Rudy having me over to play it and thinking this thing can't compete with N64 or PS1. Boy was I wrong and blown away. I recently picked up Resident Evil 2 for the console and Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves for Christmas Eve. Looking forward to playing aome of that.
I'm 2 years late but enjoy resident evil 2 it's the best version of the game due to being based off the pc port so it's the only console release with extra pc content it has better character models and the vmu shows your health and ammo :D
I didn’t have this when growing up but my friend did. He got everything on release day. I had a lot of fun playing DC games but still haven’t jumped at a console of my own. Some day I’ll make my way to these great games.
Yeah, it's tough when every week I'm talking about something else that is great. Can't buy everything all at once. In due time you'll have the chance to get to some of these things.
I still play my Dreamcast often has I'm pursuing a full set. I'm about 60 to 70 games away from owning every US Dreamcast game. I enjoy your videos so keep up the good work
I bought the Dreamcast on its launch day back in 1999 at toys R us. I bought sonic adventure, power stone, and Virtua fighter 3 tb and a memory card. A few months later I found out about the PS2 coming out and I thought well the Dreamcast can go toe to toe with it. My friends and I had a blast with the Dreamcast and at the time, I thought no more new systems because I was done trying to keep up with the best every 5 years. I can play Dreamcast on a PC and still enjoy it very much.
I feel that the Dreamcast was the last system where it was a huge improvement from the previous generation. Going from the Saturn, PlayStation and N64 to the Dreamcast was amazing. My jaw dropped when I saw nfl2k’s graphics. Now, when a system comes out, it’s like small graphical improvements and faster loading times.
Retro Bird Hydro Thunder was one I picked up last year. So many memories of playing the arcade version as a kid. I also picked up Resident Evil Code: Veronica and that one has been a lot of fun! I picked up Toy Commander, but haven’t played much of it yet.
I love the Dreamcast to this day!!!! Still a fun console to play on! So many great games - Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, NBA 2K series, NFL 2K series, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing 1 and 2, NFL Blitz 2000 and 2001, NBA Showtime, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Cannon Spike, Hydro Thunder, Sonic Shuffle, Virtua Tennis, Sega Rally, Gauntlet Legends, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, etc. Too bad it had a truncated lifespan. I always love bringing it and a small CRT TV's to restaurants, etc. to help pass the time.
I got the DC shortly after release pre-owned from EB Games and still have it today. To me, the DC delivered on that at-home arcade experience which I couldn't afford with Neo Geo. To this day there are a lot of ports that have never appeared elsewhere. My personal shout out would be for Tech Romancer which was actually better than arcade perfect.
I misread your subscriber count as 1.4 million. Your videos are awesome. My brain is suffering cognitive dissonance seeing your subscriber count isn't way higher than it currently already is.
I remember the first time I jumped online to play PSO and being friggin mind blown that I was playing with other, real, people across the the U.S. that was about 17 years ago and still one of my fav memories
@@RetroBirdGaming I def remember when halo 2 took off.. i do remember thinking then that, I played PSO online with the dial up modem which was even crazier bc the loddy was full of people lol
I got the Dreamcast on day one and I loved it and was hart broken when it was discontinued .I don't have one now but if I could find one for a reasonable price I would get one and start collecting for it again
yes i also have a dreamcast. had an issue with the controller ports that i had fixed up. plays games wonderfully and i have a model that can read burned discs.
You really hit the nail on the head. Dreamcast was so ahead of its time! I hated the sega/nintendo dichotomy, because I loved my n64 but also loved playing dreamcast at my cousins' who had both. My favs were Sonic Adventure 2 and Power Stone, so that Sega/Capcom connection is legit
i've recently started collecting for the dreamcast since we got the disc drive repaired, and it's such a great console with such a tragically short lifespan part of me wonders what would've happened if they kept going for one more year or so
When it was annouced that SEGA would leave the hardware market and would only support the DC for one more year, I was absolutely gutted. I found out in a store when I bought Tomb Raider 4 in a school break. I sat in my school bench totally stunned (was 16 at the time).
