I think it’s a masterpiece. Deep, rich, daring, smokey, adventurous, darkish, animalic in the most elegant way. No powerhouse but masculinity in a gentle sophisticated way. Got a brown 70’s vibe that I love.
These three Carons are definitely on my to sample list, as they all seem to be well thought of and respected, while being available for a reasonable price💜
I prefer to wear it in warmer days. It shines on those days, on me, a least. I smell artemisia and pine needles. Great smell. Very soft in terms of performance, as you said. It kinda reminds me of vintage Jules by Dior but less leathery. Very good!
exactly my thoughts! i still have a sample from back in 2012, and it smells exactly as you've described it. mossy, green, lots of artemisia, mediocre longevity and projection projection, minimal animalic undertones. They must've reformulated this before 2010, 'cause it absolutely does not match the beast frag that I was expecting. Great review!
I bought this because of your review and it’s a heavy like to a love. If I had a vintage I think it would be a love, the recent formulations are still good but I think an original would be a beast.
My kids got me ELdO Eloge du Traitre as a Christmas gift, and it was a big love for me. Seeing all the comparisons between it and Yatagan, I figured I'd have to try it. Just got a bottle today, I'm sure it's not to everyone's taste, and get how it's not your favorite. Though knowing. you love 1740, it's a mild surprise. For me though, this is just a perfect easy wear cozy wear. I love the earthy, herbal non-pretentious nature of the juice. It does seem to be in ok shape, but haven't smelled vintage in ages, to reference against. Comparisons to the ELdO are spot on, very similar, with ELdO feeling more niche and complex, but also even softer.
Amazing fragrance. The initial celery/pine note epitomizes freshness in cold weather. Then it dries down and just smells amazing. It’s masculine, bold, but timeless and doesn’t smell “dated”. I get no animalic vibes from it.
Yatagan is my favorite from Caron. I don't get a monster projection or longevity from it, but I like it for what it is. On my skin it's not very piny, though I like piny fragrances in general. It's a perfect balance between woody, herbal and animalic(castoreum) for me. Roger et Gallet L'Homme is quite similar to Yatagan to my nose only a little bit sweeter, that's why I prefer Yatagan of these two. Nice review. It's good that someone talks about Yatagan. Because today only niche houses would release fragrance like this and back in the day perfumes like this was usual thing for designers. General taste has changed.
Your Caron lineup is just fine, Pep! ...and this one is as green as it gets, so that makes it a heavy-hitter by yesteryear's standards but not in the current reformulation. Nevertheless, any recent Yatagan flacon, could easily match up against some of today's niche releases. Thanks for uploading another great review.
I've often wondered about this one but have never seen it reviewed, so thanks for that! I can only imagine what the performance was like in the 70s. I'm not sure how I missed your 3me Homme review, but let me check it out now.
I haven't tried the new formulation but I definitely pick up the animalic note in the one I have (bought in the early 2000s). It's also quite strong. I love it but I always wonder whether people think I smell like I just dressed a deer in the woods when I wear it.
By far the best review I've heard...Gifted a bottle recently (I actually mentioned Yatagan by name when I was asked what I'd like) and based on the reviews, couldn't wait to try it. At this point in time, I am beyond disappointed with most fragrances as they have been reformulated beyond recognition from their original state. I am a product of the 1970s - 1990's and was always a fan of the powerhouses that were offered during this period...everything lasted and performed well, it was simply a matter of enjoying the particular scent. Yatagan proved to be everything you mentioned and nothing special. Was expecting something in the neighborhood of a Fahrenheit (not fragrance, but rather performance) and was greatly disappointed. While a fairly pleasant fragrance, I'm hard pressed to determine where and when to wear this EDT...strange. Someone reviewed this fragrance on a popular fragrance site and compared it to vegetable soup with a heavy dose of celery salt. Can't get that out of my mind and sadly, that's sort of what it smells like...I highly recommend anyone seriously considering a purchase of Yatagan, that they try it before buying...Not the powerhouse many claim it to be.

I tried this perfume in earnest but couldn't tolerate it. It has some weird notes that I can't make out but one reminds of V-8 juice or V-8 juice past it's shelf life. :-)
You aren't the first to mention that. People smell a celery note which i never pick up. But that may be just because i've never had V8 juice so totally different associations i guess.
@@TheScentinelInteresting. That must be what I'm smelling because V-8 has celery in it and its a pungent, not great smell. Why Caron went along with that idea is beyond me. Anyway, thought I'd give it a shot. As always, keep up the great videos.
@@daltshuler David, you are absolutely correct...celery salt, and lots of it! I don't get the pine note at all. Sadly someone suggested that Yatagan smells akin to vegetable soup and I can't get that out of my mind! LOL But the V8 vibe is certainly there!
I own this. And I really enjoy wearing it. However, I was disappointed initially that it was not what the reviews said it would be. I expected a strong animalic fragrance. I never got that at all. Rather, I got a nice Woodsy Autumn Fragrance.
The original version, when I had it, smelled like hashish, or hashish oil. In fact, my friend who gave it to me, was frequently stopped by police for suspicion of using hash. He had to carry the bottle with him to prove to the police it was a fragrance. He gave me the bottle and I enjoyed it. However, years later, I bought a bottle and it was not that good. This was in the 1990's I believe, and it didn't have the hashish smell. When I say hashish, I do not refer to burning hashish.
I stocked up on the classics this month, Yatagan and Pour un Homme as well. Pour un Homme smells good, but doesn't last on my skin. Do you have an older bottle?
@@TheScentinel The bottle you have was the most current version until very recently, within the past month or so I think. My bottle looks exactly like yours. However I was on Caron's website earlier today and noticed that the image of the bottle has slight differences to mine, as does the order of ingredients. Also, what they once described as a woods, patchouli and musk scent they now refer to as cypress and incense. The bottle you have only came in 125 ml but this newest one also comes in a 75 ml. It is possible Tina Manske has the newest version. I have not smelled this newest version but I wouldn't be surprised if the formula was a bit different than what you reviewed. All that said, amazing fragrance, and great review!
I don't know if i can answer that. What smells masculine for one person might be different to another. It feels like the current version is more pine and less animLic than vintage