The Sega Dreamcast 😍. I remember I was the only one who got it out of all my friends. They would come over to play we would have a great time. I ended up having a huge collection of games because they would buy Dreamcast games and bring them over to play and leave them with me. The last game we played together before we all went our separate ways(some of us to collage and the others to the military) was psychic wars 2012. I have great memories of the Dreamcast.
Still have it and my collection. Bout a Akura to keep playing on modern displays today. It looks good but nothing like a good ol' CRT to make it all make sense. Sadly my CRT is dying... and I don't think I'll get another due to it being my only console I own nowadays that will take advantage of it the most. If I can find a good deal on smaller one. I'll def consider grabbing a new one. My favorite Dreamcast games are Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Sonic Adventure, Zombie Revenge, House of the Dead 2, Grandia 2.
@@RetroBirdGaming ... yep. System sales went ballistic after GTA 3 came out. People were buying systems just for that game, and when you consider how cheap Dreamcasts towards the end, I think that would have injected something back into its life
IMO, what killed the DC was the looming release of the ps2. I lived through this and I had a ton of friends that didn't buy one for this reason. I can't imagine I was alone hearing this.
Definitely. The PS1 was a Juggernaut and the PS2 was really being hyped up to the point that people were holding off on getting a console until it came out.
Eh, what really killed the Dreamcast is the same thing that killed Sega in the console business as a whole, and that's Sega themselves. Especially the infighting.
@@darthpryce Eh. Yeah, nah, it was mainly the PS2. Due to all of SEGA's past blunders and failures, it was nut-cuttin' time and the End Game for them by the end of the 5th gen, and they really _needed_ the Dreamcast to succeed in order to stay afloat in the hardware market. And it was pretty much singlehandedly thanks to the PS2 that it didn't happen. That is why it is remembered so fondly. Because it released long before any of the other 6th gen consoles, and was such a powerful console with a strong library, but the word-of-mouth fell largely upon def ears because of the PS2 hype. And then when the PS2 actually released, it just crushed it. And they quickly had to bow out of the hardware market or face going completely under. Hell, SEGA themselves developed an RPG that was a meta commentary on the whole thing for the Dreamcast called SEGAGAGA (SEGA Simulation) in Japan. The PS2 was definitely the final nail in the coffin.
@@AgentMorgan2010 You literally just proved what I said, right. Sega wouldn't have even been in the position they were in with the Dreamcast if it wasn't for the terrible decisions they made as a company. So nah, if it wasn't for that, they would still be in the console business today. PS2 just closed the casket.
@@darthpryce No, not particularly. Because you were discounting the PS2 as the main contributing factor in that equation. I'm saying it was. As far as the Dreamcast is concerned, the main contributing factor to its untimely demise was the PS2 and the PS2 hype. Whatever financial quagmire SEGA was facing is immaterial to the quality of that console, as well as the unique software they produced for it. Based on the quality of their efforts, they should have had a more substantial impact within the market, but the whole enterprise was more or less completely ignored by the majority of consumers, again, due to the PS2 hype. If SEGA had never put out hardware like the 32X, or had done things differently with the Saturn, they may have been in a better position financially to hang on longer, but I don't think it would have changed the outcome as far as the PS2 decimating them in market share (just like it did everything else). Unless we're saying that the Saturn wins the 5th gen in this alternate universe, and Sony fails to cultivate a following and withdraws from the market or something. Who's to even say where SEGA would have theoretically ended up if they had made different decisions leading up to that point? No one could say with any certainty. They certainly were never as big or as powerful a company as Sony or Microsoft, or hell, even Nintendo. Who's to say they'd still be in the console biz today? Honestly, looking back, the only alternate universe where I can see that happening is a world where neither Sony nor Microsoft enters the home video game console market. Or a world where the strength of the Dreamcast won the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere, overcoming the colossal PS2 hype, and SEGA had clawed their way back to the top and stayed there. But that was never gonna happen.
Dreamcast was and still awesome to me, I remember pay 250 dollars for it. I first game was of course Sonic adventures and my second Soul Calibur, my third was Tokyo Extreme Racers
Yeah, it's definitely unique because it sort of plays like a 3D beat 'em up but not quite since there's such an emphasis on using the guns. The closest thing I could maybe think of is Die Hard Arcade or Dynamite Cop (also on Dreamcast).
Actually playing mine now. Got it a couple years ago for 40 bucks. It’s awesome. It’s not perfect, the controller needs two sticks, the VMU doesn’t hold much data, etc, but this thing has soul. I have around 60 DC games and while some I like more than others, I haven’t played a bad one yet. They are mostly A-B tier. People constantly harp on Wii, which I also love, for shovelware. True. But so did NES and 2600. With DC and it’s lean library it’s almost all stuff you can appreciate. Capcom, SEGA and Namco? Made a ton of very good if slightly flawed games. It’s forward thinking but retro at the same time. Always been a huge arcade fan, and while the Genesis was a huge step in that direction, I think the DC pretty much nailed it. And for such a small library, it does have depth. I want to complete Armada one day. Or EGG. Or Toy Commander. Or Re-Volt. Or Seaman. Or Space Channel. I wish I would have picked up one sooner. I went with PS1 and Xbox after the Saturn failed to impress me.
@@RetroBirdGaming Thanks! People ask me why I haven't bought a current console. Between Game Cube, Wii, Wiiu, virtual console, Genesis mini and DC... I have plenty of games to play. The other day I cracked open pac man classic and it was awesome.Gold is where you find it.
same for me i would always play crazy taxi or Daytona USA :D but recently i bought one at a pawnshop for way to much money "cough $107 cough"......it's in almost mint condition other then like 2 or 3 little scuff marks on it
Still have my original dreamcast and play it quite often. Just played Phantasy star online with the BBA with it. Great Console for fighters and so much more. I even have a second fully modded dreamcast just because i dont want to hurt my original. To this day, its one of my favorite consoles of all time. I was there on 9-9-99 and im still here.
I do feel for the Dreamcast, but I still say the Saturn is the true sob story. Many a gamer still loves the Dreamcast. Nobody remembers the Saturn (except Retrobird!). Tis better to be loved then lost than to be never loved at all and forgotten
I was 15 in 2000 and I had my first summertime job, Dreamcast was the 1st game console I paid for myself, it's the only console I have left from when I was a kid, (Genesis,N64,PS1 and NES all burnt up in house fire I happened to be at a friend's house with my Dreamc-ast when it happened) I absolutely love that thing, it's still under my TV to this day right next to my other failed console the Wii U 😆
Dreamcast was one of the best consoles and ahead of its time. Really miss it. I wish I knew what happened to my system and games. I’m feeling the itch to do some playing.
completely unrelated to the topic at hand but after binge watching through a lot of the backlog of this channel - before this video, I only heard one swear word. This single video had four! It is crazy how the simple absence of something becomes more noticeable when it shows up later. I like the clean natrue of this channel! (And by no means do I think a few swears here and there alter that - I just found it interested personally) haha anyway... Dreamcast rules, would have loved to see the future of the system if it lasted a few years longer... Great video, as always!
Totally! I eventually just stopped swearing in my videos because it felt off to me. In any case, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the channel and thank you!
Thank you 🙏 for not being a Sony fan boy and saying the PS2 destroyed the Dreamcast. Yes, it was a contributing factor along with DVD 📀 becoming a thing at the time and many other factors I remember back then since I lived through that time, but with the right DD put into this you will discover the main reason for SEGA not being around is because of SEGA themselves. Nice 👍 info and presentation in this video. Sounds like a gamer with a level head who has respect and appreciation for the DC.
I saved two Dreamcasts from the trash a couple years ago. Both had bad drives, ended up modding one of them with a GDEMU and I gotta say, it's become my favorite retro console to go back to.
I've always thought that Sega would do well to make a handheld Dreamcast with online capability and it's full library of games available for download and the ability to link to a TV, maybe by linking wirelessly to a device with an HDMI output and a charging dock. They could call it the Dream Gear. With online support and the ability to play portable or on a TV, I think they could even manage successful new game releases on the console. I think they would have competed better with PS2 if they had used DVD based game discs rather than CD based games and the PS2 had pressure sensitivity which would have been a great addition to make better use of triggers and a joystick. Still, I loved this console and always felt like it's potential was underused. Does anyone else still remember how heavily it was advertised that this would be the first console capable of AI? "Shhh, it's thinking"
Sega basically did everything right with the Dreamcast. It was just ill-fated due to the company's myriad of poor decisions preceeding its release. Anyways I have my black sega sports model with MvC2, Powerstone 2, Soul Calibur and Shenmue. Hardly a collection in it's own right, but a proud longstanding member of my greater gaming collection.
@@RetroBirdGaming for sure, definitely a quality over quantity angle. I had the sonic adventure games as well but sold those off for the gamecube versions. I had some others that I've sold off over the years.
Dreamcast is still one of my favorite consoles I wasn’t born until 98 so I wasn’t around when it was relevant but I still love it and have a good library of games for it
Strange, and maybe it's cause of my area, but I felt the Dreamcast was underrated even when it was new. I felt like the only one who had one and was even talking about it back in the day.
Yeah, that's somewhat unusual. Only thing I can say is that not necessarily everybody had one because a lot of us had just barely owned our PS1s or N64s for 2 or 3 years, so getting another console was out of the question if we were relying on our parents to get it for us. I remember it was the "lucky" kids who got theirs because it was essentially a second console. I remember for me, there was no chance in hell I was getting it even though it looked cool and I would've liked it. Either way, I remember everybody being really excited about it and that even held true when I went to visit my cousins in different states. The console also mostly sold well initially in the launch window and then sales fell off soon after etc. etc.
In short, mother fucking DVD's god damnit. To add to it, DVD was a format Sony had control over. SEGA would need to pay licensing fees to use DVD's, Sony could just freeload. In a perfect world, the Dreamcast would have won out
Yes, to think that something that had nothing to do with actual video games (DVD Movies) played a part in killing off one of gaming's iconic companies in the hardware race just doesn't feel right, to say the least.
Online games like PSO didn't have to worry about it because the disc was basically just to log in. Playing online and chatting with friends was what it was all about!
I still can’t believe how good pso is. It’s so simple and so repetitive but it’s like I can’t put it down. I think about playing it while I’m at work. When I get home I play till it’s time for bed. I also like playing quake 3 arena on it too.
I never had a dreamcast, kinda wanted one. BUT. And this is a huge but. I absolutely love Microsoft. I got 3 or 4 free games this week with my rewards points. Microsoft has allowed to amass an unbelievably enormous collection of games digitally over the past 15 years. I still have access to games you can no longer get like TMNT: Out of the Shadows. Which has nothing to do with the movie. Oh yeah I got Lego Batman for free this month with games with gold. One of the games I got for free was Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham Deluxe Edition. And the past few days I've been rocking Lego Indiana Jones which I got for free a couple months ago with games with gold. I love Sega and think that they're an integral part of not only the video game industry currently but also video game history. I also love Nintendo. I'm loving my switch that was bday gift from a few different loved ones last month. But I have to say the my Xbox one/360 games are the core of my gaming. Which DOES include, counting each game in a compilation individually, a hundred or more retro games. Yeah, I'm a man of Microsoft, I'm an X-men.
I feel like the Dreamcast's games were so ahead of their time and were frankly better than a majority of PS2's titles. I feel like the thing that would have saved the Dreamcast is if it had a DVD drive instead of the proprietary GD ROM format. I feel like that was the only thing that gave PS2 an edge over Dreamcast other than name recognition and hype.
I grew up with Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast. They are my preferred gaming styles for sure. So yeah when it was discontinued I was pretty devastated. I ended up getting an Xbox next since they at least had some Sega games on it and I did enjoy it a lot but there was no replacement for Sega. If I had a better scope on the kinds of games being released for other consoles I probably would have gone with the GameCube next but oh well, I have them all now :)
And at 7:02 you had to break out the legendary total control 3 , which probably cost as much as a Nintendo switch mini to have now a days. I was going to video game expos on Long Island , NY a few years ago. And they were practically giving these adapters for Saturn controllers into the Dreamcast for $25-40. Since the pandemic however that is a pipe dream
I absolutely agree with you. I've always thought that Sega leaving the hardware business disrupted many great video game series. Most of the games on Sony and Microsoft would have still been made if they hadn't joined the race. Final Fantasy 7 was always going to get made regardless of Sony.
It was the first console I bought new in 2000. It was a huge jump in picture quality especially when on vga! My friends all liked it, but they were all PlayStation boys so waited for the ps2, which didn't even have anything worthwhile until 2001 anyway!
Oh, Sega yep. Making stupid mistakes since 1985. They had Tonka Toys distrubute the Master System. It only was sold in Toy's "R" Us stores and speciality video game stores. I had never seen one in person until my dad came home with one in 1987. I had been playing Shonibi, Out Run, Hang On, and Double Dragon in the arcades. Wondering if there was a home port of any of them. My cousins had Double Dragon for the NES but it felt very different and was only one player. Well My dad came home with all four games. Man, I was in heaven. I could play my favorite arcade games at home. Oh yeah, that sweet 2 player mode in Double Dragon. I still play them to this day. Sega got pretty lucky with the Genesis. I had one in 1989. A great little console. When Capcom sued Nintendo for the right to port Final Fight to the Sega CD all of a sudden Sega had third party support. When the big "N" made the big blood mistake with the original MK, Sega jumped all over it. Then other awesome games started coming out and the people who bought a Genesis for MK had other games to play. As I've mentioned before I skipped the Saturn in favor of the Playstation. A mistake I kinda regret to this day. But mistakes were made there too. Had Sega packed an awesome 2-D side scroller like Astal in with the console day one, it might have gotten people's attention. Sega should have stuck to their 2-D expertise intstead of trying to compete with Sony. They should have went the way of Nintendo. Just said we have Sonic, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, and all the other Sega games you love just they look prettier and play better as well. The console probably still would not have sold very well, but the games would have had high attach rates. They could still release VF and Panzer Dragoon as well. They would have made money off their games. Man, that would have been sweet. Nintendo realized along time a go that people love their style of games and gameplay and they will by their console for those games. Once they have you sold on their games them they can sell you the console. They got lucky with the WII. Okay we come to the Dreamcast. My buddy bought this thing day one. He invited me over to check it out. My jaw hit the floor. NFL2K was awesome I had Madden on the Playstation it looked like crap in comparison. I went and bought me a dreamcast. Absolutly love the console. Sega finally made that Arcade to Home connection that they had been striving for. I was even surprised at how well the online functionality worked as well. Far better than Nintendo has ever offered. I picked up some truly great games on the Dreamcast. Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmu, Sega racing (their answer to Gran Tursimo). Heck, the thing even had playstation games on it. Through the bleemcast disks you could play Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid, and Gran Tursimo 2 with awesome improvments. Even the PS2 could not play them as good. Oh, by the way the last offically released Dreamcast game NHL2k2. I bought my copy brand new from Best Buy in Feb, 2002.
Sega focusing more on making 2D games for the Saturn is something I think about all the time. I would've loved to see some true sequels to the popular 16-bit classics made with the 2D power of the Saturn. You're right. It could've been something really special. And you are correct that NHL 2K2 was the last officially released game in the US. Despite being discontinued in March 2001 they still had games trickle out. What's weird is that NHL 2K2 was the only release of 2002, with most of their last games coming out by the end of 2001 and they even had stuff like Super Monkey Ball come out for the GameCube holiday 2001. That's a game I would have to imagine would've been on the Dreamcast had it not been discontinued.
@@RetroBirdGaming the last "official' software I bought for the dreamcast was the internet ver 3 software. It came out in about June 2002. Paid $6.00 for it on planet webs web site. It added Java capabilities and was optimized for the broadband adaptor.
Sega Dreamcast was the last game console that I pre-ordered and purchased on launch day, along with Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, and a glitchy Ready to Rumble boxing. $199 was a steal for such a powerful console. While I still have a Dreamcast (a replacement unit for my original one that died many years ago), many of the best games on Dreamcast can now be played on other systems in one form or another. Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue I and II, Sonic Adventure I and II, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and Jet Grind Radio can all be played on my Xbox 360/Xbox One. As a result, I don't have much need to keep my Dreamcast hooked up, but still have it around in case I want to play one of those games that were not ported (or in the case of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is too expensive to play on other systems). One cool feature of the Dreamcast that many don't know about is that if you play a cd in it, after a while it has a very cool glowing light show on the screen.
Definitely gaming's most tragic console. Loved it so much, the game library was awesome and oh the potential of that broadband adapter... so much missed opportunity.
You can't help but love the DREAMCAST. I loved the DREAMCAST, fortunately I hear there is a thriving home brew community. (can any one hook me up, please.) There's still so much love out there for DREAMCAST
I remember all the hoopla about the Dreamcast, though I never owned one. I was having so much fun discovering the PS1 library at the time it came out that I didn't care about it. Soul Blade kind of made me want it for Soul Calibur 1, because I had seen SC2 and the original, but not the SC1. Other than that, I felt very little reason to buy it as I was beginning to withdraw a little from the arcade scene at that point and didn't know a lot of the "new" games it boasted. I still liked my old ones just fine.
Honestly I think Sonic Adventure 2 was a Great game for SEGA to leave the dreamcast on lol
Also more games continued to come out in Europe such as headhunter, Rez and of course shenmue 2
CAPCOM was such a devoted developer to the Dreamcast. They released so many great games for it.
Every genre too, not just fighting games. All top tier stuff!
It was the end of an era for us older retro gaming people. The PS2/Gamecube/Xbox ushered in a new generation of gamers.
Sweet! I love these kinds of stories.
I saved 10% by switching to Geico. My flex is better.
@@stephenschneider2171 weird flex but okay...
I remember my friend Brad had it and I thought it was so futuristic since it could go online.
The power of the internet! hahah
Retro Bird yep!
The Dreamcast was such an underrated console, it sucks that it was discontinued in such a short time :( Same thing with the Sega Saturn.
I love the Sega Saturn as well. It's a shame the Saturn never really got to experience much excitement in the US like the Dreamcast did outside of the hardcore Sega fans.
Both ruled when it came to arcade games.
It was the very first console I ever bought on my own
Still have mine and love it!
Nice. The first console that you buy on your own is a pretty sweet feeling!
The DC was the first and last console I ever bought the entire launch line up for, it was gold at around 14 titles in the UK.
NICE. What an exciting launch that must've been. So many good games on Day 1.
@@RetroBirdGaming I think Echo was the most exciting, never seen anything like it before and it really felt like the future was here! I'm so old!
To this very day, Dreamcast is my favorite console along with Shenmue being my favorite game of all time. It is full of many games that still hold up to this day, which is why I love it. Everything about Dreamcast appeals to my tastes. Because the DC is easy to program for, it's why it has such a strong homebrew community to this day.
i still play Virtua Figther 3tb, Tennis 2k2, Daytona USA, on the Dreamcast
I still play my Dreamcast. One of my favorite aspects of the system is the fact that it has many ports of ps1/n64 games which look much better and run in 480p, which is actually displayed well on modern TVs. If you want to use original hardware to play a game like soul reaver or tony hawks pro skater 1, it’s going to be best on Dreamcast. Especially on a hdtv.
Please come online in pso
A story to make a hard heart criminal cry…
Sega’s horrific mismanagement of it’s company and cash are just depressing. Dreamcast was one of my favourite consoles, and I’d love to have seen what else could have been released if it had more time.
I'm sure we would have even watched Resident Evil 4 on the Dreamcast.
Jet Set Radio or Jet Grind Radio will always be the title for me.
Those are the kinds of games I would like to see Sega still making these days.
I loved Sega Dreamcast; Powerstone, Vigilante 8 second offense, Sonic Adventure 2, Jet Grind Radio...I even loved Sega Saturn; Nights 🌙
Yeah, the Saturn is awesome as well.
Just slightly beats out the PS1 intro in my opinion
I'll never forget the hype around the release of the Dreamcast.
I agree with that and the fact it came so soon after those consoles made the leap even more exciting.
I only had a few Dreamcast games when I was a kid, so it’s exciting to collect for it now. There’s so many awesome games for it.
Nice! What have been some of your favorites that you've picked up as an adult?
Retro Bird Hydro Thunder was one I picked up last year. So many memories of playing the arcade version as a kid. I also picked up Resident Evil Code: Veronica and that one has been a lot of fun! I picked up Toy Commander, but haven’t played much of it yet.
Nice! That's pretty cool you actually played the arcade version of Hydro Thunder. That thing was LOUD and so awesome for it :)
Retro you are a top banana in my book keep it up
Thank you!
Love the Dreamcast. Bought and played like crazy then gave it away to another kid to enjoy. Its was a fantastic system.
I can imagine. I didn't have that experience until years later with Halo 2, but it still blew me away.
All models can read burned discs, that’s what killed it , everybody bought one in my town just to buy copied games for like 3.00
my Dreamcast is being fixed at a retro/modern game store and my top expensive game i bought was Canon spike witch costed me $200 plus
That's like when i spent about 100 bucks on Power Stone 2. 😂
@@adamdenardis5438 LOL telling you, these rare games extremely expensive, Project Justice is another raging from $200 to $300
You really hit the nail on the head. Dreamcast was so ahead of its time! I hated the sega/nintendo dichotomy, because I loved my n64 but also loved playing dreamcast at my cousins' who had both. My favs were Sonic Adventure 2 and Power Stone, so that Sega/Capcom connection is legit
Yeah, I feel like a lot of the people who picked a side of Sega or Nintendo, are now both pro Sega/Nintendo as opposed to Sony and Microsoft.
@@RetroBirdGaming I'm a big "why cant we all be friends" guy now. But I'd xbox decided to pull out gaming forever, I wouldn't miss it as much
I was 3 years old born in 1996 love this console
i've recently started collecting for the dreamcast since we got the disc drive repaired, and it's such a great console with such a tragically short lifespan
part of me wonders what would've happened if they kept going for one more year or so
The ease of piracy might still have killed it early.
When it was annouced that SEGA would leave the hardware market and would only support the DC for one more year, I was absolutely gutted. I found out in a store when I bought Tomb Raider 4 in a school break. I sat in my school bench totally stunned (was 16 at the time).
I remember the day. It was pretty sad.
Rockstar were actually programming for Dreamcast and PS2. I think if Sega held on alittle longer, GTA3 would have sold more systems for them.
That's pretty interesting to think about.
My favorite Dreamcast game has always been Zombie Revenge - nothing else like that game on any other system that I’m aware of
Yeah, it's definitely unique because it sort of plays like a 3D beat 'em up but not quite since there's such an emphasis on using the guns. The closest thing I could maybe think of is Die Hard Arcade or Dynamite Cop (also on Dreamcast).
Great Job on this Video! Keep up the good work with your Videos!
Thank you so much!
@@RetroBirdGaming Your Welcome!
That's great to hear and 60 games is a lot if you ask me! Plenty of good stuff to play.
@@RetroBirdGaming Thanks! People ask me why I haven't bought a current console. Between Game Cube, Wii, Wiiu, virtual console, Genesis mini and DC... I have plenty of games to play. The other day I cracked open pac man classic and it was awesome.Gold is where you find it.

same for me i would always play crazy taxi or Daytona USA :D but recently i bought one at a pawnshop for way to much money "cough $107 cough"......it's in almost mint condition other then like 2 or 3 little scuff marks on it
When you "called your cousin" I really wanted to see a retro cordless phone in your hand...
Ahhh, I certainly would have if I could have :)
The Dreamcast was before my time as a gamer, but I vaguely remember ads for that and the N64 on TV in the late 90's.
If Sega would come out with another console today, sales would be huge.
Nice video I honestly think it's a pretty good console
Thank you and good to hear you like it!
My family was in financial ruin when this system came out so I missed this one. This is how I felt when the sega saturn failed. My favorite console.
Those are 4 really iconic games for the system though. No shame in small collections.
@@RetroBirdGaming for sure, definitely a quality over quantity angle. I had the sonic adventure games as well but sold those off for the gamecube versions. I had some others that I've sold off over the years.
It happens. I find having less games for certain consoles is actually kind of nice because it helps give focus to what you choose to play.
I hated when people trash talk about the dreamcast and saturn their such a good consoles in my opinion sega haters are annoying
Dreamcast is still one of my favorite consoles I wasn’t born until 98 so I wasn’t around when it was relevant but I still love it and have a good library of games for it
tragic not if you got one on clearance for peanuts back in the day one my fav consoles.
I loved the Dreamcast
The console also mostly sold well initially in the launch window and then sales fell off soon after etc. etc.
You burning the games .? We all did back in the day , I had all the games and paid zero for them , that’s why it died , no copy protection at all
The Dreamcast is probably the only console that didn’t deserved its fate
I consider things that came out over 20 years ago to be considered "Retro". So right now that includes the 90's and earlier.
@@RetroBirdGaming It almost feels like cheating to be honest. The format wars killed the dreamcast, not the console competition
Especially since the PS2 being able to play DVDs does nothing for us now as retro gamers.
Yeah but GDRoms could still have big games. Fighting games really shined because of all the animations and music they could hold.
Online games like PSO didn't have to worry about it because the disc was basically just to log in. Playing online and chatting with friends was what it was all about!
I got my Dreamcast from a friend for only $50 a few years back with a few games, including Sonic Adventure.
Heck at E3 2000 SEGA announced a DVD playing version of the dreamcast was announced though didn't have the time to come out
I grew up with Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast.
Adore the Dreamcast. Still want one...
I still play my Dreamcast. The console is ageless.
Yeah, I feel the same way about it :)
Perfect console for an arcade cabinet! 👍👍
It was the first console I bought new in 2000. It was a huge jump in picture quality especially when on vga! My friends all liked it, but they were all PlayStation boys so waited for the ps2, which didn't even have anything worthwhile until 2001 anyway!
I still play the dreamcast. Fantastic local multiplayer console!
I wonder if that had just in the pipeline long enough that they just figured they might as well release it.
@@RetroBirdGaming yeah, that is my guess. Sega told planet web that no longer were supporting the system so they could just release it on there own.
I want sega to make a new console!
You and me both!
It was ahead of it's Time i remember playing PSO Online with 56k Modem in late 1999
Yes it *IS* the Most TRAGIC Console of ALL DAMN Time...
I *HATE* to this day what happened to this AMAZING System!!
Definitely gaming's most tragic console. Loved it so much, the game library was awesome and oh the potential of that broadband adapter... so much missed opportunity.
Yeah, Dreamcast is the cut off for “retro”
I tend to agree with that, though I've been convinced by certain arguments when it comes to GameCube.
For now. I think that the timeline for retro grows the longer we go.
I should have never traded my dreamcast in the prices went way up on it now
Yeah, it definitely blew up a bit in the second hand market.
